    Not sure what's going on with tutorials for other high end chainsaws but none of them were working for me. Your video did. Others kept saying turn out the throttle screw to reduce the low idle but it wasn't working. Your info was spot on to turn out the low adjustment. Thank you!

    The chainsaw adjustment was perfect.. great tip w the electrical connector.. Thumbs Down for all the h8ers on here complaining he didn't give a part# for the bog standard blue butt connector, or letting the saw run.
    Excellent first hit on YT, guys not a video editing expert and this is from 6 years ago at that.
    Thanks for the tool tip, however I think I got mine off of ebay for $5. Otherwise, would have picked up a $1-2 assortment of butt connectors and been happy.
    Disregard the 194 whiners, I see almost 300,000 viewers who went away happy most likely.
    Appreciate YOUR time and YOUR effort to pass along tips.

    Hello everybody in cyber world.Some viewers thought my video was a little vague,so I will elaborate a little more on the tune up.In the video you only see me adjust the low screw.That is to get the chain to stop spinning and idling good.To adjust the RPM hold down the throttle and adjust the high screw.If you turn down too low saw will bogg and stall.If you turn too high will not sound right either.So you have to listen for that high rpm and the right sound.You will know when you hear it.Hope this helps

    My new PR4218 started and ran great right out of the box. 10 tanks and two weeks later it became hard but not impossible to start. The check valve in the primer bulb crapped out. I took the one off my 13yr old 4018 which still works fine. After that it went back to starting with one or two pulls. I pulled one of the muffler bolt tubes out to open up it up (easy to reinstall if needed for warranty) and installed an E3 spark plug. It's now on tank 21 and it's a screamer! These Poulans really love the E3 plugs. They idle better and have more low end torque. I wonder how many hard starting complaints with these are due to a crappy bulb?

    Thank you for the video ,the manufacturers should put Phillips head screws on the carb adjustments . If a carb is factory set in USA there is no guarantee it will work properly on the other side of the world. I have a McCullough cs360 which is virtually the same as a Poulan and I cut slots in the screws to adjust the hi and lo from day one . I richened it up because I live in hot dry conditions and run a 25 to 1 fuel oil mix ,your saw will give you many years of good service if you do this ,IMHO these saws are good value.

      After studying forums on these lower priced chainsaws and seeing some of the problems ,I believe most are an oil mix or carb mixture problem ,these strato charged engines seem to run lean generally ,the oil fuel mix recommendations of 40 to one or 50 to one is only to get around euro 4 regulations and this cooks the engines .I had a ryobi weedwhacker that ran for thirty years on 25 to 1 fuel and didn't carbon up .I hope this helps some people ? Kind regards.

  • @thetramp1636
    @thetramp1636 9 років тому

    Just wondering why you would use low-speed mixture screw to adjust the idle speed instead of the idle-speed screw? The idle-speed screw is there for just that; to adjust the idle speed. It doesn't affect the mixture. To use the low-speed mixture screw to lower your idle speed, will mean that your idle mix is either too rich or too lean, depending on which way you went to slow it down. The low-speed mixture screw should be set for fastest/best running at idle. There is a range where you won't notice any difference. Then set the idle speed (so the chain isn't moving) with the idle-speed adjustment screw. Then you can tweak the mixture screws to get rid of any hesitation coming off of idle. (Probably more toward rich, on the low-speed mixture screw, if you initially set it in the middle of it's range.)

    • @scotianinmotion1
      @scotianinmotion1  8 років тому +1

      Sorry for the late response.The reason why I use this method is because my idol does not stop my chain totally when I adjust it.I also have a stihl and your method works fine.Just this Poulin is a different animal,so I have to play with that low screw to stop the chain.

    • @thetramp1636
      @thetramp1636 8 років тому

      +scotianinmotion1 I have a Poulan 4218 AVX and the idle screw works just fine. It sounds like yours has a problem with the throttle butterfly binding a bit. For some reason, it's not closing properly when you have your finger off the throttle. If it was mine, I would try to find out why, and then fix it, rather than compromise the mixture.

    • @deandeitemyer2127
      @deandeitemyer2127 2 роки тому

      Im with you Tramp. Idle is always set with the idle stop screw. It is tru that the mixture is a factor in where that setting ends up being . Low mixture is for idle to midrange performance. It does take some fine tuning of all 3 adjustments since they will all affect each other.

    I need to adjust my carb, which is why I watched this. But a small review on my pp4218. I've had the saw about 2 months. I've cut about 3 cords with it and have about 3 more to do. The ONLY real issue I have is that it gets vapor locked and won't restart for about 15 minutes. I'm no nonsense when cutting and 15 minutes every time I shut er down to fill up and sharpen the chain is upsetting, especially when I go through 3-4 tanks of fuel on the average day. Now, I was going to return it and go to my husky dealer, but I'm not. It's a hell of a little saw. Other than vapor locking, I prime, choke, pull, half choke, pull, pull and it starts, every time. It was $184, go to stihl or husky and for the same cc you're paying 3 times as much, and look at their reviews, not perfect either. I think I do over work the saw and could probably go for a pro saw so I don't hold it against the saw. 5 stars. And thanks for the carb help.

    • @scotianinmotion1
      @scotianinmotion1  9 років тому

      scott dennison You may need to rebuild the carb even though its not that old.Only thing I can think of is watch the chain oiler they do tend to get clogged with saw chips and can make it run hot.Sometimes the gas tank can swell or make gas too hot or vent hole can get clogged causing that vapor lock.Try better gas.You are a beast with a chainsaw.Keep cutting and good luck

    • @scottdennison5727
      @scottdennison5727 9 років тому

      scotianinmotion1 Thanks for the response. I think a rebuild is above my level but I could give it a shit. I'll keep a better eye on the oiler, though I thoroughly clean and degrease the saw (except the chain) after every use. I'll check out the vent hole and use premium fuel too. Another update, I cut the baffles out of the muffler, retuned it and got rid of the safety chain and it performs much better. Thanks again.

      scott dennison hey bud, I had 3 saws that would run very similar and cut off, but it was not actually vapor lock, our problem all three saws ......that little filter inside the gas tank, so never pass up that possibility, you can wring them in a rag blow through them, and they will work for awhile, napa has them new fairly cheap

    I really wanted to hear your tips on how to adjust the Poulan carb, but with the engine running I could barely hear your voice. On my saw, getting the engine to rev up is very difficult. If I quickly squeeze the throttle, it will quit. If I VERY SLOWLY squeeze the throttle, I can get it to rev. Numerous attempts to adjust carb has not fixed the issue. Your thoughts? Thanks.

    • @scotianinmotion1
      @scotianinmotion1  10 років тому +1

      Sorry for the late response.The easiest way to do this is to start from scratch.So turn both screws in all the way clockwise,until they stop but do not screw in too tight.Now screw both screws out 1&1/4 to 1&1/2 turns.Then try and start the saw,if it is boggy hold the throttle down all the way and turn the H or high screw out until your rpms pick up this will give it more fuel.If you turn to much saw will bogg again,just turn back a little.This should fix the bogg.Then turn your L or low screw out until the chain stops spinning this should fix the idle.Hope this helps.

    say there, BOTH of my poulan saws are having issues with the self oilers, now I took them off in the field and inspected, however I didn't remove the hoses just tried to blow them out and clear them, no luck, they are tearing up my bars and chains, can I just hook the compressor up , pull the clear plastic fitting out of the oiler supply and give it a shot of air right through that tube? we just got back to the shop, and trying to get some insight before I tear them apart since I use them almost daily this time of year, I have to admit, the 16 inch 36 cc BLOWS MY 42 clean out of the woods, seriously that smaller saw just tears it up for me, as long as I'm manually slapping oil on the bar that is, I cut about 30 cords, that is 60 pickup loads, of wood last year. • @scotianinmotion1

      You will need to start from scratch to adjust. First turn both screws in clockwise until they stop. Don't turn too tight. Then turn both screws out counter clockwise about 1&1/4 turns. This should at least get the saw started Then start playing with the (Low) screw turning in small increments to adjust the idle. Then play with the( High) screw,doing the same thing.Turning in little increments to adjust your rpm. You will need to hold down your throttle to get the rpm just right. If you mess up start over again. I hope this helps--Gooduck L

      @scotianinmotion1  7 років тому

      Sorry about the connector guage. Mine are not marked,so im not sure.But I use the same one on both screws.They do have an aluminum sleeve inside this helps with the grip. To adjust the high screw--screw it in all the way clockwise,not too tight.Just until it stops.Then turn it out maybe 1&1/4 turns,this should at least get you in the right direction. Low speed screw is to make saw run lean if you screw in.and rich if you screw it out.High speed screw will give saw more power and speed.Some people refer to the idle screw as throttle,because you can adjust idle by pushing on the throttle plate when you screw it in.I hope this helps,again sorry about the connector.- Thanks:Scotianinmotion

The $20 tool will last you years while the plastic connectors will stretch and fall off in a few months or they will tear if you do not have to correct size screw driver or they become brittle and just break so why bother spending the $20 over time and being frustrated than spend the money right then and there and never have to worry about it again

    • @scotianinmotion1
      @scotianinmotion1  5 років тому +1

      If you want to tune the carb from scratch. Turn both high and low clockwise until they stop. Don't over tighten. Then turn both out 1 to 1&1/4 turns. That should get the saw started. Then fine tune from there. Turn low screw until chain stops spinning. Then hold down your throttle and adjust the high screw to get that sweet spot I call it for the rpm's. You will know when you here it. If you adjust to much either way it will die or bogg down on you. Hope this helps. I would also check out some other tubers. No such thing as too much info.

      Check all the obvious things first-- fuel filter,fuel lines,sparkplug,muffler screen,air filter.-- If all those things are ok, then you will have to re tune the saw--- to re tune turn both screws in clockwise. Not to tight, just until they are seated. Turn both screws 1 & 1/4 turns each, counter clockwise,this should get the saw started. Lastly if doesn't work may have to clean or rebuild the carb. Try the low screw to get it idling better. Let me know how you make out.
