    Honestly the most helpful VW CV video on UA-cam. Thank you for making my day 20X easier!

    Fantastic video! I'm swapping my CVs for 944s from Burley Motorsports right now, and I would not have gotten through it without this video! For some reason my new axles have no hip for that concave washer. I spoke with some people and I guess on mine it’s not needed. Part 1 of these videos also allowed me to catch a mistake with one of the pre-assembled joints. Would have been a bummer to have found that out miles away from home, so thank you for hours, potentially days, of aggravation averted!

    Great video! Thanks for posting such quality. I've seen now for the first time that you can actually do this job without covering yourself head to toe, and your tools, in grease. True pro you are. I've learned a ton. Thanks again!

    Excellent. I have a car that i purchased that was just a pile of parts. While I was able to find all the cv joint pieces (after a lot of searching), they were completely disassembled. i struggled with how to put them back together, so this was incredibly helpful.

    Van, I just repaired a torn cv on my 1944 S2. My axel did not have the inner concave washer though. Thanks for your excellent explanation on the proper way to rebuild the cv joint.

    I too would like to express how well done and helpful your video is. To say you saved my weekend is the understatement of the year. A brake job/bearing replacement revealed the need to replace the axel in my 06 jetta 2.5. After finding one at autozone and having a new unit overnighted I was dismayed to open the box to see the zip tie holding the end together for shipping had broken and the ball bearings were loose

    Thank you very much for making this video. I recently purchased a new axle for my Audi A4 and the inner CV joint bearing/cage system disassembled while trying to install--essentially paralyzing the project and left me seething with befuddlement. Your video enabled me to reassemble this joint (in 8 minutes, after all the grease was wiped off) and continue with the replacement-- Thank you again, WELL DONE!

    Best two (parts 1 and 2) that I have seen. I'm seeing some oil or whatever around top of CV Joint. Not sure if coming from CV Joint or the tranny. Trying to find out if there is a seal on CV Joint to replace or a seal at axle (tranny) to replace.

    While replacing the clutch on my VW two balls fell out of one of the CV joints! Could NOT figure out how to get them back in even using the manual. Using your video I got them back in with no sweat...thanks! I bent the clip on the end of the axle while getting it off. Couldn't find a replacement at any auto parts place but did find one at Tractor Supply of all places.

  • @Jerkwaad
    @Jerkwaad 11 років тому

    Answer to 00:15: Actually you CAN put it together the wrong way, if you do it horribly wrong like I did.
    The time was yesterday's night and I was under my car trying to fit one CV axle on the new installed motor. In the dark outside, accidentally the CV joint fell apart due to much twist. I let the cage stay on the center part, pressed the balls in it and then sideways twisted the flange on and it was STIFF (no movement). I did it again this morning. Then I watched this video and God bless you!!

    Well, a duh moment. I ordered two used replacement axles. I the process of cleaning and replacing , I mixed up the outers and inners from the axles. That was the problem. Keep yer s___ together, those inners and outers are machined as one( I guess).
    It was curious that the transmission side of the CV do not have a groove. The used ones had two grooved CV's, ah 50 year old stuff...hope it works.

    Hi Van, The video has explained where I was going wrong ...many thanks. Now my big issue is, I live in the UK and I have a Land rover Discovery 3 ...this has a prop shaft with one of these joints at either end, but, yes but, the UK is hell bent on making us buy the complete prop! ...do you have any idea of where I can get one of these kits for my Land rover, and a part No would be great ...the prop shaft is made by Hardy Spicer (GKN), I cant find any kits by them.

    I lost sleep last night. I have reassembled the joint and packed it but was unsure if l did it correctly. After a week of searching l found your video by accident. It answered ALL my questions! I will sleep well tonight!
    Question, when you assemble the joint to the flange do you add grease inside the flange itself?
    Thx Peter

    Van, should cv axles be "rotated" like tires to minimize wear? Taking off one of my 944's axles this morning was sure easier with air than when I did it before with elbow grease.

    • @vsvenson
      @vsvenson  8 років тому

      +jockellis If you rotate it, move it from the left side of the car to the right, and vice versa. Rotating it to just flip the inner and outer joints doesn't change the orientation of contact surfaces.

    Question for you I've got to put together a similar setup on a VW transporter the issue it it fell apart on someone and I cant get it back together right. It locks strait but the cage and bearings move freely inside is it possible that the joint is broken or do you think it's just not together right. It seems to look like it should when together but I did try to do it still on the shaft? My work is going to make the lad that did it pay for a dealership driveshaft if I can't get it fixed.

  • @13634landing

    Just would like to say thank you for the video. In working on our 78 911 SC, I noticed a torn boot. After I removed the axles and disassembled, I noticed quite a bit of wear to the point of two visible divots on the outer most ring on the CV joint. I also noted wear points on the spider gear. At what point or level do you just replace the CVJ vs rotating and reassembly? This is my first attempt at CV joint rebuilding or replacing and your video is very instructional for a NOOB like me.
    If replacement is necessary, what brand of CV joint do you recommend for the 911?
    Thank you again, cheers

    • @vsvenson
      @vsvenson  7 років тому

      It should be the same - be patient and make sure you have everything lined up. Articulate and flex it while the balls go in to make sure everything's working as it should.

  • @timclark4058
    @timclark4058 8 років тому

    • @timclark4058

  • @Wiliuz
    @Wiliuz 8 років тому

    great video!!! quick question, can the outer cv joint be reasembled incorrectly?

    • @vsvenson
      @vsvenson  8 років тому

      The outer and inner joints on these cars are the same - some cars, like front-wheel drive ones - have one side that's different (more like a cup that the "spider" slides in). But, if the directions of the components are correct (inner piece has a bevel to aid sliding onto the splines of the shaft, outer piece has a groove that goes away from the shaft) and it flexes when you've put it back together, you've done it right.
