  • DUNNING CELEBRATES 150TH ANNIVERSARY OF BOWLING CLUB!
Although Dunning Bowling Club was constituted in 1873, bowls were being played in Dunning before that time and it has now emerged that the green at the Kirklands Quarry existed as early as 1851. Bowls was still in its infancy and most greens were no larger than three or four rinks. Dunning green however seems to have been full size at 120 feet square.
Lord Rollo of Duncrub presented the club with its new site in 1895 and the new green was then 38 x 36 yards and was laid at a cost of £5. The green has been extended twice since then.
In 1975 the club decided to run an open pairs competition limited to 84 pairs. After the open pairs tournament had been going for a few years it attracted the sponsorship of Bertola Sherry, which proved a great boost and it became known throughout the county as the Bertola Pairs with sherry being distributed on each of the three Sundays to players and spectators alike. Needless to add it became the popular competition of its time.
One of our most well known members was Charlie Laing who was SBA councillor for thirteen years and Perthshire Secretary for over fifteen years.
The club has had certain success over the years namely in 1976 and 1977 the Club carried off both the Perthshire Campbell Trophy and the Whitelaw Cup only missing taking the Campbell for three years running by two shots.
