@@DIYwithWayneMr. Wayne. I did two projects. It took me like 30 minutes to do the side door lock. I also bought the kwikset smart-key lock. That was easy too. Then I tackled the front door lock. That took me like an hour? I had to fix some of the holes on the door trim for the strike plate. Whomever put the strike plates originally didn't know what they were doing. But I figured it out. I couldn't believe I did this on my own. My husband was impressed He was like "How did you do this?" I showed him your video. He said "really?" I said... "yes, I channeled Wayne the entire time". 😉🤣
@@DIYwithWayne Awwww. Mr. Wayne I'm so glad I made your day. But you made my life easier. I feel so accomplished. Keep up with the videos. They're very educational and informative. Take care and God bless.
“Right quick…” it was like having my Dad with me to put my mind at ease. Something about seeing that last step that made the directions “click” (avoid the temptation to unscrew the long screws as they are sold/packaged in-place right where they need to be)… Bought the Kwikset model for that DIY rekeying feature & it was a snap, too. Got my condo’s balcony storage room keyed to my front door, one key for both doors. And no locksmith fees!! 🎉 Thanks Wayne (& Izzy). 💪🔑😊
Thank you a thousand times. Paid someone to change my door years ago and the lock was always loose. It finally fell off about two weeks ago. I tried several times to put it on with no avail. Looked a several videos and something was missing. Saw your video about half an hour ago and presto its on. The other videos did not mention the twisting to get the screws to properly align. Thank you once again. God bless you. Peace.
Just replaced my first doorknob! I am 65 years old and my dad (who’s 92) has always been a do-it-yourselfer. Your video was spot on and I followed step by step and am happy to have my new doorknob working with my old key!! My husband was very impressed!! Thank you

Hooray! I can fix the door knob and it'll stay fixed! I have been tightening the little hold screws on the neck of the knob and it's tiresome and temporary. Thanks so much!
Wow! I bought this EXACT Smartkey Kwikset lockset. I ALWAYS read the directions and prep before hand. But I just wasted 30 minutes and embarrassed the heck out of myself in front of the whole family. The directions were nonsensical- ''remove plates'' (NO!), and included a ''drive in collar'' that was pointless (but if used and left in place will cause alignment problems). Meanwhile, the AC is going out and mosquitoes are coming in! I felt like the whole family was watching my defeat. I threw the blasted directions in the trash and watched your video from beginning to end. Then I did the job in about 8-10 minutes (demo. to family and cleanup included). Good heavens! It's a nice, solid lockset, and I get that Kwikset ''made it simple'' by designing it so that the through bolts can be left in place- but without your video, I'd have blown a gasket! Sending you endless thanks and gratitude for saving my pride. Liked and subbed!
I understand your frustration with the directions. I have installed about a dozen of these and the first one I installed was a real pain trying to understand the instructions. Good job and thank you for visiting. We hope you have a great day and enjoy your new lock.

Very good video. The one I installed today did not come out of the package as shown. My screws were in a sealed plastic bag. The style of knob I used seems shorter than the demo one. A locksmith installed the original. I noticed one screw was somewhat angled . The heads were worn. The new screws I hand placed, but one was hard to turn because it is too close to the round knob. I also noticed it was going in at an angle and I wore down the top. The driver kept rubbing the knob. I removed it so I can get a new screw and try again. The set is secure and functions well with one screw, but it was made for 2. This knob took up a lot of my time, moreso than any other knob I have installed. I should probably return the unit and try another style. Thanks for this video.
If I were you, I think I would return it because of the screw you can't install and tighten. Without both screws, it will get loose over time. Good luck with your project and have a great day.

Yeah I've watched other videos on installing keyed door knobs and I have installed another brand. But until I saw this video specifically about Kwikset, I did not understand the twisting of the inside knob for screw fitting and leaving the screws attached to the outside knob. I spent a frustrating hour failing yesterday and fortunately found your video today. Very helpful. Thanks
Me, either!!! The instructions were confusing to me regarding the twisting of the knob. It's a great improvement in the door know world. Too bad they didn't explain it better. Thank God for Wayne's video!
You good sir just saved me a night with my front door with no doorknob... I was trying to put the doorknob before the screws because in my head that's what it looks like when it's in/. screwed around for 1h before watching your video and getting it immediately.
I had installed the doorknob last night and I noticed that it wouldn’t close! So I waited till this morning to try again. I watched other videos and they would not talk about which screws went where. Luckily I found your video and it needed to just flip it around lol! Thank you!
Thank you so much, this was helpful! Our doorknob came off in my son's hand this morning and leave the door cracked was letting a ton of cold air in (record lows here this week!). With the help of your video I managed to get it put back together :)
Wonderful! So glad this was helpful for you. Thank you for taking the time to leave your nice comment. We enjoy knowing we were able to help someone with our video. Stay warm and have a great day.
I was about to call a locksmith to replace my outdated door knobs. With your easy to follow instructions I feel confident replacing them myself. Thanks.
Great video! Very helpful. I'm about to install my second one today. When installing the first one, I had trouble with those long screws. My own fault! I removed those screws, even though the instructions clearly said NOT to remove them! I couldn't figure out the concept from their instructions. Thankfully, I did manage to get the thing installed, but with a lot of frustration! Now that I SEE how this mechanism (ingenious!) works, it makes sense and I feel confident that the door knob installation today will be a piece of cake! Thanks!!!
Yes, sometimes the instructions are not very clear. I'm glad you found this helpful. Thank you for the kind comment and for visiting, have a great day.
You're very welcome! We have a great deal of DIY Videos, that you might find helpful. Thank you for the kind comment and for visiting, have a great day.
OMG, I'm having so much trouble installing this door knob! This is by far the best video, but I still can't manage to install. It looks easy but when adding the interior knob, the long screws and the outer ring that needs turning are just not working 😞
When installing the lock and it binds or wont' operate smoothly it is most likely caused by miss alignment. Loosen the screws and try to center the inside and outside parts and retighten the screws. Most of the time this will correct the problem. Thank you for visiting and have a great day.
Great video! You were going to explain why the plunger gets stuck and binds. That’s what’s happening to my door. Any reason for that or should I just replace it?
Most likely the 2 door knobs are misaligned. Loosen the screws and try aligning them better. if the plunger works well then the screws are loose, the problem is a bind with the parts not aligned when the screws are tightened. Good luck with your project and have a great day.
Glad it helped. Thank you for taking the time to let us know that our video was helpful. We enjoy knowing that we were able to help you. Have a great day!
Wayne - Your video is great! My dad didn’t teach me stuff like this so I really appreciate you taking the time to teach us. Just put in a Kwikset doorknob for my mother-in-law whose husband just passed away. Now just has a new doorknob she desperately needed. Thanks again!
Thanks for posting this video Wayne. I tried this knob and couldn't install it, directions were terrible! This videos helps but I like the old style knobs better. Looks odd with holes and sunk back screws. Would rather have hidden screws using this style, minus the holes.
Hey Wayne, at 7:14 in the video you were gonna explain what to do if the plunger wasn’t going in and out. Could you explain what to do in that scenario?
Most likely the 2 door knobs are misaligned. Loosen the screws and try aligning them better. if the plunger works well then the screws are loose, the problem is a bind with the parts not aligned when the screws are tightened. Good luck with your project and have a great day.
The one we purchased was from Lowes and I think this is the same one. Lowes Item # 287039 | Model # 740CN 3 SMT CP K4 www.lowes.com/pd/Kwikset-Cameron-Polished-Brass-Smartkey-Keyed-Entry-Door-Knob-Single-Pack/50219667 Good luck with your project and have a great day.
Wayne, the Kwikset handles I am trying to install have the screws too far inside the knob so it makes getting screwdriver at them very difficult. The screwdriver is at way too much of angle to get a good bite into the screw! Any remedies for this?
Hello John, Go back to the video and scan forward to about the 6:00 mark. Notice how far the screw heads stick out before I install the inside assembly. It sounds to me like the screws are screwed in too far to start with. Back them out some before starting . I hope this helps. Good luck with your project and have a great day.
Hi Wayne, I just bought a kwikset door knob. The latch part has two very little nubs on the top and bottom of the latch about 1" from the plunger - just as yours has in the video. Those nubs prevent me from putting the plunger all of the way in. Should I just bank it in with a hammer? Thank you in advance! )
I am not sure of the nubs you are talking about but I have a good idea. I would trim the door cavity to make room for them. Good luck with your project and have a great day.
Thanks for the video. Unfortunately you skipped over the one piece of info I needed. I installed a knob and the latch will not spring back out when I tighten everything. You described the exact problem and said “if that happens..” and then you did not provide the solution. I would appreciate it if you could advise on how to remedy that issue.
Oops, Sorry I missed that. If the lockset is binding it is because it is not aligned correctly. Loosen the 2 screws and wiggle the door knobs a little. then retighten the screws. It only takes a small amount of not being centered to cause this problem. I hope this helps and thank you for visiting.
Thank you so much!!! Your video saved me so much stress. I showed Home Depot worker your video and we could only find one in their store that had the screws preput and able to be pushed thru the other side without removing those screws. Genius idea! The worker at the store had not seen this before and he also wanted one but of course no more. Interesting enough is Kwik Set must be doing away with this “easy install “ as we found other ones that were packed in the same box and had the same skew number but when we took those ones out of their boxes they did not have the inner door knob that has the twisted “easy mechanism” where it springs back after easily pushing thru. Would you happen to know what the trick will be for me to find more of these that are just like this set up in your video? Thank you again. I subscribed to your channel so I can check out some of your other videos.
Hi Lisa, I checked at my local Lowe's Store and found the Kwikset with Smartkey Security feature had the "easy install" for the screws. I also checked out the Kwikset website and found them there as well. Thank you for the kind comment and for visiting, have a great day.
@@DIYwithWayne thank you for getting back with me. I went to another Home Depot and was able to purchase three more like this and am very happy to have found them.
I was looking for a video that described how these pre-inserted screws work when you twist on the other knob that goes on to them. I Followed the directions very closely but the knob still disengages at times when you turn the knob. I don’t like this design. I’d rather have screws that you could screw in and tighten rather than having to turn the knob to make them catch and then screw them in. I noticed that the heads of the screws are kind of small and that is easy for the door knob to slide off of them. Have you experienced the same thing or am I doing it wrong?
I have not had the problem you describe. Sorry but I don't have a suggestion of how to correct your problem. Good luck with your project and have a great day.
If it is a Kwikset Set, you don't bush down. Align the parts and slightly turn the inside part so the screw heads go into place. Then tighten the screws. I hope this helps. Thank you for visiting and have a great day.
I'm replacing my lock because it has quit functioning when turning the knob. I cannot open the door and cannot get the lock to pull it out. Do I need to take the hinge pins off and take off the door to access the lock mechanism??
Most locks have 2 screws on the inside that secure the lock parts together. If you don't have this, they may be hidden behind a cover. You can take the door off it's hinges but that may not help. On most locks, the only screws on the edge of the door secure the plunger that goes into the striker plate. Removing this alone will not allow the lock to be removed. Good luck with your project and have a great day.
Ugh. My outer knob won’t come out from the center part. Might be my dad re-used mismatched parts? Thumb was sticking and wouldn’t latch so I was trying to remove and reinstall
I got this part down. I’m installing them inside my house because of a new roommate. I want to be able to lock my room when I leave. But so far the door will not latch with this new knob.
Thank you, thank you, thank you. Loved how you explained everything in detail. My first time doing this. Great video. 👍🏽

Thanks.

You are so welcome! Thank you for the kind comment and for visiting, have a great day.

OMG, I'm having so much trouble installing this door knob! This is by far the best video, but I still can't manage to install. It looks easy but when adding the interior knob, the long screws and the outer ring that needs turning are just not working 😞
Thanks Wayne! I think I’ll try it tomorrow!
Good luck with your project and have a great day.
Thank you so much!!! I replaced a doorknob and it looks and works fantastic!!!

Thank you for visiting and have a great day.
Thanks, your video helped a lot. You were about to explain why they stick when first being installed...can you talk about that? Thanks.
When installing the lock and it binds or wont' operate smoothly it is most likely caused by miss alignment. Loosen the screws and try to center the inside and outside parts and retighten the screws. Most of the time this will correct the problem. Thank you for visiting and have a great day.
You are an angel, thank you so much!!!!

Thank you Wayne. Who loves you. I do
Thank you for visiting and your vote of confidence!
Great tips that make the installation much easier.

Wayne - Your video is great! My dad didn’t teach me stuff like this so I really appreciate you taking the time to teach us. Just put in a Kwikset doorknob for my mother-in-law whose husband just passed away. Now just has a new doorknob she desperately needed. Thanks again!
Scott, you are very welcome. I really do enjoy helping people with their DIY projects. Thank you for the kind comment and have a great day.
You could play Hank Hill if they ever made a king of the hill movie. Great advice
Yep! Been told that before. Thank you for visiting and have a great day.
Thank you for this!
You are very welcome and thank you for visiting, have a great day.
Thanks for posting this video Wayne. I tried this knob and couldn't install it, directions were terrible! This videos helps but I like the old style knobs better. Looks odd with holes and sunk back screws. Would rather have hidden screws using this style, minus the holes.
Hello Anthony Carducci, Thanks for the comment and for visiting. Have a great day.
Very well done.
Thank you for the kind comment and for visiting, have a great day.
You should probably change the strike plate as well to make the lock look more beautiful
I would have but this was our basement door and it rarely gets used. Thank you for visiting and have a great day.
Thank you Wayne
Thank you for visiting and have a great day.
Very helpful -- thank you --
You are very welcome and thank you for visiting, have a great day.
With your help I was able to install one for my bedroom. Now I can be assured my crazy aunt won't be able invade my bedroom anymore.
Glad you found this video helpful. Thank you for visiting and have a great day.
It was hard to keep track of which side was outside, but good instructions, thanks.
Thank you for visiting and have a great day.
Thanks for your video. If u don't mind could you pls advise the model number of this door knob.
The one we purchased was from Lowes and I think this is the same one. Lowes Item # 287039 | Model # 740CN 3 SMT CP K4 www.lowes.com/pd/Kwikset-Cameron-Polished-Brass-Smartkey-Keyed-Entry-Door-Knob-Single-Pack/50219667
Good luck with your project and have a great day.
Thank you in advance!
)
I am not sure of the nubs you are talking about but I have a good idea. I would trim the door cavity to make room for them. Good luck with your project and have a great day.
Haha we like to see the dog featured more!
Hi Nina, we don't really have much choice, she likes to photo bomb our videos. We just need to teach her how to hold a screwdriver. Have a great day!
You are the awesome man
Thank you for the kind comment and for visiting, have a great day.
Anyway have the issue where the knob doesn’t push down to catch the screws? I got them apart that way, but now it won’t budge
If it is a Kwikset Set, you don't bush down. Align the parts and slightly turn the inside part so the screw heads go into place. Then tighten the screws. I hope this helps. Thank you for visiting and have a great day.
Thanks for your help.
You are welcome, thank you for visiting and have a great day.
Thank you so much
You're most welcome!
It is likely binding and if so it can be difficult to remove. Try wiggling it a lot. Good luck with your project and have a great day.
Thanks for the explanation. However, I really hate this type of door lock. I just do not see the advantage of the spring loaded vs. traditional.
That's the great thing about having options. You can get what you want. Thank you for visiting and have a great day.
I got this part down. I’m installing them inside my house because of a new roommate. I want to be able to lock my room when I leave. But so far the door will not latch with this new knob.
Moved the strike plate. That worked. One down one to go.
Good job, that would have been my suggestion. Thank you for visiting and have a great day.
Thanks paps !!!!
You're welcome. Thank you for visiting and have a great day.
Jah bless, me be having locked doors again!
