I made the same 4 workbenches using his idea, but used 5/8" particle board for the tops and put hinges on them so I can open them up. I then screwed 1/4" luan underlayment to the under side of the top so I now have a 3-1/2" deep storage area for drills, jig saws, router bits, sandpaper, parts bin, glue, brushes, squares, etc. I even created dividers so that everything has it's place. Finally, I put a French Cleat on the end of one of the workbenches and made a stand for my tables saw so I can mount it to the end and use the top of the bench as an outfeed table. I also built a router table and use the same cleat end. Now I'm ready to start building stuff!
Those are all great ideas! I’m definitely going to be adding some French Cleats. I’m going to use one bench for my air compressor and portable shop vac. Thanks
Nice work, making me a couple this weekend to replace a permanent work bench that’s a catch all. Going to add a middle shelf for storage for more crap to be added! 🤓
I built three of these last Fall (2022) and I may make one or two more. It's a great design. The only issue I've had, which may not be covered in the instructions is the caster wheels placement. If the caster wheels are too close to the edges, such as right in the corners where people tend to naturally place them, when the benches are connected and you want to move them all as a single unit - some of the wheels bump into each other and won't swivel freely. Since they cant swivel freely it makes moving the table around hard. It's an easy fix, just move them in a couple inches, but it is something easily overlooked.
Good point. May be a good idea to put all the carts upside down in a connected fashion then attach the casters. This way you can see if you have any placement issues.
I made 2 of these and have the materials for a 3rd. Added an extra shelf in the middle for each, varying heights for some storage bins I had and used the pre-drilled holes on the side of one to made a simple wood vise with the 2x4 scrap and a little bit of extra hardware.
This is a pretty solid little workbench. While once you figure out how it comes together, it is physically Easy to assemble ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxyFZUPFEey-PuqsPMxqaykBhgA1LWxFHh by yourself. But the diagrams explaining the steps are really pretty bad. I could not get the handle pins in all the way despite multiple attempts, so I just used a screw I had on hand for the 2nd handle. I could not get the first pin in further or pull it back out. You are supposed to hammer it in, but I had no leverage and the handle is plastic and I did not want to risk breaking it. I will get a lot of use out of the bench because of the convenient size and height. It does fold up nicely for storage. They even explain how to fold it so you don't get pinched...that is important!
They are for attaching the benches together in multiple configurations. I will try and represent this more when I post some modifications in UA-cam Shorts.
He must have his reasons and I like this actually. Instead of a 30 minute video of someone going on and on, he just puts them together. I enjoy channels like Ishitani Furniture and others because of the no-talking. Just someone going about it and making something. Besides, this was not a complicated build, so what’s the point of talking?
You’re correct, in your jest. I’ve heard the same from family and friends. I am currently experimenting with format but do plan on future videos with voice over. Thank you…
Thanks for your comment. I do plan on more complicated work with voice over and/or descriptors. Also, to be mentioned in the same paragraph as Ishitani is a scary thought to me. He so much superior to anything I can produce. At least for now. lol. Thanks again…

"A Ben Tardif Design". I'm puzzled. Obviously this Ben Tardif is so famous that you just have to mention his name and everyone knows the result will be fantastic. But these workbenches look pretty average to me. (1) make them square so that they can be joined either way round, because you're going to customise them with a table saw, router, drill press etc. (2) put the legs on the edge so you can clamp boards to them (Stumpy Nubs explains this) and (3) provide a way to lock them together. As it stands, this "design" is just a set of dimensions, no more than that, it seems to me.
Wow! That is a lot to unpack. Those are all very good ideas for workbenches and I appreciate the feedback. I know that these benches come off average and simple to the experienced woodworker, however I had a great time making them and they are exactly what I need for some upcoming projects. I also find Ben Tardif’s channel and projects way above average as well as inspiring. But, I know not everyone can be for everyone. I really do appreciate your feedback. Thanks…. P.S. Stumpy rules!!!
Square might be a good idea for you, but it is a "stupid" idea to someone else. If you have limited floor-space, you sacrifice being square for being rectangular. Don't always assume you have everything figured out. If you payed attention there is a locking mechanism built into these as well. What is any woodworking project other than a set of dimensions with features added on?
I plan on building a few for my garage, but I’m going to modify with 4x4 legs and a system of retractable casters so the benches are sitting on the floor and super stable. But this idea and caster system such as the one by walnut workshop will generally inform my design. See this for the caster system ua-cam.com/video/ei3ADzfbxBE/v-deo.htmlsi=VYdTJu3XJiIh6g7J There’s also a channel by a gentleman called Carl Holmgren which has multiple amazing retractable caster systems. I highly recommend seeking him out.
I like the idea. I go from small builds to big ones and being versatile like that would be a plus. I will keep this in mind when I redo my benches.

They really are a good universal bench and not for a lot of cost. Have fun…

The build? Awesome. The wobbly drill press? A bit terrifying.
Yeah. I have the drill press on the priority list. Thanks for your comment and watching.
Did a similar build but attached toggle clamps for ease of linking and unlinking the units instead of nuts and bolts.
Toggle clamps are a great idea! Now I’m going to have to go buy some and try this idea. Thanks

what were the bolts/holes for

Music explains procedures sooo much better than words.

Church and UA-cam would both be better without music. IMO

Quais as medidas dessa bancada?

Looks like Ben's idea
I THINK AT THIS POINT I WILL WORRY ABOUT THAT PRESS TO BE ANCHORED SOLID TO THE GROUND....IT BODERS ME SEE IT WOBLE....
You are right. I knew it was moving when I was using but it looks so much worse on camera. I’ve put securing the drill press on my to do list. Thanks

So if I decide to build one of these for my garage, do I need to pay Ben Tardif some royalties?? 🤣

I’m not sure if you have to reach out to someone to use their project but I did get Ben’s permission. I just thought it was good etiquette.
