What other singer can inhabit every song and make it their own the way Michael Stipe can? Maybe only Nina Simone? The guy could sing the phone book and bring you to tears.
Blimey. I feel like I've just put my finger in the socket. All hail the gods of the algorithms for bringing me here. Not a massive Springsteen fan but he and the divine Mr Stipe complement each other perfectly. Please Michael, take me now baby, here as I am ....
When I was a freshman at UGA I got invited to a special event at a local dive in Athens. Imagine my surprise when the entertainment turned out to be REM. They never forgot their roots!
I am a huge fan of both Springsteen & REM, but Michael Stipe has to be one of the most unlikely rock gods ever. Stipe is so different, but it's his peculiarities that make him so good.
I agree. He totally turns on its head what we think of as a rock front man. You can't take your eyes off him but it's not like a classic sex appeal or power singer. He comes to the audience, pulls you in. He's a true original.
As someone who grew up in the 80s and 90s, I didn’t realize how lucky we were in terms of music and vocals. REM, Pearl Jam, Nirvana, U2, Counting Crows, The Cure, INXS, Smashing Pumpkins, etc. All of those acts weren’t just popular, their sounds *and* vocals were creative/unique/groundbreaking. No autotune. No backing tracks. No cheating. They somehow managed to pull off sounding so fresh and different… Without all of their songs sounding the same. It’s such an incredibly difficult thing to pull off.
WOW!!! If you ever want to show somebody the power of rock music, this is exhibit A. Two outstanding performers, an incredible band, and a rock song for the ages. A million thanks for posting this.
Every cover song michael stipe sings i can never fault! His voice is out of this world. What ever he sings and who ever with he brings a touch of magic to the music A music genius!
Eddie Vedder and Stipe do a great duet of Man on the moon and Eddie Vedder can sing anything with anyone and sound great. He also dances along with the band. As you may realize that I have a huge crush on Eddie Vedder. I think Stipe and Vedder duet is better than this one. Check It out. The song is based on a very strange and unusual comedian Andy Kaufman who nobody really knew when he was joking or not. I saw him out of character and he sang an Elvis song and I was amazed at the beautiful voice and Elvis moves he performed. Then, out of the blue he started wrestling for real. Unusual comedian Andy Kaufman who was honored by Michael Stipe and the song Man on the Moon.
Love the energy and grace michael stype brings to this song. You can see and feel the respect and admiration they both have towards each other. One of my favorites!!!
Really appropriate collaboration. The day Stipe and Peter Buck met at the record store the latter worked at, they spent 2 hours talking about Patti Smith's first 4 albums. Michael is a HUGE Patti fan.
As much as dig The Boss, I always felt this one " belonged" to Patti Smith. In the same way the Pointer Sisters did "Fire". Not that Bruce ever did a bad version, but sometimes things seem to fit.
Michael Stipe's voice has always made my hair stand on end in the best way. He's electrified me for as long as I've been listening to music. I'll always be sad I never got to see R.E.M. perform live. And yes, Michael, I'll take you now.
I just went "DEEP IN THE VAULT" last weekend n found 2 shows starring: Bruce Springsteen and The E Street Band and R.E.M Live in Washington D.C. and Cleveland 2004. Two Excellent Audio Soundboard Shows!
Bruce wrote the music and the title, but this song has been brought to life by so many other people, but the man is an amazing song writer. A living legend.
Patti did not rework the lyrics. The only thing retained from Bruce is "Because the night belongs to lovers". All of the rest of the lyrics were written by Patti about her husband Frederick.
Listen to Stipe and Eddie Vedder duet of Man on the Moon based on the unusual comedian Andy Kaufman of the 70's. He also did an incredible impersonation of Elvis and I didn't even know that he sang. Stipe while standing next to Eddie Vedder does a few Elvis moves and Eddie Vedder gives a great smile. Andy Kaufman was one of the most unique people I have ever seen and maybe Stipe wrote this song to honor him.
I’ve been a fan of both Springsteen and REM for a long time, and somehow I’ve never seen this before. Quite possibly the best version of Because The Night I’ve ever seen!
Because the nigh chanté par MIKE est simplement incroyable et magnifique.Mike tu es un génie je t'adore.la performance de Bruce est aussi sublime bravo à tous les deux 🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰
Mike was in awe of the artist, his validity, his truth. Read The Boss’s Autobiography about how he feels about writing this song. When REM worked their way out of that sleepy college backwaters radio airwaves, honing their craft, pouring blood, guts and spirits into the truth of their music, it was because the music had abandoned them. There were no more legitimate Rock n Rollers, writing their own music, starting out cutting their teeth in local bars, and college gigs...except for one. And the Boss built his template for his band, and he built it strong, and true. And so what you see here in this one video is the crossover of common paths. Bruce did more than anyone from his/my generation in this country to save Rock n Roll. Mike, Pete, Barry & (the other cat whose name I don’t remember) did what was necessary to throw the curtains open on the windows long sealed letting the light blazing off the E Street Bands music shine inside the homes of kids around the world. And they honored the work of the Boss. And at this concert in ‘90, REM had just completed 2 world tours, having released their 10th album, the previous 6 all going Platinum (without the Internet), finally catching up with their mentor. Hell yeah, Stipe was in awe. He was a kid in playground and the grownups were all gone and he played Bruce as loudly as he could. And Bruce reflected the passion Mike brought to his song, and played it like his heart was bleeding from his guitar strings. Yeah, thank goodness for YTube. That’s the T.
Bruce wrote Because the Night, music & lyrics, for his magnificent 1978 album, "Darkness on the Edge of Town." (What does that say about the quality of the Darkness album when a song this great doesn't make the cut?) Patti Smith was recording her album, "Easter," at the same time in the same studio (The Record Plant, in NY City). They were fans & friends, and when Because the Night didn't make the cut for Darkness, he offered it to her. She asked if she could change some of the lyrics.. Bruce not only agreed, but at a time when she desperately needed the money, he very graciously also gave her full co-authorship. He never did release a studio version of the song although he played it live during the tour that followed the release of Darkness in June, 1978, and occasionally, in the forty years since. Many versions can be heard and seen on UA-cam. (Because the Night has been covered by too many individuals and groups to mention, probably most notably 10,000 Maniacs & Natalie Merchant.) This is an audio performance of the song on December 15, 1978, at Winterland Auditorium in San Francisco,. It's a favorite because my wife and I were among the standing-room crowd of about 5,000. I wish there was a video of the show because it's hard to explain how great Bruce Springsteen was on the 1978 Darkness tour - IMO he's still the best performer since the invention of amplification. But in 1978 he was just *electric*. I left Winterland thinking, *knowing*, that I had just experienced the greatest rock & roll that had ever been or ever would be. Ah,... Turn It Up. ua-cam.com/video/MuIzWgWN2d0/v-deo.html
What a perfectly odd couple! Bruce's musical "dance" moves are manly and muscular.....very cool!!!!!!!!! Michael movements are spastic and beautiful!!!! Watching Bruce, you see pasion of the writer and musican. At 1:53 in the video Michael EXPLODES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It is the epitome of what every school dance, prom, dance club, weddingand concert should be. If you don't love this rendition, you should please open your mind and soul and watch again.
@@dancingowlheadman It was technically nothing special but was an absolutely cathartic, emotional powerhouse of a solo. It depends on what you want from a guitar solo. I'm not much into the cold, technical precision of many metal shredders. It doesn't move me. It moves the hell out of a ton of fans though. And Bruce goes for a mood, soulfulness and catharsis. It doesn't connect with you but It sure does with an equally large amount of fans.
What other singer can inhabit every song and make it their own the way Michael Stipe can? Maybe only Nina Simone? The guy could sing the phone book and bring you to tears.
I forgot how happy this song & video make me
Blimey. I feel like I've just put my finger in the socket. All hail the gods of the algorithms for bringing me here. Not a massive Springsteen fan but he and the divine Mr Stipe complement each other perfectly. Please Michael, take me now baby, here as I am ....
I could watch Michael stipe dance forever.
So could I.
Very sexy.
Absolutely!
This is the reason why I never got tired of UA-cam.
Still am I !!! LOVE !!!
Wow, never thought I would see Michael Stipe and Bruce Springsteen on the same stage! They killed it!
🎤 drop. No words. Be glad you were alive at a time that this kind of magic was made.
I saw this live in Philadelphia. The most epic concert moment in my life so far.
That's so cool. I love getting a surprise duet at a concert. I've been lucky to catch a few myself and it's always a highlight.
I saw the Cleveland show! I feel the same way! Fogerty with ESB was awesome too!
Replaying for the last two hours. Love this so much.
Me too!
When I was a freshman at UGA I got invited to a special event at a local dive in Athens. Imagine my surprise when the entertainment turned out to be REM. They never forgot their roots!
What a fookin moment in time 👏
I am a huge fan of both Springsteen & REM, but Michael Stipe has to be one of the most unlikely rock gods ever. Stipe is so different, but it's his peculiarities that make him so good.
I think that Stipe looks sexy in that white suit.
I agree. He totally turns on its head what we think of as a rock front man. You can't take your eyes off him but it's not like a classic sex appeal or power singer. He comes to the audience, pulls you in. He's a true original.
The great Michael stipe
This is one of the best versions I've heard of this - beautiful!
As someone who grew up in the 80s and 90s, I didn’t realize how lucky we were in terms of music and vocals. 👍🏻 I absolutely positively 100% agree!
I SO miss that era! Such unbridled talent flourished in those two decades. Music just doesn't stand up to any of them these days.
One of Bruce's greatest guitar solos
WOW!!! If you ever want to show somebody the power of rock music, this is exhibit A. Two outstanding performers, an incredible band, and a rock song for the ages. A million thanks for posting this.
In a world full of deceit and, lies. The truth and music. Have both become a revolutionary act.
One of the best videos ever! Michael is purely rock n roll and so is Bruce. This is from the John Kerry concert in Washington DC. Awesome work!
Wow. This version gives me chills. There is no one like M. Stipe.
Brian Molko with placebo
Michael Stipe never disappoints.
Every cover song michael stipe sings i can never fault! His voice is out of this world. What ever he sings and who ever with he brings a touch of magic to the music
A music genius!
They compliment each other PERFECTLY! Bruce jams while Michael sings, and Michael dances from head-to-toe while Bruce sings!
Lol the way stipe dances he's like a little kid just having the time of his life not a care in the world! Pretty refreshing
amazing……
That's what I would do on stage.... dance my ass off.
Eddie Vedder and Stipe do a great duet of Man on the moon and Eddie Vedder can sing anything with anyone and sound great. He also dances along with the band. Michael and Bruce are two of my absolute favorites of all time, but how about that sax solo!
Love the energy and grace michael stype brings to this song. You can see and feel the respect and admiration they both have towards each other. One of my favorites!!!
I always like it when Springsteen cuts loose on guitar as he does here. He doesn't get enough credit for his guitar-playing.
DEAD RIGHT
I couldn't agree more!!
Guitar break sounds sorta like Neil Young on Like a Hurricane.
What a great duo! Would loved to have seen this show!
Really appropriate collaboration. The day Stipe and Peter Buck met at the record store the latter worked at, they spent 2 hours talking about Patti Smith's first 4 albums. Michael is a HUGE Patti fan.
REM was one of the best bands for so long time - incredible!
I'm a Springsteen fanatic and this version of Because the night with Michael Stipe is just awesome.
Fan of Bruce and of REM.. and THIS is powerful rockand roll. The REAL thing.
As much as dig The Boss, I always felt this one " belonged" to Patti Smith. In the same way the Pointer Sisters did "Fire". Not that Bruce ever did a bad version, but sometimes things seem to fit.
Drove out from NJ to Cleveland to support the rock the vote shows...best $ I ever spent...
Damn. I didn't know Bruce had that guitar playing in him! Stevie is even watching him..He Rocks!
Nils even came over to look at Bruce shred!
One of finest versions I've heard of this tune!
Two great male voices...
What we can ask for more... BRUCE and MICHAEL!!! PERFECT🎶🎶😘😘
Michael Stipe's voice has always made my hair stand on end in the best way. He's electrified me for as long as I've been listening to music. I'll always be sad I never got to see R.E.M. perform live.
And yes, Michael, I'll take you now.
Got to see REM in Cincinnati, Ohio a long time ago. We had terrible seats but the music was fantastic. I wish I could remember more. 😢
😘❤
Two powerhouses with powerful pleasing voices
Just incredible
These kind of guest vocals usually don't work that great, imo. This was unbelievably amazing. Has to be the best I've ever seen.
Michael was a big fan of Patti Smith so he was probably very into this song.
Michael is a legends
I was there and it was awesome
Love Bruce Springsteen & Michael Stipe together...awesome
They (Elton and Billy) put on a great Concert..saw them in Tacoma
Michael Stipe definitely gets into it. His little dances he does shows it.
Love duets you would never expect.
I love his dance... He doesn't have to think to dance.. it just comes from within ❤️🔥
Even if I was deaf, I'd still love to watch Stipe dance.
Regina Weir He is so entertaining.
Love Stipes dancing. Reminds of Natalie Merchant. No one will dance like MJ. But I love their dance freak outs. Cool.
Don't get bent out of shape. I love the way he moves. I love him. Not trying to compare him to anyone.
Me too. Even if I was blind.
One word for this: CLASS.
Just brilliant.
Bruce is playing his ass off! A great display of guitar skills!
He always does.
Stipe takes this to the top, level
Gorgeous Michael. Thank you very much. ❤❤
WOW Amazing
I am just seeing this for the first time. How dam lucky were we to see these artists live?
Freakin sweet combination! Michael Stipe is an absolute boss and Springsteen is well... The BOSS!
My favorite song. The greatest song and a wonderful interpretation.
When 2 huge stars combined.. The outcome sounds like this.. Just fantastic..
I just went "DEEP IN THE VAULT" last weekend n found 2 shows starring: Bruce Springsteen and The E Street Band and R.E.M Live in Washington D.C. and Cleveland 2004. Two Excellent Audio Soundboard Shows!
is this the right place for me to profess my love of Michael Stipe???
Yes. Ditto lol
My favorite version! 🖤🔥🤘
Trop beau Mikael en admiration devant le solo de Bruce 👍👍🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸
Just heard this for the first time. Wow.
This is my favorite Patty Smith song. ❤
Bruce wrote the music and the title, but this song has been brought to life by so many other people, but the man is an amazing song writer. A living legend.
Patti Smith finished what Bruce started and made it epic. This version rocks.
+Aaron Davis I thought Patti Smith wrote it?
+Michael Ladd CO-wrote I believe
+Michael Ladd Patti reworked some of the lyrics
Patti did not rework the lyrics. The only thing retained from Bruce is "Because the night belongs to lovers". All of the rest of the lyrics were written by Patti about her husband Frederick.
What an incredible song...an absolute anthem.

Man! They really nailed that.
One of the very best live duos great performances by all. A treat!
