  • Hello and Welcome, Welcome to Split the Veil! Listen to Jordan of Exalted March, and Caitie of Ghildirthalen explore the world of podcasting and Bioware games. In this episode: Caitie and Jordan discuss Dragon Age: Dreadwolf hitting a major development milestone - making it to alpha stage. Now that the devs have gotten a start-to-finish draft of the game in place, we discuss what's next for Dreadwolf, and how long its main quest might be. We also talk about the end-of-life for mobile game Heroes of Dragon Age. Also: Dragon Age: Absolution, N7 Day, and (very briefly) what it's like to be a musician on the Titanic.

For those of you wondering, they recorded this episode earlier, and by pure bad luck they released this podcast saying "There's been absolutely nothing about Dragon Age Absolution" the exact same day a trailer dropped lol

Mark Darrah’s video was very informative, if anyone is curious what “in alpha” actual means in game dev speak I highly recommend it.

Dreadwolf will be released November 18, 2024, ten years to the day Inquisition came out.

I love how last time - codex episode, alpha news breaks on the brink of podcast, this time "there's literally nothing to talk about" - whole ass trailer with FAIRBANKS drops, confirming dec 9 release for tv show as well :D

I remember when the Russian sanctions were starting to ramp up and some question about whether or not there would be a Russian localization for DA:D, and just picturing it being withheld and Putin being blindsided by a bunch of pissed-off Russian elf-f'ers storming the Kremlin, and the international journalists scrambling to make sense of the enraged mob: "Hi Lawrence, I'm here in a vestibule just outside of red square and you can really feel the passion and anger of these young insurgents who have rocked the Putin regime. Their demands are cryptic and we're still trying to get a translation for some of the words they are shouting, I thought I was fluent in Russian but I admit I don't know what the English word for _Ven-ann_ would be. It's possible that _Ka-Dann_ is the name of the new opposition leader. I will say this: the regime has fled in terror and there is just carnage. Absolute carnage. Broken glass, papes everywhere, the smell of smoke hangs thick. The tipping point has finally arrived, and the world holds its breath for what is next."

I discovered DAI during the pandemic, it became special to me! Pulled me through those crazy "unprecedented" times. And now that the pandemic is somewhat (hopefully) over, and I have to wait for DA4- I can't imagine what it was like for hard core fans to wait 8+ years for DA4, because it feels so long for me but I only discovered Dragon Age 2 years ago lol. Thanks for making your podcasts, they're often highlights of my week while I study & they help keep me looking forward to DA4 coming out! You both are so fun to listen to, I guess I just wanted to say thanks for doing what you do!

It takes a child's mind to defeat child safety locks.
And as for the length of games: I have three playthroughs of Inquisition. That's 1048 hours. That's a good length for a narrative game.

I'll admit I'm one of those lucky people. I didn't discover dragon age until the pandemic. Also a quick edit on Absolution, a new trailer dropped for it that confirms the December 9th release date. Also shows Cassandra!

Discussion on length of narrative was very cool! One of my friends recently asked me which baldur's gate game is best, and I am realizing that part of my reason for saying BG1 is because the story is tighter and none of the side missions derail you too hard. If you want to do some side shenanigans before going to the next story item, it's one or two small areas then you're free.

Love your podcast. Found it during pandemic for the first time.
On dragon age's future: I feel like currently there is a hype building up. Alpha stage, new comic as prequel to dreadwolf, the TV show release just after game awards... so what are the chances for a trailer drop or release date announcement at the game awards? Tie it all together?

I'm wrapping up my first Elden Ring playthrough, and loved it. Still looking forward to Dreadwolf, as well as Starfield and Baldur's Gate 3. Give me owl bears and gelatinous cubes!

On the topic of “what’s too long” this depends so much on the game and the individual person playing, which i think is why we can’t come to the conclusion of what too long is. If that makes sense
Personally Persona 5 Royal is an 80 hour game minimum… at this time i have about 500 hours in the game (granted it is New game plus and extra side content) but i cannot get enough of that game, i even just boot up the game and listen to the soundtracks sometimes.

Honestly, we've had super big epic DA games. Origins and Inquisition. DA2 was pretty nice. If DAD is shorter, I'd be ok with that. A nice, 30-40 hour, focused great narrative. Sounds pretty good to me.

At the time, I thought that Heroes of Dragon Age was a paid-to-win kind of game. Like "Here, play this game, and you lose all your money for this one character."

    • @theelderworm9134
      @theelderworm9134 2 роки тому

As someone who played it a ton, I agree. I never paid, and was always proud that my team got to compete with the high level players, but it took actual years to get top tier. I was tempted to spend money on it, but I was 14 at the time, and couldn't pay. By time I was 19, I had a team that got me on the leaderboards, for a total of 11 seconds before I got challenged and defeated by like, 1000 people.

I like spiders and I gave Steelrising a try. But it was one of those games that make me feel like I’d rather just play the actual Souls franchise.

The example of "game being repetitive being the point" would be rogue-likes! Darkest Dungeon for example can be breezed through if you know what you're doing in less that 10 hours, but maximizing your team, allies and artifacts makes the game and playing the DLCs allows the game to have repetitive combat, and mechanics but still be rewarding. A bad example would be live service games and rankings in those games. When can you tell you beat the game? You got the highest rank you can get? Have all the heroes in such game? All collectibles? Its an endless pool of money companies can exploit which is why they pay wall/limit people's access to those things.

I always wonder what the scores of Playstation games would be if they were multiplatform. I feel like they get an instant buff based on Playstation bias. Like God of War could be the best game ever idk because every Playstation game that I thought was kind of average got similar review scores.

The whole debate about length of development just seems like such bs to me. If they stopped spending so much time and energy into cookie cutter fetch, collect and grind quests, they would still be releasing games every couple years. Its the comstant chase for "long term engagement" and monetisation through repetitive, addictive game mechanics that has caused this.
