    As someone who doesn’t really have a backup strategy, I know , it’s not whether a drive fails, but when🥴, I’m grateful to hear yours and I like it. Thanks for all your videos. I like them a lot

    I appreciate videos like this which breakdown how someone backs up their photos because it's different yet similar for most folks. It's a great way to learn what different people do. My process is almost identical except for the part about carrying with you which I will now do because that makes sense. I may even grab a few of those crucial X6's because the form factor absolutely allows for an easy carry being so THIN.
    The other aspect of photo editing I enjoy is finding out how folks STORE their photos - both within their libraries (ie. I use alot of smart albums with keywords) plus the physical storage with NAS or backup systems.
    Can't wait to see the images from Africa! Good luck!

      Yes there are so many ways to do things. As long as you have a system that works for you, and that you actually use that system, you should be good 👍

    Good video Steve. Very useful information including the belkin usb splitter. Look forward to seeing your Africa images. Would you consider a video on your process to deal with large volumes of photos from a trip? Some of us with 15k of images have some heavy lifting ahead. Best. S

    Looks like a good and safe way to do it!
    Was there in 92, had for 8 weeks around 35 rolls of film with me....
    And happily nothing happend and i got them all home....
    2 years later in US, somebody stole my photobag while checking in luggage at the airport on the way back...
    Would have been great to have backups, but with film....
    Wish you a good trip and nice shots / videos!

    Good info thanks Steve,
    I’m going to try the crucial 4.tb now.
    I also run a new MacBook for all my photography work now & have retired the iMac, may I ask what storage system you’re using at home ? I have an older G-technology 10tb on the desk at home but it’s lagging. Thanks in advance cheers

    I am also done with Sandisk, which is made by WD (western digital) g-line is also made by WD... and after I had a Sandisk extreme pro 2tb ssd fail on me a few months ago. I was told by their customer service, all 3 branded drives use their same drive inside as the Sandisk ones... I also found out theres a major lawsuit due to the widespread failures and that instead of WD pulling them off the shelf, they just put a discount price on them and kept selling them. They claim to have fixed the issue, but widespread failures are still being reported with the new ones.
    They only thing they offer after failure, is an attempt to send in for data recovery and a replacement of the same crappy failure prone drive.
    I will NOT buy any of their products again.
    Crucial or samsung it is for me

    The SanDisk SSD drives had a problem on Mac computers with their firmware. There is now an update that, apparently, fixes the problem.
    I recently did a two week trip in Nunavut photographing polar bears and the Crucial 4TB drive that was part of my kit stopped working after a week. It was a brand new drive. Re-formatting it fixed the problem. The point here is that you gotta test everything thoroughly before you go, doing multiple backups to make sure all is working.
    As shown on the vid, 2 backups should be the minimum. I backup so that I have 4 of everything and never travel with them all together.

    Did you need an adapter to plug into the socket, or does the American one work in Africa?

    Thanks! Do you re use your cards or do you keep them as a 3rd copy of the files?

    • @SteveMattheis
      @SteveMattheis  4 місяці тому +1

      Once the files are backed up onto the ssd's, the cfexpress cards go back into the cameras and get formatted.

    Do you load to these ssd directly or do you cull some of the images before transferring them? My High speed photography creates too many images to just copy without culling.

    • @SteveMattheis
      @SteveMattheis  4 місяці тому

      I import all photos into Lightroom, which copies them onto the ssd. I cull them later using Lightroom.
