    As stoats (or weasel as you call them out there) are a very particular favourite species of mine and I really didn't think you could produce anything to beat those two superb images, but.... that first infra-red shot of the giraffe in amongst the foliage absolutely blew me away. I'm not one to gush over many images I see but I think that would have to be one of the most stunning wildlife pictures I have ever seen.

    I love this annual ritual. Amazing photography and interesting insights. As always! Thankyou, Steve!
    I really dig the running Weasel and the Rhino. Your animals in their environment kinda shots are so magnificent.

    When you pointed out the matching stride of the baby and mother elephant it turned a plain image to brilliant.

    Always enjoy your photos, thoughts and perspective. 2020 was a challenge for us all. Reflecting on my own photography I find I struggled just to get the camera out. Keep shooting and sharing.

    Awesome photos Steve. I got to photograph an ermine this winter. I found it interesting, that even though I was close to it for a few minutes. It would never make any eye contact, not even once. In my world, you did have a great year. Congrats on getting engaged. Have a great 2021. Look forward to your this years top picks.👍👍

    Congratulations on the engagement, Steve!
    Makes me happy 😁
    To this day, one of my favorite vids of yours was the "Keep trying in photography and in life"... you were transparent about some not so fun life events and its so awesome that you pushed through with a positive outlook (where many have given up and went into a dark place) and now you are receiving the fruits of that 👍🏻
    Such killer images, as always.
    My favorites are.......all of them 🤣
    The mountain lion, The ermine with prey, and the rhino stand out the most though... and the Elephant with baby, OMG... I might have to purchase a print for my mother... Looking forward to the rest of them! 👍🏻

    Thanks Steve. The mountain lion is a once-in-a-lifetime photo. I share your appreciation of the rhino, and think the elephants are charming. Congrats on the engagement to Stephanie. We brought home some nice photos from our workshop with you in late September. We also enjoyed your podcast interview. I’m looking for part 2...this video was fun. Dave in MN

    Very nice, congrats on the engagement. After this video I watched again the one in your African safari. I wish it was longer or you made a few more videos out there, plenty of beauty captured. I appreciate the priority was for you to shoot rather than blog and I have first hand experience of how tiresome safaris get. As an aside could you explain what you see as the main attraction to infrared photography as i’ve seen over the years various photographers trying it.

    Apparently we were at Ngorogoro Crater on the same day. I have a very similar photo of the same rhino taken on February 22, 2020 at 12:37 am on my camera. Time zone not changed in the camera.

    Glad you’re back Steve. I enjoy your videos and the beautiful setting where you live and work. I couldn’t help but notice, your “go to” camera for most of your special shots last year was the D850, usually coupled with your 600 F4 lens. Does this mean you’ve given up on mirrorless? And how do you feel about the recent firmware improvements?

    • @SteveMattheis

      Nope, I'm 100 percent mirror less now...

    The rhino image that you printed 6 ft wide, where did you get it printed and on what medium (paper / metal / acrylic). Very curious about the fact that you can get a 6 ft wide print from D850, which is fantastic.

    That IR shot was really nice... I just got my X-T10 back from Life Pixel...what Fuji lens have you had success with?

      The 18-135 doesn't hot spot much so it's a good one. 55-200 also. And the f/2 primes...

  • @faerphoto

    Hi Steve. Great video. I really enjoyed all the images shared so far, but the baby elephant and giraffe ones really stand out for me. For the IR image of the giraffe in the trees, what lens and focal length did you use? It seemed like a wide angle, but it could also have been quite a distance away. I'm hopefully heading to Africa next year and am trying to figure out the lens situation, since I can't bring everything I own, lol. Thanks for sharing - video, photos, stories, thoughts. Cheers from Maine. :) Paula

    • @SteveMattheis
      @SteveMattheis  3 роки тому

      That one was with the Fuji 55-200 but I don't remember the exact focal length

    • @faerphoto
      @faerphoto 3 роки тому

      Ok, thanks. That's enough to know it was still a distance away. I wish I could bring all my lenses and bodies, but I'll have to make some decisions about what to take and what gets left behind. This helps. Thanks. :)

    What nm is your infared converted camera? Looking to get one converted but am unsure as to which to get and your photos are truly amazing. Love the giraffe photo. Thank you for sharing

    • @SteveMattheis
      @SteveMattheis  3 роки тому

      That was 720nm but my next one will be the 850 deep black and white since those are the type of images I seem to prefer.

    I went to Jackson twice last year to visit my parents house. First time was in April, second was in August. More people than I'd ever seen there. Two moose were killed by motorist that week, one happened in front of me early one morning by the airport. Very upsetting.
