- A mod which was more like a full game than a simple carset, Grand Prix 1979 brought all the teams, drivers and circuits to rFactor. Dubbed "Grand Prix Legends 2", or the Ground Effects Simulation, GP79 was instantly one of the most popular mods and served as a blueprint for many future projects. Covering the dynamic 1979 Formula 1 Season in stunning detail, GP79 still lives on to this day with its many conversions to more modern platforms such as Automobilista and rFactor 2.

I read someones comment about faster they were talking about how they found the song interesting, a personal story about life on tour and being part of the Beatles, and the pressures of that life but no, it’s just about race cars, cuz George liked race cars

The F1 79 demo that came out around August 2006 was the only reason I bought rfactor. I deleted the base content and drove the hell out of the Renault, Ferrari, Williams, and Ligier by myself around the 1979 tracks until I eventually found a league to race with. I didn't get a PC until 2003, so this was my intro into F1 history and made a tremendous impression on me. By the time we gave up on rfactor around 2014, I'd still say this mod was in my top 5 all time.
On a side note: Very brave of you to bring back your old intro music at the risk of losing your ad revenue, but I can't deny it brought a smile to my face.
Happy to see you also have installed our HistorX v1.96 mod (4:00). I'm the guy that made the physics (always after Niels did his magic!).
I'd love to see you do a feature on it some day!
PS: The '79 mod was one of those that I kept coming to when I wasn't racing in our own one. Definitely is special and you did a great job of capturing it here!
Love to see you revisiting once again the legend that is rFactor 1! ^^ GPC 1979 was a fine mod with some of the most iconic cars in Formula One.
Loved this vid and this period of F1. Heap of my all time favs being featured throughout: De Angelis, Piquet, Watson, Lafitte, Depailler, Arnoux, Scheckter, Villeneuve, the list goes on…

I lived to play this mod, everyday, all day, with my friends, back in 2009. It's a masterpiece! "Faster than a bullet from a guuuun, he's faster then everyoneee" gives me goosebumps every time

I was at this Long Beach race irl, sitting in an office window in the building on the right as you go up the hill. The office was on a corner so we could see from the Shoreline straight to the top of the Pine St hill where they'd peel into the pits, about half the circuit in total. That building's gone now but I watched four Long Beach GPs from there.
This mod is awesome, and yes, it is why I originally got rFactor. I ran a full-length season in the late 2000s with a Ligier and won the championship (kept score myself with Excel). Very satisfying.

I put so many hours into driving these cars back in my school years. So much fun!
the intro gave me huge nostalgia where i got no internet connection in home so i need to get the mod through an internet cafe with less than 100 kb/s speed! I don't know why my mod version doesn't have the williams but i still got a ton of fun playing with it.
Wish you'd shown the fascinating Arrows A2. This was trying the same thing as the Lotus 80 but if anything was more daring. Tried to sort of start the venturi with aero over the front suspension arms. Sadly had the same downsides. Still, an oddly beautiful car in it's original configuration.
I hope you play this mod again sometime, this video was fantastic and to my shame I never knew this mod existed! 1979 was the start of my first proper interest in F1 although i'd been taking to the British GP a few times before but was far too young to understand although do remember James Hunt being driven on the back of a truck around the circuit to celebrate as the winner in 1977. It was a simpler time 🙂
I raced the Arrows A2 in Mybroga League one season, I loved that Car! WarSteiner sponsor colors was my Fav!

Like Grand Prix Legends, RF1's GP79 mod was an absolute game changer. It truly put RF1 on the map. The league I joined ran this almost exclusively for years and had some of the absolute best racing. Ah, the salad days.
Longtime fan of yours from before you took the long break and I've got to say I got a massive rush of nostalgia hearing that intro song. I still half expect to hear it every new '66 Season episode.

Except its an AI series. Anyway, as for people actually running a series with this mod, if you know where to look, like grand prix rejects and classic motorsports hub, you should be able to find a few people interested in running a proper championship with you.

My personal fav mod of all time! I still run the rfactor2 version though it is a little bit different since it doesn’t have the early car versions (i’d give an arm for them) and top speed is slightly lower. The other thing i can’t believe is that there is not a track pack for the 79 season made for rfactor2.
If anyone knows how to get the trackpad and the whole set of cars please let me know, you’ll get a free arm sent to your door!
Its somewhat of a Game Stockcar / Automobilista 0.1 with Renato doing lots of work on this, and somehow my complaints about the mod made him consider me for the GSC / AMS games (I don't understand that either..) :D

About Copersucar: their best year was '78 (2º place in Brasil!, 5º place in Germany), but when the next year, with the necessity of ground effect car's, they decide to go to a former Lotus employee to desing the car. And it's a failure! Legends say when Emerson took the first shakedown of the '79 car in Interlagos he realize the car is not working, with this designer saying he don't understand the ground effect concept. And with the press here in Brasil (despite the Military Dictadorship helping then with the suport of the Embraer in the begging of the team, let them use the wind tunnel of the company) already joking about the team not wining like Emerson did on Lotus and Maclaren day's, the situation got very tense that day with Wilson (rumor, I can't confirm this) almost trowing punchs in the designer.... And the '79 became the pivotial year of the downfall of Fittipaldi's Brothers dream of a F1 team.
Ralph Bellamy was the ex Lotus (and ex Brabham and McLaren) designer. Don't know how I remember that.

I still remember this mod. The Ferrari was the first car I tried around Interlagos when I got my first proper wheel (a logitech dfgt) back in 2011. Really liked playing it. Good memories.

Very cool tour of Watkins Glen! I was looking for my young self on the hillsides overlooking the “boot” ;^) , but actually this sim is replicating a few years later than I was there. My last time there was that fateful day that inspired this chicane. Glad they got rid of it.
I've picked this mod's brains for the past few weeks, it's genuinely amazing the amount of detail placed into each car and track, it has aged incredibly well for releasing in 2007? If I'm not mistaken.
only somewhat recently I was able to set the game just as I want it, all the really worthy classics and tracks are in. still my favorite race sim
This and the f1 88 mod are the only rfactor mods I've played back in the day, and using keyboard. I've got to try this again with my wheel, now 15 years later

Man, I played this a lot back in the day. I was always interested in classic F1, but this mod got me even more heavily into it.
I sure hope at some point you'll do a full 1979 season using this mod. Maybe Richie Axleson wouldn't be too old to race in '79, but if he is I'm sure he has a younger brother 😉

34:55 - Hector Rebaque was actually racing a Lotus 79 for most of 1979; he commissioned a new chassis from Penske, but that car wasn’t ready until the last three races of the season.
I used to race a whole online season with it, it was so good.
Now this was magnificent! The 1979 season was when I really started taking an interest in F1, and this mod exemplifies that period perfectly. The Long Beach circuit is very different to the one they use nowadays, and I can't figure out why the circuit operators shortened the final hairpin so soon after the left-hand sweeper - I really hate that last bend.
What I do love is the advertising hoardings of the period, in particular the Nike hoardings.
The ground effects vs turbo era gave rise to a whole load of different car designs, such as that Arrows A9 - surely the wingiest of all wing cars. This was when engineers and designers were give more free rein than what they are able to do nowadays.
Just one thing - how come you were able to play George Harrison's "Faster" without getting a copyright strike??

Can you do hour long Grand Prix's Computer cars only and we view the Grand Prix, the 1970's would be brilliant with you commentating on the AI races through an entire season. Could be it's own series. We'd all be transfixed. Keep up the vids GP, excellent and compulsive watching!
This mod was the best and the era was golden for modding ingeneral for rFactor.
The different historically accurate car physics, the way you had to set up the cars to make the ground effect work, sounds & visuals, just amazing times.

The 312T3 did not have any underbody aero, and tbh, the 312T4 wasn't really a ground effect car either. AFAIK it had wing shaped sidepods like the Lotus 78 did, because the flat 12 engine didn't allow them to run a full ground effect undertray. IIRC Ferrari's first real ground effect car didn't happen until 81 when they switched to smaller turbos for the 126C.
The Lotus 80 failed because it porpoised like mad and supposedly that was a result of how under engineered the chassis/suspension were. According to Mario it had tons of downforce but was scary to drive because the aero balance was constantly moving around because of the suspension and monocoque not being stiff enough to handle the loads.
Man the Ligier always had the best liveries imo
You gotta do a season with a mod like this. It would be interesting to see a title run with williams. A nippy little dart shaped fw06 and the “lotus 79 with all the flaws ironed out” fw07. It would be fascinating to see the contrast between the two and how close you can get at the end of the season.

16:42 - Points- and standings-wise, it was 1978, 17 points and 7th in the Constructor's championship.
Slightly sad the team roster wasn't quite complete, the small Kauhsen team was missing.

What HUD are you using? Great video once again. Best F1 mod for rF1. I spent 1000s of hours playing rF1 probably 10000s of miles driven. Great sim.
For whatever reason, this just doesn't look like 'fun'. I appreciate you showing us different sims/mods, I guess this era of F1 was almost clinical in a drivers approach and it was more about the car than the driver.
As it's always been and always will be. Even Fangio spent his career chasing the "best car" from season to season, including jumping teams in the middle of a season. Even if everyone drives the "same car," some will always be better prepared and setup, which is why only three Indycar teams have win championships in the past 20 years and only two in the last 10 in spite of it being a spec series for most of that time (the "competitiveness" they always talk about is an illusion). Hendrick's won about half in Nascar in the last 30 years, etc.
Great mod. I loved the long Interlagos and the wonky roller coaster Jarama. Organized racing on Race2Play put it all together for me!
The first race at Long Beach made me realise how much of the more recognisable modern circuit is the layout that it is by choice and not by necessity. I've always assumed they're racing on the only streets there are and yet this layout in the same location is almost unrecognisable except for the first and last corner.
There's been so much construction that the circuit's needed to be changed several times. In 1979 the Hyatt Hotel (if it's still a Hyatt) that adjoins the convention center wasn't even built yet, nor the aquarium. Now they use the only route available to them.
I've been addicted to the Lotus 79 in iracing, but missing the immersive factor of racing a true-to-life grid. You're videos are always amazing, and bring out what I like in simracing the most, so thanks for showcasing another mod to try out!
I second this as someone who isn’t the fastest or most consistent. I feel like getting a sim and a setup to be as immersive as possible makes the most fun experience for me. Whether you’re trying to recreate historical events or put yourself as a fictional driver in that time period (a la the codemasters f1 games) it can be a fun way to experience something that isn’t possible to experience or would be exponentially more expensive to do the real thing.
@@HallucinatingHedgehogs Oh yea absolutely agree. Having less time to put into iracing since the start of the pandemic, it makes hard to keep up with the faster guys so I just kinda end up in no man's land. And that's not really that fun, and at the end of the day, it's all about having fun racing!

What are the odds, I was thinking of this mod today when I saw one of those microcar made by Ligier, and remembered me of how the JS11 was my favourite in this mod.
I still have the 2.1 version on my external HDD, but do you suggest the updated one you linked in the description? How does it feel compared to the 2.1?
Speaking of Dijon, the track reminds me of El Captain in GT4. Wonder if it was any inspiration, for the way the turns and elevation changes flow? It's simply the way it flows that made me think of it, reminded me of two or three corner sections from El Captain.
I think it would be very cool if you did a period perfect full season.

The great thing about rFactor is that it supports no pit speed limit, as was the case back then. :)
some quick things about the fittipaldi team, at 1980 season the team had keke rosberg and emmerson as their drivers, and a recently acquired engineer called adryan newey (yep he started with fittipaldi) what made the team fold was the fact that they only used brazilian sponsors wich with the increase pressure of the press for wins got tired of the lack of results and started pulling out of the team, now imagine what could have been for fittipaldi if they stayed in the business 3 more years and had given time for andryan to work...
The Alfa in the Brabham was a V12, not a flat 12.
I remember watching that '79 US Grand Prix at Long Beach. By the way, a true "Villeneuve" move at that turn would have been to power slide it all the way through...I've got an idea for ya'...Let's say Richie Axelson has/had a brother...His name was Robert ( Bobby)...And he's a little younger and instead of going to formula car road racing path he was a circle track racer. I don't know how many late '50's/60's sprint car and midget sims are out there ( or SuperMod sims)??? If not, you had Richie racing in the '66 Daytona 500 and at Riverside. Maybe a whole scenario around that historical concept could be done. If so, I only have 1 request....No Fords!!!!

Speaking of Rosberg... It was he, who should have been there in Dijon driving the Wolf car instead of Hunt, who actually retired after Monaco GP, failing to qualify there, Wolf then hired Rosberg to drive the rest of the season, starting from French GP.
These cars would actually porpoise too and more severely then the current ones. Gary Anderson I think said one team(I believe the ligier) was so bad at Italy down the straight the front wheels would take off the ground before slamming the nose into the ground then taking off again.

Does anyone know why in Niki Lauda's Ferrari 312 T2 they thought it would be a good idea to have the needle on the rev counter be the same color as the gauge behind it? Seriously did someone decide it was to easy to read at 180mph? GREAT VIDEO BTW LOL

Wow I've never seen ground effect skirts on the nose of an f1 car. Looks like it needs to trim it's nose hairs lol otherwise I like it. Great video
