Detlef Schrempf: The greatest German player in NBA history… not named Dirk Nowitzki | FPP

- Detlef Schrempf moved from Germany to the US to attend his senior year at Centralia high school, this kicked off the beginning of the first truly great success when It came to European NBA players. Schrempf played 4 years for the University of Washington Huskies, where he helped lead them to their first tournament appearance in almost a decade, alongside fellow German Christian Welp. Schrempf was selected by the Dallas Mavericks in the 1985 NBA draft where he was stuck behind established players like Mark Aguirre, Rolando Blackman and Derek Harper, and even though he played on some great Mavs teams of the 80s, he never got a chance to show how good he was.
But when he was traded to the Indiana Pacers in 1989, he finally got a chance as he would team with players such as Reggie Miller, Chuck Person and Rik Smits in a sixth man role, where his stint with the pacers would see him win back to back sixth man of the year awards, as in 1991, he became the first European to win the award. He also gained his first All star selection in 1993, again becoming the first European NBA all star in history. He was eventually traded to the Seattle Supersonics where he had his most team success as part of the great Sonics teams of the late 90s that included Gary Payton, Shawn Kemp and Hersey Hawkins which culminated in an NBA Finals appearance vs. Michael Jordan, Scottie Pippen, Dennis Rodman and the 72 win Chicago Bulls. Schrempf would also rack up two more all star selections in Seattle. Schrempf spent 2000 and 2001 on the Portland Trailblazers in a bench role, where he would join another legendary European in Arvydas SAbonis, before callin it a career after 16 seasons in 2001.
And when it was all said and done, Schrempf had an extremely successful career full of accolades and a 10 year stretch where he averaged over 15 points on over 47% shooting every season. And a career like that needs to be talked about, so that’s why today’s video is looking at The Grand Teuton, Detlef Schrempf.

Detlef would be killing in this era of basketball
Him and Chris mullen both
@Youngsta Mullen no doubt would be as well
@@GHOST91141 lol I use to think they was the same people when I was younger lol. But grew up I found out Chris mullen was with Golden State RUN TMC. But detlef good too espically when he was at Seattle. Point is they was 3pt specialist B4 Kyle korver JJ Reddick or even peja. those two was 3pt shooters these days they could hit about 6 threes a game easily I know that's a stretch but these days I think those two would easily shoot the 3 ball.
@@Youngsta897 They would. Klay Thompson type.
#TogetherEvery1AchievesMore TEAM‼️
Detlef walked so Dirk could run. So underrated.
Yeah Schrempf is not being given enough credit for his role in promoting the game in Europe and Germany in particular. He went to the US really early and thus was kinda forgotten by the German public. His popularity was not comparable to Dirk but as you said, he walked to Dirk could run.
I'll take detlef over dirk
Facts... 💯 Deadlef his shots were deadly
@@peewee3030 You will take Detlef over MVP, Finals MVP leader of one of the most impressive Playoff runs in NBA history Dirk?
That's just wild.
@@peewee3030his game was certainly more well-rounded. Dirk was only exceptional at shooting/scoring. Detlef was skilled and productive in many areas.
This will be a top basketball channel in no time.
Great work and tons of replay value. It's like going through a collection of basketball cards.
Straight uPP💯
People always say MJ didn’t beat anybody to puff up Lebron. That Sonics team had prime Gary Payton, Shawn Kemp and Detlef Schrempf. All those dudes were All-NBA talent at their peak.
every team Jordan beat was full of dogs
Detlef should be in the Naismith Hall of Fame IMO.
Detlef is a underrated legend in my book, this dude gave teams work whenever he played against them.
He would be first ballot hall of famer for underrated players if they had a hof for underrated players
He was my favorite NBA player ever. I have a poster of him on my wall and a jersey from the Sonics. So versatile and skilled. Not many players like him now or ever.
I used to love Detlef Schremph and that Sonics team.
My man he was that dude for Seattle and Indiana salute to him 💯💪💪💪
The best duo in NBA Jam for me was Shawn Kemp and Detlef Schrempf.
As a Suns fan he killed us while in Seattle and winning 6th man with Indiana twice over Dan Majerle. Tremendous player who I have mad respect for.
This man’s grind is crazy, big things coming for this channel
I was born in Seattle in 1973, where I grew up. Sonics and Blazers fan. Japanese-American. I have these to say: "Det....,.Lef......SCHREMPF!!" And, "Detlef Schrempf, Three Points, Three Points Schrempf."
I remember what that's from! 👍😎
Go Rip City!!
@@amberwoods1137 Amber, bless Jim Gracie! I DID wonder, if opposing players liked to his 3-pointers at Seattle, because they liked how Jim Gracie would announce it: "Tracy Murray, Three Points, Three Points, Murray."
I loved him on the Sonics. Nowadays we hear so much about the impact of foreign players like its new. But in my childhood/ teens there was Vlade, Marcilonis, Hakeem, Smits, Shrempf, Petrovic, and Manute Bol. All impactful in some way. So it was never new or big surprise with the future guys other than Jokic, which I admit based on his style is something ive never seen before.
Walton, Sabonis, Ruffland are Joker like players before Joker.
@@sideshowbobsaget8876Walton was similar to Jokic in some ways. Passed similarly out of the high post. Though no offensive player had the full package quite like Jokic. Sabonis is most similar, though much taller and wouldn't have shot 3s like Jok
Sabonis was very athletic in his early days. @@sideshowbobsaget8876
He was a fantastic shooter - he was a good piece of the puzzle in that Super Sonics group.
He was a Beast!
HOF in my book
Detlef was nice... Boy had finesse and swag in his game.. Shooting form was A1.
I like it when you said: "...but that's unfortunately the case with humble players. They don't need & seek the recognition".
Excellent job! I can see you did the research. Thank you for this great recap of Schrempf's career :)
One of my mom's favorite players❤
Loved me some Dale Ellis back in the day. I was 6 in 1979 and the Ellis/X/Chambers squad was the first Sonics team I would ride/die with. 7-9000 fans at the old Seattle Center Coliseum. ❤
You need to do Latrell Sprewell. Really enjoy this content 👍🏼👍🏼 keep up the good work
Det was awesome! He could put the ball on the floor, pull up from practically anywhere, rebound and pass.
I always liked his game. Very underrated as a player.
My favorite player of all time.
You're really on your job 💪💪. Detlef Schrempf was the man in my book he made teams better
Versatile, fearless, dope! Detlef’s wrist hook after his release was crazy..smooth mf. I loved his game
I remember that summer of 99 like yesterday as a Blazer fan. The news broke we got Schrempf, Pippen, and Steve Smith all in one swoop. It was clear he was older but he had some great games in red & black. Contributed in so many ways. That team was stacked too, so he didn't get the amount of shots he used to, but when he was on, he was smooth and efficient. Great player.
Great work man. You put a lot of effort in this interesting career of Detlef Schrempf. Awesome. Enjoyed every Minute. Greetings from Det's hometown Leverkusen.
I saw detlef lifting weights at u Washington summer 94. And I also saw his routine before games. He looked like he was a consistent worker practicing fundamentals.
So underrated his was like that when I was a kid late 90 early 2000
Sarunas Marciulionis 13 Warriors come with it.Keep up the great work 👏 brings back memories.
Leave it to Detlef to look 56 years old while in high school and then basically not aging during decades in the NBA.
This channel is fantastic and will hopefully grow a lot! How about a video about Shawn Bradley? Or as we called him in Germany: Siggi 😅
Greetings from Germany!
Patrick didn’t think ole Detlef would throw back !! Loved the sonics and he was such a great fit
Another guy on my NBA in the zone 2000 roster.
always liked his game when I was a kid
Detlef Schrempf was a good player who deserves more credit overall because he wasn't a selfish person on the court and he would hustle for plays and defend you just as well. And on a side note I have a you tube channel type in Russell Mills May 22, 2017 to find me.
0:26 One of my all-time favorite Dan Majerle highlights.
As a Pacers fan and then NBA Jam fan, Detlef will always be the man in my book. Great video!
Legendary
Real Talk True Player and Raw playing for the Sonics showing how a 6th man can be an integral part of a Great Team soley Missed. Much Respect for Detlef
Love these videos, you’re killing it. Would love a Mitch Richmond episode
Swiss army knife type of player. The shooting at his size combined with the rebounding and playmaking skills, Schrempf really was a player every single team would have wanted.
I just found this page. Great content and put together brilliantly
Thank you
Every team that Det went to, that team won. #winner
That background music is 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥. Can you do a video on Monta Ellis please? Also Ben Wallace
loving the channel.. keep grinding bro 💪 #subscribed
Love this channel, bro. Seriously. Keep'em comin! 👏🙌
Great profiles! Do one on Šarūnas Marčiulionis or Žydrūnas Ilgauskas 🏀
Thanks man
Detlef will always be one of the front men for entertainment720 “cause we go around the world and back for you”
Thank you. He should be talked about more . Thanks for the video man. Love em eh
Title had me in the first half, I’m not gon lie lol
Man thank god I grew up in the 90s to 🙏🏿🙏🏿🙏🏿
I think if Det had more speed, he would've been a Top 75 player
Loved him on sonics team, awesome team!!!
Thank you
thanks for posting all of these some what forgotten gems! also, can you do one on napolean kaufman from the raiders and natrone means from the chargers?
Love the background beat
One of my all time favorite players. I remember they changed it so foreign students couldn’t play varsity sports after he played at Centralia they could only play JV
They thought it was cheating to bring him over lol
What great info, thanks
Interesting fact Detlef was drafted in 1985 and at that time another German was drafted at pick 17, Uwe Blab bet majority of y'all never knew this but now yall do. When they was both going into college Blab was more highly ranked and ended up a Hoosier
You left off that Detlef was the first person to do a Euro step move in the NBA.
Nah that was Elgin Baylor
Shrimp! Do Marbury next
i never understood why detlef was traded for the mavs after the Aguirre trade. they finally opened up a role for him and then traded him for a journeyman big. would've been better served trading Aguirre for a big and calling it a day. Great channel by the way. i watch all your vids and i subscribe.
please make one about Josh Smith ATL and Ricky Davis ✌️✌️✌️ best regards from Serbia
Could you do Nick Van Exel? Great Content!!
Did he not?
Can you do Shaun Livingston mid range assassin
bruh your channel is so fucking dope
Detleff didn't have the scoring ability of Dirk Nowitzki but overall he was a much more complete player. Elegance and versatility, he could score, block, catch rebounds, initiate quick breaks (or finish them), one of my favorite players ever
God I love this channel
Make one on Bob Dandridge
Larry Bird along with Dirk Nowitzi, Detlef Schrempf, Steve Nash were the greatest jump shooters of all time.
Steph Curry, Ray Allen, & Reggie Miller don't exist?
@@cmn225 Why are you getting so defensive about. I have a right to name who I want to. I mean the players you named are good especially Curry, but that's who I think were great jump shooters, brotha.
@@marvinwhittaker not getting defensive at all bro that's just a wild take...everybody you named is legit especially Bird but i'd have named Steph, Reggie, & Ray before Dirk, Schrempf, & Nash
@@cmn225 Okay cool my bad. They're all great shooters. Each player had or has a good jump shot. Curry can shoot way beyond the arc.
@@marvinwhittaker gotta throw Klay in there too
Hey.... Could you do FORGOTTEN PLAYER AND DALLAS MAVERICK GREAT "ROLANDO BLACKMAN"
Check out this one
ua-cam.com/video/GBCnvrpNGug/v-deo.html
I hoped the stacked 2000 Trailblazers team would bring a ring home. They had all the talent they needed, including Schrempf.
He Had fucking game 💯
As a kid we called him deadly scrumf lol idk why we called him that but hey
He was very versatile and maybe a little before his time.
I think he was good for 15-20 PPG in his prime.
Did he also play for Portland during the Jail Blazers Era?
Seattle and Portland were both loaded, but these teams often shot themselves in the foot mentally. I also wonder if these teams were examples of having TOO much talent. There would be a lot of egos, while at the same time it was difficult for players to get a rhythm. It felt like watching those Rick Pitino - Kentucky teams, but at the professional level.
Two separate waves of starter level players.
The Sonics had a window when Jordan retired.
I just didn't see Seattle beating the Bulls in those Finals, even though Gary Payton claimed to be slowing MJ down.
I didn't knew Schrempf was the first european All Star! I was under the impression that title would belong to Kiki VanDeWeghe who while being american citizen was born in West Germany. VanDeWeghe was a back to back All Star in '83 and '84.
That does not take anything away from Schrempf though! He definitely was an important pioneer for european players and I want to think he had atleast something to do with how Dirk Nowitzki's career panned out. I remember Schrempf vividly from his Sonics days.
Kiki VanDeWeghe was born in Wiesbaden but he was an amercian citizen. His father was amercan also his mother....
I’m still wondering why Pipp punched him in the face during a practice… we’re talking about PRACTICE…! lOl
96' was the best record in Sonic's Franchise history.
Dale Ellis
Dale was a deadly shooter
When you do dirk it will be legendary
Fudgin heck those Sonics teams were fun to watch.
Please do one on nick van exel
It's good to have Rice, Curry with Schrempf
Shrempfffff 🏀
Ironic that he was Dirk before Dirk since he began his career with the Mavericks, they had both him and Dale Ellis blossom elsewhere after being dealt
Tom chambers, Dale Ellis, Terry Porter and Mike Dunleavy Jr can we get them soon?
Video on Derrick McKey?
Word this man was a problem
Sam Perkins should be next
I remember when the great Moses Malone said about Detlef: "That white boy...CAN PLAY!"
As soon as I saw the channel's name and synopsis I made it one of my only 4 subs
You gotta do my man Andrei "AK47" Kirilenko!
Do Mahmoud abdul rauf
Respectable player also called the poor man's Larry Bird .
Dirk daddy
💎💎💎
I wished lakers had held onto perk a little longer. Omg I hated blobley. Nightmare all over!!!!
Carmelo Anthony brought me here via George Karl lol
That was a bad joker right there
