  • This program's pretty awesome...you can use it to solo/mute tracks from OPL-2 songs, like the music in MegaRace. I had to convert the DRO files I captured from DOSBox and then convert them to IMF files (I also had to change the header, IIRC), and then play them in here.
Unfortunately, the files don't play perfectly as there's some slow down in the tempo but I'm more for extracting the synth patches, which are some of the best I ever heard in FM chiptunes, IMO.
I didn't mute any of the channels in this video, but I'll be using this program to make remixes of the songs from the game by using the muting the channels and multitracking them in FL Studio.

I think the OPL emulation may be off on this one, because on a real OPL it sounds a bit different.

Yeah, this is a pretty old recording, back when DOSBox's OPL emulation wasn't the best.

@@SynaMax Gotcha, just saw the date on it. Have you heard the OPN2 version of the soundtrack for this game on Sega CD? He used the YM2612 in ways to capture the soundtrack, while using the 4-op capabilities of it vs the OPL2's 2-op capabilities, giving it an even grittier feel while adding some new twists to the songs.

Yes, I have. I would love to talk to Éric Safar and find out if it was him that converted the original HERAD OPL2 data to OPN2. I spoke with Stephane Picq, the composer a few years ago. He's pretty reclusive and didn't go into great detail with answering my questions.

@@SynaMax I'm not so sure if it was him. One song was replaced entirely (Maeva) and it almost sounds like an earlier version than the DOS version (as if it is what the DOS version evolved from), and I believe Terminal City gained an extra part with a short slap bass solo. It all feels kind of like something Stephane would have done, perhaps just making modifications to his own creations.

That's right, the Mavea music for DOS is exclusive to that port. The 3DO has the same music for Mavea as the Sega CD (albeit as an audio file rather than MIDI data). I hope that the music on the Sega CD port can be reverse engineered as I would love to do an OPL2 cover of that track.
