Download Empires & Puzzles here -> pixly.go2cloud.org/SH3p6 What's an abandoned video game franchise you'd like to see make a come back? Lemme know! WHAT UP! Three Videos in May? You'd best believe it. I think I like... a LOT of y'all are simply getting ready for the onslaught of dope games coming out in June, myself included, so I wanted to put out as much content as possible before then. There's like 4 different things I'm gonna lose all my life and time to, and hopefully we can connect on the other side. I'll see y'all next week with another video though. Big
I was going to say Rune Factory, as it honestly might be my favourite game franchise of all time and I thought it had been absent since 2012, only to discover I somehow missed an entry in 2021?! I don't know how that happened. But I'm buying a copy Monday.
I always think of Sly Cooper when I think of abandoned game series. Not only was the last game 10 years ago, it was also a controversial entry, and to top it of it ended on a cliffhanger. To add insult to injury the cliffhanger was suppose to resolved in DLC, that got canceled due to poor sales. But around that time a movie got announced, which also got canceled, but revived as tv show. But the show was suppose to come out in 2019 and we haven't heard anything since, not even an official cancelation.
What's sad is Thieves in Time was actually a pretty solid game. You could feel the studio actually understood Sly Cooper, unlike what happened with Jak and Daxter with The Lost Frontier, where the devs seemed to just want to attach Jak to their IP.
Oof for sure. Having missed these games as a kid, I was thrilled with the PS3 collection and I had no idea a forth game even existed for many years. Now it deals to late to go back.
Hopefully it’ll return someday. The first 2 sly cooper games are some of my all time favorites, Sony should really consider reviving the series or hell I’d even just take a collection on modern consoles. Last time they were compiled into a collection was for the ps3
What's odd is that now Sony seems to want to make a lot of show/movie adaptations based on their games, and we still have no info on the Sly show. Twisted Metal is getting a show and Gran Turismo a movie, both coming out this year.
I miss Ecco the Dolphin. Realistically the games are all relatively middling, the Genesis games in particular being incredibly difficult and having some bad ideas like "physics" puzzles involving pushing things around underwater, but thematically they're such interesting ideas, sci-fi games where you play a dolphin? Absolutely wild. And the soundtracks, complete killer all the way through.
Austin is the perfect person to listen to while mowing the lawn. I intentionally stockpile his videos in the watch later playlist over the winter so I have stuff to listen to
@@austineruption The problem is that now a days Marvel is giving to Capcom too much restrictions. It was Marvel's idea to not use the X-men characters for infinite because they were owned by Fox and Marvel didn't want to promote the X-men films and their was never little Capcom could do. While Disney does own Fox now, I think there might be some bad blood between Marvel and Capcom.
@@orangeslash1667 Umm... How did this comment go into talking about MvC ? Seriously though the dude behind that choice has been fired and now that Marvel owns the X-Men again I'm really hoping for a new MvC game, cause you have to admit both Marvel and Capcom dropped the ball on that game.
Man, F-Zero and Dino Crisis hurt me the most. They both have the potential to be big, notable franchises, but their respective companies kept them shelfed probably because of the mindset of "we already have a Mario Kart/Resident Evil."
Speaking of Jet Set Radio, this year is supposed to have us see Bomb Rush Cyberfunk's release. It's literally a new Jet Set Radio game with Hideki Naganuma doing the music. It's been being developed for ages. But it's coming and it's gonna be amazing fun.
@@TheMenarch It wasn't perfect but I'd call it good, yeah. My main issue was the difficulty, it's a bit too easy. Then it became too hard at the end but only because I stopped playing for a while and forgot the controls :p
Onimusha had a digital port on Switch, PS4, and PC a couple years back. Don't know how good that port did.... that may be why we haven't heard Capcom say anything about Onimusha lately.
@gamephreak5 Yeah, I bought it when it came out. I had heard that if it had done well, it might show capcom people were still interested in the series. A lot of why it hasn't been remastered allegedly has to do with Takeshi Kaneshiro image rights renegotiation. Maybe it sold poorly.
You know what’s crazy? 20 Years ago back in 2003 F-Zero GX, Kirby Air Ride and Mario Kart Double Dash all came out in that same year, Nintendo really put out 3 different kinds of racing games at the same time, I really miss the old experimental era of Nintendo. Also not only did Famicom Detective Club get revived on Switch but also Advance Wars Reboot Camp.
My go to “dead franchise” to talk with others is always No One Lives Forever. The story behind Nightdive trying to untangle the IP fuckery between corporations is just heartbreaking.
Don't forget that Dino Crisis 2 had a Pseudo-sequel for the PS2 called "Dino Stalker" which was based on RE Survivor series of games. This continued the Dino Crisis 2 story (Slightly) but was instead a very short, 20-40 minute long Arcade styled FPS.
Yeah i really wish they can at the very least remake the first 2 since the game engine for both games was the same as the one for the original resident evil game, which means they can easily adapt it using the same remake engine from the remake series.
I dearly miss the Ape Escape franchise. Back when the Spyro and Crash remake trilogies were announced, I really believed AE would get one as well. The last mainline game was AE3 in 2005, and last release was a PS Move rail shooter in 2010.
You can thank Sony for that. It seems they're only interested in making games with strong international appeal now so anime-ish games are probably never coming back
Pretty surprised you didn't mention Sly Cooper, not only was it a part of the trinity of PS2 classics alongside Jak and Ratchet, but arguably had the worst fate of all of them. Not only was the 4th and last game released back in 2013 and ended on a cliffhanger, but the DLC that was supposed to solve that ending was cancelled, the Sly movie was silently cancelled because of the Ratchet and Clank movie bombing, the Sly tv show ended up in development hell, there's no developer attached to a 5th game since Sucker Punch is busy with Ghost of Tsushima while Sanzaru was acquired by Meta so they can't work on it even thought they wanted to, and there's no sign of any plans with the franchise besides the cloud re-releases of the 4 games on PS5 so the franchise is kind of dead at this point, I will never give up hope on seeing my boy come back 😔
Not sure if it's the worst fate compared to other plataformers, although it is worse than jak and ratched for sure, because Rayman is in pretty much the same situation, last game in 2013, cliffhanger for a new game that never got anywhere, Rayman creator retired, company having no interest in doing anything with him besides being dlc in a rabbids game. and the Banjo-Kazooie franchise is in an even worse spot, no new game since 2008, cliffhanger since 2000, company not interested in doing a new game, probably not even getting a show, yeah, things are tough.
Skies of Arcadia is my all-time favorite JRPG and I would go to great lengths to witness a remastered or revamped version of it. It's deeply saddening to think that it may vanish with time and never see the light of day again.
It's really such a shame a game of that quality being treated like Panzer dragoon Saga or any of the other early Saturn games (yes I am aware of the GameCube Port but still...)
I think Parasite Eve could have been a great long running series if they did it right. No one lives forever for pc barely gets mentioned too. Would be great to see Sam Fisher come back for another splinter cell game too.
Mario & Luigi literally died alongside AlphaDream, so I'd say it qualifies. Same thing happened with De Blob & THQ, but THQNordic's re-releases gives me hope that it hasn't been completely forgotten.
I can see Nintendo bringing Mario and Luigi back with another studio sometime in the future. They really shouldn't have released those last 2 remakes on 3ds since it was pretty much dead by then and instead should've released them on Switch which would've done wonders!
Hell, Super Mario RPG itself, the game that started it all for Mario RPGs died when Square left Nintendo because they stuck to cartridges for the N64, yeah you could argue Paper Mario as being the spiritual successor but I consider them separate since SMRPG has its own Squaresoft Charm to it and Square has nothing to do with Paper Mario. Even these days SMRPG gets ignored by Nintendo and Square, it’s very telling how the game isn’t even on NSO yet or even better, has gotten a remake like Live A Live did last year.
@@brandonwilliams6119 I'm convinced the reason It's not on NSO is because Nintendo and Square are working on a remake since they've both been pretty close for a while now. Square literally releases more games and has more exclusives on Switch compared to Playstation no matter what all the misinformed gamers online think lol
Game Sack, Austin Eruption, and Matt Mcmuscles are the the trifecta of video game coverage, gamesack for 80's and 90's retro, Matt for more modern games, and Austin covering everything between, you just can't go wrong. IDk why you aren't sitting at a solid million subs but this is premium game content.
Completely agree. Always enjoy all their content, catching myself having a minor freak out any time Austin covers some franchise or series I had forgotten about in the late 90s.
Matt reviewing fighting games and dissing some Capcom games in their dark age era (the time when Capcom was on their lowest). Glad Capcom made it back now.
Always glad to see another Gamesack fan. Gamesack is one of my favorites. Joe deserves more subscribers. I would also add Civvie11 and Grimbeard to that list. Civvie11 for PC games/Boomer Shooters. He's seriously great. I only found him because Matt McMuscles recommended the channel. Grimbeard is a channel I found somewhat recently and he just kills it too. Some other great gaming related UA-camrs : SNESDrunk is also great for quick insightful reviews, does non SNES reviews too. Pandemonium Reviews sticks to reviewing every Saturn game but his videos are like documentaries and cover the development of the original games if they were a port to the system. He seriously puts in so much work and only has like 4 or 5k subscribers. His video on the awful Corpse Killer game was so informative compared to the likes of AVGN. You would think someone like James would be interested in the development of Corpse Killer as it was FMV and sho5 like a B movie but James is well... He doesn't really care about video games. Sega Lord X is also good for *mostly* SEGA discussion. Though he talks about other consoles and games. It's always cool to see the weird SEGA fanboys flip their shit when he releases a video talking about how much he loves the NES or something. "You're SegaLordX not NintendoLordX. I hate Nintendo REEEE !" Minimme is also a good reviewer who chooses the weirdest obscure games to talk about. RebelTaxi is also good when he covers video games. Edit : Oh. Also Big Ol Words. He covers only NES games but reminds me of how UA-cam uses to be. Pretty basics channel but he makes some funny jokes/critiques/observations. Almost reminds me of old AVGN without the fake anger or skits. Dude seems pretty chill in his streams too.
Hey Austin! I loved Lufia 2 as a kid, so I was really glad to hear you hype it! We rented it enough times that the cashier actually recognized me 🤣As far as games I miss, I can't imagine it ever coming back after the pandemic, but I'd kill for another entry in the Trauma Center series. Especially the latest entry, Trauma Team, which branched out from surgery to include more puzzle-styled precision in orthopedics, priority-based first response, and even visual novel segments in forensics and diagnostics. I loved the way Trauma Team used all these different disciplines to address different parts of the story, and how they all worked together. Even endoscopy managed to be interesting towards the end. It would be so cool to see them get the gang back together using the motion controls on the Switch.
I love Lufia aswell, I rented both 1 and 2 over and over as a young child in the 90s, but as much as I tried was never able to fully beat them in a weekend. I have both installed on my SNES mini and beat both of them for the first time this spring, was such a great feeling
interesting fun fact: Dino Crisis 3 was originally going to follow after the second game where the main protagonist enters a destroyed city filled with dinosaurs and involved destroyed buildings but when pre production was almost about to begin 9/11 happened which cause to scrap the original plot and then we got was 500 years into the future plot instead. I heard about that information thanks to matt mcmuscles what happened episode with Dino Crisis 3.
The fact Viva Pinata hasnt gotten a sequel is a crime with how great a game it was for just chilling and collecting pinatas. a 10/10 sim that deserves a sequel.
With how big farming sims are nowadays you would think Microsoft would jump on the opportunity to make a Viva Pinata 3, but it is a Rareware IP which apparently means Microsoft will never do anything with it.
Resistance, Killzone, FEAR, Otogi, Overlord, Condemned, Brothers in Arms, Lost Planet, Jedi Outcast and Republic Commando... dearest franchises of my childhood and youth. I know your creators and publishers abandoned and forgot you, but I still remember, I'm still waiting your triumphal come back. Till then, I will be always remember you, conservate in my videogames collection and replay you...
It's sad because you know a new F-Zero would be amazing and probably even sell well. It's said that the reason why they won't make a new one is because they can't think of a worthwhile innovation (read: gimmick) to warrant its development. But honestly, a new F-Zero game made for the current generation, many years later on the Switch, would be that great innovation in and of itself.
For me, it's a little spin-off series called MySims. You may have seen other UA-camrs shitting on it (I believe the most viewed MySims videos are of PeanutButterGamer ripping them apart), but I genuinely love the series with all my heart. Six games (and one DS app) released from 2007 to 2010, then it all abruptly came to a halt. I'd give anything for EA to bring it back but given how they're still in the business of murder (R.I.P. American McGee's Alice series), I won't hold my breath. I still find myself wishing for at least a remastered collection of all six titles every year around -E3- Summer Game Fest time.
Fun fact, I once traded a bunch of Pokemon cards for a rare bootleg copy of the Ecco the Dolphin soundtrack from the Sega CD version on vinyl. Can't talk about Ecco without talking about that amazing soundtrack
28 years since the last game and I'm still jonesing for another Gargoyle's Quest game. At this point, if I had the resources and talent, I'd just do it my own damn self.
The SEGA CD soundtrack for both Ecco titles were atmospheric af! Some dead franchises I'd love to see come back are Onimusha, Parasite Eve, Bushido Blade, Tenchu, Chrono, and Hunter: The Reckoning.
We actually almost got a new tenchu game. Sekiro was originally developed as a tenchu sequel, but Miyazaki felt it strayed too far from what tenchu was so he made it into sekiro instead.
Apparently a new Onimusha was a possibility a little while back, but it all hinged on the success of the first game's HD remaster. And yeah, it didn't sell very well. Imagine a new RE engine Onimusha game. Damn, it's a shame that isn't happening.
@@BurninBluber I know and it makes me sad! I even bought the HD remaster of the first game on all platforms haha! Even if sales were good enough ti warrant a sequel, getting remasters for 2 and 3 would be difficult for character likeness issues with Yūsaku Matsusa (Jubei) and Jean Reno (Jacques) unless they either pay both the Matsusa estate and Jean Reno.
I'm so glad someone else remembers Hunter:The reckoning. With how popular multiplayer is now, this game needs a revival. I wish Fighting Force and Evil Zone could get some love too
I know that Klonoa just got a compilation, but a new game would be awesome. There's a severe lack of 2.5D platformers. In the meantime, there's still a ton of handheld games that need to be brought back to the public. Same for Mr. Driller. I'd pay good money for a Dig-Dug/Mr. Driller compilation. As for a completely new game, I think Bonanza Bros. would work very well. Make it a GTA clone that's cartoonish and has that circular design.
I've worked at a local used game shop for over a decade and have only ever seen a single Sega Pico. Lady found it in her attic and wanted to give it to her grandkid but couldn't find any of the cables. Turns out the av and power cables are interchangeable with the Genesis. Had a Sonic educational game that looked like a book and was pretty neat if you consider when it came out. That was 6 years ago and I havent even heard of someone one seeing one since.
I did have one and had it for many years until a house fire that in my Master system were both smashed and destroyed!!! The Pico was basically for my sister. I tried the games. Very very basic
The Sega Pico was my first game console, and I didn't even know it at the time! Yeah, the games came on unique book-like cartridges where turning the pages moved you between different parts of the game. It was primarly aimed at extremely young children, so most of its "games" were moreso activity centers like you'd see on PC. Apparently it was way more popular in Japan, where it wasn't discontinued until 2005.
About F-Zero, My Head canon explanation is, Nintendo felt salty that Sega did a better job with their franchise than they did. But F-Zero 99 just came out of nowhere, maybe it's Nintendo testing the waters if there is enough interest for a new proper title.
I would personally love to see a Pilot Wings where they made it open world. Instead of the outdated "fly through rings| and not much else" gameplay you could actually flesh this out into a more Euro Truck Simluator style of gameplay where you could pick up missions and cart goods from A to B, earning money in which to buy and upgrade your vehicles of flight.
Honestly take kind of the framework of the open-world of legend of Zelda Totk, strip down all those kind of locations but keep the basic framework there and that would work wonderfully. Just explore. No goals, just enjoying
The only reason their dead: 1)the game company went out of Business. 2)nobody claimed the rights. 3)they are to stubborn to bring em Back. 4)did I ever tell you the game company went out of business? 5) ignoring their fans. 6) corporate greed.
The Versus series is actually my favorite series of all time. I just never considered it “dead” like Darkstalkers is. It’s sad to realize that… it basically is.
I'm planning to bring back Darkstalkers since Capcom reviving Mega Man and Devil May Cry with MM11 and DMC5 turned out perfect both critically and financially. It's been more than 25 years since Darkstalkers 3 released, so the time is now!
@@masterseal0418 the problem is that Tooty games are considered outdated nowadays. Unlike streetfighter, Darkstalkers is too difficult to translate well into 2d. The good news is that doc stockers what is a fake inspiration for skullgirls and blaze blue.
@@orangeslash1667 Poor grammar from ya, but I shouldn't give my hopes up too soon for my pitch(as SF6 worked amazingly in the RE Engine with the use of 2D). I mean, that's very hypocritical of you to say that '2D is outdated' and mention Skullgirls as well as Street Fighter afterwards.
Tatsunoko vs Capcom had one of the most rad intro tunes ever. Also the game was awesome, with the damage numbers starting in the billions and just getting more stupid.
Probably not, been hoping to see a final game since Defiance, but each year I got disappointed, sure there have been attempts and there's even a leaked video about Dead Sun a supposed reboot, but alas got canceled as everything else they attempted, so I highly doubt we see this franchise ever again, besides that some original voice actors have passed away since so yeah. Trust me, when you are hoping to see a new game since 2003 and gets disappointed year upon year you loose hope and eventually I don't really care anymore.
@@Casketkrusher_ sad but true. Hell I'd take ports of the old games to PS+ Premium at this point. I'll continue to hold out the slightest of hope for something in that series.
Oh boy Sega, you have killed so many of my favourites. I'd love to see Sega Rally, OutRun, After Burner, Crazy Taxi, Jet Grind Radio (as already mentioned), & even some older ones like Shinobi (as already mentioned), Comix Zone, Zaxxon, etc. etc. etc.
Good god, yes. The characters were so memorable and stories were well thought-out. They were beautiful classic games. They just don't make 'em like that anymore
I live in hope that one day we'll get a new Gravity Rush game, but I doubt we ever will. It was really interesting concept, but I don't think it sold terribly well. It was an 'anime-superhero' game where you control a female protagonist called Kat, and she didn't necessarily fly, more like she manipulated gravity to 'fall' in whatever direction you chose. She could also use that gravity manipulation to turn walls or ceilings into 'the floor', so the cities in the game were these super 3-dimensional places that could be explored in multiple ways. The world they created was beautiful and intriguing, and the main character was utterly adorable. The music also lives rent-free in my head to this day. It was fantastic! The first game was a PSP exclusive, that got a remastered version for the PS4, and later on got a sequel that added new powers and abilities, new cities, new gameplay systems and greatly expanded the story. Sadly though, it ended on a cliffhanger that left a lot of questions un-answered, and it doesn't look like we'll ever get a third game. I don't think the second game sold terribly well, and the studio behind it shut down soon after the game came out. The second game also had some minor online features like leader-boards and treasure hunts that no longer work because the servers were shut down about a year after launch. They actually postponed the server shutdown due to fan backlash and petitions, but it only bought about an extra 6 months of life. It's a sad end for an amazingly creative series. I also wish we could get another Saboteur game. It was like a cross between Assassins Creed and GTA, set in World War 2, Nazi-occupied Paris. Bloody great game, but again, the studio folded soon after release, and I think the IP got absorbed into EA, who aren't doing anything with it. Such a shame.
Saying this before I watch the video: As sad as it is to see F-Zero get seemingly abandoned, at least its last entry was GX (it ended on a high note) and the series itself isn’t forgotten (Captain Falcon being a Smash regular). The best way to put it is its better to not get a new entry and people wondering why not than it is to have a new entry and people saying why bother.
Captain Falcon is Nintendo's Morrigan :( Maybe one day, we'll get a rad Beat'em Up / Racing Game by Platinum Games where you can Falcon Punch people in 3D, maybe...
I personally would love to see more viva piñata. I played Pocket Paradise on the DS all the time as a kid, and my brother had it on his 360 and let me watch him play it once. I think the setting, characters, design, and even a decent amount of the mechanics are all pretty unique. Despite how much I enjoy it, though, I feel like Viva Piñata really couldn't come back (at least in the way pocket paradise was set up) because there wouldn't be much interest. It's a franchise not many people care about that was made for a pretty niche audience. It feels like a guaranteed financial flop, which is a shame because it means that it'll never get made because of that. Luckily, there are always indie games that fill the gardening game/animal collection void in my heart
I have strong hunch that Exoprimal was originally a Dino Crisis game, but Capcom rebranded it as a new IP because it strayed too far from the the series.
Sony has a wealth of abandoned franchises that had potential, it's a real disappointment that they abandoned their most creative IPs to become the "Hollywood" of video games with mainly realistic titles.
most developers/publishers have abandoned franchises with potential, but decided to stay with their risk-less cash cows instead and when they DO decide to revive at least one of them, shit backfires on them 90% of the time
@@joed5150 not true, as other well known publishers/devs have done this as well inbetween their bigger IPs ALTUS, NISA, Square-Enix and even Game Freak, just to name a few, tend to make such smaller games to fill the gaps between their major blockbusters most of them are successful enough to even get sequels, just NOT as successful as their cash cows of course lol
My favorite abandoned game series has to be Banjo-Kazooie because the last Banjo-Kazooie game to be released is Banjo-Kazooie Nuts and Bolts. That game come out in 2008
I was gonna say that one dead game I wanted to make a comeback was Dragon's Dogma, but then I remembered that it's getting a sequel! Capcom has been doing well reviving some older stuff. Maybe one day we could get a Dino Crisis 1 and 2 remake in the style of the Resident Evil remakes
one that really gets me is spyro other then Spyro Reignited Trilogy a remake of the old games it been dead since 2008 one of the biggest franchises when i was growing up and i think with a little of care it would control beautifully and i feel there is another master piece begging to be made from the franchise a bunch of younger games have never heard of the franchises which just shows how neglected it has gotten
Parasite Eve series perhaps and maybe a controversial one like Manhunt but one game I miss the most is the Burnout franchise and I don't include the Paradise remastered so technically it's been 15 years since a new one came out.
Motorstorm would be my addition to this video. I'm not a fan of racing games, but something about Motorstorm kept me coming back. I wish Sony would greenlight a new studio to revive the franchise.
There's quite a few franchises that I love which have been dormant for too long. And while some are just single games, seeing them return would be fantastic but sadly also unlikely. Those being God Hand, Gotcha Force, I-Ninja, Darkstalkers, Viewtiful Joe l, Rival Schools, Star Fox, F-Zero and Skies of Arcadia.
I'm pretty sure, though not certain, that Nintendo also owns the "Eternal Darkness" IP as well. I know Silicon Knights was a 2nd party studio back in the day before moving to MS & going defunct, but I think Nintendo still owns the franchise rights. Would really love to see them give the reigns to a partner studio to go crazy with a new entry! The insanity effects meant to mess with the actual player were really unique, and could be used in some amazing ways today. It'd probably blow up on streaming platforms too if they were creative enough with all the effects & get people interested. Other than that, Perfect Dark is still the series I want back the most. N64 PD had the best multiplayer options, and playing Halo/PD Zero never felt like they offered anything comparable. Excited to see the supposed "AAAA" reboot, but I have a feeling they're moving it to 3rd person instead of an FPS.
Well, now that Nintendo owns the Fatal Fame IP (I think...I'm still confused about that), they may think they don't need Eternal Darkness anymore because they now have a Japanese Horror franchise instead of a Western horror franchise.
@gamephreak5 I don't think they own Fatal Frame, as a PS5 & Xbox port of the Wii U game came out a year or so ago. Either way, I think Eternal Darkness is different enough & is also a beloved GC game that would surely get people excited
Shigeru himself said "They dunno how to innovate FZERO gameplay for a new game, unlike Pokemon 'n Mario Kart, Nintendo won't release some games unless they're something new
@@FeiFongWang I consider the franchise to be finished, in spite of whatever Konami thinks they're doing with it. Any game that is not approved by Kojima is not canon
Too bad Konami expelled him because he had many good ideas for the Metal gear franchise (the only game they developped without him was Metal gear survive and the reception was very bad).
Shinobi and Nightshade on the PS2 are still two of my favourite games of all time. Yeah, compared to other character action games like Devil May Cry and Ninja Gaiden they look dull, but while they're not a visual spectacle the gameplay was so unique and sweet that I can't belive no one has tryed to replicate it. For those that never played the Shinobi and Nightshade games, each fight acts like an arena, you progress through the level until you find a mob of enemies and your path becomes blocked by a barrier, so you have to kill the enemies to progress. While other character action games does the same thing, the gimmick here is that each enemy you kill strengthens your attacks, so much that for normal enemies your attacks become a single hit kill, and if you finish all the enemies in a straight combo you get a cool animation like on those old samurai movies that, while the protagonist strikes a pose, all the enemies explode on geisers of blood. You can even finish bosses that way, killing the mobs before focusing on them and finishing the fight on a single combo. I really wish this kind of game returned in a new Shinobi or even a complete new IP that just wish to recreate this unique style.
For everyone who wants old games to come back there is another who thinks we need more new IPs/original games cause they think the gaming industry is overcrowded with re releases and remasters.
Lufia was fantastic. If I'm not mistaken, it was one of the first RPGs that when you finished killing a monster, it didn't default over to the next monster on the list. Meaning you really had to understand the damage of your attacks / spells or you'll be getting misses since you're attacking nothing.
Agghh, Tomba, why can't we get a proper sequel to the first game? Both Tomba! 1 & 2 are amazing games in their own way, but the first one is so special, so unique in gameplay, physics, attacks, quests, items, graphics, setting, everything is fun. I never understood why the other kids at school didn't love it as much as I did. And going crazy in that game with a Game Shark is one of my most nostalgic memories, my first real experience totally breaking a game. Sadly, we might be adding Beyond Good and Evil to this list. Who knows if the sequel will ever come out, and is it really gonna be a game for us fans of the original? Taking pictures of all the wildlife, exploring the open world, the weird vibe of the universe, I imagine it's a really hard game to make a sequel to BG&E. I hope Ganbare Goemon isn't abandoned, at least give us a compilation of all the games we didn't get English ports of in the West. Ganbare Goemon 2-4 on Super Famicom are all really good, the Game Boy Color Goemon Dynamite game is impressive, and the 3D platformers on PS1 and PS2 are fun for fans of the series. But the three 2D PS1 Goemon platformers are my pick for desperately needing an English translation. They are probably the best Goemon games to exist, and nobody knows about them. Play them any way u can, especially Oedodaikaiten(no guide needed) and Uchuu Kaizoku Akogingu(translation needed to progress in game).
Absolutely down with a part 2, this was a treat! Main ones that come to mind off the top of my head are the Final Fantasy Tactics games, Parasite Eve, Ape Escape and my most missed series, Dark Cloud.
The big cutoff point for a lot of these series was the seventh generation of consoles, when everyone began to focus more on graphical quality and budgets started to balloon. During the PS2/Xbox/Gamecube era (and this includes PC games), companies still made weird shit, spin-offs, experimental stuff, whatever, and even if they didn't sell blockbuster numbers they could still be successful.
When it comes to RTS games, my favorites were always Tzar and Empire Earth. I bet most people haven't even heard of at least one of the two. Also, I'm really sad that Shenmue 3 didn't do very well because I've always been very invested in the storyline, and I would love to see it brought to its natural conclusion. We need a Shenmue movie or something.
Shenmue 1 & 2 was one of my greatest experiences in gaming. And I’ve been gaming since the Atari 2600 days. Shenmue 3 didn’t cut it for me. It was bigger but it wasn’t better. Exploration just wasn’t near as fun and neither was anything else.
@@AngryCalvin I agree that 3 wasn't as good by a pretty long stretch, but the story is one I still want to see a conclusion to. It's just a shame that the 3rd game's lower quality was pretty much served as the series' tombstone.
You should know, I love the background music editing in your videos. The selection of tracks that are featured in your Dino section particularly slap! 🖤
I think my big impossible wants at this point are legacy of kain and sly cooper. I know Eidos ip's have been shuffled about and the current holders have talked about revitalizing Kain, but picking up a continuing saga 17+ years later is a big ask for an audience, writer, and studio Sly cooper, meanwhile, is just not mature games for mature gamers enough for suckerpunch these days I think.
Particularly something as deep as Legacy of Kain, I can't imagine how lost people would be if they jumped in a sequel to Defiance. But I'll still hold on to this bittersweet illusion.
Wow, lots of people are asking for Sly Cooper here on the comments, if there's so much demand, than Sony is definetly really dumb for not wanting to make a new Sly Cooper game.
Austin, i really don't know how you don't have a million subscribers. Very few content creators put the quality into their videos that you do. Ive been watching you for years and always look forward to a new video from you
Ace Attorney is definitely abandoned, with DGS2, the series latest release, only receiving a remaster in the form of The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles. Unfortunately, the latest story to have ever been conceived was Spirit of Justice, putting Ace Attorney in the realm of a Star Fox Zero length hiatus.
As scared I am that the Vs series as a whole is killed by Infinite, I also wonder about wacky vs ideas like instead of Marvel, it's Marvelous vs Capcom
The Sega Genesis 6-Pak game is the reason I ever played Shinobi, Streets of Rage, or Golden Axe. Shinobi was way too hard for me as a kid but my brother and I grinded out Golden Axe until we beat it and it took AGES. I still maintain that Columns had better music than Tetris, and Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine had even better music than Columns, and I'll die on that green hill zone.
nice to see crimson skies pop up, that was one my highschool group of friends would frequently include in our rotation in gaming nights alongside halo/timesplitters/burnout etc
it's funny you bring up Suikoden Tierkreis, cause for all its terrible implementation of voice dubbing, I actually really enjoyed it and it made me check out the other Suikoden games haha.
God damn... Core memory unlocked lol, i completely forgot about pilot wings 64. I used to play the fuck out of that game with my dad, or even just by myself.
I never understood calling a franchise dead because it hasn't had recent releases. Isnt it possible that the franchise is just over? Just because franchuses like Far Cry and Call of Duty keep coming out with worse and worse games doesnt mean that its a bad thing that there are only 3 Dark Souls games.
I miss Ecco. I do still play the classics from time to time just as a reminder that games can absolutely be an absolute nightmare to play just because they're hard. I was actually at a con a couple of weeks ago and they had an area for retrogaming, so I jumped on Ecco since everyone was playing sonic at the time (I also love sonic but.... I play that a lot). This led to a rather large number of kids getting mesmerised with me flying through these colourful stages and want to play it themselves. HAHAHAHAHA.
I appreciate all the Starcraft (and SC64) nods in this video. You should definitely directly tackle Starcraft someday. I know I will be making videos about it (the beta, development, esports, and custom games scenes respectively)
Rockstar's Bully never getting a proper sequel is one of the biggest missed opportunities in gaming. The only game that actually made the fantasy of going to a Prestige Private School and dealing with all of the Classic cliques in High School culture from the Jocks/Bullies/Nerds/Preppies/Greasers and the amount of potential left on the floor for a next Generation version of this Series is such a Heartbroken promise in Gaming History.
I’d love to see an HD remaster of Bully for the Switch using the Wii version of the game as the base but there’s new content and fixed bugs and glitches and the option to turn off motion control and use buttons to play the game. I’ve always had some difficulty with the motion controls in the Wii port of the game.
Hey Austin, first and foremost, thanks for the great videos! Really enjoy your work and the unique takes. However, for this one, I figured I'd offer a counterpoint. Most of us don't have the time to literally plow through games like most of you fine UA-camrs. It's a miracle if we ever even finish a franchise (looking at you Souls). With that in mind, it's actually nice to know something has a finish or formal close. In a world constantly churning volume over quality, I actually appreciate when a good thing ends instead of turning sour (like your latest vid on remakes). For most of us, a few great games are better than dozens of sub-par ones. Cheers!
One franchise that i've been missing for sure is Custom Robo But that series most likely is also dead and gone by now with the last title being released in 2006 iirc It is a big shame because being able to build a little robot guy with little robot guy weapons to fight other little robot guys was fun And the idea would most likely still hold up quite well today
There's been some attempts at the Custom Robo Style. Battlecore Robots is the latest from what I've seen. Very Custom Robo in all but name. Synaptic Drive was another.

What's an abandoned video game franchise you'd like to see make a come back? Lemme know!
Big
Gradius.
I'd sell my left kidney for a new Phantom Crash game. There's nothing else quite like it.
I was going to say Rune Factory, as it honestly might be my favourite game franchise of all time and I thought it had been absent since 2012, only to discover I somehow missed an entry in 2021?!
I don't know how that happened. But I'm buying a copy Monday.
Senran Kagura
MegaMan StarForce
Medabots
Luminous Arc
God Eater
Muramasa Demon Blade
Spectrobes
F ZERO ... why and how did it get abandoned? if they made it a little less difficult and made some innovations it would sell A LOT.
@@ty_sylicus it’s never too late.
And don’t even get me started on the CD soundtrack for Ecco 1 and 2. That’s one of the best game soundtracks of all time.
Austin is the perfect person to listen to while mowing the lawn. I intentionally stockpile his videos in the watch later playlist over the winter so I have stuff to listen to
This might be one of my favorite comments I've ever gotten. ENJOY SUMMER THOUGH

I agree!! Austin has a pretty cool narration, I usually listen to these videos while drawing or doing stuff
Man, F-Zero and Dino Crisis hurt me the most. They both have the potential to be big, notable franchises, but their respective companies kept them shelfed probably because of the mindset of "we already have a Mario Kart/Resident Evil."
😭😭😭
@@AC-hj9tv I recommend readout 2 and fast fmx as F0 successors.

My game collection feels like a jrpg franchise orphanage at this point
Yep, so many JRPG series died especially during the PS2 to PS3 transition era. The ones I miss the most are Wild Arms, Lunar and Grandia
Amazing comment
Speaking of Jet Set Radio, this year is supposed to have us see Bomb Rush Cyberfunk's release. It's literally a new Jet Set Radio game with Hideki Naganuma doing the music. It's been being developed for ages. But it's coming and it's gonna be amazing fun.
While we wait, Hover: Revolt of Gamers is a pretty good game as well, and once again, Naganuma worked on some of the OST.
@@JohnBLZ Wait Hover was good? I remember it being pretty empty with little to do. May have to give it another shot.
@@TheMenarch It wasn't perfect but I'd call it good, yeah. My main issue was the difficulty, it's a bit too easy. Then it became too hard at the end but only because I stopped playing for a while and forgot the controls :p

I don't know if you've spoken about it before but Onimusha is definitely a forgotten franchise that needs a return
Onimusha had a digital port on Switch, PS4, and PC a couple years back. Don't know how good that port did.... that may be why we haven't heard Capcom say anything about Onimusha lately.
That damn cliffhanger at the end of the third game, f-f-f-f-fuuuuuu--
@gamephreak5 Yeah, I bought it when it came out. I had heard that if it had done well, it might show capcom people were still interested in the series. A lot of why it hasn't been remastered allegedly has to do with Takeshi Kaneshiro image rights renegotiation. Maybe it sold poorly.
@@chrisrivers4560 fun fact:onimusha was a big inspiration for god of war, and resident evil four.

Yeppers I loved NOLF. Katie Archer is a real hottie. Those games had a genuine sense of humor to them. Perfect fodder for the spy crowd.
Not only was the 4th and last game released back in 2013 and ended on a cliffhanger, but the DLC that was supposed to solve that ending was cancelled, the Sly movie was silently cancelled because of the Ratchet and Clank movie bombing, the Sly tv show ended up in development hell, there's no developer attached to a 5th game since Sucker Punch is busy with Ghost of Tsushima while Sanzaru was acquired by Meta so they can't work on it even thought they wanted to, and there's no sign of any plans with the franchise besides the cloud re-releases of the 4 games on PS5 so the franchise is kind of dead at this point, I will never give up hope on seeing my boy come back 😔
I found a copy of the PS3 HD collection at my local game store a while ago, and am looking forward to discovering what the hype's about!
I consider the Sly series a masterpiece !
It will definitely get a remaster within the next few years. I sold my original copy of it - that's how certain I am.
I think Parasite Eve could have been a great long running series if they did it right. No one lives forever for pc barely gets mentioned too. Would be great to see Sam Fisher come back for another splinter cell game too.
Nightdive tried to re release nolf but they decided it was too much of a rights headache to sort out the rights dealings.
The back story of what inspired Ecco is really tragic. It's inspired by a poor dolphin who got mistreated for pretty much his entire life.
Would love another Condemned game. That's a pretty unique pair of games imo. Slow paced first person melee combat isn't something you see very often.
Bloodshot needs to be Backwards Compatible (& available digitally)
Mario & Luigi literally died alongside AlphaDream, so I'd say it qualifies. Same thing happened with De Blob & THQ, but THQNordic's re-releases gives me hope that it hasn't been completely forgotten.
I can see Nintendo bringing Mario and Luigi back with another studio sometime in the future. They really shouldn't have released those last 2 remakes on 3ds since it was pretty much dead by then and instead should've released them on Switch which would've done wonders!
And bring some of the original team back.
doubt Nintendo will ever do anything about it
Hell, Super Mario RPG itself, the game that started it all for Mario RPGs died when Square left Nintendo because they stuck to cartridges for the N64, yeah you could argue Paper Mario as being the spiritual successor but I consider them separate since SMRPG has its own Squaresoft Charm to it and Square has nothing to do with Paper Mario.
Was super stoked to see Dark Cloud on here. LOVE that series and wish they’d make a new one with modern graphics and RPG elements.

Civvie11 for PC games/Boomer Shooters. He's seriously great. I only found him because Matt McMuscles recommended the channel. Grimbeard is a channel I found somewhat recently and he just kills it too.
Some other great gaming related UA-camrs :
SNESDrunk is also great for quick insightful reviews, does non SNES reviews too.
I hate Nintendo REEEE !"
Minimme is also a good reviewer who chooses the weirdest obscure games to talk about.

Viva Piñata has two sequels - but saying that, there hasn’t been a new release since 2008

F-Zero needs a come back so the world can be in peace again
It's sad because you know a new F-Zero would be amazing and probably even sell well. It's said that the reason why they won't make a new one is because they can't think of a worthwhile innovation (read: gimmick) to warrant its development. But honestly, a new F-Zero game made for the current generation, many years later on the Switch, would be that great innovation in and of itself.
@@GloriousGandalf I recommend red out 2 and fast FMx as f zero successors.
Can't talk about Ecco without talking about that amazing soundtrack
sounds like a decent deal i guess.
Ah yes, the version by Richard Jacques. He also did the soundtrack for Sonic R and several other Sega games in the 90s.
Kiai Resonance is kind of the same style as Bushido Blade.
Bonanza Bros, such a classic. i hope Sega can remake the old one or release a new game.

Next spring on PS5 and PS4
Captain Falcon is Nintendo's Morrigan :(
Maybe one day, we'll get a rad Beat'em Up / Racing Game by Platinum Games where you can Falcon Punch people in 3D, maybe...
Incorrect, GP legend and Climax both came out after GX
@@michaelriverside1139 there’s fast, FMX and redout two as successors to F0.
Greg mails. The creator of viva piñata is making an open world game called Everwilde.
I have strong hunch that Exoprimal was originally a Dino Crisis game, but Capcom rebranded it as a new IP because it strayed too far from the the series.
Shinobi and jet set radio games are coming
Sony has a wealth of abandoned franchises that had potential, it's a real disappointment that they abandoned their most creative IPs to become the "Hollywood" of video games with mainly realistic titles.
most developers/publishers have abandoned franchises with potential, but decided to stay with their risk-less cash cows instead
and when they DO decide to revive at least one of them, shit backfires on them 90% of the time
Nintendo is basically the only major publisher/dev that still regularly puts out smaller mid sized games and not just focus on their huge IP's
@@joed5150 not true, as other well known publishers/devs have done this as well inbetween their bigger IPs
ALTUS, NISA, Square-Enix and even Game Freak, just to name a few, tend to make such smaller games to fill the gaps between their major blockbusters
most of them are successful enough to even get sequels, just NOT as successful as their cash cows of course lol
My childhood friend had a Sega Pico and I recall us both wondering wtf the point of it was then at the age of 9.
My favorite abandoned game series has to be Banjo-Kazooie because the last Banjo-Kazooie game to be released is Banjo-Kazooie Nuts and Bolts. That game come out in 2008
I recommend Hat in time and demon turf, neon splash for Banjo successors.
Manhunt...1&2
I know they can't make another after 2 in the world we live in..
But I wish they did
one that really gets me is spyro other then Spyro Reignited Trilogy a remake of the old games it been dead since 2008 one of the biggest franchises when i was growing up and i think with a little of care it would control beautifully and i feel there is another master piece begging to be made from the franchise a bunch of younger games have never heard of the franchises which just shows how neglected it has gotten
You never run out of interesting topics, Austin. Love watching your videos whenever I'm taking a breather.
I wish The Suffering franchise would get a remake.
honestly for me i'd love nothing more than the Shadow Hearts series to get some sort of revival, it's an awesome horror themed RPG series
look up Penny Blood, it's what you're looking for
Parasite Eve series perhaps and maybe a controversial one like Manhunt but one game I miss the most is the Burnout franchise and I don't include the Paradise remastered so technically it's been 15 years since a new one came out.
The ending scene for C&C 4 is truly *WTF* 💩
Motorstorm would be my addition to this video.
I'm not a fan of racing games, but something about Motorstorm kept me coming back. I wish Sony would greenlight a new studio to revive the franchise.
Tomba/Tombi is a game I probably bring up every conversation I have about games, would love a remaster, whoopeecamp made a masterpiece
I'd really prefer it if it'd be remastered
@@drinkinouttacups2665 That can't happen because Whoopeecamp is now defunct.
Man, Crimson skies would be neat to come back!
Other personal picks would be dark cloud, power stone, ape escape, blinx, gex, & bloody roar.
Hey man, really appreciate the videos lately! Keep up the great work, been around since boku no eruption great to see you still doing work
I'm pretty sure, though not certain, that Nintendo also owns the "Eternal Darkness" IP as well.
Nintendo did lost the rights to Custom Robo. if i know correctly. so... i wonder what will happen with that.
@@gamephreak5 I recommend evil tonight, it’s basically resident evil from a top down perspective.
Shigeru himself said "They dunno how to innovate FZERO gameplay for a new game, unlike Pokemon 'n Mario Kart, Nintendo won't release some games unless they're something new
Would love to see a video on franchises that are not abandoned, but completed (like Batman Arkham and Metal Gear)
I don't believe for a second Konami will just leave Metal Gear after the remake lol
@@badasahog I recommend volume, it’s like metal gear from a top down perspective.
tbf some franchises aren't considered dead and buried... like F-Zero, Nintendo has said that they're waiting for the right pitch to come in.
My love for Gex is absolute. I really think his whole shtick would thrive so well with meme culture and whatnot. NODDERS
I feel like Deadpool scratches that humor itch so well that gex would be hard to do without feeling like "we have Deadpool at home"
No leave that in the 90s!!!
Most early RPGs did that.
I know for sure the first Final Fantasy did too. I loved Lufia when I was younger.
Parasite Eve seems like a franchise that could be hugely popular today.
Absolutely down with a part 2, this was a treat! Main ones that come to mind off the top of my head are the Final Fantasy Tactics games, Parasite Eve, Ape Escape and my most missed series, Dark Cloud.
Still waiting for another Earthbound/Mother game. Still mad that last one was only released in Japan
Ape Escape needs to come back.
Crimison Skies is definitely a classic on my list i use to play the hell out of that
The big cutoff point for a lot of these series was the seventh generation of consoles, when everyone began to focus more on graphical quality and budgets started to balloon.
I loved Empire Earth, and I actually enjoyed the sequel a fair bit. The third game we might as well pretend doesn't exist 😂
@@Spoonsire I had completely forgotten there was a third one anyway lol
We desperately need a new Jak and Daxter or Sly Cooper... Im still praying for it to happen daily
They ruined Jak & Daxter with Jak 2. Way too big of a genre change, it alienated me completely
This video concept is like a car wreck - sure it's sad but, I can't take my eyes away.
I think my big impossible wants at this point are legacy of kain and sly cooper.
I know Eidos ip's have been shuffled about and the current holders have talked about revitalizing Kain, but picking up a continuing saga 17+ years later is a big ask for an audience, writer, and studio
Sly cooper, meanwhile, is just not mature games for mature gamers enough for suckerpunch these days I think.
I remember when seaman came out there was so much paranoia about how weird and creepy it was
Austin, i really don't know how you don't have a million subscribers.
Thank you for all of the hard work and giving some of the best content on YT 🙏 We love ya Austin!
Grabbing hidden remotes while hearing PG innuendo in Gex will always be my happy place.
YES MORE AUSTIN!!
nice to see crimson skies pop up, that was one my highschool group of friends would frequently include in our rotation in gaming nights alongside halo/timesplitters/burnout etc
it's funny you bring up Suikoden Tierkreis, cause for all its terrible implementation of voice dubbing, I actually really enjoyed it and it made me check out the other Suikoden games haha.
God damn... Core memory unlocked lol, i completely forgot about pilot wings 64. I used to play the fuck out of that game with my dad, or even just by myself.
Austin keeps on cooking some great content!
Cheers!
One franchise that i've been missing for sure is Custom Robo
But that series most likely is also dead and gone by now with the last title being released in 2006 iirc
It is a big shame because being able to build a little robot guy with little robot guy weapons to fight other little robot guys was fun
And the idea would most likely still hold up quite well today
There's been some attempts at the Custom Robo Style. Battlecore Robots is the latest from what I've seen. Very Custom Robo in all but name. Synaptic Drive was another.
