Paaji... You are 100% right in your understanding of various Auto Gearboxes .
But to be honest AMT & AGS are the cheapest Auto transmission to buy & least problematic. And are most commonly available in the Entry level Cars - Compact hatch,........
Most of the time all these are 1st time technically ill-informed car buyers. And if they happen to be ladies उनकी problems और सवाल यह होता है मैं car को traffic मे चला सकूंगा /पाउंगा ?
और अगर कही से information मिलती है की आप Auto GearWali Car लेलो, सब Problems Over. Advantage यह है की Gear shifting Easy/ Auto हो जाएगा और Car बीच सड़क मे बंध नहीं होगी. और difference सिर्फ ₹50-60 है. Hence he willingly buys an Auto shift, there are times I have heard these buyers say Gear का janjat ही नहीं. आप Experienced हो आपको Pata चलता है jerks का, मुजे यह normal लगता है. अगर मैं Manual Gear shifts करते है तो भी jerks लगने वाले ही थे. तो हम AMT/AGS से भी बहोत ही खुश है
I would say Traffic मे car बंध होने से Panic situation मे आने से AMT/AGS अच्छ है.
Would rather say let them experience AMT/AGS first & later they will graduate to buy better options if they can afford.
Presently AUTO Gearbox are available at higher Costs than MT. CVT or TC for atleast ₹1.5 lacs+ & DCT/DSG for ₹2 - 2.5 lacs+.
That's the reason why AMT/AGS / iMT are gaining Popularity.
Maybe another 3-5 years all MT will be discontinued or will sell the least under 10% only those who loving to drive for fun, followed by AMT/AGS/iMT 60% & DCT/DSG 30% as the Premium Gearbox.
Like our Nation Auto Buyers are also evolving or graduating. Like we did from Cordless phones to Smartphone.

Agree to your point, but I feel car manufacturers are taking advantage of people's lack of awareness. A large number of people want automatic so that they don't have to shift gears by engaging clutch. From that perspective, AMT is same as CVT/DCT/TC gearboxes. And hence they don't care.
Most of these people don't care about functioning of that gearbox as long as they don't have to shift.

I just purchased Seltos diesel imt. I had a test drive, gear shifts were very smooth, you have full control when to change gear and a very good value proposition.
The only thing is it takes a fraction of a second between gears compared to pure manuals.
But still I am very happy because it was an informed choice.

Another good option under 10lk ex showroom are Magnite/Kiger.
Have driven it for 25-30km. Though the plastics and fit-finish not as good as hyundai or even Suzuki but the CVT with 1lt turbo is good fit for city as well as highway drives.

Spot on! especially the point about sub-par reliability which not many people associate easily with AMTs. There are countless examples of clutch and actuators going bad before hitting 1 lac km mark, sometimes the cost of overhauls go as high as between Rs. 50k - 1lac in authorized service centers. Although that's still cheaper than proper automatic transmission going bad.

Avoid honda amaze please , it is very outdated product and it is at verge of ending of life cycle , and that is why i purchased altroz dca couple of months ago considering highway drive because of safety , but if i have to drive in city , should have gone with i20 .

@@Amoksid Very true.. Amaze has dated features and interiors.. We just get a smooth CVT, honda's reliability and soft cushiony suspensions but due to this.. It crashes its bottom on breakers.. Altroz has much better tuned suspensions..

Thanks for this Sunder. Unfortunately, mainstream media journos are not critical enough of the AMT variety. Hence there's not much awareness of AMT vs TC/CVT vs DCT. In spite of the shortcomings, Hyundai is doing well to make CVT and DCT mainstream and relatively affordable - kudos where it is due.

I bought hyundai aura SX plus amt petrol for my city use back in 2020 march right before pandemic. My priority was Automatic And budget max strech 9 lacs. Had little knowledge that AMT is not full Auto. Not exactly the mechanism. Clocked around 31k kms. Enough satisfied with smoothness. Would have gone for turbo if it had pure automatic unit in it. Which only had MT. Which is also discontinued with on going facelift. At the end very much satisfied with my AMT when i compare it with other in market. Have heard worst stories about other brands offering AMT.

Hyundai AMT is much much better than other brands.
There's hydraulic shifters in Hyundai AMT which modulates gears much better than mechanical ones used by others

So AMT is not a "proper" automatic, big deal? Some people prefer saving money and aren't that sensitive to a little headnod while shifting or lack of refinement.
Just as AMTs have some disadvantages, other "proper" automatics do too. Horror stories of VW DCTs are plenty, and refinement of CVTs known to produce delayed response (rubber banding as the kids call it today).
AMTs give good performance, and decent fuel efficiency. They give convenience of automatic without a hefty price tag. Some people might dig that. All I am saying is that there is also other side to this story.

You are right upto maximum extent. However, automatic means a person dnt need to do anything by him/herself. Same works with AMT. GEARS SHIFT as per tuning l. We dnt need to do anything. So u can say it automatic

I was already clear that AMT is not a proper automatic. It is instead a cost effective solution of manual transmission. I say because two months back I drove old gen Grand i10 auto which has a torque converter. It felt very smooth and I was very surprised that how could I drive an automatic so well as it was my very first time😅.

But last point compares it with MT.
AMT ka actual comparison sirf MT ke sath hona chahiye. What it is giving over MT.
Xyz ki city me short trips hoti h. Wo years se manual chala rahe hai. Jerks lags & all wo manual me already jhelte aa rahe hai( due to overtaking in city and stop & go traffics)
Uske comparison me kitna convenience hai and jitne extra jerks.
Kyuki AMT me mujhe manual ke close milage bhi milegi( which is difficult in CVT i20 or amaze)
Xyz is buying a city hatchback or something AMT for convenience cz he was else going to buy MT
And he may not be into smoother gearshifting
This is my opinion what i feel while driving a manual, after driving altroz DCA & virtus AT for a few days. And which transmission i would choose and would recommend to my relatives who are majorly into point A to B in delhi traffic in their current Maruti manual cars & comfortable with 16+ milage in city
I haven't driven AMT yet. ( Have sat in dzire AMT)

Idhar charcha phir doosri taraf chali jayegi. CVTs bhi achi mileage return karte hain and AMTs ki mileage alag hai hai as per the segment. Swift AMT ko XUV 3OO AMT ki mileage ke sath compare kar sakte hain? A few P.S.
1. intial motive was to just point out about that image issue. Ki last point ka comparison out of track laga. Since initial points were comparing with proper autos

I want to point out 1litre verna being turbo was not powerful as 1.5 NA in city or verna itself . Same many VW fans claim 1tsi power than Vtec in 1.5 city , which is also wrong as mid range 1 tsi seems to pull but not for long and in initial also city with Vtec manual beats Dsg . And top end of city is not lockd it can go upto 213 km top end while 1.5tsi only 203 . And around 190 for 1tsi

Sunder veer, big fan, but I apologise; I kinda disagree with this one. Average people's perception is if the car has no clutch and gear, then it is automatic for them since they are not shifting gears manually with a clutch.. No matter whether it is AMT, AGS, DCT, AT, TC and so on..
My sister is driving Exter AMT and uncle is driving Nexon AMT. I said the same thing that you're trying to say. But realistically speaking, they aren't dealing with any gears or clutch so they will always see AMT as automatic and now I also don't think that they are wrong about it..

Asta i20 now doesn't have a Turbo Engine. It has a dull 1.2 Naturally Aspirated. If you like to have performance in your car, prefer N-Line only.

Not having need to press clutch & slot gears is more than enough convenience for VFM conscious Indians,it gets job done
Ones who doesn't have price constraints they can go for proper automatics like Dct, Torque converters,Cvts

​@@pankajraj5615it's like semi automatic because it just has a normal gearbox same as manual not a dedicated Automatic gearbox due to which it's very laggy and jerky and isn't considered complete Automatic as CVT , DCT , Torque converter etc

@@bhanugoyal8310 I understand that and I drove all the gearboxes AMT,CVT,TC and DSG. AMT has major lag while shifting gears. I didn't ask about quality. My question was what does the term "automatic" mean and how AMT cannot be termed as automatic. Not asking about it is jerky or not. I have seen similar explanation at many places but in Engineering term AMT does qualify as automatic. Anything that can be achieved without manual intervention is called automatic.

@@pankajraj5615 amt is Automated Manual Transmission basically it isnt a dedicated Auto Gearbox instead it uses a same gearbox as Manual but it just has actuators and sensors on it which does the the Clutch Job and gearshifts happen at certain decided RPM from the ECU but in full Automatics The Gearbox are designed so that they can change the Gear Ratio while according to Drive Style so if you want to drive slow it will put gear ratios according to that and if you suddenly start to accelerate it will change the gear ratio and what RPM to change according to that.

Aapko autometic ka matlb hi nahi pata autometic ka matlc hota hai jo bina manual afort ke ho AMT me ka matlb auto gear sift hai gear bina kisi ke hath lagay sift ho raha malb o autometic hai pahle apna gayan thik karo variant alg alg hai amt cvt dct ya sab uske varient hai samjhe aap khud ko kuch pata ni hai infuencer bana firta hai😂😂
