  • In a fascinating review of clinical research on the impacts of microbes on human behavior, Kathleen McAuliffe provides a microbiological perspective to the age-old questions: “Is there such a thing as free will?” and “Am I captain of my ship?” In her talk, she explores the microbiotas in our gut and their potential influences on our brains and neurological disorders. For more context on research discussed in this talk, see below:
4:44 (clarification): Further investigation is warranted to understand the role of gut inflammation in depression. For more see here: www.nih.gov/news-events/nih-r...
6:52 (clarification): The molecule discussed here is 4EPS, a bacterial metabolite. The relationship between gut microbiota and autism spectrum disorders remains an ongoing field of study. For more see here: www.nature.com/articles/s4158...
Highlighting ongoing clinical medical and pharmaceutical research, Kathleen provides exciting news about the efforts to identify good and bad bacteria actors that potentially influence various neuropsychiatric conditions and possible new therapies that could forever change how we treat disease. Kathleen McAuliffe is the author of the book This Is Your Brain On Parasites: How Tiny Creatures Manipulate Our Behavior and Shape Society (Houghton Mifflin), a bestseller in parasitology and microbiology that has been translated into six languages. In addition, she has written articles for over a dozen national magazines, including Discover, The New York Times, The Atlantic, US News & World Report, Smithsonian, and the Los Angeles Times. Earlier in her career, she was a health columnist for More Magazine, and a senior science editor at US News & World Report and Omni Magazine.
In addition to writing, McAuliffe is an adjunct professor at the University of Miami where she alternates each semester between teaching a course on the human microbiome and environmental journalism.
McAuliffe was educated at Trinity College Dublin, Ireland, obtaining an M.A. in natural science after graduating with first-class honors (highest distinction). This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

    6 Take a home message:
    1. Introduction to the influence of gut microbiota on behavior and cognition:
    - Gut microbiota play a crucial role in bodily functions, especially in the gut, impacting digestion, mood, energy level, appetite, memory, and possibly personality.
    2. Evidence of the influence of gut microbiota on behavior and cognition:
    - Studies with bubble mice indicate the significant influence of gut bacteria on behavior and cognition.
    - Transferring gut bacteria from overweight or depressed individuals to bubble mice produces corresponding symptoms in the animals.
    - Gut bacteria can communicate with the brain through the vagus nerve, producing psychoactive compounds that influence brain function.
    - Inflammation caused by aggressive gut bacteria can lead to depression, indicating an indirect way gut bacteria can signal the brain.
    3. Vagus Nerve Stimulation (VNS) as a treatment for mental disturbances:
    - VNS involves electrically stimulating the vagus nerve, potentially having effects similar to gut bacteria on the nerve.
    - VNS strengthens the gut barrier, preventing inflammation from spreading to the brain.
    - VNS has been approved for treating severe epilepsy and depression and shows potential benefits for ADHD, OCD, and PTSD.
    4. Manipulating gut bacteria for mental disturbance treatments:
    - Microbiota researchers are exploring treatments for mental disturbances by manipulating gut bacteria composition and their chemicals.
    - Certain bacteria molecules in the blood have been linked to autism spectrum disorder, and clinical trials aim to prevent their effects on the brain.
    - Lactobacillus reuteri, found in yogurt, has shown to promote social bonding in animal models of autism, and trials are underway to test its effects in autistic children.
    - Research is being conducted to use beneficial bacteria and specific vitamins to potentially delay ALS progression.
    5. Gut bacteria and neurological disorders:
    - Parkinson's disease may start in the gut, with a strain of E. coli producing a misfolded compound similar to the Parkinson's protein alpha synuclein.
    - The misfolding spreads up the vagus nerve, leading to Parkinson's symptoms.
    - Patients with Parkinson's often experience constipation many years before neurological symptoms appear, suggesting a gut-brain connection.
    - Cutting the vagus nerve reduces the risk of developing Parkinson's, supporting the gut-brain connection.
    - Understanding the gut's role in Parkinson's offers new possibilities for intervening in disease progression and developing interventions for neurological conditions.
    6. Importance of gut health in behavior and overall health:
    - The person's behavior is influenced not only from the brain down but also from the gut up, highlighting the importance of gut health.

Excellent talk ! But, it would be an incomplete journey if one hasn't heard the renowned cell biologist Dr. Bruce Lipton and his talk 'Biology of Belief' who has made significant contributions in the field epigenetics.
Here are a few of his quotes from his talk :
    1. You may consider yourself an individual, but as a cell biologist, I can tell you that you are in truth a cooperative community of approximately fifty trillion single-celled citizens.
    2. Beliefs are the operating system of the cell, and just like computer software, they can be changed to upgrade the system.
    3. Our environment is constantly sending signals to our cells, and we have the power to choose how we respond to the signals.
    4. The environment that surrounds us and the thoughts that fill our mind, create chemical reactions in our body that determine our biology.
    5. When we change our perception, we change the chemistry of our body.
    6. Epi means "above" so when I say epigenetic control, I am literally saying, "control over the genes." This is the new biology. It reveals that the environment and our perception of the environment are what control our genetic activity.
All of the work done by Dr. Bruce Lipton reaffirms that Free Will is not a thing, as the question raised by the speaker Kathleen McAuliffe that - is there such a 'thing' as Free Will ? The Will is like the axe of the Mind. Being part of the Mind, it then all boils down to the 'State of the Mind' as to how sharp it is or how blunt it is, in it's response to the signals of the environment.
The speaker is quite right that our behaviour is not just controlled from the top down, but quite literally from the bottom up. But, it's an incomplete conclusion without including the play of the Mind to what controls our behaviour considering three observations by Dr. Bruce Lipton as below :
    1. The mind and the body are not separate entities, they are part of the same system.
    2. The mind is not in the brain, the mind is in the field that surrounds the body.
    3. The mind is the software of the body, and the external environment is the hardware.
Thanks once again for this wonderful talk. It got me thinking and to connect the dots upon the work of both these biologists, highlighting how we get hit in life and how we can protect ourselves from becoming victims 🙏

Look at the sunlight warming the day. The light you see has traveled over ninety-million miles to greet you. These rays arrive, one after another, every instant to brighten the world around you. But if you were to hold up a convex lens, you would experience even more of its power.
Imagine harnessing the power of your mind like a convex lens. Like cars merging when lanes are reduced, you can concentrate your thoughts together.
What could you switch off today so that all your power might converge like rays of the sun brought into a focus?

@vrfamilia It is possible through intermittent fasting for 24 hours or more (search for Dr. Mindy Pelz, she has a channel here on UA-cam and talks a lot about the benefits of intermittent fasting based on scientific studies. From 24 hours of fasting, bad bacteria of the microbiome begin to be eliminated by our body), regularly consuming fermented drinks such as Kefir, rejuvelac (it is the drink resulting from the fermentation of grains such as wheat, barley, quinoa, chia in water for a few days)
or vegetables, greens, and even apples fermenting in brine are great ways to improve your gut microbiome.

Wow! God bless you. ❤️🙏🏻 Thank you. This would also dramatically help people who have the post-infectious illnesses of ME/CFS, Long COVID, post-infectious Giardiasis, post-infectious Lyme Disease, etc. Right now they are told by many physicians that their illnesses are “functional”, and they should do “brain re-training.” But neurologically oriented efforts at exercise, etc also improve the physical health of people with neuro disease like Parkinson’s. The post-infectious illnesses are true disease processes that change the bio-chemistry of the body cellularly, such as COVID virus engaging and changing the electric processes of the heart or vascular function, just like Gulf War Syndrome creates high blood pressure in a young man who participated in the military exercises in that war. We might send him to the psychiatrist’s couch for his PTSD, or “brain retraining” for his anger outbursts, or even offer him vagus nerve stimulation, but these are no guarantee that the illness will remit or be cured by these methods. You still need to treat his hbp or he could experience stroke or heart attack, right? We need to treat the post-infectious illnesses these viruses cause, as well. Further, they can be avoided altogether prophylactically by eating foods that help balance healthy guts, and using pre- and probiotics in this way during an epidemic or pandemic, as well. Thank you for this beautiful talk, and for your research efforts. 🙏🏻

way out of left field here, but my internet pet project is to essentially bring to attention the notion of memories from past lives into the relevant sphere of discord, this talk, helps add to that approach by suggesting the possibility that the benchmark for past lives memories may require more than just the very specific genes of the person, but also a lucky streak of gut microbes and their corresponding circumstances. which if ever established in some coherency could prove the Kardeshev scale of civilization's evolution to be wrong, as it would imply the possibility of a less-than-type 1 civilization being capable of playing around with the space-time lattice via instances of a mind in very specific epochs. the troubling notion of cause and effect in this space is not for the ones that would advocate not knowing the end, as it implies that the singularity must occur 1st, and then propagate into the future. this is the part that I don't like: the asymmetrical universe is weird, yo! Does it occur in parallel ?or in series? or both? eeep.....
