I know of course you’ve been a long time collector of the format Oliver, but it’s interesting to see how LaserDisc has grown so much in popularity in the 12 months or so. I totally understand it. It’s fascinating to go back and see the origin of home video staples: commentaries, featurettes, surround sound, inserts. It all started with LaserDisc. It’s a good time to be a fan of home video. The retro and the modern scenes are booming. Talking of modern, can’t wait for the new Dawn of the Dead set next month!
It was pretty obvious why the official DVDs have almost no episodes from the earlier seasons; the music videos took up so much of the runtime, there'd be almost nothing left after you take those out!
The Alien 3 work print is an underrated classic, anybody who is a fan of the Alien films, who has yet to see it, I urge you to track down this version of the film.
Another great video. I'm REALLY interested to see if you'd consider releasing a video a week on your gaming memories and showing boxes etc. I'm 46. I grew up with Japanese MD and SFC. Boxes were incredible.
Very cool to see you get some new LDs. Just when you think you’re done they come out and you suddenly have a bunch more! I said I was stopping a few years ago and they keep coming in.... A quick note or two: Dick Tracy is actually open matte and is a nice test disc for player performance because of the color. Japanese discs are so cool and very collectible though they’re usually identical transferwise to USA releases. It’s a bit strange to use proxy sites at first but they can result in amazing deals. The Alien releases do seem to follow the USA releases. The 1995 ac3 used the sensurround test mix with the differences and the later releases have a track labeled 70mm version (IIRC in a 4.1 configuration) but the last time I checked it just doesn’t have the intensive feeling of the LD ac3 which I refer to as the “pee your pants” mix. By comparison the Dolby Stereo sounds like a mono track! Aliens SE is the iconic LD boxset but you have to find a non rotted copy which I finally did. The transfer is good for what it is but actually the later reissue of the theatrical cut has an amazing transfer which has become a LD fan favorite.
Some interesting pick ups there Oliver 👍 A unique cover for Gremlins 2 there. I’ve got no plans to buy anymore myself for the forceable future but I know I can be easily tempted if it’s a good deal 🙂📀
I've never watched a laserdisc before. Is the quality better than DVD or is it like a step down? Guessing it just never took off due to the size of the discs. In fact I dont think I ever even seen any laserdiscs growing up in Ireland now that I think about it. It was all VHS here until DVDs came in...well in the west of Ireland anyway!
Alien is my favorite horror movie also Aliens and Ghostbusters are really some of my favorite movies of all time. I watch them every Halloween season on dvd and blu ray.
Nice, just got that Japanese Robocop this week as a counterpoint to the Criterion, quality was excellent, ill probably stick to that instead of swapping discs :D
Physical film copies are fun for the art but id rather have them digital, easier to store, access on multiple devices etc, then there is the issue of constant upgrading as new resolution versions get released making the older copies worthless. Physical games however make total sense to me from a collector perspective as they generally dont change much.
There’s one video game inspired film on Laserdisc that I don’t think you have. It’s the Japanese pressing of “Pokémon: The First Movie - Mewtwo Strikes Back.”
Yes I did! The new extras were a bit disappointing in their quality and 88 films used the same master from the previous release which exhibits lots of noise and grain.
I dont understand what those streetfighter LD's are? Is it a video about the game? Or is it the game you can play on certain LD-players? Totally confused.
Perhaps it’s like collecting art? the movies themselves would look better on Blu-ray and 4K discs, but the big LP style sleeves have artwork that is often unique to the laserdisc format and the rarity of laserdiscs makes them more collectible. A premium product from a time when digital media was still exotic and new.
What is the point even to buy a physical support ? every single edition will be replaced by another one ? you think because you purchase blurays you're safe because they're sooooo " high technology" ? well that what every single generation though of their support, LD, then Muse, then DVD, then HD CD, then Bluray, then 3D bluray, then 4K bluray, then of course 8K Bluray and to finish 16K bluray before virtual reality streams directly transferred to your brain. If you buy every edition of a nice trilogy ( could be back to the future, lord of the ring, Alien you name it ... ) and voila, you will buy the first edition, then the director's cut, the extended version, the special edition then the re-cut special christmas edition, and of course then the infamous '' special box set edition with a plastic gizmo for suckers" ....so at the end, you why not LD ? nice and sleak presentation, discs are gorgeous to look at...you don't care of what is inside because you can get the movie by simply downloading it or getting it on a streaming channel without menus, adverts, or forgetting the disc in your player or putting it in the wrong jacket.

Man this is the best video game/movie review/retrospective channel on UA-cam
I also always liked more Beavis and Butt-Head doing stuff rather than watching music videos and I was the weird kid because of that haha

That Aliens box set is SEX-EE

That flipped Ghostbusters logo irks me.
Oliver looking kinda fit. Some bicep veins visible there. If your working out- keep it up!

I don’t ever really remember laser disc being a thing or even seeing it in shops. Was it just for people who collect rare items ?

¥800,000 is approx £5,860
It's $6949 American dollars.
You got some awesome LD's Oliver

Please do another 4K blu ray collection!
Theirs a 4.0 mix on the blue ray of Alien I own I wonder if that is the 70mm mix?
800000 yen is 7640.51 in u.s. dollar and 5856.82 in Pound sterling in today's money.
I used to live Laserdisc.
No longer have a player and only ever kept ahold of the Star Wars trilogy. Don’t know why.
I'm the ultimate bad-ass....
Oliver,
Was that the Cannon Films jingle in the background at the beginning of the video?
Sounds like it to me
"That was a lie"
Everyone approved
Would you consider reviewing/looking back at Joel Schumacher’s film adaptation of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “The Phantom of the Opera” from 2004?

Tempted to get that Aliens Special Edition one. And I don't even own a laserdisk player! 😃

Im not a fan of Pokemon.
@@OliverHarper Sorry. I didn’t know.
Another great laserdisc video. Oliver did you get the street fighter the movie blu-ray from 88 films?
Yes I did! The new extras were a bit disappointing in their quality and 88 films used the same master from the previous release which exhibits lots of noise and grain.
@@OliverHarper I thought you might; sorry you were disappointed with the extras though.
Why do you still purchase laser discs in 2020 vs bluray or 4K UHD"?
i never had laser dice around 90s
Sometimes you should write your comment in your native language.
I heard the Who Framed Roger Rabbit Laser Disc is a popular collectors item.
🐇
at 8-15 US i wouldn't say it's that high on the laser disc collector's list ;)
Nearly 8 Grand in today's dollar is what you'll pay for that LD player. Totally worth it.
Are you planning to review Beavis and buthead do America some time?
Oliver do a review on the Wraith and no you'll never find a copy of it on LaserDisc
can someone explain to me what is the appeal of lasedisc collecting? legit question :)
As of today, 800000 Yen is $7600 US. That's a lot for a media player...
Interesting

Its just gameplay footage on a LaserDisc, its weird haha
@@OliverHarper cool. Thanks for the info.
What are these Japanese websites where you can get Laserdisc for dirt cheap?
Its Jauce.com
You need to review under seige.
I Cant stop collectiong ld. Rarely watch them though
What is with all these corona comments?
Aliens 😍
Whats the point in collecting LaserDiscs ? They are obsolete like VHS
