Been waiting for this comment.
Watched ProJared's let's play and was glad I wasn't the one playing it. I would have put it down pretty fast. I tried playing it on Switch and it definitely controls like ass. I just wanted to understand what Jared was trying to explain and it really is counterintuitive.
damn was confused as hell to see this vid in my sub box but thankful that the community tab exists! sad to see Oliver go but excited to see where you go next bro. keep up the awesome work it's great to see you back at it!
This needs WAY more views. Loved it!
First time visitor to your channel. What I appreciate is that your footage is off a CRT. How did you setup recording it?
The magic of editing! It's just a regular recording of gameplay that I run through a crt screen filter under my overlay!
@@Croey cool. I’m looking for a good way to capture CRT footage for UA-cam
@@MagisterHamid I mean, probably your best bet is to get an elgato and get it connected to an actual CRT, though youre not going to get the scanlines. it'll just be a clear input like recording emulation.
@@Croey yeah that’s the problem. I want to convey the renal CRT image not only with the scanlines but I just hate the pixelated raw look. That was never how the games looked back in the days
I also grew up with the game and owned a physical copy of it. All these are valid points IMO. I'm not a fan of the controls either and was glad they were changed in the sequel. There's a valid argument to be made to treat the came more like a puzzle than an action game for the controls, but being patient to figure out how to handle an enemy that is actively shooting at you makes it harder than it needs to be.
Also the game didn't age well. It did a lot of cool things with the traveling to all the different islands and meeting lots of different NPCs, but the dialog didn't age well. It was "fine" for when it came out but even back then it was so-so. Lots of the music still holds up really well though.
Sure it wasn't the greatest game in the world on the NES, but all that said, I still loved it to death! As a kid, it took me across the ocean on a grand adventure that I could have a lot of fun on. The (especially now) cringy dialog was good enough to keep me going and I was always looking forward to what I'd come across in the next chapter. This is example of how a game doesn't have to be objectively good to be beloved by many. ;)
I agree with ya for the most part. I dont think the game sucks. ya i beat it, its a pretty easy game till the very last level. I enjoyed it a little bit but i agree its def not a classic imo. Its also a 1 and done game. Ill never feel the need to play it again. However i really hate how ppl use a game being bad as a reason to wimp it out and use save states. Just wish more effort went into these old games instead of just cheating it out when it gets tough.
It had really good sound design. I always remember it feeling good to hit enemies and step on switches.
Little funfact for ya, did you know a couple of the tracks have corrupted channels, and you can get a patch for the rom that fixes it? It's pretty cool to hear some of the music the way it was intended!
Interesting take. I personally I had a good time with statropics, but there was certainly a lot wrong with it.
Great vid man
I have this game in my collection some where collecting dust and remember playing it the first time the control's where so stiff i thought i broke my controller so after that i only played it if i was sick or really bored and my rating is 1.5 out of 5.
Love both Startropics 1 and 2. Two of the best games on the NES!
Grossly? Nah, it's like a solid 8 for me compared to other action RPG's on the NES at the time. I agree it's usually regarded as a 9 or 9.5 which is only slightly overrated imo.
90% of this video is one of the weakest criticisms of a NES game I’ve ever seen.
But it is actually a good game! U typed it yourself Croey!
no way no way no way no way !!!!
@@Croey Way
Sounds to me you’re a chump.
Sure the controls were stiff, but Zoda’s Revenge had the opposite issue, too slippery.
Both games are awesome dude, you just can’t play it
There can't be a git gud argument, especially considering that even the world's best speedrunner runs into problems because of some of the stuff i've listed. I've beaten both of them multiple times, but Zoda's Revenge is just an overall better experience. I'll take slippery controls over stiff controls any day.
