Attempt to ride Sani Pass on a Honda CRF250L - it's HECTIC!! [S5 - Eps. 14]

- In this episode I am attempting to scale the hardest mountain pass of South Africa: Sani Pass. Right at the border between South Africa and Lesotho lies this pass, and it is not for the faint hearted. These were the steepest, most washed away tracks I've ever attempted and without the option to slow down or pause, it was an adrenaline filled race to the top. HECTIC!

As a man old enough to be Noraly's grandfather, I congratulate her parents for raising such a brave, physically energetic and mentally strong young woman. I've ridden off-road on a motorcycle and it is difficult and frankly scary at times. I was holding my breath through the worst of this ride. I cannot imagine her parents watching this. They were surely terrified as their daughter took us along to see this spectacular part of the world. A big thumbs up for Mr. and Mrs. Schoenmaker for their parenting skills!!
What a nice heart felt comment 😉
So true.
Thank you very much.
Some of us women are made in spite of and not because of our parents.
You know psychopaths have no fear
I am South African, and tackled the Sani pass 25 years ago on an old Yamaha XT250. It is indeed a serious challenge, and looks is considerably worse condition now than it did then! You are one tough rider for sure!! Well done for going back down the way you came up, we went over and down the Lesotho side! PS: I would by no means class that as an "attempt". That you got all the way to the top, and all the way back down, in one piece, without dropping Savanah once, is without a doubt a roaring success!! 💪
I have a 2016 xt250 & and an Mt03
Noraly, I'm your Father's age, riding since I was 50 years old. Seeing you ride up AND down Sani Pass caused my heart to race and made me hold my breath many times. Having scaled passes (not even as close to the length of Sani Pass) of such magnitude, I have to say you ARE ONE TOUGH COOKIE (American slang)! You ARE an AMAZING young woman.
Amen on that but I do not Trust her Judgement many Times but with God's Help, she seems to always make it to her Destination...
all that and one-handed
@@wedwardes if you're referencing the shots of her I think she had a GoPro mounted on the bike pointing at her, pretty sure she wasn't holding a GoPro on a selfie stick, I could be wrong but doubt anyone would do that one-handed
@@anlacombe For several series, she has been (self) videoed with one hand off the bike and presumably holding a selfie stick. A bit too brave for me..
YES! ONE TOUGH COOKIE! I was on pins and needles and South Africa is gorgeous!
Such courage. She's all alone. Shows that if you overthink everything, trying to project all the possible consequences, you'll never do anything.
Not very wise to go alone
You are Alone ?
Yes!
Why?
Because I like it! 😂
( No Noraly you are not alone. You are with 700,000 subs behind you, sending good vibes and enjoying every step of it. )
Definitely
True 😊
Next time Noraly could answer: No we are 700000 of us.
Absolutely Noraly is the Queen badass!!
Queen Elizabeth agreed!
You will never see a better advertisement for a one of your motorcycles, come on Honda reach out to this incredible young lady and show her some love.
Indeed, the perfect bike for the job.
And give her a CRF450L! She needs more power.
@@ronhanway9384 she doesn't need 1000 km oil changes and 2000 km valve adjustments. The little 250 (300 now) has all the power you need to tackle anything off road if you have a bit of skill, and 13000 km oil changes more than makes up for it. On that loose rocky surface there is such a thing as too much power. The tyres only have so much traction available.
Honda this young Lady needs to be spoiled with a brand new Africa Twin......with compliments from the factory!!!
@@wicusmeyer9426 While an Africa Twin is a a very fine motorcycle on tarmac or hard dirt surfaces, you'd never get one up and down the conditions shown in this video. Aside from weighting 65% more (90 kg, 200 lb), making it far harder to woman-handle, the mismatch between available torque and grip would be extreme. There are videos of Africa Twins and BMW GS going up Sani Pass, but with the road in FAR better condition with cars having made hard packed fairly smooth wheel tracks relatively clear of rocks and with most remaining rocks embedded in dirt.
Noraly, my husband and I just watched you tackle Sani Pass. My heart was in my throat. I was terrified for you. You are amazingly brave. Once again, thank you for showing us our beautiful Earth.
Seeing the one lone person walking down that "road" was jarring to say the least. He must have been in awe of Noraly riding her motorcycle up and then back down that mountain. Incredible. I've ridden in some loose rock, switchback mountains in Idaho, but the steepness of this took my breath away. Her perserverance and bravery are commendable.
Never before have I gotten so exausted just watching a video.
🤣 Yeah, riding can be alot of work thats for sure. Especially a ride like that, she did amazing
I was on the edge of my Lazy Boy holding my breath. Great job, Noraly!
Lying in my garden getting some much needed Vitamin D…and my Fitbit is telling me I’ve just done a workout listening to this audio only. Will have to watch the video later.
I always prefer to go uphill, be it on MTB, motorbike, 4x4, with the exception of water.
Hot engine going up, hot brakes coming back down, hot Noraly for the entire journey. That little bike is tough, so is it's rider !!! Wow, spectacular.
My heart was in my mouth the entire way up...think I held my breath for a good portion of it and then worried about the route down. Well done, your riding skills truly know no bounds...I've watched you grow in both skill and confidence. I'm proud of you!!!
This was wonderful, congratulations 👍🏻. I can’t believe you just turned around and rode back down, there is a great pub at the top, the highest pub in Africa with great snacks and drinks and the friendliest staff . If any bikers out there are interested in riding in Lesotho please look up the Roof of Africa rally. It’s now changed its name but has a great history...safe journeys everyone.
" This is just a warm up", says Noraly at the bottom.
" i am glad that i trained for this in the Netherlands ".
" what a view, what a view".
Well done Noraly. That was not easy.
Sani Pass has deteriorated since i last did it nearly 2yrs ago.
ItchyBoots, the Queen of the Mountain.
Noraly, I'm 54yrs old riding motocross, enduro, street bikes and now adventure bikes my whole life. That was truly a gutsy ride and very well executed. You go girl. Best wishes from Australia
"Attemping to ride Sani Pass" should be changed to "Conquering Sani Pass"!! I have watched every one of your videos Noraly and this was truly the most technically challenging ride and when you say you don't know how you did it, I'll tell you how. With sheer guts, skill, determination and endeavour! You're a fantastic role model for all us female riders and riders-to-be out there! Can we also give a shout out to your parents! As a mum myself, my heart would have stopped several times on that ride up for my daughter!
OMG NORALYYYYYY!! I was so nervous, on the edge of my seat, my heart pounding and in your words "sweating like a pig" hahaha. You are simply an AMAZING woman, I am beyond impressed.
I grew up off-roading in Africa and that was one of the gutsiest performances I've ever seen in my almost 60 years of riding. Well done indeed, Noraly! Total respect!! :-)
Yeah I totally agree,,, well done gal !!!!
She' fearless!! She made me feel ashamed of my fear riding my motorcycle and I'm a 47 years old man.
Well said sir!
@@RichardASK Thank you. It is heartfelt.
I totally agree with you Richard, she is awesome. Also it proves that cc's don't count, she is a talented, skilled rider.Greetings from a fellow biker in Johannesburg.
Well done girl, you can be very proud of yourself. We as South Africans admire you for what you have achieved. We know how difficult it is and now after the rain, its even worse. We loved your video and were sitting on the edge of our seats.
I have been motorcycling for nearly 60 years and I keep reviewing this video and the 10th viewing is every bit as thrilling and exciting as
the first!!!
The Death Road in Bolivia is nothing compared to the road to the Sani Pass. Admired by Nurali's courage.
Noraly, that was the scariest, hairiest thing i've ever watched. My heart was in my mouth the whole time. If I hadn't known you must have made it safely in order to post the video I don't think I could have carried on watching. You're a very brave woman.
that was what i thought too all the time. incredible.
Ditto! I have a real fear of heights and actually leaned away from the edges as she was riding! What an achievement!
my butt clenched more than once when she was close to the edge 😅
Kept thinking the same thing, She had to survive, the video was posted. Still my nerves are shot. 👍🏼
@@abdell8391 mine too 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Besides Noraly’s big accomplishment, how about some applause for that tough little Honda that helped her!!
I don't think Basanti could have handled that ride.
@@brucehunter3966 Agreed. Nor could the slightly improved Dhanno!
I was thinking the same thing. People like to ignore Honda's for the more exotics, but Honda's get it done. With a great and brave pilot of course.
Honda should sponsor her with a controbution to the channel for this achievement.
Its not about the bike
You should have kept going into Lesotho. It has to be the most hassle free border crossing and country in Africa, the scenery and mountain passes are to die for, and the people super friendly. I lived a few dozen miles from Sani across the plateau for four years.
You were actually on the roof of the world. A remnants of a vast plateau in the centre of a super continent that stretched from the Andes to Australia's Great Barrier Reef, the Himalayas and Morocco to Antarctica (200 million years ago), and Lesotho 🇱🇸 is about the only place where that original surface is still preserved.
Absolutely agree, made no sense to me to trum around and go back. We know she is a great rider, what point was she trying to make.More boring going down the same pass. Sorry just my opinion. I fast forwarded through the way back and return. Just boring.
The infamous Sani pass. I have attempted this on a Mountain Bike and failed miserably. What you need to realise is that from the SA border it is only 8 km to the top with 911m elevation gain. Because this is the no man area between SA and Lesotho these roads are not been looked after and hence the state they are in. The camera certainly does not do any justice as to how hectic the road is as well as how steep some of the parts are. Well done Noraly that was some impressive riding. There is a mountain bike 3 day stage race, Sani2c, that starts at the bottom of the Sani pass that ventures down to the coast. You were a month and a few days to early.
Noralay..... you have the upmost respect from every genuine biker here,to all the dislikers,, you try doing what noralay is doing,,, shame on you all.. well done itchy boots 🇬🇧👍👍
I agree. I am sure these dislikers cannot give ONE sensible reason for disliking such a wonderful video. Insane.
@@AshokSharma-im7jw forget the dislikers we all know what they are mate
Totally agree 👍🇬🇧
Heartily Agree! This is a difficult ride requiring great skill and strength. And that's only on the way up. Going down can be more difficult. Very impressive. Guessing you, Gary, are in England. Cheers from the US, and thanks for saying this for all of us.
Spot on Mr Edwards, could not have said that any better. Absolute respect for this Brave Lady. Truth be told I would’ve turned back at least 5 times before the top.
The 64 people that downvoted this need to get out of their parents basement and do something in the real world. Two thumbs up for you Noraly, you are totally awesome. Much respect. Lots of love from Utah.
If we all got one friend each to subscribe we could push her to 1.5 mil but if the 64 deadbeats did the same it would be a waste of time. 🤓

Another "old guy" with lots of Motocross, Road biking experience etc. There are many guys that I am sure would bail out after going up 1/3 of that mtn pass! I was well aware how much tougher it would be on the way down! but it did not faze you. Your forearms must have been completely pumped/worn out not to mention your hands locked to the handgrip at the end of the ride. Your videos continue to amaze me, I love coming along for the ride. Thanks for taking us ALL ALONG. Keep it up, such a great attitude.
First of all, hats off to you !!
I only ever went on mountainbikes, but seeing those rocks made me tired at the start ! And the descent was mad !!
On another note, the surprise on the face of the border patrol was priceless, when he said : why ???, I laughed out loud.
When you bought this bike, I thought "she's never gonna make it mountain passes like I've only seen in South Africa, and rocky roads. Not enough power". And you proved me wrong, and I'm so impressed by your technical skills. You are absolutely fierce! Maximum respect!
I actually own a little Honda crf250l and what it lacks in brute force, it makes up for in is ability to crawl up hill. It is heavy for what some would call a little bike but very stable. That said, you still need some mad skills to do a pass like this one.
Indeed quite heavy with it’s 140kg, but it goes through everything at low speed. I did some crazy stuff with it. But what I really admire is her ass…the seat is really, really hard!
I took almost a similar steep tarmac road in India with a Honda 100cc motorcycle long back. This was a hill station Matheran, near Bombay.
Honda makes amazing riding machines.
Bro in most parts of Nepal is called commuting
i've done about the same thing rocky roads and steep climb with my crf 150 l, just at a different location. Also i used supermoto wheels.
Boy, was I ever leaning on my couch trying to get away from the cliff edge. Insanely scary, and beautiful, at the same time.
Same here lol
Same too
Yeah, at a certain point I started thinking: "Well, she uploaded this, so she must've made it back safely", just to set my mind at ease.
It's going to be interesting, if there is a comment of someone actually falling off the couch watching it in a few months. 😊
Eef Neleman Exactly what I thought! LOL
I never knew Sani pass was so treacherous
Having done lots of off-roads in the Himalayas myself, the do not hit the clutch moment felt so relatable.
Also had my heart in my mouth when you were coming downhill, the feeling when you are on the edge and a rock shifts under your wheel is a frightening moment tbh
Great riding!
Noraly, I would love to do the things you do, but the numbers are against me..... I am twice your age, have half your riding skills, and only about 10% of your courage. Thanks so much for letting me share your adventures, without ever leaving my armchair. You rock!!
While watching this stunning video, I kept thinking, "Well, she edited and uploaded this video, so she must still be alive!!"
"You are alone"... Why?! "Because I Like It!! ". Put that on your next T shirt Noraly. 😂😂👍
I'd buy one!
I remember doing this in my mountain bike a decade ago. Road looks much worse. And that feeling of breathlessness at altitude. Wow. Well done.
I was crying driving this road on 4*4 meeting trucks n I really respect you girl.. That road goes to my hometown you missed very nice lunch there by the boarder... Thanks again for being you.
Noraly, the fearless Lone Rider in the wild... - Up and down the Sani Pass on one day without dropping the bike once, thumbs up!
Edit: I just checked the clock on the bike: She left the border station at 9:00 am and was back at 10:42 am - not even 2 hours for up and down, wow.
Indeed. I wouldn't dare to go there. Only in a 4x4😀
What a ride. You did outstanding! Rocks galore! Stay safe!!!👍
Noraly, The best pilot in the world!!!!
Awsome. And should be emphasized: alone. The risk factor is much much greater.
You breathe as if you have to push the bike up the mountain....
Well done noraly!!
I rode up a road like that one time, got to a smooth part of the road, where i could sit on the seat, and my seat was gone. I had to ride back down and find my seat.
Now there's a story!
Thank you for the chuckle.
Count yourself lucky you weren't on a bicycle... ;-p
Oh my God this Girl is something else I can’t believe you, you are my Hero I can only believe it because I am seeing you do this. My respect I am floored
Itchy Boots is a prodigy, period. I was holding my breath like so many others on here watching her insane abilities to navigate that terrain to the top, very scary! It looked painful too! GOD bless her! Also, my heart skipped beats when I saw those highway workers so exposed to the traffic, no warnings to the drivers, no cones, no stopping of traffic and rerouting to one lane to keep them safe, and trucks actually backing up with moving traffic approaching them. Wow! That would never happen in America! Albeit, the traffic was light but it only takes one driver driving too fast or not paying attention. I wonder if there are any accidents caused there because of this lack of prevention. What a beautiful country though, obviously a lot of work yet to do in order to provide safe roads for traveling. Loved the little cafe that she stopped at for breakfast, so quaint and cute, the food looked delicious too!
Hello Itchy ....
I am Marcos. Impressive your climb to Sani Pass ... !!!
I am writing to you from Mendoza Argentina. I have a motorcycle like that, or similar, only very prepared for enduro and my travels.
It is the first time that I write in any social network. But your sympathy and bravery motivated me to do it.
You are Precious ... keep going ... Successes. !!!
When you reached the top, I thought "Now the real challenge begins". Others may disagree, I find riding down a steep, rocky slope with switchbacks much more difficult than riding up. I struggle with speed control when the tires are slipping with even moderate braking. Congratulations! Excellent descent! Much respect for that ride. But more than that, great appreciation for the way you present information whether it is a challenging ride or a geologic discovery. Thank you for keeping this channel one I can share with my grandchildren. They ask about this and one other channel all the time. I think that puts you in the top 2 for young children trying to understand the world. Keep riding.
Yeah, if you dont ride a bike in such places you cant appreciate how difficult descending is. You can't so easily accelerate you way out of trouble like going up. Dont try it on a BMW! This is where having a 21'' front wheel comes into its own.
It’s always harder to go down hill .She did a great job 👏
Much much easier to lose the front end going back down. I agree I always prefer up, although I do find it takes more physical effort.
((recovering from hyperventilating)) Whoa. Whoa. Whoa. I kept telling myself, I know she doesn’t fall off the edge because she posted the video!! Phew! That was nerve racking even from my couch! I cannot imagine your excitement to have conquered that! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 You are amazing!!!!

So, firstly, we’ll done on getting up Sani! The pass itself between boarders is known as “No man’s land” officially it does not belong to either South Africa nor Lesotho. This is why very little maintenance has been done on the pass! Just a bit of trivia? We’ll done again and I love your videos!
No FLATS!! Congratulations - I have seen you on rough road, sand, mud, rocks . . . . But Sani Pass is a completely different level. Have to say some of the riding along the edge, inches from big drop offs, got my heart pounding. Hope you enjoyed the views - really majestic mountains and valleys. Amazing no tire issues!

This journey proved Noraly a real tough and trained Mountain Moto-Biker. This roads reminds me of the Spiti Valley roads. Its very much similar to the roads of Kunzum Pass. The good ole days! Thanks for sharing your trip…you are one strong woman! Saddle up n ride on! ❤
"you ride alone why?" "Cuz I like it!"...you go girl.
Wonder Woman of Riders Community. Hats off to Norlay and Honda for making up to Sani Pass and back safely.
Noraly, the man invented the wheel for you, amazing. (You beat up your motorcycle) Hug from Porto-Portugal.
For Noraly to ride that small bike up this treacherous terrain is nothing less than incredible!!!!!!
I wouldn’t attempt this unless I had a mountain specific type bike that was heavily modified for exactly this so-called road, plus a mechanic and a medic following behind me!!!!!
As an ex- cross country and enduro racer that been riding for 60 years, and watching you for the last couple of years; you just continue to break new barriers and impress us all!!
i as well have ridden and raced off road for over 50 years and i am so impressed with how well you have done on those large slippery rocks on such a steep incline . The camera does not make it look nearly and steep as it is and the bike you ride with the good torque it has , is what i think is the perfect choice for that climb . And yes it got my heart pumping as well , riding with you .
BOOOOOORING!!
@@BrassLock Just ignore that individual.
Sani Pass is the center section of the international Roof of Africa Rally that gained recognition after Malcom Smith won in the early 1970s. He usually rode Husqvarnas but for those races used KTMs, or vica versa?
@@ebutuoyebutouy Bultacos. I borrowed Malcolm's 250 World Championship bike when he came to race in Salisbury, Rhodesia. Just got beaten by a wheel by a buddy of mine on Don Rickman's 500 Metisse! :-) Happy days!
To see sooooooo many comments here in such a short time is a testimony of what you achieved! Honda should use you for their advertising. They should give you free bikes. Dutch strong!
I can’t believe you made it. I would have quit way earlier. Unbelievable perseverance.
I started riding at age 6. I have 40+ years riding experience. I have
Riden just about everything, dirt, trials, Enduro, street, small, and large bikes.
That pass was VERY intimidating!!! You deserve to be SOOOOOOO PROID of yourself!!! Very steep, and very rough. The lines you picked, mostly were good, a few, not so much. But you don't ride that every day!!! Could I have ridden that? Sure, but ON VIDEO? AND Keeping up a running dialog??? I DON'T think I could!!!!!
LADY!!! YOU ARE AMAZING!!!!!!
Thank you for sharing!!!!
This ride has got to be the hardest, the most dangerous and the most breath-holding one ever since you first started in India. SALUTE!!!
Got to love the Dutch accent. 6:35....”No more shitting down”
I appreciate how you coach yourself through the difficult moves as you ride up to Sani Pass. Good job Noraly.
It's amazing what you do. I discovered this channel not long ago and I can not stop watching🤩
My thoughts while watching this:
- That does NOT look fun
- Holy !@#$ that edge is close
- You are an extremely skilled rider
- What a great testament to the Honda CRF250L
If you knew what you know now, would you have done the trip up Sani Pass.? Noraly you have just earned Mega respect from many guys watching.
Wow, that was intense. It’s not often you hear any kind of fear in Noraly’s voice, but there were a few moments there during the “keep going, keep going” that definitely sounded like her this is really scary voice.
Very much respect! You did it! I remember you were riding other, very hard mountain "roads", but this once seems to have been the ultimate challenge so far. Noraly, you made a fantastic video. I am very impressed!
You’re a very impressive woman, most people won’t understand how physically and mentally tiring it is to ride rough terrain , and then to do it alone , well, like I say very impressive Noraly.
Noraly, that was perhaps one of the most intense rides I have ever watched or been on! This Canadian biker takes his hat/ helmet to you! Excellent riding!
Lmet off
If anyone doubted you were an adventurer, think of the strain getting up there, nobody around, and what if you got a puncture? You're an adventurer, that's for sure.
Your ability to select the correct path to take on some of the surfaces you maneuver is amazing. That is, of course, the most crucial part of riding off road. I am enthralled with your journeys. They're mesmerizing! Thank you for the trips.
I bet all of your instructors from the training sessions watched this with a big smile on their faces.
Her instructors were probably leaning side to side in their chairs as they watched.
I was going to write exactly what you said, beginning with Peter and the rest of her instructors must really be proud. I totally agree with you.
Yes, they at the Police Academy and at Motocross would definitely be proud 😊.
i bet. 12:30 That's what she said ...
Nail biting.
