    A couple weeks ago I saw a friend of mine playing an N64 looking platformer with nice animation. He told me it was called Pseudorgalia and that I'd probably like it, being a big Metroidvania fan. So I went ahead and bought it, installed it, and went to bed since I had work in the morning. The next day, internet and cell service was out for my entire town for 24 hours and I couldn't do any work, so I decided to give that game a shot.
    Boy am I glad I got to play it in that environment. Having no internet to look up maps or hints, it felt like being a kid again. It was just me and a dream-like virtual world to get lost in. Played through the whole game, accidentally skipping most of the major upgrades until the very end (I got the Keep key without wall run, and entirely missed ground pound). I adore this game, and is easily my favorite so far this year, which is saying a lot in a year with as many good releases as this one.

      I had a similar experience, I got the game on release day and no one had made any maps or guides for it yet! Only took the community a few days to make some great maps but that sense of mystery was so much fun

    One of the great things about indie metroidvanias is that, if you ever get bored of the vanilla layout, they support randomizers. There is a randomizer for Pseudoregalia, and they’re also working on adding it to Archipelago so you can play it in multiworlds with your friends (basically a randomizer seed that shuffles items among multiple games).

      Wow I didn't know you could get through it with that few abilities. I assume you only need slide and wall jump?

    • @ToastUrbath

      @@HyveMindsGames Slide and Cling. I just started speedrunning the game and yea, no wall jumps required because Cling is busted. Not nearly and busted as Slide hops and flips, though. The main reason you even get Cling is for clipping and climbing the Tower but I wouldn’t be surprised if you could somehow beat the game without Cling. The only major hiccups I can see are getting the Key in Belly and getting the top of Tower. If you could find a way past those without Cling then we could beat the game with only Slide

    • @kirauriel
      @kirauriel 9 місяців тому +1

      @@ToastUrbath you can absolutely beat the game without cling, but it requires quite a bit otherwise. a big part of it is the right-side theatre switch (for the main key). getting across that gap requires slide, 4 wall kicks, and a backflip! you *barely* get enough distance, but it's possible (there's a video on youtube of the strategy i think). i just went through and 100%'d the game without cling (so i guess 99% haha) for my second playthrough and it's absolutely possible. for my first playthrough i missed cling and go around pretty well so i was curious too, and it was a fun challenge.

  • @Furufoo

    This game was crazy, I unfortunately missed the ground pound/high jump ability early on which left me wandering around for about an hour with very little movement options to keep me entertained, but I *still* couldn't drop the game. The sound design, the music, that feeling you mentioned of being truly lost and finding a crazy new area at every turn while wondering "Am I even supposed to be here?" it all made the game so entertaining. I played it while on call with a few friends over discord and it was just a true gem to experience.
    And like, even having become lost, even having *wished for a map* a lot during my playthrough, by the time I was done I couldn't agree more with your take that a map would do this game a disservice.
    Also Sybil's design is just, out of this world, it's so damn good I love her and I love that the only accessibility option in the game is "Give Sybil pants"

    • @aehfoibyr2931
      @aehfoibyr2931 6 місяців тому

      There's no such thing as a map doing a video game a "disservice" if you can get lost in said game. I have given up on games because I don't know where to go, my time is important to me.

      @@aehfoibyr2931That's fair! It's not for everyone, but I think different games can have different visions, and different people can have different take on what that vision should and shouldn't be. I really appreciate this review, and I basically had the same feelings walking away from the game.
    Obviously, I think the most controversial take on this game is the map and general lost nature of traversal, though I do fully agree with you and defend the choice as artistic.
    I didn't even grow up necessarily with games without maps, I only started gaming in the later half of the 2000s, when maps and some internet were rather accessible. Having a game strip that away from me was a unique experience, and it felt kind of nice.
    I had never had a game before where I WASN'T frustrated from a lack of information or clarity on where I am, but the vibe of this game perfectly matches this choice.

    After seeing both you and Iron Pineapple cover this game, I might just have to buy it. I love the vibe it gives of, and that early 3D-style really hitamet right in the nostalgia. The N64 was my first console and metroidvania might be my favourite genre, so this is right up my alley.

    I just played this thanks to you, it's amazing, I love how open it is and I feel like the path I took was totally unique to me. During my entire playtime I was finding so many different ways to utalize my current move set to get to ledges that are otherwise out of reach... for example: I got the extra air kick upgrade way before I got the air kick and I managed to cheese so many platforming sequences with just high jumps and air kicks and the backflip. Another example: I managed to get the dark orb attack in the complete reverse order. Truly one of the best platformers I've played. I can't believe people made such a great game back in the N64 era and that I'm hearing about it only now

    I’ve played the game both pre and post map on a seperate save file each, file 1 (pre map) took 6.2 hours to full completion and file 2 (post map) took 5.4 hours to full completion, alongside the new content like time trials, overall i think the map is useful but honestly the game isnt terrible without it, it was actually pretty fun having to memorize spaces via layout or enemy placement, however during the map playthrough i found traversal being much less of a chore. It was made in a very short amount of time and is very cheap on Steam. Your observations are somewhat accurate. It can be boring if you are lost, which happens often. Most of the areas are pretty empty, but the fun in the game is the 3D platforming and exploration, using your few abilities to get to places you shouldn't be able to, or, rather, it feels like you shouldn't be able to. I still am glad I played it, but if this is what stuck out to you, you might not want to bother.

    It’s cool to see a metroidvania that focuses heavily on movement mechanics. Most games in the genre tend to prioritize either combat or puzzle solving, at least from the ones I’ve played. The only other game I can think of that has mobility as its primary gameplay system is Ori and the Blind Forest, and that game was a massive disappointment for me as a metroidvania, as it completely disregarded the exploration aspect of the genre in favor of a linear storyline.
    It’s also cool to see another 3D metroidvania, as well. As far as untapped or underutilized styles of games go, the one I want to see more of is this kind of game. I get it, designing an interconnected world is just far easier to do in 2D space versus 3D space, but I feel like we’re at a point in video games where developers can absolutely do it. I really wish to see a new “breakthrough title”, in this regard - a Metroid Prime of the modern times, which fully realizes the potential of 3D interconnected world design.
    Anyway, I’m interested in trying out Pseudoregalia sometime. I saw this game pop up in my Steam recommendations section a few weeks ago, and thought it looked mildly interesting, but after watching several videos of its gameplay it’s become a lot more intriguing to me, now.

    I haven't played the game yet, but something that I immediately notice that would most likely aid in map memorization would be the removal of the dark clouds in front of every doorway. Think of a game like Dark Souls: Similar to Pseudoregalia, the map is not huge, but certainly isn't small either. In Dark Souls, however, with a few exceptions, you can always look behind you to see the interior of the room you came from, and look ahead of you to see what's in the room you're heading towards, ensuring you almost never get lost, despite the lack of a map.

    You know those green orbs? Well one of them gives you an extra wall kick. So technically, the max is four, but you start out with three.

    there's also a hidden mechanic that ive seen others call "gliding" but its essentially bunny hopping
    after sliding, or sliding and jumping, you can bunny hop to keep the momentum
    it has an animation and effect to go along with it, too!

    Been recently getting into Indie games and this is the first one i bought.
    I had never played a platformer before because they all looked frustrating but Pseudoregalia was one of the most calming experiences i had in gaming.
    I think the only thing it's missing are achievements.

    I hope more games like this get made. This is so refreshing. Games that embrace previous game generation design. None of this new hyper realistic game design. It's refreshing to see games that are clearly video games in the best way possible

    It's nowhere close to the "greatest indie metroidvania of all time." Hollow Knight is an indie metroidvania, and that game is a solid 9/10, and also better than Pseudoregalia. It's a pretty good 3D platformer. I'd give it an 8.5/10 if we are considering its very low price of about 5 dollars on steam, and 7.5/10 if we aren't considering that or the short time in which it was made. The game is good but does have some serious issues that prevent it from being a 10/10. The combat is practically non-existent, with only a few areas that have real enemies, and only a few boss fights. The combat and enemy verity should have been expanded a lot before or after retail release. It's a shame, because they combat does feel good when you are fighting an actual boss. There's also an issue with direction / pacing. This will be very dependent on 1) how good you are with remembering where you are and 2) your luck in finding the right place to go quickly. If you have bad luck, you'll be spending upwards of most of the time just going around places you've been trying to find a hidden key or the right path. Still a great game, but it can be frustrating and unrewarding at times, and that can make it not worth your time if you don't enjoy the rest of the game.

      So yeah i recomend playing.

    I would say this game would benefit from a unlockable map. you are right, a map would trivialize the game right away, IF we had easy access to it. but a series of collectibles in each sectional of the gameworld that when fully collected unlocks a map for that area would not only add more collectibles to grab, but ones that would be very beneficial and worth hunting. and it would impact the games difficulty less since it would require you to get lost a bunch just to unlock a small section of the map. but the end goal reward is the ability to backtrack much faster and more accurately.
    Let me be more specific though, this would be a very limited linemap. i HATE over detailed 3d maps in games these days, it just... takes away the sense of scale from it all, dooms line maps inspired going to see what it looked like in person and seeing if there was any secrets, doom has in my opinion, the best form of maps in games.
