I have owned this lens since it was introduced and agree with your review. Sharp, Clean, Fast, and OSS Stable. I initially bought it to cover the 35, 55, and 85 mm ranges in one lens, and this one did what was expected. F4. is the new f2.8 with the Sony cameras available, and the ability to gather light. This lens has also never let me down when doing portraits, Real Estate, and other requirements. Once you mount this lens, it is unlikely you will swap it out much! Oh, and this is NOT a kit lens in any way.
I bought this lens 2nd hand for $750 and now just waiting for my a7IV to arrive. The quality of the lens and how its made its top notch as well and can’t wait to try it out.
Great video! I do have this lens, and one comment -- I would no way put this in the kit lens category; the build quality is phenomenal, overall image sharpness is fantastic, has a fixed aperture, that original price point! Literally the only thing I don't love is its low light performance (on my A73, soon to be upgraded!), but I really only notice it on low light video, not low light photography. I agree - I wish they'd re-make this at 2.8, or even make a GM version of it, because then it'd be unstoppable. Thanks for the review, and glad you're seeing great results paired with the A74 (including the image stabilization differences -- thanks for covering that!).
I bought this lens with the a7iii when it came out and it’s been my 99% go-to lens ever since. Holds up so damn well, it’s actually ridiculous. It makes it tough for me to justify buying anything else! Even bokeh is pretty nice when at 105mm. Such a beast piece of gear.
Another lens to note for the A7IV users who want to film in 4k 60 is the aps-c E PZ 18-105 F4 G OSS. The lens is super sharp and since the camera is already cropping in there's no vignetting. Plus its only $650 brand new.
Fine video! I agree. I have had the 24-105 since I moved to Sony mirrorless in 2018 and it's my go-to lens for so many scenarios. Plus, given the impressive low-light performance of my Sony A7Siii and FX3, I don't suffer much (if at all) having to use a higher ISO (because of the f4). You're right, for the price and the performance, it gets the job done.
I just recently dove in to photography and bought the A7iv. After extensive research I realized I just could NOT afford all the lenses I really wanted so I went for this one as a compromise for daily shooting and then the 14mm 1.8 gm for what this can't give me. It arrives today and I'm glad to hear I made a good choiceà
I got the Sigma 24-70mm f2.8 I'm very happy with this one it does not have OSS but other than that is an AMAZING lens, strongly recommended.Nice video as usual!!!
I also have the Sigma lens paired with a new A 7IV. We do have the option of punching in to Super 35 mode which will give us a 105 MM equivalent and 14 MP to work with. Not bad, since we will have permanent F2.8 as well.
I got the lens last week, now just waiting for the a7iv to arrive!! ha ha Glad you did this video, really helped me confirm why I bought it! Hope to see you do more on the a7iv brother!
I own this 24-105mm f/4 OSS and I am very happy with it. Beside this I have the 16-35mm f/4 OSS, the 70-200 f/2.8 GM2 OSS and the 14mm f/1.8 ultra wide. Those are in my backpack when I am in the mountains.
Thank you so much for this video. I have the Sony a7iv and have been using it for a couple months. It’s the first camera I’ve ever purchased. Ive been using the lens that came with it and now just purchased this one! Super excited to have my first real lens. Keep being great brother
I have the 24mm 1.4 GM lens which is gonna live on the camera almost full time, and also the kit lens 28-70mm oss, just waiting on the camera here in the US. Your videos were most insightful, thank you!!
I own much faster wide and telephotos primes but the 24-105 F4 is the one lens I have on my Sony most often! It is not the perfect lens but under most circumstances, it is close to it! I have absolutely been hugely satisfied by its performance for last few years! I have set the eye autofocus on the side button and the tracking has been great!
I shoot with this lens on a a7IV, a7RIV, and a a7SIII. I fell in love with this focal length when the studio I shot for at the time transitioned from medium format to DSLR; the Canon EF 24-105mm f/4 L is still a work horse lens for them. I can't get enough of my 55 1.8 Zeiss. It has flown 50+ times in the six years I've owned it and the thing is still sharp af. Sometimes a good copy of a lens gives you false emotion for the lens 😂.
Every so often I consider selling this lens and upgrading to an 2.8 but I use this lens so often. My IV is due in Feb so keen to experience this combo myself
Yes, de finitely not a cheap kit lens. The best medium range (in mm's) made by Sony. Not as fast as the Sony F: 2.8 24 - 70 mm, but a much more versatile lens for the working professional. Medium wide-angle and short telephoto combining excellent optics, I'd be lost without mine.
Thanks for recommending a cheaper alternative so many UA-camrs like to push Sony g lenses like everybody has that kind of money . Most photographer are hobbyist which makes f4 more then good enough

Hey, ordered this lens for my a7sIII. Can you tell me how the active stabilization acts at night/lowlight? Are there issues same as gopros hypersmooth has? Would be great to get an answer 🙂 thanks for your videos 👏🏽👍🏽
I see this lens is for winter sale for less than the new Tamron 28-75 mm, and I consider getting the 24-105 instead of the Tamron G2. Do you think there is a possibility Sigma will make an art lens of this focal range soon? Or that Sony will make a GM version?
This will be tricky to write; I'm considering buying this lens and get out of my current Tamron 28-200. Nothing against the Tamron, but in general I've noticed those versatile lenses that goes from 2x - 2xx or 3xx are usually a big let down. I'm trying to move from Meh or Okay lenses but not get into GM Serie which are too expensive for a hobbyist as myself who doesn't monetize his work. I don't know if my reasoning is correct but I feel like this F4 is made to 105 and not 200 or above in order to avoid decreasing the quality, which is the opposite of the 24 - 240 Sony or 70 - 300 Sony .. Also I want it for the OSS, though I don't do videos, and F4 isn't a problem as long as the quality remain good I can get out of the 200 that I own. Would be nice to hear some feedbacks as I'm still not sure a 100% to get this one or not.
Dear Jason, you are phenomenal, more than the Sony 24-105mm f4 lens. You always give solutions in your videos and they are also wise solutions. Could you take away a curiosity please? Do you think the NEW Tamron 28-75 2.8 is sharper than the Sony 24-105mm f4 lens? Now I ask you only your thought, but don't smile please. ;) If you had to make a documentary in 4K with the Sony A7 IV, documenting the daily life of indigenous peoples in remote areas of the planet, would you use 25p or 50p? Thank you for your precious info.
Nice review but I do have a bone to pick with you. A kit lens that costs more than $1k? That is more than some cameras! Never heard anyone refer to it as a kit lens. Would love to know who does. Also , with the iso capability of Sony full frame cameras who needs a 1 stop faster lens that costs more with a shorter range? The bokeh diff, which is way overblown by most UA-camrs, is negligible. If we want serious bokeh we use a fast prime anyway. This is a great serious all around general carry lens for most of us. In spite of my disagreement, you have a great channel and I love most all of your content!
I don't call it a kit lens, sony and photography places do. They sell them as a 'kit with new cameras so it is classified as a "kit lens" by default. Regardless of the untitled name I absolutely love this lens and its capabilities
Totally! Why would you give up that great range 24-105 for an extra stop when it’s so much easier to push your ISO instead. You’re giving up very valuable wide and telephoto. I have this lens and didn’t even consider hobbling my range at both ends for a stop!
great video Jason, but there's one thing i don't understand when i watch your videos and you show the stabilization of a camera,i know what Ois and ibis are but i don't understand what "AS" means thanks
I compared my Sony 24-105mm f4 and Tamron 70-180mm f2.8 lenses at 105mm f4 at ISO 80 shutter speed 1/250 s on my Sony a7 IV photos at 400% zoom in very small print photographed at 5 meters. My conclusions: Tamron has more contrast and brighter colors, but Sony seems to be a little bit sharper. I also noticed that video mode stabilization is much better on lenses with optical stabilization (Sony - my respect!). I also have a Sigma 14-24mm f2.8 and Samyang 85mm f1.4, as well as a Samyang 45mm f1.8.
Your image tests make this look fine at 24mm without any major vignette or barrel/pin-cushion distortion, but other videos that I have looked seem to suggest otherwise so now I'm confused. I've ordered this online and it hasn't shipped yet, and the other videos were to bad I was considering cancelling the order, but it looked fine here, so I'm confused now. Were the images here in 24mm focal length lens/profile corrected and could that be why they don't look as bad?
Hi Jason, My name is Alan, I just found your channel and I’m so happy I did. Soon I’m getting A 7IV I like the Gage you have on your Sony A7 IV could you tell me about this gage please I mean what brand and where can I get it. Thanks 🙏
I have the 24-105 G; however, after using the Tamron for photography, I see little reason to keep the 24-105 G. The extra speed with that range has proven to be too useful for my usage. I have the 16-35 GM for the wider end. The Tamron seems faster than the G zoom for AF to me.
I do agree with the 35-150. Onky if you don't need that 24mm wide angle. OSS is another reason the sony is better then the tamron. It purely depends what you create
Now that this video is a year old would you consider the 20-70mm f4 instead? I hear it is sharper even cropped in to 105mm. Is lack of OSS a huge deal?
I would like to add that I really try to avoid shooting 24mm and 105 at f4 and f22 because of the lack of sharpness in the corners. If I can, I'll shoot something like 26mm at f5, etc.
Would you recommend this lens for talking head videos? I ordered the a74 and I Heard- someone say that there is a lens, that makes you look better than in real life… I have good lighting. I just don’t know what lens is good for that. I want to make cinematic looking beauty editorials and reviews…
Hi Jason, thanks for the review. I've also seen quite many people comparing this lens to Tamron 28-200. It seems they are quite close in performance and Tamron offers a longer reach. Just wonder what's your take in this? Have a nice day :)
Nice, I was looking into a full-frame lens with OSS. Glad to see you made a review for it and you answered all of my questions. Definitely considering purchasing this lens now. Love how smooth it looked handheld with everything turned on. Great because I love to go on hiking and backing trips with my wife and friends. That extra bit of stabilization would be great for walking and panning shots.
I am struggling so much, I got the 24-70 f/2.8 GM for the same price as the 24-105G OSS so now I have both. But I need to pick one to sell, what would be your advice?
For commercials where everything is planned beforehand, and can be staged over and over again...(and with budgets to rent lenses (for best outcome).. I have trouble ro understand why you would take this lens, however good it is for always getting "the shot" wile with fixed, very fast lenses you'd still be at wondering witch one to mount and if it's worthwhile...
It's funny. I have neglected this lens for so long in my kit in favor of 1.4 and 2.8 primes or short zoom range. Then one evening I had to use it and was so satisfied not changing out lenses and I found that the bokeh is not much less than f2.8 after 50mm. It's just crazy how many lenses this replaces and it's so damn sharp too. It's literally the best lens I've got now for my use case. UA-camrs marketing specs has really pushed new people starting out in the wrong direction. Learn the craft folks. Then learn how to use the specs more as specific tools for certain looks.
I'm thinking about going with the Sigma 24-70 art or the 28-70 contemporary. What would you suggest for video work as well as photography? After that I'd like to get the 35 and 85 1.4s from sigma
If you have the money I recommend the 24-70 art. Perfect lens for the price. Much cheaper than the GM version. You will find a lot more use out of the 35mm 1.4 than the 85mm 1.4 unless you're always doing portraits then 85 it is
I am thinking getting one for my studio work with flash which gonna shoot at 5.6, f8, maybe even f11. So f4 aperture is no issue for me. Is it sharp? That is all I care about.
@@JasonMorrisphotocinema I agree. I shot a number of photos of family at a b-day party. Got a few shots of my son in room light with help from daylight. I blew up the image to match the seen in The Good, The Bad and the Ugly when the three were at Sad Hill Cemetery. On a 34 inch ultrawide, I was blown away at the sharpness of the skin, eyebrows and lashes. But the cherry on top was the eye. It was like looking at the shiniest steel ball bearing or marble. The photo was taken with my A7R3. I'm giving up neither.
The 24-105 zoom lens is always versatile and great. But Nikon is the best. As its F4 full frame versatile lens is 24-120mm which they have carried over from there Nikon F-Mount lens range to their Nikon Z-Mount Lens range wish all camera companies did this range in there versatile zoom lens. I intend to use the Nikon 24-120 on the Sony A74 and Sony A7siii.
Hi thanks for the video. Im looking for some advice on a wide angle lens for the a7iv If I'm not mistaken you've suggested the Laowa 9mm apsc? Do you have any videos shot with that setup. I'm mainly interested in real estate video. Thank you
Did you ever consider the Tamron 17-70 crop sensor lens? In super 35 mode that makes it a 25.5-105 at f2.8 with stabilization on a full frame camera? If my math is correct that still gives you 22 megapixels. For stills there is a loss, but for video I don't think it makes that big of a difference.
The Sony 24-105mm F4 G is considered a kit lens in Australia? It isn’t in the US. It’s a Sony G lens, constant aperture of F4, 24-105mm range and costs a minimum of $1100 brand new. Far from a kit lens imo.
The only reason some consider it a kit lens is because it is sometimes sold with the alpha cameras and the FX6 as a "basic" starter lens. I don't consider it a kit lens
It depends which camera store it's purchased from. I don't think Sony sell it in a box with a lens anymore. This lens is the most common lens sold with sony bodies out of the box

Hi Jason,
My name is Alan, I just found your channel and I’m so happy I did. Soon I’m getting
A 7IV I like the Gage you have on your Sony
A7 IV could you tell me about this gage please I mean what brand and where can I get it.
The 35-150 is $1900
35-150 is 2/3 more money than this
Why not just use the APSC 18-105 f4?
Now that this video is a year old would you consider the 20-70mm f4 instead? I hear it is sharper even cropped in to 105mm. Is lack of OSS a huge deal?
I would like to add that I really try to avoid shooting 24mm and 105 at f4 and f22 because of the lack of sharpness in the corners. If I can, I'll shoot something like 26mm at f5, etc.
The light bloom on your talking head shots looks awesome, what filter are you using?
I use the Nisi black allure mist 1/8 panel filter. I'm sure their circular filters would have similar look
I have this lens (24-105) with my Sony a7R3. Very versatile.....
I am still tempted to buy that lens, but started my kit with the Tamron 28-200.
Jason does A7IV with 12-24 F4 G, 24-105 F4 G & 100-400 GM is good for travelers. Also how good is 4k60 with 24-105 on A7IV.
Im about to buy the 7IV so... be honest, This 24-104 or 24-70 GM1 ?
Hey Jason.
Great video thanks. Is this lense compatible with the Sony A7IV focus breathing compensation?
What cage are you rocking? 🔥
I just bought a7 iv, it this lens good for all purposes such landscape photo and telephoto?.
what about sony 18-105, 18-135 or 18-250 and 24-240? or glass is very bad on this?
wow that one the best lence many recommend. he bro can you work through your studio officer set?
which lens is better? 24-70f4 or 24-105f4?
How the stabilization works for IBIS when compared to sigma 24-70 art?
Would you recommend this lens for talking head videos? I ordered the a74 and I Heard- someone say that there is a lens, that makes you look better than in real life… I have good lighting. I just don’t know what lens is good for that. I want to make cinematic looking beauty editorials and reviews…
Suggest me which one i should go with my a7iv this 24-105 f4 or tamron 28-75 g2 ( i am ả hybrid shooter but more into videography )
how about sony 24-105mm F2.8 GMaster romors coming soon ???
I just bought this lens and the Sony A7IV, however it says the autofocus is invalid with this lens. Sony was no help. Any tips??
Hi Jason, thanks for the review. I've also seen quite many people comparing this lens to Tamron 28-200. It seems they are quite close in performance and Tamron offers a longer reach. Just wonder what's your take in this? Have a nice day :)
the only reason I prefer the 24-105 is that added OSS. extra stability can help with walking shots. overall a faster lens would be optimal for many
@@JasonMorrisphotocinema Thanks for your kind reply!
@Jason Morris Is there such a thing like a speed booster for this lens?
Nice, I was looking into a full-frame lens with OSS. Glad to see you made a review for it and you answered all of my questions.
Definitely considering purchasing this lens now. Love how smooth it looked handheld with everything turned on. Great because I love to go on hiking and backing trips with my wife and friends. That extra bit of stabilization would be great for walking and panning shots.
Damnn now I'm considering this too but Waiting on that 35-150 Tammy lens review from you lol
I am struggling so much, I got the 24-70 f/2.8 GM for the same price as the 24-105G OSS so now I have both. But I need to pick one to sell, what would be your advice?
next target, thanks
I love the 35 1.4 gm
Good review!
Absolutely. Stopping down to f5.6 or 6.3 and you'll have pretty much perfect sharpness edge to edge
What mist filter are u using now…is it 1/8 ?
I am using the black allure mist by nisi. Yes, it is a 1/8 strength
Thank you
You're welcome
What Tilta cage are you using?
That's the a7siii cage slightly modified
When will available in india market..???
Should be available this month there i would assume
Hi thanks for the video. Im looking for some advice on a wide angle lens for the a7iv If I'm not mistaken you've suggested the Laowa 9mm apsc? Do you have any videos shot with that setup. I'm mainly interested in real estate video. Thank you
When I've heard "teliphoto" I immediately knew you are Aussie :).
Tampon 28-200 best
Now we need 24-105 f2.8 gm or 28-135 f2.8 gm
Yes please!
I use this lense with my a7iv and its very good for taking pictures but NOT for video, the videos are not that sharp.
Speaking of kit lens, does the A7IV comes with a kit lens....? if yes what lens is it?.... Haven't seen UA-camrs talk about the kit lens for A7IV...🤔
It depends which camera store it's purchased from. I don't think Sony sell it in a box with a lens anymore. This lens is the most common lens sold with sony bodies out of the box
What wrist strap are you using with your camera?
It's a smallrig handle and strap
