‘Don’t do it’: Somali president warns Ethiopia over Somaliland port deal

- Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has warned Ethiopia against taking steps to implement a controversial port deal it brokered with the breakaway region of Somaliland.
Under a memorandum of understanding (MOU) signed on January 1, Somaliland leased landlocked Ethiopia 20km (12 miles) of its coastland around the port of Berbera, on the Gulf of Aden, for 50 years for military and commercial purposes.
In an exclusive interview with Al Jazeera on Tuesday, Mohamud said Ethiopian assets would have to cross into Somalia’s territory in order to reach the leased area and warned Addis Ababa against taking such a step.
“So far Ethiopians haven’t come into Somalia. If they will, then that will be a problem at a different level,” Mohamud said.

Mind you Ethiopia had its own port in Eritrea but decided to give it out for free. Now they realize their mistake and want to destabilize Somalia and threaten to take part of Somalia by force. Ethiopia is headed on a downhill trajectory and on the brink of civil war as a result of all the internal wars abiy ahmed has created. He wants to distract Ethiopians from the war crimes his committed by creating this external problem with Somalia.

That's easy to understand. Ethiopia desperately needs sea access if they are to escape from an agricultural economy and develop into a manufacturing economy. Right now, Djibouti extorts them for 10% of their whole GDP just for port access. This is stunting their growth. They would like port access that is more reasonably priced. Somaliland is desperate for recognition, so the price they would charge for port access would be much lower. If Ethiopia deals directly with Somalia, they will be dealing with a fragile and dysfunctional state that has the ability to charge more for a worse service. They could charge even more than Djibouti, but now Ethiopia has to pay far more in insurance because of all the instability from clan wars and pirates. Ethiopia gains nothing from dealing directly with Somalia, but they gain everything from dealing with Somaliland, which is stable, peaceful, and comes at a manageable price.

This is a genuine question. As I have researched, Somaliland people have got their own passport. The people is governed by their own government. They celebrate their own independence day in May every year. Why doesn’t Somalia deal with Somaliland first before just blaming Ethiopia to protect and move forward with their people’s interest, eradicating poverty? Why Somalia seek Ethiopia to do Somali’s homework with Somaliland that they never done? I really need a logical answer.

The hard truth of the matter is that Bihi’s incompetence is increasingly becoming more apparent as more of his cover-ups come into the public domain. The surrendering of the airspace management in 2019 and then hiding it from the public was a great example. Darod is part of Somaliland’s building blocks of its currently unrecognized state and you need to keep all its community blocks together to achieve greater goals. Bihi is the first leader to fail this responsibility! Blaming Garxajis, Darod or any other sub-clan of Somaliland will not solve the consequences of his poor leadership, it will embolden him and result in collective suffering of the community. I am from Eritrea and stand in solidarity with Somalia's position. Ethiopia already faces internal challenges, and it would be inadvisable for them to exacerbate the situation. Maintaining regional stability is crucial, and it is my sincere hope that Ethiopia refrains from such actions.

The only reason why Somalia is opposing the deal between Ethiopia and Somaliland is because of the “recognition”
Somalia already leases parts of its land to countries like Turkey and they already have Ethiopian troops inside Somalia.
So here’s the real issue, Somalia understands the case of Somaliland is a complex case and if this case to goes to int court they would most likely lose in legal battle, so instead they opted for a dangerous strategy which is to isolate and exhaust Somaliland to the point of them giving up their hopes of becoming independent country.

If any country is ready to give us a pieces of land, we are ready due to our rapid population growth over 110 million and exponential economic growth. Ethiopia is peaceful country,
