Everyone is talking about how actress playing Mary is the same as in the Crown but ignoring that the actor who plays King Edward is Martin Charteris in The Crown
yes
He got a demotion
😂yes
I thought he looked familiar too!!
Also, if I'm not mistaken, the actor playing the Archbishop Of Canterbury also played him in the first Johnny English movie xD
For a moment there I thought I skipped a season of the crown. That queen Mary gets around.
Me too
Same here
Edward is the private secretary to the Queen in Seasons 3 & 4.
Lol😂😂😂

The oldest cried on his mother shoulder when he became king. So did youngest when he took his place as king. Goes to show you you will always want your mother no matter the age.
It's going to suck for Charles. He's already lost his father. He won't have his mother when the time comes. He won't have anyone. Sure wife can help but she can only do so much. Mothers can't be replaced. Once she's gone, a void that can never be filled.

Description box is wrong. His first son's name was David, who chose Edward as his name as Sovereign. When he abdicated, his little brother Albert became king. Albert chose George as his name as Sovereign.
TheGinnaWinna Actually, his full name was Edward Albert George Patrick David. All the patron saints of the UK, plus Albert (Victoria wanted that name kept alive forever). He was known as David in the family; his brother was know as Bertie.
Katheryne Koelker, not ALL the patron saints of the UK, there is no Andrew.
Dunsapie Correction: Edward Albert George Andrew Patrick David is the full name.
TheGinnaWinna his middle name was David, he was called his middle name rather than his first name edward

Queen Mary turning to Edward after the death was apparently really hard on Edward. Just added to his anger towards her and the job.
Try not be sympathetic to a Nazi sympathiser
The older Martin Charteris is here also
I remember when this was first shown on ITV back in the early 00's. Brilliant made for tv. Especially the final scene. Wherein Churchill places a reef on his grave. With words

the actor who portrays the archbishop of Canterbury is also the archbishop of Canterbury in Johnny English
Jesus is coming! LOOK BUSY!
Looks like the crown kept it "in the family". Queen Mary remained, and King Edward is now Michael, the private secretary of the Queen.
The Queen is dead. Long live the King.
no he was called king Edward viii and then he abicated and then his brother George became king george vi but still Edward married wallis, he became govener of the Bahamas, moved to France and died in 1970 and was buried in Westminster abbey with his wife
What makes you think he's buried in the Abbey? Of course, neither he nor Wallis is.
wholeNwon because I remeber the funeral of his wife which was in 1990
Then you remember where they were BOTH actually buried.
The Prince who became George VI was Prince Albert of York, named after his great grandfather, Princ Albert of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha by Queen Victoria, since he was born on the same day that the elder died. Edward's name was David. It's expected that a regnum name is selected if it's not one of the former regnum names from our history.
wholeNwon there buried in winsdor
Prince Edward did not become King George VI. He was King Edward VIII
King George VI is Her Majesty’s father
So Eileen Atkins played Maria Teck in ANOTHER film?? Wao!!
What show is this one?
what is this even from i need to see it
Bertie also plays in the crown
@mindspring57 Intellectually, neither Edward VIII nor George VI were the brightest of bulbs nor the the sharpest of knives. Mountbatten was marginally clever than both, but he was merely above average. But I'm afraid you engage with the war in the wrong way, (if only discreetly) one could have German heritage, be proud of one's German heritage, maintain a relationship with one's Germans relations and serve the war effort to the fullest. Mountbatten did all those things throughout the war.

I take.it the other young guy in there is or will be George VI?
@1prouddemocrat Oops. My mistake. Obviously, I meant to refer to Edward VII as the one who established "Sandringham Time." Thanks for pointing that out. Edward VII was the grandson of Queen Victoria. Edward VI, on the other hand, was the son of King Henry VIII. Maybe it is my own version of "Sandringham Time"? By inadvertently referring to Edward VI, I turned the clock back nearly four centuries!
???????????
Prince Edward became king Edward VIII not George VI.
Edward became King Edward VIII, not George VI
He was never king, he never had the coronation
@@recklesslntent you don't have to have the coronation ceremony to be King/Queen to officially be King/Queen per British law. There has been plenty of legal precedents on that over the years.
What is required to ascend the throne if one is the Heir Apparent/Heiress Presumptive is
One: The current monarch takes his or her last breath and officially pronounced dead by the Royal Physician or any competent licensed physician if he's not around. The Heir Apparent/Heiress Presumptive at that moment or once officially notified of the now previous monarch's death, is now the King/Queen as was the case of the then-Princess Elizabeth she wasn't anywhere near her father at the time of his death. I think they found where she was and either called her, sent a telegram or both. The moment then- Princess Elizabeth was notified of her father's death, she became Queen Elizabeth II.
The Heir Apparent/Heiress Presumptive is usually present in the current monarch's final moments.
Two: the current monarch abdicates and Parliament passes a law making the abdication official. At that moment, the Heir Apparent/Heiress Presumptive becomes King/Queen as was the case for Edward VIII abdicating and his brother, who became George VI the moment Edward VIII abdicated
Michael Gregson? HaHa! I like seeing the same British actors in different roles. It shows that the English film industry really tries to do right by their talent. Or they have a strong union.
I've sometimes wondered if they just didn't have very many actors because I see the same ones over and over again. I'm not complaining at all but I have wondered that.

I love how she pushes him away from her the moment King George dies - he's no longer her son crying in her arms but the King and must support himself.
Agreed. It was as powerful as the scene in "The Crown" when Queen Mary knelt before her granddaughter Queen Elizabeth after her son (George VI) passed away and she arrived back in the UK from her African trip.
Eileen Atkins was excellent playing Queen Mary both in this series and in "The Crown."
I don't think she was saying he must support himself, she was indicating that she was now his subject and he was her sovereign as indicated by the bow of the head. I am surprised that the Dr didn't say 'The King is dead, long live the King' indicating that monarchy goes on.
@@chrisw6704 that kind of did happen. The doctor did say "The King is dead". Queen Mary finished the other part.

True to George V’s prediction, Edward ruined himself within a year of his father’s death. Thankfully, his abdication cleared the way for George VI - a good man and a great king, who fearlessly led his people through the most destructive conflict in human history - and, ultimately, Elizabeth II, the remarkable lady whose devotion to her duty has proven her a great queen and a British institution all unto herself. God save Her Gracious Majesty!
You're too kind ☺
King George V always knew Bertie would be the great one of the bunch, shame the monarchy system is basically a lottery
To be clear, Edward's abdication didn't clear the way for Elizabeth, who would have inherited the Crown upon her uncle's death, since he died childless and her father predeceased her. It almost certainly would have been better for Elizabeth and her family as people, although almost certainly worse for the UK and the Commonwealth to have had Edward through the second world war and into the early 70s.

@trixwiz7 According to George VI's biographer, Sarah Bradford, both Edward VIII and George VI were victims of the martinet upbringing imposed on them by their father, George V. Edward, the extrovert, rebelled by acting contrary to his father's wishes, while "Bertie" (as George VI was known growing up) withdrew into himself. Given the limitations to which a constitutional monarchy is subject, George VI had the better personality for the job. His wife was a great help in the PR department too.
Edward did not become George VI upon his accession. He retained his name and became King Edward VIII, and when he abdicated, his brother Prince Albert became King George VI, and when King George VI died, his daughter Elizabeth became Queen Elizabeth II, and when she passed away, her son retained his name and thus became King Charles III.
Thanks God Edward VIII's reign was so brief. He would have been a dreadful king, especially during the war. George VI turned out to be a wonderful king and a true hero.
Dreadful king? Why?
@@massimilianomencacci2510 Because he was a self absorbed Nazi sympathizer with no sense of duty. Bertie was a far better king, largely because of his wife. Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon was the strength behind the throne. That emasculating harpy Wallace Simpson was a vapid social climber.

I LOVE the portrayal of the conflict between Albert and Edward vs. Archbishop Lang right off the bat.
For all of Edward's faults, and we all know what they were, Lang was the worst sort of cleric. Judgemental, hypocritical, and tyrannical... although there is little evidence that he was actually corrupt. Lang was a vicious opponent of any object or any idea developed after 1910, and he orchestrated Edward VIII's downfall with the political skill of Martin Bormann. As an American, I see the exact same type of conduct in televangelists and Baptist celebrity preachers all the time and am continually disgusted with it.

These days, there are many false prophets, and many wolves among the fold. We were warned it would be this way. Just remember you don't need them to know God.

@@smc1942 There certainly are many wolves in the fold. The problem is that all too many of them are from evangelical charismatic fundamentalist churches and not nearly enough of those guys get called on their bullshit.
I myself am Episcopalian, a faith that I am content with. I appreciate the ritual and liturgy. I joke about it somewhat, calling it "Diet Catholic, all the ritual but half the guilt!", but there's something in the Book of Common Prayer that appeals to me.
And there is **nothing** that appeals to me about some 'faith-healing' con artist in a Dior suit and Rolex saying that the congregation needs to donate so he can buy a private jet. When Orel Roberts tried that crap in his 'Donate a million dollars or God is going to call me home' stunt, I sent him a Canadian dime and a 'Bon Voyage' card.

Agreed. But be careful about painting with a broad brush. Look at the scandals in the catholic church, but we know not all priests are bad.
I, too, despise those like Oral Roberts. I remember that stunt like it was yesterday! He has some 'splainin' to do when he stands before God! He's not the only one.
I saw such corruption first hand in the church I attended as a youth. My Uncles led it!!! They are the very people I speak of when I mention wolves in the fold.
I've been a nondenominational Christian ever since. I read the word several times a week. I pray daily, often several times a day. And I know I'm far from perfect. So I try not to be too harsh with others. It is difficult not to call out certain people at times... But I remember Romans 12;19 and leave them to God.
I try instead to focus on my relationship with God, and being a better man than I was yesterday. As I said, I'm far from perfect! But I'm not the wolves my Uncles remain to this day. Their time grows short, but they have yet to change their ways. Such are Narcissist. It is because of them I left that church. I tried several others, but found the same again and again. Hence, I became what I am today.
I help people when I'm able. Especially the homeless and hungry. I support St. Judes Children's Hospital. Small things all, but every little bit helps.
Oh, and I sent Roberts a goose egg... 0!
His last words were 'God damn you,' as he was euthanized by his doctor, Lord Dawson, with an overdose of pain killers. He was dying anyway, but the Prince of Wales wanted his death to be reported in the Times, not the Evening Standard. I suppose George V was a victim of regicide.
I wouldn't call it Regicide as he wasn't expected to survive the night, 72 hours tops. He was well on his way out and nothing was going to stop it. All Dawson did was accelerate the process. If he did nothing, he'd most likely would have died that night anyway or two more days on the outside.
Quite a promotion my man got! From the Queen’s prívate secretary to King himself haha

I know this is 13 yrs old, but Prince Edward became Edward VIII, not George VI.
They say lightning never strikes twice in the same place. King Edward VII's last mistress was the Hon. Mrs. George Keppel. Charles is a great-great grandson of Edward VII, and Camila Parker-Bowles is a great granddaughter of one Mrs. George Keppel!
alwellus Edward VIII had several mistresses all married..... The only one he married was Wallis Simpson.

@mindspring57 and now that Prince William is to marry Catherine (Kate) the Royal line will be solidly English with a nice Scottish twist threw his Grandmother and Great Grandmother (The Queen Mother being pure Scot). The German family line is pretty much weeded out with this up coming marriage.
I don't think the German part will ever completely go away so long as any of George V's direct descendants, including the current Queen are still around. It will be thinned out with each generation but will always be there.
Correction in the Description, Edward VIII became King, then abdicated, leading the way for George VI to take the throne

Queen Mary embracing Martin Charteris as the new King. JK.
@mc0558 I agree about George V, George VI, and Queen Mary. Someone, during the First World War, wrote that King George V presided over "an alien and uninspiring court." George V, on learning this, said, "I may be uninspiring, but I'm damned if I'm an alien."
He did have the good sense (or at least the good advice) to change the family name to Windsor in 1917.
Kaiser Wilhelm's response was to say that, in future, he looked forward to attending "The Merry Wives of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha."
It was HG Wells who said that "alien and uninspiring court" quote.
What's this taken from?
Bertie and Elizabeth 😊
Queen Mary = Queen Mary in The Crown
Archbishop of Canterbury = Archbishop of Canterbury in Johnny English
That's not Bertie breaking down. That's David, who later abdicated to marry Wallis Simpson.

Oliver Ford Davies playing the Archbishop of Lang. Also played the Archbishop of Canterbury in Johnny English
Is that Gregson???
"In this scene King George dies making his first son prince edward King George VI....". This is not correct. Upon the death of George V his eldest son, known as David, became king Edward VIII, he abdicated 11 months later and was succeeded by his brother, the second born Albert (Bertie), who reigned as king George VI.
@mindspring57 E VIII wasn't dutiful, that alone makes G better, but apparently he was conscious of the poor. Lots of people also criticise George V for the way he raised his children. It's reasonably well directed criticism as you point out exemplified by Bertie and David. But to be fair I think he wasn't so different to any Victorian father, and so he can't take too much blame in that regard. Have you seen the Lost Prince (about Prince Johnnie), it's very good, I think, but terribly sad too.
The actress who plays queen Mary has something classy and noble about her which makes her perfect for roles of royals
Eileen Atkins. She was also one of the co-creators of Upstairs Downstairs.
@mindspring57 Yeah I think that sums up E VIII, he apparently also told a friend he didn't think Hitler was such bad chap. But this visiting Germany business was done more extensively than you'd think, Lloyd George went and met Hitler, so did Lord Halifax, both Britons, having visited Hitler doesn't amount to sympathising with Nazism (although E did). Accepting almost none of the Windsors were intellectually strong, G's a much better King than E, duty wise, but I think E got a raw deal still
Queen Mary is Queen Mary, Martin Charteris was Edward VIII😅, before taking an anti aging pill and some kind of hypnosis towards the royal family, ends up being his niece's private secretary 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Eileen Atkins was amazing as Queen Mary in this, and The Crown..also very good, back in the day, was Dame Peggy Ashcroft as QM in 1978's "Edward and Mrs. Simpson", Thames TV miniseries.
Fun fact: the Archbishop of Canterbury here is the same actor who plays the Archbishop of Canterbury in Johnny English
Isn’t that the queens private secretary from the crown
And this series Queen Mary also played Queen Mary in "The Crown"
@am1966ath The fact that Edward VIII had an attraction for married women (e.g. Thelma Furness) speaks volumes about his character. I agree, Wallis was hated in her day, probably more so than Camilla. Wallis was perceived to have placed the institution of the monarchy in jeopardy by causing the abdication of the King.
@mindsoring57 Edward VIII was turfed out because he was spineless and he adored the Germans. No surprises there considering he too was German; Victoria, Albert, Edward VII, Alexandra, George V, Mary ALL GERMANS. Edward VII spent a lot of time in Germany (as did most aristocrats). He was quite taken with the Germans, and most of his relatives over there were Nazis. Unfortunately, he was spineless and Parliament knew he couldn't be trusted to be King during the war. He was seeing Wallis, at the same time she was seeing some SS officer. Parliament allowed him to marry her, and then they used the marriage to turf him off the throne. He had to pretend he abdicated because he was madly in love with Walis. He may have been in love with her, but Wallus was not in love with him, she just wanted all the perks that came with being the King's mistress. They must have had some serious dirt on her, to get her to agree to marry him. The rest of the royal family went along with the charade, because to have protested would have brought about the end of the Monarchy, cause Parliament was not playing.
Edward entered a pact with Hitler. Had Hitler managed to take over Europe, the plan was to reinstall Edward on the throne. Luckily Hitler failed.
Wallus was blamed for many things, but truth is, there were bigger power struggles going on behind the scenes. She was just a convenient scape goat.
Is the actor playing Bertie the guy on Downton Abbey Season 3 and 4, Michael Gregson(?) ?
He is playing David, King Edward VIII not Bertie
@@pedanticradiator1491 ok. Thanks.
@trixwiz7 Oh certainly. In the United States, songs like "Silent Night" and Beethoven's "Ode to Joy" were still sung during the war, despite their Germanic origins. Edward VIII's problem, aside from being terminally vain and stupid, was that actually visited Germany, gave the Hitler salute, and, in general, acted in a manner that even the Germans thought was a bit ridiculous. Mountbatten was very clever, managing to get Phillip married to the heiress presumptive!

The rest of the royal family (George V, George VI, Mountbatten, etc.) went into survival mode, and had the good sense to set aside their German origins, and, when necessary, to discard their German relatives.
@trixwiz7 Don't forget, after Neville Chamberlain signed the Munich Agreement in 1938, King George VI and Queen Elizabeth stood with him on the balcony of Buckingham Palace, so that he could receive cheers of the assembled throng. Appeasement was popular in Britain. Many considered it silly to risk war with Germany over the Czechs. It was not until March 1939, when Hitler overran the rest of the country, that Chamberlain woke up. I still think England was better without Edward VIII though.
