I visited Turkmenistan not too long ago (2013). I didnt really see any opression of anyone, but then again rumor has it all the opposition has already been dealt with.
The standout parts to me (outside of Darvaza) are the gorgeous marble buildings in their capital's downtown that are clearly empty, being built just for their beauty (or for the president). Their National museum was 1/3 dedicated to the president, with photoshopped pictures of him actually interacting with his people and doing various things like winning nascar-style races, riding horses, or playing sports. Poorly photoshopped photos, mind you.
    Crazy place to visit.

Especially tourists aren't allowed to be in places, in which they don't want them to be. Yeah i agree on part with museum. I remember the day when we went with our school to museum, i was (12y.o.?) and i actually remember that whole point of exisiting it was just to show how president poses. The statue no longer rotates."In essence he had the arch dismantled and (quasi) re-built(same height) outside the town with a slight different name.I have seen pictures, the appearances are just facially different to what is yet visible in this documentary.

There is an Ataturk corner(where you hang stuff about his life etc) in every school and it doesn't matter if it's a private school because they made it mandatory by law, there is ataturk bust inside and outside of every school, a portrait of his in every classroom and in every official building and office. his face is on every bill and coin. Many places, bridges, airports etc. were named after him and so on. There is a huge story here and Turkish people can't cover it as there is a law which can cause serious trouble for anyone criticizing Ataturk or these topics.

If he was paranoid, it's likely he didn't have much happiness with all his wealth and power. This kind of person craves power and wealth and so takes over many countries in the world, unfortunately. But it's a kind of sickness.
So after all the effort to make themselves big and ruining a country and its people, these pieces of work don't even enjoy the power they attain. Stalin was known to be paranoid and no doubt the same is true of the Kims in North Korea. It's truly a tragic situation all round.

We in Turkey just can't believe this is Turkmenistan. Really. Because Turkey is the closest country for Turkmenistan, we are both Oghuz Turks, we trade with them. But somehow today we are both led by insane dictators like Erdogan with his own palace, or Gurbanguly who is a bizarre macho. I bet Erdogan really want to have the similar Turkmenbashi title.

I was once invited to work for a gas company in this country. As soon as I found out it was an Islamic open air prison, I politely refused. I can imagine every single Islamic country is in full support of this man and his regime.

You do realize us muslims are hesitant to refer to central asians as muslims. Even if they are muslims, they probably are not very religious/they just call themselves muslims they arent really. These Soviet Style countries are not to be called by any religion.
