Birth of a Baby | 1938 Educational Film

- Опубліковано 3 сер 2021
- This historic dramatized film features scenes of actual childbirth and was ruled too indecent for public viewing when made. Also includes a lengthy segment detailing the dangers of abortion. Promotes the concept of a dedicated maternity ward at a hospital, as home births were the norm at the time.
Birth scene begins about 52:00
Hard to believe that this baby is now 83yrs old
Or, which is quite possible, dead.

Probably my mom.
my grandfather death at 85 today
@@Vader4499He was born and died... Lol
My parents were born in the mid-late 1920's. My grandma was born in 1896. She lived a good life right up till she died at 103. She said she was tired and wanted to go be with grandpa and would I get her teeth for her so she could put them in. I went to the living room to get my older brother and soon he came out and told me she's gone. He said she took one last breath and let it out and she was peaceful. I miss her so much. She was my best friend. She never needed a caregiver. I helped her with things and so did my brother. Shopping and all kinds of chores. I'd say she and all of her family were very fortunate. I'm 71 and live in subsidized housing where out of 38 apts most are elderly here. Many have failing health and have caregivers that come to help them. The oldest is almost 90. I'm lucky to have a place but it faces the parking lot and north in direction. I get no sun through my windows. I suffer from depression and anxiety and have all my life though I didn't know until several years ago that there was conditions that could be treated. Imagine that, I'm longing to be out in the county instead of in town even though it's a very sma;; town. I always lived out in the county where you can see the stars because it's so dark. And I miss the calls of the owls and the ravens and even the coyotes. But this was the only thing available to me. And on the flip side I can walk to anywhere in town. The only place I drive to is the grocery store anymore. Life is pretty good. But if I could get a unit on any other side I could see Admiralty Inlet , Port Townsend Bay and 3 different islands and Mt Baker and Mt Rainier and a lot of sky. All I see is cars.
::::hugs:::: bless you
This is the year my grandmother was born! She just celebrated her 83rd birthday ❤️
May god give long life
Hoping your grandmother is still with us. Same year my mom was born. She's hanging tough.
"What do you want me to do doc?" We just witnessed the 1930s version of a doctor saying, "Stay off of her for a few months dude!"
My mom was born in 1935, and my dad in 1933. Just to think that a year after this video was made, WW2 would break out.
YOU MUST BE PROUD AS HECK,Your parents are orignals
Thanks for the upload. This was fantastic. I wish things could be like this in the real world. So calm, easy, loving, no embarrassment, people actually talking to one another, respectful, etc...Sad that they're probably all have died. I hope they all had good lives.
Maybe the baby is still alive today 🙂
What is sad about death...
This is how I was raised.
My grandmother was born in 1930 and she would love to see this
it was said originally, that the negatives of the film were destroyed in the FOX Film Vault fire of 1937
I ran into the building just in time and saved them from the fire.

Dang. Health class in middle school didn't teach us much at all. Seriously. But this was seriously impressive for the 30's. I'm impressed.
My friends mother once told me it cost $150 to have a baby in 1968. When I had my first in 1999 it cost $20k. I hate to even think what it costs now 24 years later.
This is classic. The Doctor actually talks to her about a maternity bra. I would pay to have one of those corsets for my back. He skipped the part of the blastocyst. My mom was born in 1938. My grandmother was 15. She was in a big ward with other women from the neighborhood. Gram said the Doctor told the women they should all be as brave as this young girl. Funny she doesn't remember having my mom. Said it was a piece of cake. My mom had me in the 60's They gave you gas then through a mask. She said she grabbed the mask, and just kept sucking it in, and wouldn't give it back. I was told a period is a curse. Childbirth is dangerous business. Ironically I had endometriosis and by the time I saw a gynecologist they removed my ovary at 17. I suffered for years, and had six operations by the time I had my daughter at age 29 after years of fertility treatments. Loved being pregnant. Giving birth was nowhere as painful as endometriosis. My daughter was blessed to have three generations of women to give her different perspectives. She's childfree by choice. However she has friends who are doula's , and one a midwife. It's amazing how just in several decades things change, but have gone full circle to when my greatgram had her children at home with the neighborhood "midwife" in attendance. All this Doctor wanted was a hospital. 😆
oomagaa
where you life
This is an excellent film!! A perfect one to show young people. It's matter of fact, and they use the correct terminology. Well done🎉!!!!!
As I read this film was banned at that time, because of real scene of baby birth , if they watch home birth today what they will they react . We in Arabic countries home birth is banned more than 30 years.
Why do all of the people in old movies like this have those accents? Where does it come from?
Chicago
it's called the mid-atlantic accent :)
Patrician accent
Pretty progressive for 1938. I was in elementary school in the 70s and they had stupid films that told us zero. Health class in 8th grade was also useless..
I was educated in the 80s in Scottish highlands and there was no sex education whatsoever!
It's nostalgic
And the doctor sent them the bill: $14
fun fact: in europe, for example in germany, you get no bill at all.
They all have died now😭
Nope I'm alive
I really like history archives
I feel like nurses should go back to wearing white with a hat, at the risk of sounding sexist, t just looked cooler,
with the male nurses wearing something stylish to
2 weeks help after the baby. Give that man a ⭐️
That is the year my parental units were born!

I am surprised that they did not show the passing of the placenta too. Also, they sure gave her some good stuff to make her all loopy. I was just given an epidural for both of my chuldren when I went into labor.
I was also surprised that the doctor or nurse did not papitate her stomach either to ensure full expulsion of the placenta unless they did not show that part in the film. I know that the nurses would come in and palpitate my stomach a few times even after the placenta was gone but I can't remember the reason for it.
Back then sometimes they’d just give them a shot in the belly to pass the placenta immediately after giving birth.
@@marissateresa_I think that's still standard, that's what I had last year
Precious.
Don't mean to be ignorant, but without mri, how did they know how things happened inside, other than surmising ?
Seems doctors back then knew , just by looking at a person what was wrong with them, without modern equipment, no ?
When he was feeling her abdomen he was using something called Leopolds Maneuvers. It is done by feeling for the back of the baby, head, bottom and limbs in relation to where they are in the abdomen. Many midwives who do home births still use this technique just much more often throughout pregnancy since they don’t usually have access to ultrasounds at every appointment.
I'M ALWAYS LOVE MY ALL GRANNY'S & GRANDPAA'S, GOD BLESSED
They didn’t have ultrasound back then so the gender of your baby was a surprise.
If only hospitals were this cozy, well tended, calm, and women were allowed to stay in bed for days healing in the hospital (like back then) before going home.
You are sadly mistaken if you think healthcare was better in the 30’s… especially for laboring women. Trust you’re better off in modern times. So much less was known back then which resulted in a lot more suffering for women and babies. And it’s actually to get up and move around after birth within reason. Laying on your back for days is unnatural… as well as giving birth on your back.
It's like that outside of the US
My mom who was born in 1938 would agree with this. She can't believe some women go home in 24 hours and then have no help at home. Then again she's still telling me how she's never been able to urinate right since her episiotomy. Mrs. Burgess is getting alot of help there.
Wow that doctor had a large office.
I'm 20 years old and I can't imagine my mother or anyone else's mother talking this information to me. My grandmother was actually way more informative but still, no one told me about such things😄
Такой красивый ребенок родился!
I cant believe i watches this whole movie
It lacked Skin-to-skin contact, verte important
Yet they all turned out mostly okay ! Fancy that !
Okay he's wearing gloves, that's good, but is the women an actress she's wearing makeup with her hair done ?
It was actually expected of women to bring along makeup and hair products. Some of these instructional videos say, "and pack things to make yourself pretty"
I love how they skipped over the delivery of the placenta entirely…
They sure did.
I can't believe that women truly believed that all women needed to be cautious with their activities during their menstrual cycle.
I wouldn't go swimming, but I would dance.
That baby is 85 years now!!
What about the rest of the adults? It's weird how we'll go get old one day and the next generationwill take over afterwards.
If the baby is still living.
A very good chance nobody in this film is around anymore. But how about that Mom....that had to be one of the fastest, calmest and quietest births ever!! She was pushing a baby out without even moaning at all!?!? How was that even possible???
Wonder what was in the hypodermic syringe at the end???
Pretty progressive in 1938
Oh wow nice back than 💕
why isn't the baby crying right after being born
idk my baby didnt cry right when he was born the doctor rubbed him a lot i think on his back or chest and then he started crying
He did say he was going to give her something for the pain when she was further into her labor… my have repressed baby breathing. Frances
Oh my, when the doctor said 'ideal painkillers 'was that 1930's speak for heroin ? ,yikes
All of them are died and the baby himself his grand children over forty years old
I see so many mistakes, very sad.
You do realize when this was made? Yes, things are done differently now but this was made in 1938. No need to be sad or disparaging.
@@AB-un4io Exactly. Everybody made it out just fine it seems. My mom was born in 1938. Still here!
@kimberlydeeney5652 my mom was born in 1935 on the kitchen table...no hospital for her back then...she was the oldest of 4...
They don't want us to know the real history
Ada bawok nyA
They had gowns in the 30's, why is she wearing a sheet?
No sound of her having labour pains nothing about post natal depression this film leads women to believe its all rosy in the garden but we all know that's not the case.
Women who don’t fear labor pains often don’t make a lot of noise. Screaming is from fear. Controlled pain is sometimes silent or in the expression of moaning.
Ten days in bed????
Black baby?
Um yes
Why are you so racist
@King Raplh Mativo he's not being racist

👀 that anti abortion rhetoric is uh, not good. 😂
It was the 1930s....
It was anti illegal abortion.
These days, abortion is safer than childbirth.
How many have you killed?
