  • In this video, I'm going to show you how to simulate chrome on model cars using bare metal foil.
Chrome effects look awesome and are easy to make with a few quick tips. This technique works well for exterior or interior chrome. I even use it for door handles.
This video shows me applying metal foil to a 1950 Oldsmobile 1/25 scale model from Revell.
This model won two awards at the Rumble in the Rockies model car contest, due in part to the chrome effects.
Check out this video for a quick and easy how to that will show you how to give your model car the award-winning edge with realistic chrome.

0:13 Those are NOT Q-Tips. Those are fake CNN Q-Tips! Otherwise, excellent tutorial. A+++++

Putting clear-coat OVER BMF seems, to me, to defeat the whole purpose of using it- it won't "hang" realistically as on a "real" car, where there is very narrow but definable separation between the chrome trim and the car's painted sheet metal; on the model this separation will be hidden under the clear coat. Also, depending on what type of clear coat is used, the natural metal, chrome appearance of the BMF will be diminished or even lost.

Thanks for that info! I have been searching for a video that explains whether or not to clear first and then apply BMF, or clear over the BMF. I was thinking to clear over the BMF just because I felt it would "glue" the BMF to the model, but I have also heard mention that over time it may begin to tarnish under the clear coat. No problem with the BMF sticking to the clear coat?

The bigger issue here is what seat belts are those? They look way more realistic than even detail masters!! Please , do tell…

Nice job on that foil. You're the only one I've seen explain it in a break down method like this. Keep up the nice work, and awesome videos. 😁👍

Great guide! Well thank you. I will add my experience: I applied Bare metal foil on a matte surface and the foil did not stick at all. She couldn't even cut, she was still moving. On a matte surface NO! - on a glossy surface YES!

All I could say is patience is a virtue I had such a hard time following the line on the model because they were very shallow lines but the beauty of it is you can pull it off and do it again I had to do it twice in a couple of spots

Thank you for a great tutorial. I've yet to use the Bare Metal Foil I purchased and plan to practice quite a bit before using it on my 1954 Hudson Horned. I'm a little intimidated by it but your video made me feel a bit more easy about attacking this project.
