  • In today's episode, we visit the school of Hu Zheng Sheng, who gives us an insightful introduction to Shaolin Kung Fu, both past and present. This is part 1 of 2, the second part will focus on Xinyiba, which is his speciality. A big thanks to Ranton for the shout out in his Real Shaolin Disciple Reacts to BBC Documentary vid!
    In this series, I visit the Shaolin Temple, and seek out masters of the old styles of Shaolin Kung Fu in Dengfeng and the villages in the surrounding mountains. I'm teaming up with Tomas from Real Shaolin Legacy and Joel from Shaolin Xinyiba, so check out their channels below too.

    Followed Ranton’s trail.
    I like the idea of carrying a heavy load to start (like, literally carrying weights as part of training). Then, as you progress on your training, you shed those weights and your load becomes lighter, both to your body (via the strength you’ve gain and the weight you no longer need); and mind (by casting away those things you no longer need).

    • @MonkeyStealsPeach
      @MonkeyStealsPeach  4 роки тому +12

      well he was using a metaphore about reducing your training down to the bare essentials, not literally carrying weights.

      @@MonkeyStealsPeach Yes, increasing specificity over time to spend the most effort on the most relevant things. As a beginner a wide range of basic activities are used, as the practitioner progresses and masters basic concepts, they then focus on nuance. A great example of this was Bulgarian weightlifting in the 80s and 90s, where once an athlete reached the international level, they pared down their training to just heavy singles in the competition lifts, and squats. Every day, multiple times a day. And they became the best the world has ever seen. Problems arise when amateurs are inspired by this approach and end up injured and never progressing. Because they never built that base experience under a professional eye.

      that's really interesting! And yes... in martial arts too, you see the highest level masters talking about "one posture containing the entire system" or whatever, but people forget that that is built upon the foundation of knowing the entire system first. If you just train these one or two moves without having gone through the whole process first you will have nothing

      This can be applied to everything. It is not only traditional martial arts that do suffer from it, but every art form too. Now many good artists are struggling to survive and have to put art aside and work a dumb job to fulfill life needs. Very very good video.
      I also love the aspect of old and new. How young people nowadays are willing to share their knowledge and older people do not want that much due to their conservative ways of thinking.

      @@MonkeyStealsPeach I'm under the impression the common knowledge about Shaolin Temple is still what the TV series "Kung Fu" (D.Carradine) let us believe about it. That the monks developed their martial art techniques purely out of animal observations. When I realised (most notably through Johnathan Barbary's blog -in French-) that most martial art techniques came into Shaolin through retired soldiers, it made much more sense. I mean, for non-blood-shedding monks, learning dao techniques seem weird, even though they are most renowned for their staff. I believe it to be the same with Japanese warrior monks (who are also Buddhist monks), i.e. retired military personnel (to use a modern term) that didn't become priests but as lay brothers, put their previous trade to "better" use by protecting the rich temples.

    • @MonkeyStealsPeach
      @MonkeyStealsPeach  5 років тому +11

      Buddhist temples in China were not too different from Christian monasteries in Europe. Lots of corruption, political affiliations and twisting the religion to justify their actions. The monks of Shaolin took part in several military campaigns in China.... so hardly pacifists. It was common not just for retired military, but also for criminals to take refuge as monks... like medieval Europe, sanctuary meant avoiding punishment.

    Came here through a link from Ranton. You have amazing Chinese :) Really enjoyed this interview and overview so much. The heart and soul of original Chinese essence is a bit lost. It's really refreshing to listen to someone like Master Hu share his views. Preserving the traditional ways isn't easy in today's world where flashy is what captures people's attention rather than the heart of something which can't easily be grasped unless one slows down. Shaolin Kungfu to me was more well known for war and battle rather than spirituality. I see Wudang Shan as more the spiritual heart of China rooted in Tao and Taichi. At the end of the day, it's what it means to the individual. Really wish Master Hu luck in preserving of the traditional, it's important. Will definitely watch more of your videos, thank you for taking time to make and share them.

    I don't know how much they should focus on getting kids to learn martial arts. Of course it's important and good to learn from a very young age, but times have changed, as he said. The "westerners" are more of a success story because they are not kids.
    I did some Tae Kwon Do for a few years as a kid, I got bored, I stopped. Now I'm 28 and I'm checking these videos. I have something in mind, something I'm looking for, or something I want to achieve. I think it's the first time in ~20 years I want to start a martial art (although, I do have some anger issues, and I have put it off in the past because of that). I don't expect a little kid to have drive like that. Frankly I cannot fully understand how they did it back in the day.
    Times have changed, as he said, and documenting should come first. The means to do it are here. The social problem is something more difficult to solve, and nigh impossible for an individual (or two).
