    Derek, thank you so very much for answering the question about what made you want to become a nutritionist. It was so important to hear your words for me now. I lost my dad from cancer when i was 24, it was too early. And i started thinking the same things about food like you said. Also i quit kinda respected office job which i had according to my education (I mean come on, i was taught that i have to work if i spent time and money for the education) few years ago and I've done so many things since then and i still didn't find what i want to do exactly. Sometimes i wanna give up and just be like "normal people" and go back to office job, but I know it's not for me and I'll be seriously unhappy, so i continue to look for my way and your words were right on time. So thank you again for everything you do and for your amazingly beautiful montage.

      You can use a bad job to build character. Few have a job they love, but do the best you can, always. Don't define yourself by what you do, rather, how well you do it. Don't do it for anyone else, do it for yourself. Trust me, people will notice, even if no one shows you gratitude, doors will open for you. When they do, you have to ready to recognize them, so never miss an opportunity to make a friend, even its just a casual acquaintance. I know, sounds like some Tony Robbins non sense, just consider it, and good luck to you.

    I started when I was 13 as well, back in 2006. Back then, many people told me I'd get sick, not grow up properly and end up in a hospital. My parents didn't support me and were constantly challenging my beliefs, saying I thought I knew more than doctors and even God.
    Luckily I stood up through it all with the help of Mother Internet, got thinner, grew up, had more energy than all my friends (specially when they started drinking alcohol and smoking) and now that veganism is everywhere here in Brasil I'm considered some kind of young sage by a lot of people.
    The advice I can give to people receiving hate out there is: to many people your choice and beliefs will represent a challenge and remind them of what they hate about themselves. Don't let it harm you. Find the others, we are out there going through the same.

    Loved your answer to "What made you want to become a nutritionist?", and the idea of doing things that are in alignment to your values and goals. People often consider "quitting" to be a bad thing - but oftentimes, it can be the best thing we can do, especially if we're quitting something that isn't fulfilling us.

    Thanks for the “alignment” talk 5:10. I’m dealing with some really heavy life changes and depression/anxiety.
    I’m trying VERY hard to stay true to my inner morals and follow that path, which is really new experience for me.
    I’m out of work right now and don’t want to continue my old career. And the more I meditate and journal about honesty and my morals, the more it’s pointing me to do something in public service, and specifically helping the homeless population in my area.
    Anyway, thanks again for the motivation!

    Those falls are amazing! Also thanks a lot for you response about how you became a nutritionist; I graduated a year ago and have been working retail and now finally got a job that is a move in the right direction but not something that I want to do forever. It's really nice to hear, and it might be obvious, that your journey through life as long as you stay driven to pursue something you want to do you can eventually find your self near that or may be in something that you never knew you wanted to do. Thanks again for the awesome video; keep up the great work!

    Derek, I love everything that you and please keep spreading positive information. Now let's have fun with some questions!
    Q1: Let's say you rescued a chicken, raised it like any other pet and continue to do so even after the hen stopped producing eggs. Would you still consider yourself a vegan if you ate the eggs?
    Q2: Cats are strictly carnivores and they currently cannot thrive on a plant-based diet. How do you feel knowing that an animal is killed in order to produce cat food? If all humans were vegan, would it be ethical to still raise animals for slaughter for our meat-eating pets?

    When you buy the bamboo.drill a hole in each section and squeeze cement lime or cement liquid or sauce form let it dry and it will stay much longer

    • @Simnettnutrition
      @Simnettnutrition  6 років тому

      Someone else recommended this. Is this a proven practice?

  • @papparocket
    @papparocket 6 років тому

    If you inject self expanding foam inside the bamboo that will increase the strength of the bamboo several fold. The foam keeps the walls of the bamboo from buckling. One way to do this is to drill a hole the size of the straw on the spray foam can into one end of each cell in the bamboo. Do all the holes in a line. Then with the pole vertical and the hole at the top spray foam in. Probably hard to know exactly when you have sprayed in enough liquid, but I don't think overfilling will be a problem. Some foam should be forced back out of the hole. After the foam has set, just use a sharp blade to cut the foam off flush. Then mount the pole so that all the holes you drilled so that they are on the top since top of the pole is in compression and the bottom is in tension. Holes don't reduce the strength as much when they are on the compression side than if they were on the bottom. Sorry I am a mechanical engineer and this triggered my problem solving/engineering side.

    • @Simnettnutrition
      @Simnettnutrition  6 років тому

      Don't be sorry. I appreciate the help. Hmmm, really? Increasing the strength by putting holes in the top? Would water eventually seep in or would the foam seal that out? And thanks for the explanation on what side to put up or down. I love stuff like that. Makes sense in my head. :D

    • @papparocket
      @papparocket 6 років тому

      The foam should seal it out. The way it makes it stronger is that the foam keeps the bamboo sides from buckling. The effect is the same as a soda can. Before it is opened with high pressure inside you can easily stand on the can without it crumpling because the pressure and the liquid inside keep the thin metal walls straight so that your weight passes straight down to the ground. Now if you open and drink the soda and try to stand on the empty can there is nothing keeping the thin walls straight and so they easily buckle and the can gets flattened. So in the same way the foam should help keep the walls of the bamboo rod straight so the bending forces from you hanging on it either press straight through the top (as compression) and the bottom (as tension).
      As for why have the holes in a line on the top, I think I want to revise my recommendation that the holes align on top to instead recommend that the holes align so that they are on the side (or sides since you could alternate them from one side to the other. The top and the bottom are the parts of the rod that carry the most force (compression on the top and tension on the bottom). The sides by comparison carry little force and so the weakening due to the holes shouldn't have as much an effect. Also, while the foam should seal out any water, having the holes on the sides will keep also help keep the water out.

      You didn't ask for my opinion, but I'll say it anyway =]. I'm against the gluten hunt that's been going on lately. I've been eating home-made sourdough bread for a while now and it is WONDERFUL. For me the problem is the way bread is made nowadays, not with its 3 ingredients, but with 30+; and not with natural fermentation but with processed stuff that doesn't break things down enough.

    • @alamoestepario9096
      @alamoestepario9096 6 років тому

      Well yes, I read about that too. But on the other hand I found some doctors finding that gluten is really bad. Since I developed a bowel disorder, I have to moderate the intake of gluten or avoid it suting some periods. I just want to hear another opinion about it.

I get this question a lot as a vegan and I can't see myself ever eating meat or something grown in a lab, although if people are going to eat meat I personally would prefer they ate lab grown meat so there isn't any animal suffering and less environmental impact. In 2007 vegan athlete Brendan Brazier suggested in his book 'The Thrive Diet' to take 80% hemp oil, 10% flaxseed oil and 10% pumpkin seed oil for salad dressings for an optimal balance of essential fatty acids. Great content Derek. Question : do you do barbecues? If yes then what foods do you use for it? Season is coming and all I can smell is meat from grill. What to do on a barbecue where everyone eats meat and not look like a weirdo? It's my first time as a vegan, gonna be tough...

    This is awesome simnett!🖒 I have actually recently been thinking about also becoming a nutritionist as I would love to learn more about food and our body and to actually help people. And maybe one day I can be like you also helping people on youtube and making the world a better place.😊

    Question for everyone: when you first went vegan did you find anything difficult or get anything wrong? What advise would have helped you when starting out?
    For me it was not cooking enough (I was in the final year of my law degree so pretty lazy at cooking) so I relied a lot on processed foods or rubbish protein sources and it did feel like I was compromising on taste to go vegan.

    I was concerned about these microwave rumors too, ever since Iam on the road traveling a lot again right now i find myself using it a lot...and i don't mind at all.
    I love to "really" cook when Iam in my own kitchen, while traveling...right now its just comfortable tho. And I still keep on eating what i want (healthy, vegan meals) so...works fine for me :-)
    And yea...about the gentle way, kinda makes sense as well. I sort of stream my veggies/foods in there (putting a plate on top) and for tofu - tempeh or such i just leave the lid of and its getting crisp.
    cheers & thanks for the video

    Derek, I am 2yrs a vegan but havent noticed significant body fat loss. Currently 30yr 5ft6in and 167lbs. I workout 5to6 days a week (45mins at least) and eat mostly whole foods. I can't break past this weight. Don't want to be labeled as the "Fat Vegan". Any suggestion or insight would be much appreciated. Want to be a positive light for vegan lifestyle. Thanks, great vids as always and can definitely relate to why you went plant based.

    Great video, Derek! You've visited the UK and I know you love California, but have you ever thought of visiting some other places around the world like Africa, Asia or South America? We have some great calisthenics gyms here in Cape Town and veganism is growing strong. I'm sure lots of people would love to show you around, myself included.

    Today’s my birthdayEnjoying your videos. I’ve always been interested in nutrition. Hate animals suffering Today is my first day I’ve never going back to eating animal anything. I have it mostly raw veggies and fruit before and felt amazing but I need to learn how to cook and prepare some satisfying vegan dishes. That is going to be key and help me to lose a ton of weight that I packed on just eating what other people were eating. To the tune of 170 pounds. I would say on 320 pounds I have a good amount of muscle always being active and continuing to try to work out. I can probably say my goal weight would be 150 pounds at 5 foot seven female. I will send up till age 23 . I’m excited To make the change and it helps knowing there’s a large community out there that have so much in common with the vegan lifestyle. Health and fitness enjoying life. Saving the animals and our earth.. I worked as a hospice Nurse for a couple years and I know all the suffering that I saw the most part was preventable. Thank you for sharing and being there. I I think maybe I should take some before pictures because I’m planning an amazing transformation.👍🏻🌸

    Have you tried reinforcing a bamboo pull-up bar with a rod or pipe inside it? Finding a good fit might be more trouble than it's worth, but it could buy you an extra season or two.

    About the "not eating the animal even though it's dead" part. If I went with that line of thought, then i shouldn't mind eating it if it's already served by another person to you (which is different from buying it yourself from the store). This is why, if I were to go vegan, it would be because it would feel more natural to eat what grows straight from the ground. So, I prefer a vegan diet, and I enjoy it more, and it feels natural, it's colorful, exciting to me, and I wouldn't hurt an animal, but I will eat (or taste) what someone has prepared by love and is excited to serve after a lot of thought, and it does not affect the "store demand". To me personally, I would eat meat as a blessing if this is what was available, but I would not want to mindlessly and impulsively eat it as a hunter who would hunt for more than meat and as a game.

    Hey Derek, AMM are pretty much my favourite thing on youtube. Keep up the good work!
    Do you have any tips on craving sugar/sweet stuff. I've been trying to lean out a bit, so I cut out the sugary stuff from my diet and since then I've been craving even more sweets. Distracting myself or eating fruit doesn't really substitute the chocolate craving...

    Your AMMs are the best! I missed the "Bink. Binkbink. Bonk. Bonk." though :) WRT nutrition confusion -- I was obsessed, constantly looking things up, but of course the best thing is to experiment on oneself which is what I'm doing now. The things is it takes time, patience, & prolonged focus to learn from the experimentation process! I've found it easier since I've gotten rid of Facebook and am taking an indefinite break from instagram -- rewiring my brain for focus rather than distraction! I have a 7 month old baby, that's distracting enough... haha. Anyway, as always, thanks for the great content ♡
