One thing you should have said and done is make sure that metal jumper doesn't touch other metal under hood. You could blow the fuse or worse.

It took most of the can before the compressor stopped shutting off. I knew so.ething was working when it stayed on. Still low side of green area but air is much cooler now.

My compressor has some sort of internal clutch so it spins all the time. The low side gauge from a setup like you have reads high. The AC works but only after the car has been running awhile but seems to cycle between blowing cold and not cold (cool and warmish). I probably need to get a set of gauges so I can get a reading on the high side as well. I think it could be either the expansion valve or the AC compressor control valve. Thoughts?

Im guessing there's a reason behind not being able to fill it up without jumping it. I dont think jumping it is the right solution, you just made it work. But It looks like there's a right way of doing it without having to go find a wire and "tricking" the system, Im sure it works tho is just the "try it out and see what happens" method

Target ac pressures depend on ambient temperature and altitude. You need to Google a r134a ac pressure chart.

No vacuum needed to evacuate old?

No because the system isn't empty, it's just low.

Compressors wont cycle when its low on coolant as a safety device to keep it from burning up.. Putting that shunt in the connector bypasses the switch lets you know the clutch is operational..nothing else..
