- Landlocked Ethiopia signed a memorandum of understanding with Somaliland, an internationally unrecognized region in the Horn of Africa that is only recognized as part of Somalia. Many fear that Ethiopia's deal with Somaliland might destabilize the Horn of Africa. To discuss this issue host Haydé Adams is joined by senior editor of VOA Somali Harun Maruf, PHD fellow at the Center for Constitutional Democracy at Indiana University Alemayehu Fentaw Weldemariam and legal expert Guleid Ahmed Jama, who is joining from Hargeisa in Somaliland .

Wow, these VOA journalists don’t even do a simple fact check now days. Ethiopia is already using the port of Berbera and they own 19% shares. The issue here is on the MOU it says Ethiopia will lease 20 km of land in the coast of Lughaya not far from Berbera port and built their own commercial/military port in return for some 15% of Ethiopia Airlines and after evaluating Somalialand maybe maybe a recognition. I also have an otherwise opinion on why Muuse Biixi took the best decision ever. That is Muuse has united the Dhulbaante clan which has been suffering under the current and the previous regimes of Somaliland that eventually led them to liberate their regions from Muuse's control. To be honest, Somalis and Ethiopians having been working hard to leave the past conflicts and be brothers and neighbors and do business together. There are more legit ways for Ethiopia to be able to access the sea for commercial purposes in Somalia, but not through Somaliland is a non-starter. Now, it will even make it impossible for even Somali to agree on anything. Abiy lacks experience, and I don't think he reads history books. Someone has to tell him it is not going to happen what he is trying to do. To access a sea requires peace where your shipment will pass. Abiy is about to start war in the Horn. If he thought Eritrea about 4 million people, that war was too hot to handle, he thinks he can force Somalia 18 million people something that they do not approve. The guy at 15:20 is lying. Ogaden region became part of Ethiopia in 1887 after Emperor Menelik won a war with the local clan based inhabitants. It was annexed by Italy to the Italian Somalia during its 5 years invasion of Ethiopia. After Italy lost WW2 and left Somalia it was returned back to Ethiopia by the British in 1948.

Somaliland meets the criteria for statehood as set by the 1933 Montevideo Convention, generally
considered a norm of customary international law:
A permanent population, a defined territory, effective government, a capacity to enter into relations with other States.
Somaliland adheres to the
colonial borders of the former British Protectorate of Somaliland and does not violate the AU Charter or the Consultative Act of the African Union principle which require that former colonial borders should be maintained upon independence.
The AU’s fact-finding mission of 2005 affirmed as much, noting that Somaliland was a unique case which should be judged “from an objective historical viewpoint and a moral angle vis-à-vis the aspirations of the people.

If Ethiopia helps Somaliland and recognises it as a sovereign nation it would be a good step towards independence but Ethiopia may face some consequential risks. But the advantages for regional integration, peace and security, and economic progress are overwhelmingly big. However. the question will be how Somaliland can trigger the procedure at the UN to ultimately decide by an assembly to take Somaliland as its new member. Ethiopia or a group of other member countries must again request at the UN for recognition as Somalia opposes the move.

Ethiopian forces have been in Somalia since 2006! Helped to establish federal Somali government. Has troops and bases in Badoa, Galmudug, Kismayu etc. But you still claim Ethiopian forces can not have a base in Somaliland? Are you even ready to go to war? Speak the truth it's not about Ethiopia!
