@@Spicystachegamer I believe the reason for the plentiful text removal is that 4Kids when ever possible bought the internationalist publication rights to the series that were dubbing and so forced every other country that wanted to make a dub to base it on there version and in order to make it an easier sell to non English speaking counties did there remove the language

Animator, "...Why do we need to remove the tex..." 4Kids, "GET OUT!" Animator, "W-What?!" 4Kids, "We can't have kids reading! What good are cartoons if kids could just stare in the background?"
We need a sonic x Kai of sorts. It could keep the Japanese ost, billboard text, and proper text translations for signs and such, but keeps the swears and sex jokes censored, as sonic is still a kids franchise, which could be very jarring to most people.
I remember hearing the reason why all the text is removed is because 4Kids sells their license to other countries and so they don't want anyone to be confused.
Some of these I can understand, even if I disagree with a lot of it. I don't understand why they felt the need to remove literally any text they could find.
10:33 It's not actually weird, this is one of the animation principles called squash and stretch! Sonic in this shot is stretching, so the animators exaggerate his movement to stretch out. To balance this when as he hits the ground he also squashes! It is also mixed with anticipation. This is not an error.
Being successful doesn't automatically dispel being controversial. (See: The richest people in the world, companies, politicians, etc.) With Sonic in particular, it's moreso the general perception of the brand by the wider Internet. Seeing it as really something of an incoherent joke. Although that opinion isn't as prevalent as it used to be.
The saddest thing about the audio changes is that the final hazard bio lizard fight is generic sonic X music for the English but Japan got live and learn
6:53 That's a parody of Dunlop tires which also might be why it was removed. I don't think it would cause a legal issue with how different it is but they might not have still not wanted to reference real brands.
I feel like you forgot to mention how in the Japanese version, Eggman's robots are just called "E-whatever", while in the English dub all of Eggman's robots save the E-90 have creative names.
HOODZ: This was a great look into the changes 4Kids made. However, some of the text and image edits I don't think were the doing of 4Kids. The Japanese episodes I saw on Hulu also had text removed, yet still left in some things 4Kids DID change. So I think TMS provided masters with no text so the dubbers could add in their own more easily. The problem is that most of the time, 4Kids did nothing and it lead to some awkward moments in the dub. Anyway, great video, left a like and we will subscribe to you as well.
He would probably try to shoot Sonic for congratulating himself over his friends and rivals when they were (wrongfully) upset with him as if he were mean to them (re: Knuckles like in episodes 5, 11 & 41)?
12:02 "We cordially invites you" is Engrish, but 4kids could've just blanked out the s in "invites" and it would've been fine Edit: Actually, I guess there's other issues with it
I grew up watching the latin spanish dub of Sonic X in Mexico, and I loved it but I honestly cannot go back to it or the 4kids dub once I saw the superior japanese version. I love Sonic X and the story it tries to tell with these characters.
Stuff like crude language, violence and suggestive content appear to be typically accepted/standard in Japanese kids television. That probably explains the rather adult stuff in the original Japanese dub. It’s still kinda weird that they did that weird seduction joke with Cream in that baseball episode though.
@David Silverman Ouch yeah thats a no for me. That was kinda weird to say the least. I dont mind off color jokes here as long as its sparce and not spammed every 2 seconds.
I'm just gonna copy here what I wrote on a similar comment: yes, she's flirting with a robot (and it was done as a joke or game strategy, not for real), but what exactly about that was in any way "weird" or "lewd"? The close up of her mouth, her big eyes? Really I can't understand. She wasn't even being sexual, from what I got she just told the robot it's "cute", something a 6-year-old could definitely do.
There's a very minor but noticeable edit in episode 3. In the JP version during the scene where the police get beaten by Eggman and tell them their leader is the president, one of the policemen has a burn hole in the back of his pants which was covered up in the English release.
I always thought Knuckles' line from the beginning of Episode 1 that 'it used to be Chaos Control' was an implication that something interfered with the initiation of Chaos Control causing the built up energy to do something other than what it's supposed to do. I never got the impression that it was a misuse of the term.
Honestly, I thought he was saying that the explosion thing was chaos control, which would have made sense had he not said “it used to be”. That part confused me
You also forgot to point out during episode 5 that in the Japanese version when Amy smacks the robot from the inside it shows her panties but in the Dub it replaced it with shocking flash around the room INCLUDING to cover you know what! Lol
Japanese titles: *Are long* English titles: The japanese titles are to long, let's make em' shorter. Ah yes, 4Kids making as much sense as always. At least they kept the guns and didn't turn them into finger guns like they did in Yu-Gi-Oh XD
I use to watch "Sonic X" when I was a Kid, but now Growing up and watching it again as an Adult, I can see why this Show has so much Negativity over the Years, it's probably because of the Terrible Voice Acting (except for Jason Griffith, Dan Green and Mike Pollen, they were Okay), the annoying Original Trumpet Music that plays every 5 Seconds (makes Squidward's Claranet Musics look like a Masterpiece) and the messy Censorship. Edit: Everything 4Kids has done they always Butcherd the original Japanese Content, I'm so very Glad they went out of Buissness.
I think when they talk about “chaos control” with the eggman base I think it’s referring to the light coming out of the base. I mean knuckles does guard the emerald so I think he would def know about chaos and what you can do with the emeralds. So when Amy asks “what’s that” when a giant light is coming from the base it makes more sense for knuckles to say “it used to be chaos control” as in chaos control went haywire and kinda teleported everyone instead of just sonic.
Just cannot believe that Sonic X ended on reruns in broadcast television on the last day of CW's VORTEXX block one month before Sonic Boom's first episode premiered on Cartoon Network a cable channel.
Thanks! I Really appreciate you doing these videos, Sonic X was my introduction to Sonic back in 2009 when I was 8, and Sonic X was among my earliest anime shows that I’ve watched. Then I remembered a couple years latter around 2011 or 2012 that I then discovered the Japanese dub, and I realized several differences such as the openings, the endings, the eye catchers, scenes that where a few seconds longer, as well as lines that where a bit different. Though I didn’t realized that they change the bullet sounds or that a lot of english text where removed or that there where a lot more scenes where shorten. I guess because it felt so ordinary to me, that I didn’t really noticed it.
OTA is not always public TV. Public TV is a station or network mostly focused on educational programming without profit. Sonic X was broadcast on commercial stations, mostly Fox affiliates. It wasn't aired on PBS and in some countries it didn't even leave pay TV (in Mexico, the Azteca 7 network only played it for 2 weeks). Also, TMS is a Sega company, they didn't partner. A parent company doesn't "partner" with its own daughter company. Finally, the recap on episode 3 is on the Jetix version, which was produced by 4Kids as well. It also has some differences, i.e. it has a pre-intro segment and the intro is changed as well. Gotta Go Fast only plays in the credits at the end, the new intro sequence takes a lot of scenes from the pitch pilot and has a different them that only says over and over, "Sonic X".
There’s actually a lot of stuff you can show in Japan when it comes to stuff aimed at kids. A good example of this is the Keroro Gunsou anime and a bit of the manga, there’s a lot of.... questionable stuff in it(granted nothing too lewd like nudity) and yet it’s still one of the more popular anime aimed at a younger demographic, at least the anime is, the original 1999 manga was definitely aimed at an older audience but my point still stands.
It was a different time back then. For anime to succeed in the west some shows mainly Pokemon, Yu-Gi-Oh, One Piece and Sonic X had to take the bullets. Now those dark times are over except for Yu-Gi-Oh they still have a leash on them.
While I can't say I'm a fan of the Sonic franchise, I recently remembered this anime was a thing I watched back when I was a kid, at the time I didn't know about Anime and assumed it was of American origin. I went digging and found out it's Japanese and my god do I now despise what 4kids did to this show, especially after season 2. They outright changed parts of the story and even used different offscreen character voices in parts compared to the original, and if you liked Cosmo this was especially bad as they removed a key part of the story concerning her demise, completely unneeded, I hate stuff like this. Gonna be rewatching the show in Japanese later, and I'm gonna have a laugh at the dub changes while I'm at it.
Uncut Japanese Version Only (Not Referring to International Japanese Version/4kids English Dub): Time part 4:19 when TMS forgot about broadcast guidelines VS Time part 8:09 when TMS remembered about them. Why this happened is because this anime at the time is what we would call created between the era of the "Pokémon Shock Incident". This was put out back then with what we now call "The Hardening Test", so some frames are dropped just midway into the 1st episode and the footage which sadly included the R2J Japanese DVD released ended up looking awfully choppy. This is especially noticeable on the opening animation and quite a lot of episodes on it's original distributional run. A 2nd master of unhardened footage was later distributed to international companies such as 4kids and other places outside of Japan at the cost of all Japanese signs and songs being omitted. What is pretty interesting is the 3rd Season had the same guidelines as the Japanese Uncut version which is why stuff is so dramatically limited and may appear unfinished to some, unlike the International versions these masters were never changed to be the correct speed and retained everything you see in the left video. All the same I hope someday we can all enjoy these episodes in a proper way one day with a accurate dub and Japanese text retained along with no hardening tests but knowing how TMS are... who would do everything they can to omit Japanese text out of all their distributions of anime and only leaving in English and Engrish text only, it may not happen.

Well, whenever April hits. Happy 20th anniversary to Sonic X
Thank you for the comparisons! Fun fact: discotek media re licensed both the USA and the Japanese version now recently on blu ray (separately for each version) 💙💙
4Kids would flat out remove Rouge from the entire show if she wasn’t so present
14:23
R34 artists: Notes taken.
Another thing: I didn't remember what Rouge said in the Japanese Dub of episode 11, So I legitimately kept saying "No!" For 10 seconds.
I remember watching this. The entire time I was just thinking: "this is weird. I love it."
4kids, "How's the editing?"
Animator, "I found we can cut 5 seconds of this fight scene to allow better motion."
4Kids, "And what about the text in the background?"
Animator, "...Why do we need to remove the tex..."
4Kids, "GET OUT!"
Animator, "W-What?!"
4Kids, "We can't have kids reading! What good are cartoons if kids could just stare in the background?"
Too accurate.
We need a sonic x Kai of sorts. It could keep the Japanese ost, billboard text, and proper text translations for signs and such, but keeps the swears and sex jokes censored, as sonic is still a kids franchise, which could be very jarring to most people.
Exactly, why does hearing them throw swears cool? Uh nah man, I don't even want Shadow throwing swears like that
@@kidkatanatv
Why? You don't want to hear about the damn FOURTH Chaos Emerald?
@@espurrseyes42 Nah man, keep that in the dark ages lol
BUT IT IS HILARIOUS SEEING A SONIC CHARACTER SWEARING OR SEEING SOMETHING!
The french dub is sort of that
Lol I remember I laughed so hard when I heard Sonic saying “shit”
HAH
haha so I didn’t mishear when he said that
I remember hearing the reason why all the text is removed is because 4Kids sells their license to other countries and so they don't want anyone to be confused.
Or maybe, and hear me out on this, the reason 4Kids censors so much is probs cause it's meant *for kids*.
@@anarchistponcho8689 What does that have to do with my comment? 4Kids censoring shit in the first place is ridiculous.
With the scene of Cream calling the robot cute, technically the robot is way younger than her lol
Luckily the Netflix version has the recap parts
I always skip the recaps cause I never really care about that
@@bleepblock2177 ikr I hate recaps in things it's like "Our viewers all have short term memory loss, time for a recap"
@@carlwebber4094 Nope, recaps are made because episodes would air once a week. so its good to refresh your memory
Is the text kept?
PS: The original titles were kept too.
How on earth is Sonic "controversial" now especially with having the highest grossing film based on a video game of all time?
Damn 4th chaos emerald
Sonic Synergy
Being successful doesn't automatically dispel being controversial. (See: The richest people in the world, companies, politicians, etc.)
With Sonic in particular, it's moreso the general perception of the brand by the wider Internet. Seeing it as really something of an incoherent joke. Although that opinion isn't as prevalent as it used to be.
@@cdscissor nah plenty of people don't see Sonic as a joke.
@@jadedheartsz "Although that opinion isn't as prevalent as it used to be"
Imagine you're walking on a city and you see a lot of blank signs around you
The saddest thing about the audio changes is that the final hazard bio lizard fight is generic sonic X music for the English but Japan got live and learn
The direct translation of what Sonic says in the infiltration episode is "Shit... Let's go!"
Sonic said the S word? WATCH YOUR MOUTH SONIC THE HEDGEHOG
I Looked it up and the R, H, E on the baseball scoreboard stand for Run, Hit, and Error.
6:53 That's a parody of Dunlop tires which also might be why it was removed. I don't think it would cause a legal issue with how different it is but they might not have still not wanted to reference real brands.
in Yugioh one of Kaiba's monsters was called "Twilight Zone Dragon" not surprised at all that one got changed.
I still love the dub, mainly because it's a strong childhood memory
Fair enough
This is a great series, both Sonic X and your going over its many edits. Great job dude, thanks for all your hard work!
Any japanese animations: (has words)
4Kids: WE DONT READ!
Imagine if Omega was in Sonic X
He would probably try to shoot Sonic for congratulating himself over his friends and rivals when they were (wrongfully) upset with him as if he were mean to them (re: Knuckles like in episodes 5, 11 & 41)?
Imagine if they adapted Sonic heroes
12:02 "We cordially invites you" is Engrish, but 4kids could've just blanked out the s in "invites" and it would've been fine
Edit: Actually, I guess there's other issues with it
I grew up watching the latin spanish dub of Sonic X in Mexico, and I loved it but I honestly cannot go back to it or the 4kids dub once I saw the superior japanese version.
Same I rewatched it...still up in the air about that
Honestly, I thought he was saying that the explosion thing was chaos control, which would have made sense had he not said “it used to be”. That part confused me
The last shot of Eggman's tower collapsing was definitely shortened cause of 9/11
You also forgot to point out during episode 5 that in the Japanese version when Amy smacks the robot from the inside it shows her panties but in the Dub it replaced it with shocking flash around the room
INCLUDING to cover you know what! Lol
thank you so much for making these videos!!
1 Blink 80 fast is a great name for the song.
Japanese titles: *Are long*
English titles: The japanese titles are to long, let's make em' shorter.
Ah yes, 4Kids making as much sense as always. At least they kept the guns and didn't turn them into finger guns like they did in Yu-Gi-Oh XD
Amy in the Japanese dub and Amy in 4Kids are two completely different characters
5:16 I could've sworn I saw that sonic boom definition screen when I watched the 4Kids dub.
Maybe some of the non-English languages got it?
Did 4Kids have something against words being shown?
On Netflix in Canada they must of used the dub audio and every thing AND I MEAN EVERY THING else is from the uncut Japanese version
I'm not sure where you're getting that from,
I just checked Netflix in Canada and it's still got lots of cut stuff.
Hmm idk what I was saying
Just cannot believe that Sonic X ended on reruns in broadcast television on the last day of CW's VORTEXX block one month before Sonic Boom's first episode premiered on Cartoon Network a cable channel.
Honestly the Rouge scene would have flown over most kids heads. I've seen more suggestive things in western shows like Spongebob and ToyStory
like the episode gary takes a bath, don't drop it joke. plus with easy context, Spongebob, swearing😅😅😂😂
6:13, 6:15 Talk about cursing in the Uncut Japanese version.
“Your favorite chillie dog” ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
One thing we can give the Dub credit for is the consistency it’s added.
Japanese Words: Exist

It also didn't help that some of the people from 4kids said that they didn't even know about Sonic while doing this
There’s actually a lot of stuff you can show in Japan when it comes to stuff aimed at kids.
When it comes to stuff for Japanese audiences it’s apparently normal but in America so might find it out
Ngl this makes me wanna watch the sub now. Never saw it before, but probably will lol
The English dub should of stayed true to the Japanese :( I hate that so many things got cut
It was a different time back then. For anime to succeed in the west some shows mainly Pokemon, Yu-Gi-Oh, One Piece and Sonic X had to take the bullets.
Now those dark times are over except for Yu-Gi-Oh they still have a leash on them.
Tails is still my favorite both in English and Japanese version but in Japanese he is very emotional character!🦊
"Grab your favorite chili dog", kinda ironic considering Sonic X is the rare piece of animated Sonic media where he DOESN'T eat chilli dogs
