    Casey, congratulations on completing this gorgeous wool coat. You should be so proud of it. That little thrifted blazer certainly has rewarded you big time! I am trying to shift my focus when sewing to savoring the steps along the way rather than being all about the finished garment. We learn and grow through the process. Those pieces I have sewn that required me to hone a new skill or solve a problem are my proudest makes. You definitely need to add a label to your coat. The final touch. 💕

      Thank you, Denise! That is so true for me too: the projects that take the most care and time are the ones I am most proud of in the end. This one really forced me to slow down a lot! But it was so worth it.

      Thank you, Joy! While I was making this I was thinking of a coat that I thrifted that is so well made...it has to be at least my age or older. And I love that coat. I picture this one being discovered when I'm long gone and someone feeling excited about it (is that morbid haha?) :)

    I 100% agree with the mindset of sewing really just being simple lines of stitching. Thinking that it’s really hard is what prevents a lot of people from getting started. For 3 years I refused to get a sewing machine and would hand sew everything. I even took it upon myself to deconstruct a dress shirt for my husband and then recreate it by hand. It’s his favorite shirt and I get to be proud of it every time he wears it! But I wouldn’t have ever started that project if I was overcome with how hard it would be.
    I was just excited to practice my hand stitching and wasn’t going to let anything stop me. That shirt is perfection! I felled all the seams to finish them and did all the button holes myself. It was sometimes an agonizingly slow process but the day I finished it was epic!!!

    • @PatternScout
      @PatternScout  Рік тому +2

      Yes! This! I really enjoy the entire process, mistakes and all. I see every project as an opportunity to stretch myself and learn something new. And hand stitching is always so relaxing when I allow myself to do it. So cool that you hand-stitched his shirt! Yes, it is time-consuming, but can also be so enjoyable with the right mindset going in. 100%!

      @@PatternScout mistakes are the best part! I agree that I learn some new technique with each project. Usually I’ll plan projects so that there’s only one or two new things to learn. Gives me the space to really learn them and not get overwhelmed.

    Gorgeous coat! A lot of people think knitting and crochet are hard, but you're just basically making loops of yarn. The key is that you have to enjoy making loops of yarn or it's just torture. I think sewing is the same. You have to enjoy doing it until you get skilled and then it's not hard, but it can be complex in a stimulating way.

    • @PatternScout
      @PatternScout  Рік тому

When you were sewing on those beautiful big matte gold snaps saying they would be temporary, I was like, “Really?? But they look so perfect!”. You are very admirable with your stick-to-ovness! (not a word I know!) You set a great example with your honest dialogue. I have also done projects that I want to be over even though I still want the product. Once in a while I work on a sideline to give me a fresh point of view. I also like that you reanalyze and make changes along the way. That is what giving yourself time does for you. I am still learning that concept. Good enough is not good enough anymore! Honestly, your coat turned out so stunning! I had a similar one in the mid-2000s that I wore until it fell apart and then eventually didn’t fit me anymore (yes, I even wore it with a torn lining). It was fast fashion though and the only thing I could afford in that style back then. Now that I started sewing I’ve got some lovely double-faced wool lying around that I don’t dare cut into because I’m afraid of ruining it.

I have been planning to try and make Angela Kane's "Frock Coat"...it has a vintage look to it with pleats in the back. I say a pox on all the trolls out there..You give so much of yourself to make these videos for us .....don't let a cowardly troll take one speck of your happiness. We love and adore you and the work that you do. Thank you so much for sharing your talent with us.

    A beautiful coat Casey, congratulations on such a fine make. I have previously made a tailored jacket with the help of a Craftsy class and it certainly was a time consuming project and I learnt so many different techniques. Unfortunately, where I live in Queensland Australia there is rarely a need to wear a jacket or a coat even in winter otherwise I would attempt to make a coat. You are very inspiring.

      Many thanks! I feel like I still have lots to learn with tailoring. I always wish for warmer weather here in Michigan, UNLESS I am making a coat haha. I do really love having the opportunity to wear my cozier projects :)

    You and Bernadette are two of my favourite sewing UA-camrs so you referring to one of her videos made me so happy 😁 The coat looks amazing, such hard work but what a reward 😍 PS I literally saved your quote "it's just rows of stitching" when that video appearedvand it has helped me so much since in my approach to sewing. I still have the quote on my Google Keep. I've now been sewing for almost two years and I'm at that point where my work is getting visibly better, but paradoxically you then feel even worse when you still make rookie mistakes 😂 But you know what? It's just rows of stitching. Have a cry, take a walk, whatever, unpick 'em and move on 🙌🏻

      @PatternScout  Рік тому +1

      Ok this comment makes my day! So nice, thank you! (And I admire Bernadette Banner so much, she is great!) And I still make lots of mistakes (definitely said a few curse words and wanted to cry a little bit at least once with this coat haha...the camera just wasn't rolling in those moments)! This one took me so much longer than I originally thought it would! Have a cry and take a walk is great advice! :)

    Who would ever say anything negative about a project you spent so much time on? That would be so weird and pointless of that person!
    Your coat turned out really great!😃 You should be so proud, I'm envious! I've only been sewing since late 2021, mainly bags and then a pair of pants. The idea of me making a coat seems lofty, but it's mainly because I'm lazy, lol. 🙃
    Would you ever consider making a sewing vlog about how you made that white knit button down top you wear in some of your videos? You know, it's so hard to find a button down sewing pattern in knit fabric. But yours looks cozy and perfect. I would like to know how it was constructed. 🙂

      Thanks so much! I'm so proud of this make--one of my all time faves! I have a video from several months back where I made mesh shirts, and the buttonup version is the same technique I used for that knit shirt I'm wearing in the video. I wear that white shirt a lot! Love it!

    Nice construction of the coat. for myself i wd have made it in black or navy but the green looks good too, or perhaps a camel tan would look classy also. I wd have put the side slot pockets instead; less bulk. Ive had a classic navy pea jacket with the great gold buttons for 25 yrs but recently looked for a new one, couldnt find one anywhere under $400 for what i wanted. So I got a basic single line buttoned felt coat for $40 US; got 8 fancy gold buttons which, after removing its two wooden type buttons, will attach the gold buttons vertically as per a pea jacket look. I got the coat in a L instead of M so I can pull the front of it over enough to have the two vertical lines of buttons be on the centre front of it, by adding inside hook closures instead of functional buttons. I will shorten the coat along the bottom to make it a jacket by cutting off about 8 to 10 inches of the coats lower edge. while the lower lining edge is open, for extra warmth, I will cut/measure/insert one rear panel of dense thin material and stick it up into that full back gap, sew along the outside edges with black thread (on black material) evenly along the 3 sides to secure it in place; cut 2 front panels, do the same, fold/iron the lower lining edge over evenly to form a folded hem, same with the outer material, both folds face inward to meet/match each other, then sew 1 line of stitching to secure that in place. black thread on black material/lining, wont see much of it.
    I was thinking of using a thin semi stiff felt for those extra panels, but its $25/meter for it! I have some thin flexible black upholstery material i got yrs ago sitting idle, wont cost me a dime, super easy to work with/sew/cut plus its windproof! crazy idea but i will try it; will keep its shape, free, very flexible.
