Love this. The music was played at my late step fathers funeral yesterday and whilst feeling so sad I sat and re imagined him watching this to make myself feel happier.
Torvill and Dean hold the record for the highest scoring single Olympic Ice Dance performance for Bolero. They had twelve 6.0s and six 5.9s. I believe it was also the most watched live Olympic Ice Dance performance. It was mesmerizing and breathtakingly beautiful. The passion, sensuality and chemistry was unsurpassed. To all who think it was slow, look at how Dean's shirt billows. In order to cover the entire Olympic Ice surface, you must move fast. The speed creates the wind that creates the billowing. This is my favorite Olympic performance to music.
YES!!! There is a moment when you really get surprised how they are FLYING on the surface... It really does take your breath away... Beautiful moment... I remember it like it was yesterday.
This is the one skating performance of all time that I have never forgotten. The chills, all flow, I knew what I was watching was searing in my brain for all time. They move fast, but never hurry, no rushing, they pay attention to each moment. It is a fully mature performance that still stands out in a sea of mostly highly charged youth skating routines.
I watched this in 1984 and haven't seen it since. I was in two minds as to whether to view it, thinking that after so many years of 'improvements', they would surely look awkward compared to the best of today's skaters, but no - they set a standard that I don't think will ever be surpassed. I've never seen anyone else move in such perfect harmony with the music and with the ice. Faultless four-part harmony.
I remember watching this in 1984. It really was an extraordinary and technically perfect. Really put the art of ice dancing in the forefront. Just beautiful ❤️
I nearly didn't watch them at the Olympics, but always been very glad I did. Watching this, all these years later, still has the same effect it did back then. At the time, I stood up and applauded, along with the audience. I still want to stand up and applaud. The Bolero music is so evocative. Never to be forgotten. Probably the best Ice Dance routine EVER!
No matter how many times I've watched this performance over the years, I'm still entranced by it. I remember watching this performance on TV in 1984...I stood up from my comfy chair and clapped, and rarely do I feel such elation that it brings tears, but I did on that day. Thank you, Torvill & Dean 💗
The official Olympic timer for this kinda skating didn’t start until you have both skates on the ice. Starting on the ground allowed them to make the most of the music and their routine without being penalised. It’s so innovative and definitely adds to the whole spectacle, it’s iconic really
Dean also changed the musical composition to shorten it a little and make it flow better for dancing. I think he paid the Royal Philharmonic to record it. As I am sure you know Dean was very wealthy.
Imagine, this is the one routine to the one composition that everyone who was alive at this time remembers. I’ve watched every Winter Olympics in the last 40 yrs, and i can’t remember any routine as memorable and iconic as this one.
I agree they are the best ever. In a sport where the Russians often, times dominate so much they must have looked on & thought if only they were Russian. Luckily, they are from GB.
Here I am September 2020. This performance never gets old. I saw it live (on TV) in 1984. I was so in awe of these two skaters, that I have never forgotten them.
I still adore this performance! I saw them in person at a dress rehearsal practice skate for Bolero. I was 10. I remember being stunned and had tears running down my face. I’d never seen anything so beautiful. The choreography was revolutionary at the time and still stands today ❤
Athleticism, grace, coordination, fluidity, sensuality, perfection...the greatest ice skating routine every accomplished. True artists in every sense of the word. They were beautiful to watch. The best ever.
So graceful! He lifts Jayne with so much ease, it’s as though she weighs nothing. I don’t think any other Olympic event was watched by so many people as this was, plus being from Nottingham same as them, we had a lot of additional pride.
Everything about this is outstanding, the costumes , how it picks up speed, the expertise, the sensuality, the timing, every single movement was sublime. Never see this again. Incredible .

CHILLS! Their unison and selflessness has become a rare thing to witness! I remember seeing this performance as a girl. Never knew who it was until now, but I remember being mesmerized at the time. Somehow, I don’t feel today’s skaters are achieving this kind pure dancing anymore. While they are indeed lovely to behold and spectacular to watch, there is something Torvill and Dean had that has been lost. Maybe I’m just old fashioned. The unison is always broken instead carrying them through their moves.
When I first saw them on television - 1984 - I thought it was disappointing as I had heard so much about Torvill and Dean that I was sick of them. Seeing this again in 2020, I find it simply amazing. I recall watching their dazzling performance in Los Angeles in 1984....every time I hear "Bolero", my mind goes back to the Torvill and Dean Magnificent skating....Never will be duplicated, Never !!!!!!

Ice dancing has changed so much. Now all about how fast you can go and the hardest moves, this has much more authenticism and innovation.
It's because a lot of the moves they did are now banned (laying on the ground/on the knees, holds with the legs, all are illegal).
People really always try to seek something negative. Torvill and Dean themselves were special and innovative at their time. They changed ice dancing forever and are one of the reasons why ice dance looks the way it does today. Also ice dancing is not only an art but also a sport.
A well deserved victory! What a beautiful performance

Perfect ART then and now. Legends
I recall watching their dazzling performance in Los Angeles in 1984....every time I hear "Bolero", my mind goes back to the Torvill and Dean Magnificent skating....Never will be duplicated, Never !!!!!!
Gives me goosebumps each time, watching this. What a wonderful, wonderful performance!
Chills here too. Watching in August. 2019
On bad days I watch Torvil and Dean. The beauty soothes. They are remarkable then and now.
40 years later and I still get goosebumps and choke up watching it. The effort, grace and skill they put into this was and still is phenomenal 💕
Torvill and Dean set the bar in Ice Dancing. To this day, no other Ice Dancing pair has been able to match Torvill and Dean's performance and reach that bar!
nothing will ever beat this perfection
Breath taking 40 years ago breathtaking today 7/30/2024
Bravo, Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean, enchantingly exquisite!
Still give’s me goosebumps watching them. Perfection. Makes me proud to be British.
This remains to be the most artistic and beautiful figure skating duo performance ever
