The Pale Blue Dot - A Tribute to Carl Sagan

  • As I rejected religion for the first time in my late 30s, I only recently discovered the power and poetry of Carl Sagan's work, and as I was no longer bound by the constraints of religious thinking, I couldn't help but experience a feeling of profound gratitude that, even after his death, he could help me feel awe and wonder at the universe.
Mine is just one of many visual translations of his words. But with it, I hope that a new audience will be introduced to Carl Sagan and can experience this amazing look at the cosmos through his eyes. -Seth

Heaven is not my home. Hell is not my home. And despite what anyone says. Earth will always be the place where my family, friends, and memories will always be. Its where I rode my first bike, It's where I lost my first tooth, and where I had my first kiss. Earth will always be my home. :)

Its been repeated time and again, but I still have to say: Carl Sagan's words can help any being's day.
No matter the trouble, neither big nor small, can give me this feeling of hope and wonder through it all.
And so Mr. Sagan, as I raise my glass renewed, this one here, this one is for you.

This version of 'Pale Blue Dot' remains my favorite. Reid Gower's is great, but this is better. I just spent about ten minutes trying to find it because I hadn't watched it in a long time and couldn't remember the uploader. Thanks again Seth. Thanks again Carl.

The version in the Atheists OK conference is slightly different to this one. Probably just the audio. Is this Sagan's voice used here, or simply someone with similar vocal traits? I'm not familiar enough with his voice to be sure but it sounds like him. And as good as the voice is in the other version, this one works better in my opinion.

Me too. Every time, I feel desolate, in moments of despair, I play this video and other versions of it and each time I hear, I can feel the calm. The profoundness of the words and the thought is immense, leaving you humbled. I like this version of "The pale blue dot" too... ua-cam.com/video/zpZHUjKnDpE/v-deo.html

Imagine someone builds a city. He builds it from the ground up. Every single building, wall, window, park, corner, street, bar, sidewalk. A really really big city built from scratch; and the builder says: "I built everything here FOR YOU, but you are not allowed to leave this tiny room. If you go outside, you will die". That is how stupid the "God made the universe for us to enjoy" argument sounds to me. Peace to everyone!!

This gives me goosebumps every time I hear it. So powerful, so Sagan. I just love it. I miss him. May his memory continue to inspire people to science, reality and humanism, just like he have done to me and many others. He was a great man with a great goal - to make reach out to everyone and teach about science - and he did it exceptionally well.
I can't do anything but truly admire, love and respect that man. A true hero.

What a very humbling video. Just shows how very small and insignificant we all are in the grand scale of things. How fragile our "pale blue dot" really is. Should we not all work in our own small way to make a better happier pleasant place to be for us all no matter how long or short our lives are. And be thankful not to a god but to the universe that we were given a time to enjoy it. Do not spoil it for future generations.

I would like to point out "a mote of dust, suspended in a sunbeam" is on the scale of just WITHIN our Solar System alone! Say we make a scale model of our Solar System something comprehensible, like the width of a home 45 feet across - about the width of a mid-sized home, with the Sun in the middle and the orbit of the outermost planet (Neptune / Pluto) 22.5 feet out. The Sun would be 1/16 of an inch in diameter. The Earth would be 6 3/4 inches out from the Sun. The size of the Earth would fit FIVE TIMES across a human hair! Truly "a mote of dust, suspended in a sunbeam" on just the scale of the Solar System, forget about the Universe, or even the galaxy! Take the same 45 feet width and make that our Milky Way Galaxy... our Solar System at the scale could be placed 370 times across the width of a human hair. Place the known Universe in that 45 feet, and at that scale our Milky Way Galaxy could be placed 5 times across the width of a human hair.

I havent told anyone yet. But today, after a long Journey of listening, learning, thinking and maybe a little bit of understanding, i made a decision.
A little Storytime: I grew up in a conservative religious Household, all my thoughts, habits and time had been drawn towards God and how i need him in my life. I got taught, not only through my Parents but also Church and friends that i am a bad Person, we all are, since birth and we need Salvation. If we dont have that, we wont go to Heaven. Heaven, a better Earth with no Evil, no hatred and only love and peace. But one day i dared to ask Questions about my own Religion. Questions that i got told, are bad. That they would take me away from God and would perish my salvation. At first it seemed to me that those Questions even strenghtens my faith in God. And its beautiful. Faith is a beautiful thing. Faith creates alternatives. Alternatives for those who's life's got to difficult to stand. But then i started to question myself, my Motivations to believe, my Motivations to have faith. And i found..nothing. Everything that i used to believe got taken its ground away as i started to Question it. I mentaly went into a state of Delirium, flooting helpless in the Void, with nothing in there but Questions. Who am i?, why am i here?, what is my task? all those Questions which usually were answered with "Jesus" got rolled new in a different light of perspective. A perspective of honesty. All my Questions changed essentially from; "Are you believing in God?" to "If you are Honest to yourself, are you realy believing or just acting like it, because you got told to, with the consequenz of 'HELL' if my answer would be "no"?
My Journey isnt over. But i reached an important timestamp. I decieded today, to go full Honest in the Atempt to Match what i think and what i believe with what i do. I will leave the Church. Not because i dont believe. But because i cant say "Yes" without lying to myself and to whoever asks me. I simply dont know!
So if there is a God, may he forgive me for loosing my faith in a World that is so beautiful that it can make Grown Men and Women standing in awe and humility, but yet so cruelsome that it makes people taking their own life and often others because they simply cant bear the difficulty of it.
A World, unnoticable in the light of the Universe but yet so astonishing and unique that we can barely explain its Origins and complexity in their tiniest detail.
A World where the only thing i can say is that we Humans right now, realy dont deserve to life on this tiny blue pale dot we call our Home because with all our Intelligenze, with all our knowledge we still havent developed the ability to Show respect for the very Nature that Provides us everything we need, to life a happy life even with our own Species.

I've read parts of that book and I also read another book called the Dawkins Delusion. I agree with Dawkins that religion has caused harm however it's not religion per se that causes harm. It's the human ego which causes harm. Even if the whole world was atheistic, I could guarantee you that there would be just as much violence and suffering. We need to humble ourselves from the tiny point of light taken 3.7 billion years into space and realize we need more love and compassion.

If we wish to be deemed civilized we must become like Carl Sagan. However he was indeed unique and it would be wishful thinking to expect that we can change our ways. This beautiful planet is filled with a bloodthirsty and greedy bunch of savages called Homo Sapiens with little prospect of them ever becoming like Carl Sagan. You also have the corrupting influence of competing religions with deitys that espouse violence on a global scale and dividing populations and driving them to wars in the name of their deity. If we want to emulate Sagan we must divest ourselves of these corrupting influences and strive to become civilized. I dont think that will ever happen because at the moment we are hell bent on destroying ourselves, and will succeed in doing just that..

Yeah and all of that is driven by the human ego. Here's the thing. I'm not religious however I am a spiritual person and there is a difference. Religion shrinks your world. Spirituality expands your consciousness. I find science particularly astronomy to be humbling and spiritual. All of these endless cruelties and acts of violence are senseless. With this vantage point, I can actually see how juvenile and uneducated humans really are.

  • @dolphinsatsunset1

It would be just another matter at that point. Politics, economic doctrines, and other touchy issues all involve the ego. If 911 or the crusades didn't happen there would have been another war taking place of those. Humanity in general is screwed up. The only way to fix the problem is to stop being in denial, recognize our faults, and admit it, and fix it. We need to save our species before it's too late.

  • @halosnoopy
    @halosnoopy 11 років тому

911 or the Crusades wouldn't have happened, but that type of event would. We are fantastic at finding ways to hurt one another, and the kind of delusional person that thrives on these things would just find another excuse. Religion may be the cause of our current problems, but if it were to be destroyed we would just find something else. It is simply natural for us. We seem to require a constant state of hatred and conflict to survive, and that will eventually be our downfall.

you might want to read Richard Dawkins' "The God Delusion". As biting as the title is, the actual content is of Dawkins (he's a professor of evolutionary biology at Oxford) systematically addressing both the doctrines of the Christianity aswell as common arguments that try and defend them. Its strange though, personally, whenever i hear someone speaking about religion its always in a very dogmatic way (just basically screaming at the top of their lungs) but in his book Dawkins is just... calm(?)

As I hear the sound waves from the speakers in this computer, washing Carl Sagan's voice across my eardrums, I eat a cucumber. Atoms consuming atoms, cells consuming cells. To think that not only is this sustenance small, but that I am tiny, that the earth is but a dot, and that even our galaxy in all its vastness, is simply a dot, in the overwhelming superiority of the universe.

Carl Sagan's work always amazes me. He is one of the few people that could discuss the grand and infinite nature of the universe and the fleeting nature of time in a way that I can only describe as timeless. The clothes may be dated, and scientific discoveries cast more light in the darkness of ignorance, but I will be sure to share Carl Sagan's words with my children, and expect that this will be continued with their children. That is what I consider a healthy awareness of greater powers.

@razioth I agree. He's gone, but left us so much. I disagree that you ought to be ashamed. The strongest thing one can do is reveal themselves-hope, sadness, elation, empathy. It takes infinitely more strength, by gosh, to shed tears than to be a profile in stoicism. Be happy you're capable of feeling, and sharing that. :-)

:'( I still cry when I hear him speak about the Pale Blue Dot....its hard to contemplate how big the universe really is, but Mr Sagan was one of few who could....oh, he knew so much.....
He contributed so much to planetary science, and with his death, the world lost one of the most inspirational and smartest peeople.....RIP Mr Sagan.

Carl died when I myself was only 38 days old, and I did not discover he and his great works until many many years later. A true inspiration, genius I dare say. Though the earth is but an atom in contrast to the overwhelming gigantic size of the universe, it is the most important atom we have yet discovered, and we must preserve it, if we wish to live on.

@PoppinFreshMe. YOU should read some more Einstein. Einstein was definitely not religious in any sense that 99% of religious people would recognize. He used the word "God", but by that he meant the workings of physical reality in a very general sense.
By the way, how do you KNOW there's a universal energy? I'm curious.

@NihilistMachinery It's not contradictory. He's saying power is not important, but human kindness is. Those who try to rule the world do it in order to control an infinitesimally small fragment of the physical universe which they inhabit. They're egotistical beings who can't see beyond the illusions of their reality. Kindness and love transcend that.

I do that too. I'm quite fascinated with astronomy and even more intrigued with the idea of extraterrestrial life. There IS life on other planets (or even moons), maybe within our own galaxy, the trouble is pinpointing their exact location. I think this is the current big project for NASA right now. I would love to be apart of that.

And you're psychotic and need some serious help, if you are serious about that. Go to the store and buy some bread, peanut butter, and jelly or you can ask someone nicely and politely. Why would you want a fraction of a fraction of the universe to be in this state. What's wrong with peace?

I have mixed feelings hearing Sagan's words. It makes me happy that I am one of the smallest pieces in the universe, yet I can't help feel sad for what the earth has endured... And for what we do next, I hope we make it that far out to space someday... but not while going to space is a "race"

Hardly a week goes by that I don't revisit this video. It is so moving and really does put things into perspective. "Think of the rivers of blood spilled by all those generals and emperors, so that in glory and triumph, they could become the momentary masters of a fraction of a dot."

Being a male I'm ashamed to say that this video/speech literally makes me drop a couple of tears, but it's true, every time.
    Humanity misses Carl Sagan dearly.
(Notice how I didn't address this directly to him, since he can't see this, sadly he isn't anywhere at all anymore)

Almost brought tears to my eyes, which is the first time a video has done that. I'm thankful that such a man lived, and passed on his words of wisdom. I will strive to fill the void he has left in his death, and hopefully, give a fraction of what Carl's done to mankind.

I wonder what would happen if we met an aliens species and were able to comunicate with them. If we shared any gods or religous thoughts. How would the church handle this? Did God also create these aliens? If so, why do they not believe in God? Why didn't God give them the Bible too?

I love all of these Carl Sagan tribute videos but for some reason this one braught tears to my eyes like no other. I know its a complicated effort to get that reaction from an audience being an editor myself so cudos to whoever put this together. You should be proud.

At 14, i was paralyzed from the chest down by a dirtbike accident. When i didnt want to live any longer, it wasnt "God" that saved me, it was the notion that the only number we can come up with for the probability of life... Is 0. That we are so unimaginably lucky... Not chosen.

I agree with you. All I'm saying is violence is never the answer even for vengeful reasons. We all need to be more understanding, tolerant, patient, compassionate, and loving to one another. We need to fix this world before it's too late.

The reality of the stacked bodies is the message.
They will find out about atrocities some time in their future anyway. Just let them see it and be prepared to come with a good explanation for how people or groups can act sometimes.

It makes me so terribly terribly sad to know that I was unaware of this brilliant man while he was alive. I would have delighted in him as a child and young teen, I'm sure, and maybe I would have been able to shed the shackles of belief a decade sooner.

"technological adolescence" is one accurate term. We have left childhood with the embrace of knowledge, but have yet to leave the family nest and spread across the stars. But as for all troubled teens, the transition may be long and hard.

For the moment we are stuck together wither we like it or not so we might as well get along the best we can without killing each other.

Al gore quoted him and used the same picture in his film, but I thought he did it wrong, He said "that (the pale blue dot) is what is at stake".I was thinking, If it was just a small dot, then we don't need to care anymore.
