  • For some reason I enjoy the challenge and pain of very difficult climbs. This is one of the hardest I have found! Thanks to Jeff Lenosky for inspiring me to try this one. I saw his video, then saw this climb and did not think it was the same spot! Crazy what you can get up with the right line. Hannah joined me on this ride with a borrowed Ibis Ripley. She was a bit hesitant being on a borrowed bike but enjoyed the extra cushion!

    dude!! you're an animal!! that lower section was SO STEEP, I totally came in from the side to avoid that! SO RAD to watch you slay it!

      Thanks Jeff! I couldn't remember your line on the beginning when I initially rode it, so I just went for the straight shot and it kind of worked. It was a big leg and lung burner though! Thanks again for the inspiration, for some reason I love tough climbs like these. 👍

    Most mountain bikers: ride up to go down fast or techy. Pat Smage: ride up to find more ways to ride up. Great video!!

      Haha that is true. Not sure why but the difficulty and pain of a tough climb is worth the feeling of making it. Riding down is okay too, I guess...

    Hey Pat Smage! That line up the rock that you rode was freakin off the charts difficult! Thanks to Hannah Smage for the awesome camera work! Thanks for all the post ride editing! Ride ride ride!

      I agree! Glad we were able to show it looked that way on camera, but dang does it look wild in person! Always the bummer about filming but glad you could tell. 👍

    It's so cool to see you skillfully figure out these insanely difficult lines. It's the polar opposite of a lot of UA-cam mountain bike content, where riders without your skills just send it and hope for the best.

      Glad to hear you enjoy my style! Definitely different than most, but challenging myself and figuring something out in a technical way is a great feeling. 👍

    Pat, that was great to watch... lots of sweet scenic footage! I wanted to see you do this a long time ago after I saw Jeff's video a few years ago. Glad to see you ride the same climb feature! Initially I wondered if that was the same place where I saw Jeff. That was very respectable of you to mention Jeff in your video and description. Maybe you'll hear back from him soon, I sent him the video link in IG :-) It would be so nice to see you guys get out and ride together!

    • @PatSmage
      @PatSmage  4 роки тому +1

      It is such a nice area! The midwest isn't so bad after all... it feels like out west up there though! It would be awesome to ride with Jeff some day. I saw his trials show when I was a kid and it really inspired me and he continues to. 👍

    • @biketothetop
      @biketothetop 4 роки тому

      @@PatSmage that's an interesting fact about how you were inspired by Jeff! Jeff's been non-motorized, but just this month he put out a YT video riding an eMTB :-)
      I bet it would still be a challenge on a pedal assist eMTB to get up feature and make the left turn without a pedal strike.

    • @biketothetop
      @biketothetop 4 роки тому

      P.S. ...and yes, I'm glad to see you have a nice natural rock playground that is not too far from Wisconsin. The west is best for me... I made that observation and a commitment to move from my growing-up time in Pennsylvania (then after 1st engineering job in Detroit, Michigan) to the West Coast, based on my experience
      in my 20's in PA college, when I spent 2 summers hitchhiking and backpacking mountain trails in the West USA. For some people, that's a tough choice if they're leaving behind lots of friends and family, but that wasn't my concern.

    What do you think of the mara pro vs inline? I'm looking at both for my ripley.

    • @PatSmage
      @PatSmage  3 роки тому +1

      I like both in their own ways. It depends on your trails a bit. The pro is better for rough stuff. It almost feels like it has more travel. Think of the pro as a true enduro shock while the inline is more for xc, but it can still handle quite a bit. The mojo is tight with a water bottle so the inline allows more room for that. If you have the room and ride pretty aggressive, I’d say the pro is the better choice. If you ride smoother more cross country style trails most of the time, the inline would be better.

    It is simple sick you can climb like that with flats

    • @PatSmage

      Haha I will never go away from flats all together but this just made me want to try some clips once in a while.
