I love my 24-105. Stays on my A7iii and now my A7iv far more than any other lens. If I could only have one lens this is it hands-down! You are so on target about f4 too. Has never been an issue to me either.
I shoot all of my weddings with this lens and have been wanting to move onto 24-70 only because of the f2.8 option, sacrificing the money and the weight of the lens. But whenever I look at my footage I shot, I can't complain of the quality that I get especially for the weight and the focal length versatility. Watching this video makes my mind stick to this 24-105 f4 for a bit longer. Thank you Ryan for taking care of my gas

I switched out my 24-70 GM for this lens. No regrets. The extra range, compactness and atabilization is great.
Also there is more bokeh at 105mm F4 than at 70mm F2.8.

actually i have the 24-105 and want to upgrade to a used 24-70 2.8. Sometimes light is to less and auto focus needs to long for me.
[Update] Now upgraded to the GM, i have to say a got used to them. i think its still the better option if you looking for this cinematic look. the 2.8f is also more noticeable by setting your lighting. to mention, the auto focus works very efficiently also with an older a7 camera.
but, camera shake is also more recognizable than the 24-105 f/4. yes the 105 f/4 has OSS but if you go out over the 24mm, it only works partially as intended.

@@M0ritsch Yea it totally depends on many factors. Also newer bodies have gyro stabilization and active stabilization to make up for lack of oss in video.
@@hiawrj In my experience a6600 IBIS in video is useless so ended up buying Zhiyun M3 !! My whole set is heavier as Full Frame user ( a6600, Crane M3, sigma 30, sigma 56, sony 16-55, godox XPro s with tt350s and tt600 8xAA rechargeable battery and pixel G1s led I do have other accessories also but I leave it under my table 😰
I'm a full time photographer for one of the top outdoor advertising agencies in Hong Kong and I use this lens like 90% time, this lens is so underrated

How is this lens for indoor shooting and pictures.
Really great video on the 24-105! It’s 2022 and Sony has killed it in the imaging tech. Their low light handling has addressed the issue of f2.8 vs f4.0 for low-light, run and gun situations (which may mean setting up lights isn’t feasible). Having that extra stop of light doesn’t mean as much when you have the option of shooting at 12800 ISO and still get usable footage 🤯

I've used this lens quite a lot for filming and I still think it's the most versatile lens for alpha series cameras. My main complaints are (1) the zoom ring is too stiff making it impossible to zoom smoothly while filmning, resulting in visible jerkiness when changing focal length, and (2) the OSS great to have but it's not the most effective I've came across - a few years ago I filmed a lot of hendheld with both the a7iii + 24-105 and the FS5+18-105 PZ and I found the FS5 footage to be more stable despite not having IBIS. I also used the 18-105 PZ on the A7iii (APS-C crop) and got more stable footage than with the 24-105. These are minor complaints for a very small, cheap and versatile lens for filmning, but if Sony where to update it I wish they added PZ (Power Zoom) and improved the OSS.
The 24-105mm is stunning and now my main travel lense even though in the past I took additional lenses. Another nice function is use the focus hold to toggle aps-c mode for that extra reach.

Love it bro! Totally agree with you, I find myself shooting at f/4 and up way more often than 2.8. Huge misconception that confused and messed me up when I was first starting
I have both GM 2470 and the G 24105. I left the GM for photography only, it's impossible to use on a gimbal and I tend to use this 24 105 for almost everything photo & video. It's amazing what it can do!

go bro! one lens is not the "cats meow", get the 24-70 f2.8 or the canon 28-70 f2.0
As a filmmaker of narrative content, I usually try to stay with lenses that are f/2.8 at its largest aperture. But, the 24-105mm lens has so many variations in use that it would be a great lens to have.
The alternative to this if you really wanted the f/2.8 is just a 24-70 lens with a custom button set to super 35 crop mode (1.6 X crop). That way you have a range of 24-112mm while still having that 2.8 aperture available.

@@RyanKao I wish companies would make OSS available on their f/2.8 zoom lenses! All the f/4 ones seem to have them, even the 24-70 f/4 lenses.

No joke my go to lens. Just shot with it in dumping snow over the weekend and it did incredible!

I'm coming from APS-C, and actually f/4 on full-frame is about the same depth of field as f/2.8 on APS-C. It's more than enough for cinematic bokeh. The extra reach and optical stabilization in this lens are huge, especially for handheld, run & gun style shooting.
Actually, the depth of field has absolutely NOTHING to do with the size of the sensor.
Use mine ALL the time! Used it to shoot 56 weddings last year. It's always on my cam A on a gimbal. Then I use a 50 prime handheld. I dont really need anything else but maybe a 90 macro. Great video man!!!

Paired with my A7iv this lens is stellar. I was 3 years late because of the f/4 then realized I mostly
shoot f/4 on my faster primes. This thing is perfectly sharp corner to corner at every focal length.
How good is it in low light with Sony a7 4? I’m debating to get 24-105 or tamron 28-75 2.8
I actively swapped out my 24-70 2.8 for this lens: I don't know, there's something about 105 that I'm really drawn to, whether it's in video or in photo. And for the time I need the blurry background, I got an old vintage 50mm 1.4, which cover all my needs. I really feel that for documentary work, a 24-105 is one of the best choice you can ever make especially as you said in today's FF sony cameras.
This is exactly why I am still shooting on my Sony a6300 and the 18-105 for most all of my video. The versatility is incredible. I also kinda get annoyed with videos when there is too much bokeh and you get no context of where anyone is. UA-cam has become too obsessed with bokeh and shallow depth of field in my opinion. Great video showing the benefits of this lens. It's honestly probably the one I would pick up first if I ever decide to go full frame. Pretty happy with my current kit though to be honest.

It's the second Lens I bought when I started my UA-cam. The first was the 20mm G for head shot (awesome Lens). The 24-105mm is a great value, really versatile, I bought my used one 700$, great quality with all the feature you want on a Lens (OSS, AF/MF toggle, Fast AF, Good aperture).

I love shooting documentary and this is the lens I choose for all the reasons you said. I looove it. I had a tamron 28-75mm pair with the 17-28mm but after a month I realize that 28mm is too narrow and 75mm is not close enough (for beautiful face reaction). So I bought the 24-105mm pair with the 16-35mm f4 and I've never look back since.
Literally almost exactly where I'm at right now with deciding what to do with my lens setup lol
That Sigma 24-70 f2.8 is a very versatile lens, extremely sharp and has great closeup capability. It's hard to decide which lens, but the minimum focus on my 24-105 bothers me. Instead of choosing an FF body with a 24mp sensor, I decided to go with the A7R3. Those extra pixels (42), nearly doubling the other cameras, really give pictures that extra snap. I have the a6600 for messing around shooting, but when it comes to bird or nature photography, I pull out my R3.

I always contemplate bringing either my 24-105mm or Tamron 28-200mm when I travel. Both huge winners. Even today I still can’t decide.
In terms of choosing 24-70mm or 24-105 the reach of 105 is a clear winner for me vs 2.8 (I sold my 24-70 cause I never use it).

I'm a primary photographer with cinematography taking the back seat. I sold my 24-105 for the Sigma 24-70 Art. I have no regrets based on the work I do, but the 24-105 is an amazing lens. I would consider buying it again if video becomes more integrated in my workflow. Great video

Totally agree….. Just got back from an 8 day road trip to Bryce, Zion and Grand Canyons. The 24-105 never left my A1. I had a, also fantastic Sony, 20, 1.8 on my A7 IV for some Astro stuff. The1200 + images I ended up with were some of my best work, in my humble opinion, of my 40+ years of photography. But, If there were only 1 lens available ever, it would be the 24-105 G OSS !!!! Thanks for a great video…..
I picked up a Sony RX0 and RX0 ii to go with my ZV-1, ZV-E10. and A7C and I'm loving the 24mm f/4 lens. I was using an 17-28mm Tamron lens on my A7C but the lens projects forward and the shot is almost as wide with the RX0. I like the image coming out of the RX0. It's a little bit noisier than the RX0 ii but it's got character. I like the look of the lens, even if it's a bit dark, it just looks good.
I've seen a lot of people switching their 24-70's for this lens. About time f4 lenses get some love

Have just used Sony 24-105mm.f.4 for a wedding today with my beloved Sony 35mm.f.1.4 and it is a lifesaver in many situations, so I have become even more happy with it even though I was already satisfied with it :)

spot on bro! i have started using my 24-105 for just about everything video related on both my FS5II and A7s3. My Sigma 24-70 has been staying at home, and despite it's awesomeness, may be on the block soon.
I love that lens. I do wish it were a 2.8, but the stabilization and focal range is pretty darn perfect.

24-105 is a great range. I have the Sigma 24-105mm f/4.0 DG OS HSM ART Lens for Canon EF that I use with a Sigma MC-11 adapter (Canon EF to Sony E) full frame. Works well.
I'm looking to buy my first lens for my Sony a7siii. I need it for content creation and hopefully client work later on. Should I get the 24-105 or 24-70 for my first lens? I was also thinking about 16-35mm but I feel like it will give me too little versatility.

@@jango7357 either is fine honestly. Just ask yourself if you need the extra reach of the 105 and decide based off that. 99% of jobs will be fine with the 24-70 though

Hi Ryan, I got this lens together with my a7iii. I am also filming a lot of sports and run&gun videos. I searched for new lenses the last days, considered to buy a few primes or a zoom lenses with f2.8... but then saw your video and yeah you are so right! In just a few moments switching lenses would be nice, but most of the time this lens is delivering and is saving time to get the shot.
It's the big brother of my 18-105 F4. This thing is worth its weight in gold.

Question: when using active stabalisation is the lens stabalisation still helping or working.
Makes sense! And yes when using active mode I still had the optical stabilization on as well. They do work together.
I wish they made r2 with 24-105 f2.8-4 so you could make low light shots on wide end at least
I have the Sony G 24mm-105mm. I like the lens, but there are too things I wish it had. I wish it was a F2.8 instead of a f4. And two, I wish it was 135mm on the long end.

Enjoyed the video. I tried this lens with an A7siii on a Ronin SC2 gimbal, it's great for out and about shots but for interviews with the gimbal there's a really bad wobble in the shots that makes them almost useless. I don't get the same wobble with Tamron 28-75. Interested to know if anyone else has the same problem using it on a gimabl?
I know it may sound contradictory, but when using stabilizers like a Ronin you should actually disable all internal camera stabilization. The IBIS will actually fight the motion of the gimbal and give you that wobble effect. Hope this helps!
With the a7IV the 24-105 f4 work as a powerful team.

I love the lens, I’m using it a lot. I’m still surprised how good results could be out of it.
One complain though:
The zoom ring in my copy works quite badly. In the middle of the range it is okay, but closer to the edge - the most stiff it is. Compering to sony internal zooming lenses it is a pain to use…
it's quite possible that if sony were to release a 24-105 f2.8 GM lens for FF then the hype around the 24-70 lenses would almost completely die off.
It would also cost an organ…

How do you feel about the external zoom when it comes to gimbal work? Say your shooting at 24mm and then zoom out to the higher ranges, isit a pain to constantly have to rebalance your gimbal?
I have the RSC2 and feel this lens would be an amazing film making tool, if it was internal zoom, it's a perfect lens lol

Hope you're doing well. I'm a beginner photographer and I was planning on buying a new zoom lens. I initially was looking to buy Sony 18-105mm f4.0 Zoom G lens but after watching your video on Sony 24-105mm f4.0 G OSS, I'm slightly confused on which one to choose. Could you please help me with this?
I have loved this lens, but I do think the sigma 24-70 is a more versatile option when it comes to my work. Furthermore it’s also better quality in sharpness and build. I have had wrapping issues with parring the image sabilisationen in the lens with the stability in the body. I do therefore not recommend using those together.
Can you explain more on the wrapping issue with image stabilization? I'm looking at the Sigma 24-70 too.
@@edmundtaiping the issue is primarily with canon lenses, but people have had issues with the IBIS together with stabilizing in the lens
I still use my sony 24-105 as a hybrid shooter and sigma 24-70 f2.8 for professional purpose. They are magic combo
