Thrown behind bars for an unknown crime, Marcus Lee saw the dark side of Dubai's booming property development industry when the economic crash shattered the dream. An exhausting battle for justice ensued.
When the outrageous glitter and stunning promise of Dubai beckoned, Australian couple Marcus & Julie Lee packed their bags and set off for the booming Middle Eastern city to chase their dreams. So how did Marcus Lee end up in filthy Dubai jails for nine months, unaware of what he’d done wrong? And why, when authorities finally charged him in connection with an alleged multi-million dollar property fraud, did it take close to five years to navigate the legal system, ultimately clear his name and return home?

Dubai is actually a place of hypocrisy. Prostitution is rampant but they hide it, some companies hold some immigrants passports so they would be afraid to leave because they charge so much money to get the passports back. They make their own rules, they treat women so bad and no respect for them. If you're a tourist there always bring all your documents wherever you go because they can make up a story and arrest you against your will.
Save your contact numbers of your friends at home in case of emergencies.

Idk, been living here for years and the woman aren't really getting any shit treatment... Quiet the opposite
@@Th3K37 It depends on where the woman is from... I'm from a small Southeast Asian country, which is very similar to Dubai, and I was treated as if I'm from a 3rd world country; I worked for a big international O&G company then and I speak very fluent English and yet the treatment I received (and mind you, no respect) received from the Emiratis and other Arabs were that I was a maid. Same treatment too from Arab kids...no respect at all.
Don't talk shit.. many powerful and opinionated women exist in the UAE, I've seen with my own eyes.. And I've seen women put crazy men in their place..
Rosie.. it depends.. I've heard of Gulf locals getting harsh treatment.. look what happened to that Jamal Khashoggi guy.. horrible.
I worked with a wise older Aussie who had to fly to Dubai to assist with a work prohect. One of the cheques he gave to pay a bill for bounced only by a balance of $3.00 due to a Dubian citizen Accountant not transfering an overdue payment to the business account of a huge and substantial amount of money - the Dubian government arrested this nice older man from Australia and the Dubian citizen who caused the mess got no repercussions. My Aussie friend spent just under a year in jail and by the end of it all - paid three sets of $35k bribes before they were freed.
It was the bank that received the cheque who called the police and all they had to do was just wait 4 more days for the balance to clear and for the cheque to be reissued. What this Aussie man was trying to pay for wasn't overdue and he just wanted to pay it earlier and had been advised by the Dubian accountant that the overdue transfer was all completed.
He says he will never ever forget how bad the jail was and also his mum helped pay for the bribes and release. Not even the particular company assisted.
But was this australian man arrested ?
I just saw on another video where a British woman was imprisoned for trumped up charges of having sex in a taxi. She later found out that someone, probably the taxi driver accused her of sexual immorality when her male friend put his hand on her shoulder! This is unbelievable to me.
This is utterly disgusting. When bad things happen to good men its so absolutely vile, even more so when someone else is guilty and allowing someone else to take the fall.
I cannot imagine how utterly soul destroying this has been and the toll its taken on every level.
This couple are amazing that they have survived this whole ordeal. I wish them a pleasant and happy future, may they forget this horrible experience in time. And may this be a lesson to all who travel this way.
This is why our constitution is so precious
Well said! !! Thank You God, for your son, our forefathers, and our VETERANS. Pray for our President, no matter who it is, like them or not, always pray for our President.
Well said Kim
The constitution of most countries is precious, whether it is implemented equally and fairly "there's the rub". Despite the constitution there's brutal discrimination against races, religions, class and status. The constitution is supposed to be for all people regardless of their race, color, creed or class.
Yet even our constitution isn’t protecting some Americans rights.

*Let me just scratch Dubai from my "To Visit" list. Done. LMAO*
Agreed, avoid countries with shariah law. Look up the law of any non Western foreign country!
I said and did the same thing. I respect keeping tight reigns but this would have me paranoid. No thanks..
@@whattafuareyou b*tch be quiet
Come scratch my ass you can’t even afford to come to Dubai just a bunch of window shoppers
Going there in a few weeks on way back from Europe to visit Burj Khalifa and Burj Al Arab, etc.. TOURIST ONLY.
Great documentary!
I've spent a lot of time working in the UAE, once the crash hit DXB many of the real criminals dumped cars and fled the country to avoid arrest, innocent people being put thru this is alarming and extremely concerning and I agree DXB is off my list full stop bec this can happen to anyone going to DXB is very risky ...loads of other places far safer. Extremely sad these 2 lost everything and were always not guilty shame on Dubai and happy they both got home ..really nice expats, horrible story guys, very absorbing documentary. Justice always prevails !!
*I am never visiting Dubai*
Very good, you safe your life
Me too
It's difficult to believe how impotent Australia is to help its citizens who are in legal trouble abroad. I thought that its abandonment of Julian Assange was simply due to the controversial nature of his case and because he could perhaps be seen as a "trouble maker". But none of that is apparent in this case. In fact, it looks like a new PM finally did gain their release, so the political power was always there. It was the political will of the Australian government that was missing. My only advice to my friends Down Under is not to count on your government if you get into legal trouble abroad. Its apparently occupied with more important things. ... jkulik919@gmail.com

It's a lot safer than Las Vegas.

Vegas is also near the bottom of my list
The advice to anyone is ask these people if they would advise against going to Dubai. I wouldn't touch the place with a barge poll. Heard stories like this or if you're western and get involved with their citizens or authorities accusing you of something don't expect due process.
Wow there own foreign minister charged 60k and you have the nerve to curse 🇦🇪 😂 said by the wife of one of the Australians
This guy was set up as a patsy right from the moment they set eyes on him. They knew exactly what they were doing and how it was going to end for him. It was one long con that even the courts knew but were too proud to admit they got screwed over.
Peace
They are all in on it been there
Dubai is a savage country i escaped dubai by changing my flight two times making it seem like i was going for a visa change in Bahrain from Bahrain to my country..took advantage of the over night immigration officers who were too tired and weren't keen on details. Looking back i swear its was so surreal.
This smells of bullshit...
@@ssdravidian well believe what you need to, am in my country despite the many cases i left behind.
Good for you, dude. I heard a news about an arab teen girl change took her flight on midnight &seek asylum in Australia, but they decline it, instead Canada help her out & became a citizen after she step her foot in Canadian land.

I cannot remember the details but a South African doctor who worked in Dubai lost a child patient through severe illness, not the fault of the doctor. He then left Dubai permanently after a while and returned to South Africa. He used their national airline to visit the US and on his way back to South Africa, whilst in transit in Dubai, was arrested and charged with murder. Needless to say he was jailed for a lengthy time and only obtained his release from custody, as far as I remember, through the intervention of the South African government. Thereafter he had to board with a friend, mostly taking advantage of his/their hospitality because he couldn't afford his own accommodation whilst he prepared his defence for his long drawn out court case fighting criminal charges. In the course of this terrible experience, this unfortunate doctor had to use up all his retirement savings for legal and living costs. Ultimately he was, thankfully, found not guilty and was able to return to South Africa.
thankfully, he was found not guilty. He returned to South Africa. Just, seems more accurate. Were he found not guilty and invited to come live with friends living safely in " " then, "thankfully" would be an appropriate emotion and as proper in structure as a single sentence. But, the good doctor, is not doing this, he is returning to South Africa. This is it's own... "sentence" I'm sure of it...
@@michaelstadtkowitz5214that day, a year ago, did you really have nothing better to do than to correct this poor person's grammar? Maybe they meant 'thankfully' in a 'thank goodness' kind of context. Poor form. Really poor form.
Nothing and no amount of money is worth your freedom.

Define freedom.
I'm not discounting what you wrote, but how many people think ALL homeless and broke people are just "too lazy" or subhuman? It's hypocritical to say that X is "too high a price" while glorifying celebrities and rich people.
I wouldn't do business there no matter how lucrative it may appear.
Do Business in Israel which has excellent laws and judicial system.Above all the Israelis and the Jews are very good people to do business with.

I come from the generation that watched the movie "Midnight Express" that told the real life story of a man that was sentenced to a Turkish for trying to smuggle hash. And it was so horrific that 40 years later I still deep dive any country I am traveling to. Including the stop over countries too. And especially anytime I have to go through a customs process. I also check my suitcase before I pack that there are no prohibited items in it. And I check that I have my prescriptions in their legitimate containers. I know that the story is different than this one specifically because I was on holiday, and they were working there. But my point is because I saw that movie I was aware by age 20 that while traveling to other countries you must be extra super careful. Because their laws and justice system could be corrupt. And if you don't know how to play their game you can get locked up and forgotten about in an instant. I'm so happy for this couple who finally got back to Australia. 💕
Man that's so sad what they all went through.

The same think happened to someone, i know personally. He almost died in jail in Dubai. He had Diabetic, no medizin, month long no doctors. He got a very bad infection in his foot, no medical treatment for weeks, denied! He stayed over one year in jail, only the embassy was able to get him out of jail and bring him back to his hometown. Today he's a very sick men, nothing like the men he was, before he went to Dubai. He's life, his health is totally destroyed through Dubai! Because of the non threatening of his very badly infected foot, one toe of this foot had to go for an amputation, one toe is gone. Dubai is a system of crime, no human rights and slavery labour!
The unfortunate lesson you learned: never work and live in a lawless middle eastern country !!! I wouldn't even go for a holiday !
