Eat yourself healthy -your microbiome and you | Sheena Cruickshank | TEDxManchester

  • We are never alone with around 38 trillion bacteria co-habiting our body. These bacteria along with a whole host of other organisms make up our microbiome. Our microbiome has co-evolved with us and has many vital roles for our health. Bacteria also have an amazing ability to change and enable their host to do things they couldn’t normally do. However, changes in our microbiome are also linked to a whole host of diseases and conditions including obesity. The big question is whether we change our microbiome to exploit its beneficial functions. Find out how our microbiome is so important for our wellbeing, the extreme measures some people are taking to manipulate it and what you can do to eat yourself healthy. Professor Sheena Cruickshank is an immunologist in the University of Manchester. Our immune system is crucial to recognise infections but also has to cooperate with helpful microbes like the ones that live in our gut and her research focuses on the way the body’s immune system interacts with a host of microbes from bacteria to parasites.
She also regularly discusses infection and her research in the media (TV, radio and press). This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

Thanks for sharing this! To add to this, some mistakes people may make in trying to fix gut health include: adding a probiotic to help with excessive gas and bloating (that's just one piece of the puzzle), eliminating a food for 4 days and expecting it solve the issue (will take at least 2 weeks), and not thinking about root causes!

What if the civilization of good microbes🦠 were actually civilizations throughout the whole body ? Intelligent and structured like people , but even more so for the moment. What if your body which houses your spirit was a machine that is operated by these civilizations of microbes , and all we had to do was supply them with the proper food and let them do there job assisting them when needed , after proper research.

The active chemical Glyphosate in this Herbicide is being found in most everything we Eat & Drink 3 times a day month after month & Year after year. I could argue the opposite that people eating a variety of foods typically are eating healthier than people on a simple fast food diet which is probably what this boils down to. Each food will have a dominant mix of bacteria processing it so overall you'll see a greater mix. I just don't see where exactly evolution rewarded people who ate a variety of foods happened. Cows eat grass thats it, what about variety there?

holly not everyone is different and some do good with vegan and others do better on low carbs. stop trying to make everyone do what you do. We all have to learn, test and find what is best for us. What is with people who try and force the masses to do what they do? They are only one. We all should just be happy for the person when they have found what works for them as you found what is good for you, that is great! It is nice to hear what works for you just don't think because it works for you it will work for all. There is no war here.

What would have been far more interesting is what this lady COULD have said after what she said at the end of the video: what foods does she think wholesome for a healthy microbiome, and not just in general but specific and commented. So it should have begun where it left off and then it would have been much more useful, isn't it...
