The mounted officers were being oh so gentle and patient with the evading shoplifter. It is trivial to knock someone down hard while on horseback.

What should be talked about is how pathetic this guy couldn't outrun a horse that just galloped around and didn't have to break out into a sprint.
New Mexico is the "land of manaña" - everything and everyone is kind of laid back.
Plus, the temps are usually pretty warm and the sun is always (95% of the time) shining; who wants to exert themselves in those conditions?

@@silentmajority8365 An human can outrun a horse in the very short and very long distance. Humans can accelerate faster, and can run at a slower pace for a longer distance. The horse has an advantage between 100m and 35km, further if it has no rider.

Why are police still on horses?
Because bicycles don't produce terror in the hearts of criminals when you ride towards them on one.
Easier to get around. As we saw, horses can maneuver in places that cars cannot.

Police have horses....feel sorry for the horse because the officers could have lassoed and stopped the thief faster and more efficiently rather than chasing the guy down in the middle of on-coming traffic, endangering the horse, the officer and possible inattendent driver.

Yeah horse only runs about 40 mph...oh wait. Humans only run about 15 mph.
This has to be one of the most dangerous things a cop on a horse I have ever seen. This put his safety at risk by chasing the perp in to a live street with traffic . As we have hear and seen for years it always officer safety well this presentation shows and proves the the irresponsibility of their poor judgement by this tactic .
I was more concerned for his horse which he was putting at risk. But the drivers seemed pretty hip to what was going on, fortunately.

I’m sure the officer would have called off the pursuit if at anytime the horse or himself would have been at risk! Just like any chase, the public knew and they were allowing the officers to do the arrest! They have horses and cop cars. Where I live it’s just cop cars.
