Has anyone mentioned that the "Welsh tart", Judith Iscariot was played by Welsh actress Sue Jones-Davies. In later life she went on to become Mayor of Aberystwyth where the film was STILL banned until 2009 when she overturned it after 30 years ! The went on to hold a charity screening and she invited director & Python Terry Jones along - and he asked if he could bring fellow Python Michael Palin along too. Also she was married to one of the two giggling centurions during the Biggus Dickus scene.
It was never officially banned but the theatre owner refused to play it and I think there was also significant societal pressure as well and so it being the only theatre in town it was effectively banned.
The tagline for this movie in Sweden was "The movie that is so funny that it's banned in Norway". It was only banned in Norway (for blasphemy) for a year. It was banned for longer in Ireland and Italy.
This banned in Norway thing was also in the adverts in Denmark 😂 - we would never miss a chance to make fun of our dear Norwegian neighbours and brothers and sisters, who have a language very similar to ours.

The spoken phrase about 'Bernie, I said they'll never make their money back...' was a reference to Bernie Delfont who was originally the financial backer for the movie but pulled out when he heard what the subject matter was as he had a Jewish background. It was none other than ex-Beatle George Harrison who stepped up and remortgaged his house to give the Pythons the money to make the film. When asked why he famously said "....because I wanted to see it." Eric Idle said it was the most anyone has paid for a movie ticket. The production company he formed to do so, Handmade Films' went on to make several classics including 'Nuns on the Run' that you must watch some day.

The Alien scene was essentially just giving Terry Gilliam something to do. By his own admission he's not the best actor - he does play some small roles such as the Jailer who talks gibberish - and they couldn't fit in his animation skills anywhere aside from the opening titles. So when they were writing and couldn't agree how to end the chase with Brian they said "Give it to Gilliam" and the rest is history.

Ha, I love that you quite correctly guessed that there was a problem when Life of Brian came out! There is a fantastic clip you can see here online where John Cleese and Michael Palin face off with a couple of angry bishops and do an outstanding defense of the movie. The movie pokes fun of religion, not Christ himself.....and 90% of the comedy comes from actual historic absuridities (like you get stoned if you speak the word of God/Jehova, for instance......or all the denominations of a religion that makes them fight against themselves, etc). So happy you got to see (and enjoyed) this brilliant satire!
That Roman captain was slightly more lenient than my old Latin teacher. But then again, I'm a classical philologist now, so I guess I can't fault her methods.
The last Montly Python film, "The Meaning of Life" is also a lot of fun. More of a series of sketches. And Python / Animator Terry Gilliam (who's one of the mumbling jailers in this) started directing his own movies around this time. "TIME BANDITS" has a bit of Python energy and has a couple cameos from other Python members... it's also really fun.
Time Bandits, Brazil, and The Adventures of Baron Munchausen--Terry Gilliam's "Imagination" trilogy. All 3 are fantastic, and fantastically weird, movies.
It was difficult for the Python's to get a studio to produce the movie considering the subject matter. Beatle George Harrison funded the project by mortgaging his house after reading the script just so he could see the movie.
React to "Flash Gordon", (1980). It was probably one of those films that hasn't gained popularity yet, but I watched it on TV because it was airing maybe because of it's 35th or 36th year anniversary.
This film poked fun at 1979 British politics. Liberal parties were fighting for purity of ideas while Margaret Thatchers conservative party was consolidating power. It also pokes fun at organized religion using Judeo-Christian teachings.
I love this movie so much. Two of my college professors showed it. My History of Religion teacher showed us the whole thing and pointed out a lot of the subtle and inside humor that made it even funnier. And my Latin teacher showed us the Latin graffiti part. I hope you check out Monty Python's The Meaning of Life at some point. It's in the vignette style like The Holy Grail and takes us through life from birth to death. It's brilliant and hilarious.

Occasionally, it's available in binges and I can't recommend that. For every good skit, there are plenty of so-so's and dull, run-into-the-ground skits. Same with most TV skit comedy shows. Some compilations might be worthy starting points ("And Now For Something Completely Different", for example.)

Also, the fat guy in the restaurant, but I can't remember the name of that bit. So, please watch it when you can and be prepared for an odd but funny adventure.

The man who acted as King Arthur and Brian was Graham Chapman who was a fully qualified doctor. He was gay and died of aids. They made five movies Monty Pythons Quest for the Holy Grail, Monty Pythons The Life of Brian, Monty Pythons The Meaning of Life, Now for Something Completely Different which was a series of comedy sketches from their English TV show. The last was a film of their live performance at the Hollywood Bowl.
I don't think the fact that they didn't have the budget for horses in Holy Grail, resulting in them using coconuts, is to their benefit. In fact, it's kind of disappointing. I would hope that they had the genius to think of that joke without being kind of forced into it by budget constraints.

I can respect Shay not wanting to get into religious matters because they can be so divisive. But I recently found out about academic Bible scholarship and the pushback against “Bible Abuse” by Christian apologists, fundamentalists, and others that misquote, selectively quote, twist, mistranslate, and sometimes outright lie about what is in the Bible, prophecy, and archaeology. They do this to impose their beliefs, dogma, and religious agenda. These Bible scholars tend to be Christian believers themselves. Why else would one spend years studying the Bible, its translations, its multiple sources, its correspondence with historical and archaeological data? Sadly, they get tagged as atheists and anti-religion by the disinformation spreading Christian right, whether they are Christian, atheist, or other. Anyway, I came across a UA-camr named Dan McClellan who does both long form video discussions and shorter (around 5 minutes) debunkings of ludicrous Christian claims. And it’s frikkin’ fascinating. Dan is a scholar, not a theologian. He’s learned the ancient languages, studied the source texts, the source texts’ attributions, and the different social contexts in which the texts were written over hundreds of years. The guy knows his stuff. The point I wanted to sneak up on is that religion is used as a political weapon. This isn’t anything new, but it is quite pertinent to the politics of our day. I sympathize with the thought, “I just want to watch movies and share my reactions. And maybe make a few bucks on the side in exchange for providing entertainment. I don’t care about politics or religion. Or maybe I care, but I want/need a space free of politics to chill out.” I really wish we could just live and let live, free of politics and religious dogma. Unfortunately we’ve reached a point where religion and authoritarian politics is threatening our freedom to have these spaces. The reason I brought up Dan McLellan and the Bible scholars (there is a whole community of them; it’s called “Academia”) is that even if you are a Christian believer, the Fundamentalists whole political agenda is founded on misrepresentations and lies about the Bible. The academic Bible scholars are exposing them. If one is an atheist you probably think of the Bible as a book of lies or fantasy anyway. This doesn’t apply to you. But if you are a Christian, you probably want to check Dan and the others out. They bring the receipts that blows the fundies’ false biblical proof out of the water. That is all.
To be fair, there are plenty of atheists who also take interest in theistic scholarship of all sorts of perspectives. Even as atheists, beliefs we don’t necessarily share can still both passively and actively affect our lives, so it’s good to know more about what we may be arguing with whomever.
The only religion in the movie is how some people excuse their misbehavior as a religion. Unfortunately applicable to current American politics. The third movie is Meaning and Life and a sequence of skits. They also did some live performances which were recorded.

The Beatles' George Harrison put some money into production on this one. It may be my favorite, although The Holy Grail is a more quotable movie.

It was Banned by a bispop who missed the first 5 mins, so he didn't see the real Jesus giving the Sermon on the Mount that specifically shows Brian was NOT Christ or any other actual religious leader.
This mistake was mercilessly mocked! (see Not the 9 O'clock News) where a Bishop is accused of creating Christ as a character to ridicule John Cleese..... For Python sake even his initials are the same! 😂😂😂 How dare you blaspheme and mock Monty Python who's jokes died on stage for us, many times!

I can respect Shay not wanting to get into religious matters because they can be so divisive.
But I recently found out about academic Bible scholarship and the pushback against “Bible Abuse” by Christian apologists, fundamentalists, and others that misquote, selectively quote, twist, mistranslate, and sometimes outright lie about what is in the Bible, prophecy, and archaeology. They do this to impose their beliefs, dogma, and religious agenda.
These Bible scholars tend to be Christian believers themselves. Why else would one spend years studying the Bible, its translations, its multiple sources, its correspondence with historical and archaeological data? Sadly, they get tagged as atheists and anti-religion by the disinformation spreading Christian right, whether they are Christian, atheist, or other.
Anyway, I came across a UA-camr named Dan McClellan who does both long form video discussions and shorter (around 5 minutes) debunkings of ludicrous Christian claims. And it’s frikkin’ fascinating. Dan is a scholar, not a theologian. He’s learned the ancient languages, studied the source texts, the source texts’ attributions, and the different social contexts in which the texts were written over hundreds of years. The guy knows his stuff.
The point I wanted to sneak up on is that religion is used as a political weapon. This isn’t anything new, but it is quite pertinent to the politics of our day.
I sympathize with the thought, “I just want to watch movies and share my reactions. And maybe make a few bucks on the side in exchange for providing entertainment. I don’t care about politics or religion. Or maybe I care, but I want/need a space free of politics to chill out.” I really wish we could just live and let live, free of politics and religious dogma.
Unfortunately we’ve reached a point where religion and authoritarian politics is threatening our freedom to have these spaces. The reason I brought up Dan McLellan and the Bible scholars (there is a whole community of them; it’s called “Academia”) is that even if you are a Christian believer, the Fundamentalists whole political agenda is founded on misrepresentations and lies about the Bible. The academic Bible scholars are exposing them.
If one is an atheist you probably think of the Bible as a book of lies or fantasy anyway. This doesn’t apply to you. But if you are a Christian, you probably want to check Dan and the others out. They bring the receipts that blows the fundies’ false biblical proof out of the water.
That is all.
To be fair, there are plenty of atheists who also take interest in theistic scholarship of all sorts of perspectives. Even as atheists, beliefs we don’t necessarily share can still both passively and actively affect our lives, so it’s good to know more about what we may be arguing with whomever.

The only religion in the movie is how some people excuse their misbehavior as a religion. Unfortunately applicable to current American politics.
The third movie is Meaning and Life and a sequence of skits.

It’s true. Many people were totally outraged that they would dare poke fun at alien beings like that.
