No, no, no. I'm writing this on January 19, 2024 and my beautiful Shelley is turning 80 today. How is that even possible? As a teenage boy watching her on the Donna Reed Show, I distinctly remember the first time I saw this on my B&W television. I was 15 and she was 18 and gorgeous beyond compare. Shelley represented everything that was/is good about being 15.
And when this episode aired, Donna Reed and Carl Betz were in the early 40s. It's had to believe that Donna was only 64 when she passed away in 1986 and that Carl lived only to reach 56 before dying in 1978. We hope Shelly is doing well because she will always remember her as a beautiful angel.
Shelley Fabares was born on January 19, 1944 and celebrated her 79th birthday yesterday, January 19, 2023. She was on "The Donna Reed Show" (1958-1963) and the sitcom "Coach" (1989-1997) which earned her two Primetime Emmy Awards nominations. Her recording of "Johnny Angel" reached number one (#1) on the Billboard Hot 100 chart on April of 1962. It was a certified Gold Record, selling over a million copies. I was in eight grade at Miami Springs Junior High School when this song was popular
I just turned 69 this week and Shelley will turn 80 in two days. I too have fond memories of this song and of the Donna Reed Show. Man we're getting old.
The scene calls for "Mary's" mother (Donna Reed) to be somewhat shocked and surprised that her daughter can sing. Also, it's the mother's self-realization in that moment that her daughter is growing up to be not a child anymore but a young lady. You can see her facial expression later turn from surprise to joy at being proud of her lovely daughter.
The guy standing next to Reed is James Stacey, he had run-ins with the law many many times, and was in a serious motorcycle accident, he loss his arm/leg
Not true. The guy in the photo is Carl Betz who played the father on the Donna Reed Show. I actually saw this scene with her mom and dad (in the show) watching her sing "Johnny Angel."
@sloopynumber1...Google it. "Johnny Angel-UA-cam". It was James Stacy - not Carl Betz. The video was aired 02/19/62, Season 4/Epsode 20. The video featured Shelly Fabares, Donna Reed & James Stacy.

@@rhs2931 It's the same look my wife sometimes gets when she's watching our daughters, a mix of concern and pride.

No. Carl Betz played the dad on the Donna Reed show. Look it up.
@sloopynumber1...You're both right. Carl Betz DID play the dad on the show. But the guy standing next to Donna Reed is James Stacey - NOT Carl Betz.

I should have stayed away
Shelley (by her own admission) was not much of a singer. Supposedly it took 18 takes in the studio to get the sound they wanted.
i have a much better quality vid of this. this is too pixilated.
Donna Reed is a bab
@johncomer9179...You mean "babe" right? And yes Donna Reed was a babe "back in the day".
