Hope everyone who has chosen to mock Ebert for how he looked after battling cancer feel really great about themselves. He dealt with his condition with grace, dignity, and an incredible amount of bravery that they can only dream of. ...Seriously, earthworms could claim more compassion.
we should all find a love like Chaz. These two were truly in love and soul mates. Roger was an extremely courageous man and this story is so inspirational. Don't give up in face of adversity and serious health issues. I'm sure his wife is 50% of his courage. R.i.p Roger. Thanks for your reviews and lovely memories.
Such a powerful expression of human language. Sometimes we forget how cruel life can be. And there are those who rise above it. Roger Ebert, I salute you!
The strength showed by this man during his illness is astounding. Much respect to you, Mr. Ebert! If I ever had to walk a similar path in life I hope to have your courage and your will to not give up. My admiration goes also to his wife, incredibly strong woman!
This deserves more views. A lot of bile in many comments...which is a pity. I was personally struck by Ebert's sense of humor and grace in coping with his loss of human speech, which would be a great blow to anyone, as well as the supportive relationship he and his wife seem to share. Thumbs up from me.

What a great testament to the human spirit. It is truly moving to see Roger Ebert’s determination to continue doing what he loves, and the way his loved ones, especially his wife, have rallied around him. Beautiful.
I'm so sad about the lost the world reported. I wish all relatives, friends and fans all the best and greetings from Germany. God Bless you guys and rest in peace Mr. Ebert
Chaz Ebert is a very special person. Roger Ebert is lucky to have such a strong support system, and I wish him many, many more years of writing and laughter.
I am SO glad to have seen this. Back when I actually watched television, Roger Ebert was the only movie critic I actually cared to listen to. Everyone else it seemed reviewed based on their own personal tastes. Roger would review a movie based on it's audience, it's genre. I have often wondered what became of him. I am moved to tears to see that his journey has continued, an adventure worthy of the character of the heroes in his beloved movies. Maybe I'll read him instead now.
i do like that he gesticulated with his hands a lot more to make up for his lack of a voice. i do also like the sense of humor he had about some of his most gruesome anecdotes
Mr and Mrs Ebert should be an inspiration to everyone, abled, differently abled, and disabled. This evolution of communication is not a static thing, and who knows what the future holds? I'm all for any technology that enables human beings to connect and communicate effectively. I'll never take my voice nor the resilliance of the human spirit for granted again. Thank You for your courage and grace in sharing your journey, Mr. Ebert.
I always liked Roger. He was maybe the more "prickish" of the two when it came to Siskel and Ebert, but he was a little more real. Kinda like he was more likely to tell you like it really is. Truth is they were both fantastic, and kept millions of people entertained by giving their opinion on entertainment.
The only film reviews I ever read are those by Ebert. I wish you and your family the best, and look forward to continuing to turn to your opinions, when ever I am watching a film (I often read your opinions post-viewing, just to see what you thought). Roger, thanks for all your work over the years and all the best!! Even if you can no longer speak, your voice will continue - keep writing! thanks... ~T

I have enjoyed Roger Ebert since I first saw "Siskel and Ebert at the Movies" too many years ago to count. To see and "hear" him now tells me that he remains as vital and dynamic as ever, the lack of a natural voice notwithstanding. I salute you, Roger. Two Thumbs WAY UP!
while difficult to watch at first this grows to be a very inspirational video about science, technology, humanity and heart. I have a feeling that old Rogde might someday be the subject of a bio pic. I hope he gets to review it :)
É admirável como ele se reinventou. Algumas pessoas desistem de si mesmas quando se deparam com um problema dessa dimensão. Terei que retirar um nódulo da minha tireóide, fico com muito medo de afetar minha voz, sou um ser humano muito fraco.
@zrhealey I think Ebert was drawing a line between a game, and art. A game can contain art, but it isn't art itself. At the end of the day, the bare-bone mechanics of Bioshock aren't any different from Doom, quake, or any other FPS. It could be firing white dots at black dots, and as far as the game goes, it is the same. It is the art of the game that makes it worth playing. The characters, the plot devices, the stunning settings. The game as a whole may not be art, but art is still inside :)
Brings up a good point about synthesized voice. I would have thought that they'd use existing spoken words to inform a filter to re-create the same, or nearly the same, voice. Given a few thousand words, the sounds created by the speaker would be available to characterization I would think, considering computers can learn how to recognize words once it learns an individual voice.
This was very inspiring. Very touching. TED is a great organization. I am glad that Roger Ebert has been able to help advance a technology that will be useful to many people in the future!
I understand that some people are mad. VERY mad that Ebert tweeted something that was a bit too soon after Dunn's death. Guys, understand this, he apologized publicly to everyone saying that what he tweeted was too soon. Yet some people still get butt hurt over the fact that he tweeted that IGNORING his apology. This is inexcusable. If you made fun of 9/11 or the Holocaust as a joke or you realized your mistake but the others won't forgive you and constantly torture you about it, would you feel good? You know it's a mistake, you apologized for it, and yet people still make fun of you. Thank God that Ebert at least was smart enough to not be hurt by the vile viciousness of you people. @smoothbanana the reason we'd want to live forever is because in case you havent noticed but we humans do what we want. we're designed to bring ourselves happiness whether it's from learning truths like from ted talks or from competing with others (sports teams) e.t.c. no matter what life is good if you make it good. your environment's constantly evolving because of humans need to adapt from diminishing returns. the internet/video games only just happened don't you want to see more?

@MarkArandjus Hawkings has said that while there are many better voices out there now he feels that his oldschool voice has become recognizable as his own. For that reason he hasn't upgraded.
I can see a variety of hateful comments regarding Ebert and they are truly distasteful. It doesn't benefit anyone to make fun of him. What if you were in his position? Yes, he made a mistake, but he apologized for it. Does that mean we still should hate him forever because he did something bad that even he acknowledged was wrong? If it was done in the reverse that doesn't make it right. Even after the surgeries Ebert was still optimistic and happy. He didn't get depressed permanently, in fact this video is proof he had a lot of fun (the "Phantom of the Opera" joke), so I find it disgusting that some people relished in the position he was put in even though he had no worries.
Very touching and funny. Loved the little jokes. One error though: the show at the time was called Ebert and Roeper, not Ebert and Roper at the Movies.
To all the folks upset about the comments about Ebert's appearance: Those comments are almost entirely from a single conversation from 10 years ago. Perhaps in YT's early days, they didn't have a comment "reply" option under each comment.
