Fishbone is a fantastic band - they have every right to be HUGE. The problem was that when the broken out, late 80s-early 90s, what the labels wanted was hip-hop or grunge and Fishbone didn't fit anywhere. They might have made it anyway but Sony dropped them after the guitarist had a breakdown and the bassist got accused of kidnapping when he tried to help. Just a perfect storm of bad luck for a GREAT band.

Without Fishbone there is no.... RHCP, No Doubt... too bad Fishbone is not recognized. They are a true inspiration. Any day you wake up in a bad mood listen to 3 Fishbone songs and it will turn your day around.
If you, or anybody else reads this toss me 3 fishbone songs worth checking out and digging deeper into the lyrics on. I've always enjoyed Ska as part of the greater punk genre but it's a really thin genre for bands and as awesome as Streetlight is they're a really high effort listen so it wears thin after awhile. Long story short, anybody have 3 fishbone songs that'll brighten my day just from the energy and message? Edit: Hard nevermind on that, read the lyrics to this song (that's already stuck in my head on the second play) and through on Truth and Soul and WOW. The size of the rock covering this record up must be huge. You could have told me this record came out in 2023 and they were touring with the Interrupters or Ed Sheeran and I would've believed you, it's that far ahead of 1988.
@@pulleyfm8585 If you haven't already, be sure to check out "The Reality of My Surroundings" (1991), "Give a Monkey a Brain and He'll Swear He's the Center of the Universe" (1993), and the "Bonin' in the Boneyard EP" (1990 - esp. "Hide Behind My Glasses") - and fuck it, grab the "Fishbone EP" (1985) and some select bits from "In Your Face" (1986) as well - but yeah, "Truth and Soul" is probably the most solid from start-to-finish, IMHO. Criminally underrated!
While I generally agree that Fishbone is under-appreciated, I will just say that RHCP did try. They give an explicit shout-out in the song "Good Time Boys". :)
@@pulleyfm8585 glad you seem to have answered your own question. As for their lyrics "brightening your day", I dunno, because a lot of them are talking about some dark themes in ways. The song title "Sunless Saturday" comes to mind in that regard. Or, as a sort of contrast-but-not, "Everyday Sunshine". And yet, either way, the groove will still brighten your day for so much of it, so... yeah, I hope you've since explored more, and been glad to have done so.
rebjiii Kanye is very talented actually. Maybe not the best of the best of the best. But he has created some atmospheric, witty and brilliant songs. If you actually listen to what he's talking about in his rants, it actually makes sense and is very philosophical. Yep I did just say that. Have a nice day rebjiii🙂.

Best band of all time. Saw them several times in the 80's. Ska, Metal, Alternative, Funk geniuses. They started so much and so many bands copied them, but they never hit it really big as they should have.... perhaps because they were far ahead of their time. Truly an original inspiration. Love them.
I met the lead singer, a week ago, and he was awesome! Angelo Moore walked into Urban Outfitters, and my co worker pointed out his eccentric clothing, and pretty soon we got a conversation started. I never heard of Fishbone before, but my music professor said they were a big band in the 80's. I am very honored to have met Angelo Moore, and he told me he will be playing Coachella 2014!
I was born in 85’. As a young teenager in the late 90’s, I fell in love with the band known as Sublime. It’s 2020 and I just fell in love with a band I’ve never heard of before. I was watching the movie “Juice”, I saw the Fishbone shirt being worn in the audience at the club. I looked it up because I was curious. Thank the lord. I discovered one of the best bands you’ve never heard of. Rock on y’all, fuck ma and pa!
Hey Angelo, I still remember when you came in to talk to your mom's English class in 1999 or 2000 (can't remember), I was one of the punk kids with The Exploited shirt in class. I still remember you giving that girl the tickets to the No Doubt show, who she also inspired me to get into music as well, since she was a drummer in the high school band. You influenced me to get more into music and I started my own hardcore band in 2004 (Fed Up, now defunct). Love Fishbone and everything you've done for the music scene here in Los Angeles. You're a great inspiration Angelo, appreciate you so much.
Angelos dad was the speech counselor at my high school (Birmingham) so Angelo was on campus sometimes... One day I saw him and he was wearing his top hat, cane, marijuana suit, boots... the usual... and I invited him to come with me to my drama class and do his poetry... it was the best day ever and the look on my drama teachers face... priceless!
@@jonnierosen5325 That's really cool, Angelo is a great guy. I can only imagine what he read in your teachers class lol. His mom was my English teacher at Reseda High School, just down the street from Birmingham. I would see Angelo all the time, really nice person. Miss those days.
I'm on a ska binge. Just wanted to say, these guys are a cut above the rest. Talent, presence, and pure music. I'm probably going to download all the albums I can find. This shit sounds so good.
Such a LOW ENERGY band, eh? hahahaha... I always go back to this one.. sad story.. but it makes me happy just the same. Big talent. Big hearts. I frikkin MISS those days when we could catch a ska or reggae show every weekend. Need the next wave to hit.
In the month following 9/11/01, I saw Fishbone at the Limelight in NYC. We were all feeling rather disheartened and frankly depressed. For many of us, this was the first time we were out of the house since that day. We were chanting for the fellaz to take the stage. They made us wait. When they finally appeared, Angelo goes, "Calm down people, y'all gonna get exactly what you fuckin' deserve!" And then they launch into "Party at Ground Zero"! Of course. Not too much of an exaggeration to say Fishbone saved me that night. Thank you thank you thank you.
Always have and always will love Fishbone. My band has had the opportunity to share the stage with them 3 times and each time has been memorable. Most recently was Ska In The Park this past June in Pomona, CA. There's still great music out there, but you just have to search it out. Don't let the record companies feed you what you should listen to. Or if you've got the desire, write it and play it yourself. It all starts with a fresh idea. Peace and Unity in the Ska Community!
I've worked in two of the finest live music clubs, in two of the finest "music cities" in the nation (Chicago and Minneapolis), and Fishbone is still two of the finest shows I've ever seen, including one where the RHCP came out to an already fully satisfied crowd that Fishbone had just summarily destroyed.
ABSOLUTE RIOT!!! Love Fishbone. They should be next to be induced to the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame. Will never forget hanging with them in South Carolina and Las Vegas. Awesome times. "Party at Ground Zero" everybody.
I've never loved any band like this. Awesome beyond stupid words. And the meanings of their songs transcend silly words anyhow. This is the true soul music. I think the industry wasn't havin' it. Ya' all know.
The first fishbone song I ever heard was "swim" which as on the Last Action Hero soundtrack. My 11th grade english teacher gave me a fishbone record to listen to. I didn't really dig them back then, but I've recently started checking out a lot of their music on here since I am seeing them in concert next weekend and now I'm thinking, "Holy Sh**, these guys are amazing."
Tight as all hell. As entertaining and engaged as hell. Man they were (are?) a great band. Just like Bad Brains turned me on to punk Fishbone turned me on to ska. The best.

The first time I saw Angelo at the omni in Oakland CA. was before they even went onstage he was just in the crowd watching bands, he was dressed in a green shark skin mod suit, doc Martens and had a dread mohawk. This was 1986- you didn't see brothers dressed like hm, hell you didn't see anyone dressed like that. He was so full of energy, then I see him get on stage and him and fishbone KILLED. They were so fucking good. He was all over the place on stage just like this video. Great great great band.
These guys should be huge buy now considering this song is over twelve years old it's so sad only a few really knows about the band and their existence I just read an article on Yahoo where they are going on tour 2022 but it's so sad I am just finding out about this amazing band
I've had the privilege of seeing Fishbone 3 times. Unfortunately, 2 of those times were without Fish on drums. Robmonster1, I also saw them in '96 and they blew my mind. Fishbone never got the commercial credit that other bands half as good get.
The best thing about this band is that they were from los Angels where rap was the big thing there, but they totally went against that and went punk! Fucking awesome
Actually he isn't confused at all. While most of their more popular tracks trended ska, they literally played a hodgepodge of most everything. Ska, punk, funk, metal, soul and they have always done them all extremely well. Best live act of all time in my opinion having seen them five times dating back to 1993, most recently last November.
Jenna Gass he has his dates wrong. These guys were performing BEFORE rap became fully popularized in Los Angeles. When they came out funk acts like Parliament Funkadelic, Roger n Zapp, The Gap Band, etc were big in the black community moreso than rap was. They were still unique as far as black bands go tho...
I remember these guys playing SNL in the fall of '91 or thereabouts. They were right on the cusp of breaking it into the big time but just missed the bus. They could not follow up the genius of Truth and Soul, but they had talent to spare.
if a band like fishbone came out now, it would blow douches like bruno mars, and lil wayen out of the water! they would inspire a whole new generation of music, songs about family and just a happier, not gettin down in da club, kind of music! kids need this, more of a moral point on life. not everyone is a gangsta, or whatever hip hop artists call them selves. im not some old guy either, i'm 16 and seriously worried about what my kids will listen to.
saw them live ones in sweden/stockholm...was a magic show...so much energy...singer dived into the adience from the balcony of the clubfloor, a hight that would have freaking broke his back if we hadnt catch him :D
The forces of the universe aligned and for a few short years emerged the greatest live band of all time . . and thank God I saw them live three times!! Truth and Soul Tour and then . .
Hey Angelo , I got clean and moved to cali. Ya still owe me that jam. I miss ya( I am surround by rudies😒). Love bro. This 0i!✊ is for you. I’m still skankin.
There I was, there I was, there I was, in uniform with M16, in the midst of Desert Storm. My sister sent me this music. So cool. Still I rememeber it ( :
When this album came out I was playing in a band with my best friends. We listened to this album everyday and we were so blown away by it. One night I said to our drummer "if Fishbone doesn't become the biggest band in the world there is something seriously wrong with the music industry." Unfortunately, decades later I was proven right ... Love Fishbone forever !!!!!!
Sadly, they did not have the right complexion to receive the industry push that other bands who were half as talented received during the 1980s and 1990s. Let's not forget Blotto and Flock of Seagulls made it to MTV before Prince and MJ because they didn't show black artists for the first year and a half. Except for the biggest crossover acts, black artists struggled to get on MTV and get that level of exposure. More than anyone, Fishbone were the heir apparent to Parliament Funkadelic as a band for me - rock hard, funk hard and play everything in between with soul, precision, and passion. Musically, lyrically, vocally, and in terms of performance, they were light years ahead of their so-called peers. Give a Monkey a Brain . . . is still AMAZING. I loved the RHCP when I was in high school, but Fishbone opening for them seemed like a cruel joke. Unfortunately, it is reality and the trajectory of their careers says it all.

Dude this song is almost 40 years old.
GREAT SONG!
I've had the privilege of seeing Fishbone 3 times. Unfortunately, 2 of those times were without Fish on drums. Robmonster1, I also saw them in '96 and they blew my mind. Fishbone never got the commercial credit that other bands half as good get.
DO NOT MISS A FISHBONE SHOW.
Awesome band, socially aware, and fantastic live !!! They don't make bands like this very often, so I'm glad to have seen them live !!!
I have this on vinyl - love, love, love Fishbone
This band was awesome
The One and Only Fish and Da Crew... Mad Fishbone Classic Here.. Totally Original and Unique..There's Just No Other Group Like Em ☺☺😎👊💯💯
The best thing about this band is that they were from los Angels where rap was the big thing there, but they totally went against that and went punk! Fucking awesome
Ska, actually :)
Dragon Tamer lol you're confused
What a racist statement, bro. Geez...
The fact that these guys get very little recognition is down right criminal. Record companies and radio stations today suck.
back in time
Today they would be the Kings of the world
I remember these guys playing SNL in the fall of '91 or thereabouts. They were right on the cusp of breaking it into the big time but just missed the bus. They could not follow up the genius of Truth and Soul, but they had talent to spare.
Most energized band I have seen great music
if a band like fishbone came out now, it would blow douches like bruno mars, and lil wayen out of the water! they would inspire a whole new generation of music, songs about family and just a happier, not gettin down in da club, kind of music! kids need this, more of a moral point on life. not everyone is a gangsta, or whatever hip hop artists call them selves. im not some old guy either, i'm 16 and seriously worried about what my kids will listen to.
saw them live ones in sweden/stockholm...was a magic show...so much energy...singer dived into the adience from the balcony of the clubfloor, a hight that would have freaking broke his back if we hadnt catch him :D
Congrats on one million views! Fishbone is red hot! Should be 100 million honestly.
Gotta love that energy.
I’m grateful Wendell & Wild brought me here!💖
These guys are soooooooooooooo original.
Holy damn the singer is insanly cool :D
Angelo Moore is indeed awesome. They are all great guys actually.
true
Yes angilo is
I saw them open for Red Hot Chili Peppers during the summer of 1989. Damn good show with a ton of energy!
Me too!
ahead of time.... please reborn fish!
This song is so awesome, generational dysfunction. Gottta love it!
Saw them in Birmingham, uk. They were amazing.
This is a different version I haven't heard. STILL LOVE FISHBONE!!!
Wow!
Ah, u-uh, uh
Ah, u-uh, uh
Ah, u-uh, uh
Ah, u-uh, uh
Ah, u-uh, uh
Ah, u-uh, uh
Ah...
There once was a ma that wanted her
There once was a pop that wanted her
I know she's confused, she's my blood sister
She told me the blues, as she start to shiver
Only a child in the middle of a war
She's a problem child now because of a divorce
Hey, ma and pa
What the hell is wrong with y'all?
Hey, ma and pa
What the hell is wrong with y'all?
Well, there's lots of moneys
For all the attorneys
It's not just a fight for child custody
'Cause ma and pa's revenge is making little sister bleed
Fussin' and fightin' through a family life
Make her wanna take drugs and be out of line
Hey, ma and pa
What the hell is wrong with y'all?
Hey, ma and pa
What the hell is wrong with y'all?
Hey, ma and pa
What the hell is wrong with y'all?
Hey, ma and pa
Fighting for love on an angel's feather
Why don't y'all watch video together?
Oh, yeah
Oh-oh
Oh-ah
Well, it's three the hard way
Doin' it the wrong way
Ma hates pa, pa hates ma
Little sister say: "What the hey-hey?"
Well there's an evil streak there
With a righteous leak, I fear
Well how?
A-ha, that's why a child goes astray
To live a life another day
Mom-and-a-pop in a family fury
Brother tried to say: "Little sister, don't worry"
Hey, ma and pa
What the hell is wrong with y'all?
Hey, ma and pa
What the hell is wrong with y'all?
Hey, ma and pa
Why'd the family rise and fall?
Hey, ma and pa
Well, it's three the hard way
You're doin' it the wrong way
Ma hates pa, pa hates ma
Little sister say: "What the hey?"
Hey, ma and pa
What the hell is wrong with y'all?
Hey, ma and pa
What the hell is wrong with y'all?
Hey, ma and pa
What the hell is wrong with y'all?
Hey, ma and pa
Fighting for love on an angel's feather
Why don't y'all watch video together?
The true pioneers.
FANTASTIC SONG❣️
Love this song soooo much.
Best. Live. Band. Ever.
I remember meeting them at Venice Beach way back ...cool brothers
What a freaking great band ,love em
I love this song ❤😂from ..!
Criminally underrated.
Fishbone 4ever. What amazing song can't they write. Charlie Down on collapsible keyboard stand Dirty Walt on embouchure getting me hyped every time
fishbone aren't the same band they once were, but when they were in their prime no band band was better at what they did. they were masters of their genre and one of the best period. unfortunately they were under the radar. doesn't matter pick up their old albums and be blown away. still better than 90% of the shit now.
brought u back crazy innit it
