  • I was doing some fish room maintenance and afterwards I realized I needed a little extra filtration I could easily move around. I came up with this simple box filter that anyone can put together. Hope you like it.

    Those are awesome....we are actually setting back up an under gravel filter for an old tank we are fixing up....love them....Jack had one set up for over 2 years that we never touched and it was crystal clear....👍

      @@FishmanEricRussell Absolutely... as I said, that's how we learn, but you got it right most of the time! You have some amazing ideas, it's just a matter of making sure you think ahead, but that doesn't always work either, because you can't always see the results until after it's up and running...time teaches patience and understanding!

    I believe box filters are better than sponge filters because of the customization you can do to get the filtration needed.

    Internal box filters bring back memories of my first 10 gallon tank. I always thought the box filter took up too much room (less room for fish). Quickly switched to undergravel filters. Always appreciate your videos. Looking forward to your no clog air stone. Keep it up. Thanks Fred O

    Sandpaper works well to make the pipe narrower, just put some tape on the bit you get up to...
    Smaller bubbles... smaller drillbit.

    • @FishmanEricRussell
      @FishmanEricRussell  5 років тому

      Sandpaper works great! The smallest drill bit I have (1/16") still gives large bubbles. Thanks for watching

  • @fishrrelaxing9361
    @fishrrelaxing9361 5 років тому

    If you modified this design a little to make it a moving bed filter with sand you would be able to use same size filter and get 10x the biological and still get polishing. The biggest side effect would be you’re going to need a slightly larger air pump. Or possibly have to run two air lines. Something to think about cause I know how you like to tinker and I think a flowing sand filter would be much more pleasing to the eye inside the tank.

    Wow so many things i want to comment on in this one i have to pause it. so are scuds OK in a planted tank? i thought they would eat the plants? would they eat black beard algae? i cant shake this stuff no matter how patient i am and no matter how much i adjust nutrients and light levels and intensities. that high humidity emersed planter is looking amazing i really like it. Also looking forward to seeing your version of a never clog airstone. the box filter is looking good. i love box filters now. super reliable and fairly floodproof. i dont get the purpose behind your external box thing. i like just a box and a lift tube with good media and a piece of fine sponge on top. for maintenance all i do is reach in grab the sponge. rinse it out and put it back. every few months ill clean the media. but you box filters look cool. lol

    • @FishmanEricRussell
      @FishmanEricRussell  5 років тому +1

      Yes scuds are in all of my planted tanks with no issues. That doesn't mean the're aren't plants that may not work with them, but I haven't run across any yet. If I ever get a client with black beard algae I will try them out on it. The box in the box always the filter to draw water from the bottom of the tank and from up in the water column. Hope that helps and thanks for watching

      @@FishmanEricRussell Well i have a tub/pond with lots of scuds and if you say thay are mostly harmless at least in your experience so far. then wll i think im going to risk it and toss some in my 55. BBA is insane and its gotten me close to dropping this hobby a few times. if the scuds make any difference at all ill be happy. and even if they dont just so long as they dont complely destroy any of my plants or moss ill be happy because free fish food. and your box in a box makes more sense now, considering thats where waste will collect. i just prefer my easy maintenance.

    My question is when you drill holes on the top of the box filter how will it suck throught the holes in the bottom???

    • @FishmanEricRussell
      @FishmanEricRussell  5 років тому +1

      Water will flow through the path of least resistance, but some flow will go through even the most distant holes. It really won't suck from the bottom but water will come from there. Thanks for taking the time to check out my channel. Much appreciated

    I've noticed that you use a lot of lava rock for biological filtration. While getting back into the hobby after a roughly 15 year hiatus, I bought into the notion that specialized (and expensive!) biological media is a necessity. After seeing your channel and a few others, I'm now starting to question that notion. In your experience, how does lava rock compare to such products as a means of biological filtration?

    • @FishmanEricRussell
      @FishmanEricRussell  5 років тому

      Lava rock may not be precisely as good, but you would need a lab and high end testing equipment to prove it. In the real world I've found it just as good. Seeing how I can go down to the local garden shop and buy a huge bag for less than the cost of one of the tiny specialty substrates, I'd say the choice is easy. Thanks for taking the time to come by and I hope that helps
