While you're on J Cole you should play "Be Free" for you dad. Do the live version on David Letterman where you can really hear the pain and passion in his voice.
Oh No! I can't watch that day. "Be Free" makes me cry every time I hear J Cole perform that song on letterman. He has not performed that song since being on letterman. He says that it takes him to a dark place that is hard to come back from. It's incredible; it takes me to a sad, but hopeful place. He is speaking for me. Love it and him.
I will never understand how it’s possible to make such a masterpiece. Cole really changed the way so many people see life with this incredible song, my favourite artist of all time no doubt.
“There’s no such thing as a life that’s better than yours” - every life is valuable and nothing is worth more than a life regardless of how difficult it is or how much you struggle. Your life is just as valuable as those who have it better and those who have it worse

Worth mentioning that he actually made a splash on the mixtape scene in the late 2000's with a heavy skew towards socially conscious hip hop. On his first album, however, he felt the pressure to release braggadocio songs in order to chase commercial success. This album was a return to his roots, as symbolized by him naming it after his childhood home address and buying the same house from that time.

"There's beauty in the struggle, ugliness in the success"

“There’s no such thing as a life that’s better than yours” one of the best lines

It's beauty in the struggle, ugliness in the success
Hear my words or listen to my signal of distress

Compared to some of my niggas down the block
Man, we were blessed
And life can't be no fairytale, no once upon a time
But I be God damned if a nigga don't be tryin'
So tell me mama please why you be drinking all the time?
Does all the pain he brought you still linger in your mind?

No such thing as a life that's better than yours
No such thing, no such thing
For what's money without happiness?
Or hard times without the people you love
Though I'm not sure what's 'bout to happen next
I asked for strength from the Lord up above
Cause I've been strong so far
But I can feel my grip loosening
Quick, do something before you lose it for good
Get it back and use it for good
And touch the people how you did like before
I'm tired of living with demons
Cause they always inviting more
Think being broke was better
Now I don't mean that phrase with no disrespect
To all my niggas out there living in debt
Cashing minimal checks
Turn on the TV see a nigga Rolex
And fantasize about a life with no stress
I mean this shit sincerely
And that's a nigga who was once in your shoes
Living with nothin' to lose
I hope one day you hear me
Always gon' be a bigger house somewhere, but nigga feel me
Long as the people in that motherfucker love you dearly
Always gon' be a whip that's better than the one you got
Always gon' be some clothes
That's fresher than the ones you rock
Always gon' be a bitch that's badder out there on the tours
But you ain't never gon' be happy till you love yours
No such thing as a life that's better than yours
No such thing as a life that's better than yours
No such thing as a life that's better than yours

The grass is always greener on the other side of the fence, but chasing those materialistic pleasures won’t ever fulfill you. You always be chasing the next thing, car, house, job, woman etc etc You have to appreciate the things that you have, the real things, then you will finally learn to love yourself and in turn those around you (who actually love you for you). I think that’s what Cole was trying to express or at lest what I get from it. Great song choice btw and God Bless ☦️
"The message, I need time to digest this" Dad bars!
