Hello everybody! For those who not knows, before doing the Megarace OST, I did also the OST for DUNE by Cryo...😉 30 years after I am just releasing the 2024 remastered digital album studio version of the OST "DUNE SPICE OPERA" in Hi-res Audio 96/24! It features also the full original PC OST dual soundcard rendered (Adlib-Gold plus MT 32) tracks as a Bonus!
I am also planning to release soon a remastering of Megarace OST in the same way, both studio and soundcard version! Check my channel for more news and beta demos...
Holy cow, never expected to see the original composer for this soundtrack of my childhood commenting here on UA-cam, and even more that you're still active and planning a remastering of the Megarace soundtrack. Just wanted to say that this music sparks an intense nostalgia that I keep coming back to and finding new ways to appreciate even after 30 years. Truly amazing what kind of sound you were able to create with the tools back then!
@@jwchew1 Thank you! And I am also planning not only to remaster Megarace or KGB, but to replay them, with the nowadays tools! Just keep updated on my channel!
A remaster of the Megarace OST from the original composer? Hell yes. Megarace is one of the earliest games that I can remember playing as a kid, and the songs are permanently burned into my brain.
It's a great pleasure to hear from you! 😀Super congrats on the work of the Megarace OST, it is fabulous! There's something i always wanted to know... did you use "EdLib" to create the Adlib sounds ???
Sir! Thank you for the mention of the re-release of the Dune music. I compiled a list of "Best of Adlib/SB" last year (ua-cam.com/video/5jMWnfdqRKc/v-deo.html) and you will notice in the track list that one "Stéphane Picq" features more often than other composer! ;) Thank you for your great work. Your Adlib compositions truly are in a league of their own.
Thanks a lot for this upload! Did you know that studio version existed prior to this? Due to the success of It on UA-cam, I wanted to do a remaster, like I did for "Dune Spice Opera" this year (easy to find), but unfortunately the tapes are lost. 😢
But I still have the midi sources, so, be prepared to hear some new version this year!
Just follow me here to keep up-to-date!

Wow, an OPL DOS soundtrack that doesn’t sound sound crappy, and has nice FM instruments and FM drums!😄🤩😎👌
FM is quite complex to program. Hence why a lot of music also does not sound good on the Genesis
@@the-synth-artist Yeah, but the Genesis, Neo Geo, various arcade games using the OPM, the Sharp X68000, FM Towns, and the PC-88/98 all have way better FM music since their FM sound chips us 4 operators on each channel instead of 2 operators on each channel like the OPL family line, allowing for better sounding FM instruments!😄
@@ashkirby8896 Some programmers on Sega Genesis did such a poor programming job with GEMS, they make it sound like 2op. Check out Krusty's Funhouse OST for the genesis. It sounds like an OPL game XD
@@the-synth-artist Yeah, sure, most GEMS soundtracks are shit due to GEMS being MIDI oriented, but SMPS(which is what most Japanese Genesis composers used and eixiated long before GEMS did) Genesis soundtracks sound way much better in comparison due to SMPS being MML oriented rather than crappy MIDI oriented!😄
GEMS had a few good soundtracks like Sonic Spinball (unpopular opinion, but the option music is a banger) and Vectorman.
Holy Cows! I never thought Adlib is capable to produce such sick FM pads and percs!
The adlib is actually a rather underutilized piece of hardware
Probably the best use of the adlib sound card.
*starts the KGB soundtrack*
@@noobtracker By the same guy though!
@@Mnnvint yep, that guy is awesome
THANK YOU ALMIGHTY GOD
Once again, you're welcome for the WAV files 👌🏽
The visualization of NewSan looks better here because some of the details can be seen a bit more clearly than OVGen. Also, a little fun fact about the Herbulot AdLib System (HERAD), the music format Cryo Interactive used for their DOS games with the AdLib/SoundBlaster cards: it apparently allowed Stéphane Picq to have more expressive control over the YM3812 compared to other programs, and it even let him use "hidden parameters" that AdLib didn't document but was mentioned in Yamaha's service manual, thus the result you hear may be because of those "hidden parameters."
@@zxbryc who knows what those "hidden parameters" are. They probably allowed Stéphane to simulate speech synth in the song Gorbi from the game KGB/Conspiracy.
I did the majority of the reverse engineering on HERAD a few years ago and the "hidden parameters" are just macros that are controlled by MIDI events which change various OPL2 registers such as modulator volume, pitch slides, etc. MegaRace's version of HERAD also utilizes a drum key map much like Channel 10 on General MIDI so you can trigger one-hit drum instruments, which makes drum sequencing much easier. I posted all my findings on VGMPF's wiki. www.vgmpf.com/Wiki/index.php?title=HERAD
@@SynaMax that makes a lot of sense. Thanks for posting your findings.
Hidden parameters or not, Picq is a chip wizard !
best part of the whole OST : 13:03
Qu'est-ce qu'une bonne musique ?
Une musique que 20 ans après tu ne te lasses pas d'écouter.
Some of the best ADlib I have heard.. kudos for the SQ on this one, SuperJet Spade .. thanks for uplading
The FM perc and "special effects" on here are otherworldly. You would absolutely not believe these noises are coming from the same hardware that made the average passable General MIDI slop PC game soundtracks of the same era.
this musiic is godly
I remember playing this game on a 386DX 40 mhz with 4 mb of ram and a 2X cd rom unit. Said pc also had a Sound Blaster Pro. The music was awesome, but all the time I thought it was thanks to the Sound Blaster Pro and had no clue the music was actually "adlib" generated.
Prior to that, I remember that some games in adlib actually sounded WORSE than pc speaker! (for instance, Star control. Pc speaker had awesome sounds, but adlib sounds were just crap) For alot of time I just assumed Adlib sound cards were that bad, until the videos about Megarace sound.
Stephanie Picq's other soundtracks are also great. Unfortunately, some composers don't bother learning their instrument, though given how notoriously difficult FM is to work with, it's understandable to a degree.
absolutely beautiful :)
Very talented
good music
Yes
Maeva music in the PC version and the Sega Mega CD version is completely different from each other for some reason.
imo MegaRace is more like a playable Demoscene/Tech Demo for DOS with the Ad-Lib
yeah....the gameplay is FMV
i litterally just saw the old video and the guy requesting this a bit ago
Since you're doing OPL2/OPL3 stuff, could I please ask for some of the music from Descent? Levels 2, 1, 14, 12 and main theme. Maybe mixed with some other requests, I don't want to overwhelm you. The whole soundtrack is excellent, but I don't want to ask for too much.
I don’t know if I’ll be able to do that one. The soundtrack is midi, played though the AdLib/Soundblaster. I’ll need to figure out dosbox and other midi programs, and that’s honestly a bit too much work for me currently. Sorry about that.
The first track is the music when you obliterate a stolen comment.
No, it's NewSan.
Oddly specific scenario for this music
@@64_three I know, right? I can be random sometimes.
28:43 what in the heck, I know the adlib can be quite great at creating awesome sounds but what in the name of the overseeing person above us kind of settings make those waves on channel [column1 row2].
My guess is some waveform overlay techniques (2 or more waveform options selected on one Chanel) like on the sid but I might be wrong
I think that is likely done by giving it slightly too much feedback
This is nothing like most crappy generic AdLib soundtracks. This kicks ass!
Mmmmph... Factory Land tho. 👌😁
Есть ли эти файлы для Adlib Tracker'a 2 ?
can i request grapefruit techniques
no

Good, but too gritty D:
Hey 90s, it’s 30 later and you know what? It sux! I mean the covid pandemy don’t bother as much as crappy music which makes decent living impossible.
at least we have the internet so we can easily listen to 90s computer generated music.
Sonic the hedgehog called, he wants his zone music back 🤣
The megadrive/genesis used (mostly) FM synthesis for its music. So did the AdLib PC sound card which this is written for. That is why it sounds similar to you, it uses the same basic palette of sound.
Further back, this type of chip is also what Brian Eno used since 1983 or so, with the Yamaha DX7. It was used a ton in 80s pop music, but Eno was one of the few who knew how to program it and didn't just use the stock sounds.
NOOO a Sonic fan base creature D:
