I guess I'm an OG. The O/D vids are perfect. Real world session situations, focus on what the song needs, real world theory and number system, and not too gear focused except how the sound serves the song. Your channel will be huge.
Yeah I’ve missed these. Love all the other content but for me personally this is what I’m here for. Justin does such a great job and his no-nonsense, easy manner is such a tonic. Super stuff.🙏
OG here - and your original stuff showing why and what you would add as a part is what brought me here - I think all OGs are the same - we are fascinated by 'parts' and 'fills' and the thought process behind their creation - I always think of Grady Martin parts on El Paso and what on earth or heaven caused him to think like that.....all that being said your new direction is great as well - keep going...
Thanks to UA-cam suggestions I found your channel. You’re an incredibly gifted player with tons of tone and chops. Just musical. From advice to playing to philosophy… musical. Had to subscribe. Loving your videos and your personality. Thanks for sharing your talent with the world. Cheers from Texas.
This OG is very happy the return of this style video. I realize it may not grow the channel, but it definitely is what made you different from others. Thank you
You're playing my favorite kinda sounds on this track. Without hearing the lyric, I don't know whether to feel sad, happy, introspective... Beautiful wash of emotions. Thanks for sharing!
Speaking as a bass player who did a lot of session work, if you want to work simplicity is the key. Honestly no producer or session leader will be impressed with your 16th note pentatonic runs and it’s more likely to get you fired and off the contractor’s list forever. UA-cam is full of these guys who wonder why their phones aren’t ringing for top session work. Do that stuff with your own band or in your bedroom if you want. But the most iconic bass lines are brilliant in their simplicity and that to me is where the true art of the instrument lies - not in trying to imitate a guitar player. I always use Abe Laboriel as the quintessential example of a player with immense chops who puts that all away when he’s doing commercial recording for others. Yet he does it in a way that is memorable. Nate East is in that class as well. That’s why they are household names amongst bassists and that’s true bass genius!
I'm a full time guitar player in the DFW Texas area and learning the parts that guys like you play in the sessions are tremendous lessons on building songs. One of the toughest things to do live is figuring out which parts have to be played and are key to the song when multiple parts are played. Sometimes I take those other guitar elements and use them underneath instruments that are covering fills or in gaps that I find. Some of the hardest things to do is cover instruments like the fiddle and you don't have one in the band. I tend to try and rhythmically replicate something similar but "guitarize" it! Thanks for taking us behind the scenes Justin! You're a valuable asset to the guitar community!
Has it really been 3 years?! While I very much enjoy the new content, it was/is the O/D episodes that first caught my attention, and keep me anxiously awaiting for the next installment...Really enjoy watching your channel grow my friend!
Thanks for this one. Since 2021 I've been soaking up your influence on my playing. And people are noticing favorably. :) From 100 subscribers then, to 14.7K and counting . . . Cheers JO from TC
I studied all the parts… wow so much here! And I love the ‘keep it simple’ approach Can’t wait to visit Nashville someday These overdubs are gold! Please keep them coming when u can
Great stuff. Once again you're adding so much and I can see why people want you to play on their tunes. The cherry on top for me was your ending bit. Not being familiar with some of your voicings, I like to play along with simple piano chords to keep track of the chords you're playing over. Really helpful for me... maybe some of your peeps should give that a try (piano or guitar).
Justin, this was fun to sit back and chill on a sunday afternoon and listen in on your play thru. all your guitars sound great, but that strat is sublime, loved it
Just wanna say that your playing is very inspiring. The tone is incredible, so soulful IMHO. Please keep sharing this tasteful and insightful stuff you do.
I really notice the discipline. I tend to try to play different things at various parts of the song - mostly to make it more interesting for me to play. But just because you can, doesn't mean you should. I also appreciate the wide interval chords. Good stuff!
I'm a very recent subscriber, and I love this kind of content. I enjoy writing and recording my own songs, and I learn so much from videos like this. We don't have to play a lot to add a lot to a song. Sounds like a Goo Goo Dolls song.
Great video. I learn so much about being a better guitar player with other pickers. Most players / jammers take up too much sonic space. Keep it simple is usually the best idea.
Well, that was just an honest days work dry ride dirt road no dust racing the sunset home. Good stuff, man. Telecaster, country insurance 😆 nice touch!
Thanks for making this video Justin so helpful to improving my guitar melody understanding and also just so nice listening to your Melodic playing and beautiful tone!
You deserve so many more subscribers... Your channel is so awesome, so relaxing, so informative, and just a joy to watch and listen to. It calms me down. Don't stop.
Been here since you had less than 1k subscribers. I know you gotta play the UA-cam game and you should, but these videos are gold! Thanks for your time, brother 😎
Super tasty playing as always Justin. Your sound is so good. Articlate, warm, and full. I realize 99% is in your hands. That said, I've been wanting to ask about your Chandler TG2 and the importance of this device and/or preamps in general for home recording. Wondering if you could talk about this in one of your videos. Still on the curve with home recording. I've learned a lot from you. The TG2 is out of my price range so I'm also wondering about your thoughts re: lower cost basic preamps and/or other considerations. Thank you so much!
It was the first preamp I ever bought. I have thought a lot about switching it up lately. Maybe get a lunchbox and some 500 series pres. I do dig the TG2 though. Haven’t felt the need. More of a curiosity thing at this point.
@@JustinOstrander Thank you very much for the reply Justin. If you're ever so inclined, I love to hear your thoughts on the sonic enhancements, qualities etc. that you look for in a preamp. Love seeing all the new subs!
You definitely made that piano part pop in just the right way. It doesn’t stick out at all as being like NBC 😂 Was that all neck pickup? Sounded absolutely lovely. Especially love the part right at the end of the chorus where it goes up on the neck and back down.
I heard a bit of organ popping around in there. It's funny how you feel about the piano notes...leading to your framing it and making almost fresh in the mix, like a marker.
Yes, when the band I was playing for did some recording I always asked for a scratch vocal track as what the vocalist did dictated to a great extent what I would do for the song.
I really love the sound of your 335...or should I say the sound of it in your hands! I'm primarily a tele guy but I always get moved by the 335 tracks. I thought these parts were really gorgeous.
Dude!!! Your ear for layering parts is phenomenal. I'm sure you've said it before... but what pickups are in ye' old biscuit??? They're super even and smooth.
Hi Justin, on your guiter parts are more important. By the way, im glad i subscribed. Can you answer this for me. I have a reissue vox and strat. What can i use to get some country sounds.
Thanks for the sub! A Vox is nice and chimey for country. I play country on a strat quite a lot. Search for that with my name. I did a video on it a while back. Lots of tips.
Hey Justin. Great playing (and writing!) as always. Quick question: you're always putting delay and reverb bevor the amp, right? But your amp has a fair amount of dirt there. When ever i do that no matter how subtle i try to put my settings it always sounds really muddy. But with you it almost sounds like it's post it's so clear. Any tips on how you dial your delays and reverbs before a semi dirty amp would be much appreciated.
Justin - have any of the artists that you work with in this manner ever commented on the video made for their song? Curious as to their thoughts, thanks!
Do you play with the round edge of your guitar pick?? Sort of like how Guthrie Trapp plays??? I have been working on it for a smoother tone, but curious how that sounds in Nashville studios?

Great balance between simple and Sophistication
“I don’t want to be the guy who plays something every time the vocalist takes a breath.” 😂. Amen to that!
I GOTTA SONG HERE! I GOTTA SONG HERE! I GOTTA SONG HERE! Man, I've missed that.
Man, I love your playing...could listen to this all day - this is just soo tasteful. Very inspiring.
So musical, the choices you make

Great video Justin! The vocal melody in the session pretty much dictates everything when it comes to guitars or anything within the vocal range.

That 335 is to die for! I'm loving the sweet tone you got for this. How did you build that? Is it a Super Reverb or a Princeton or..?
I discuss the rig at the top of the video. Staying on my Analog Outfitters Sarge the whole time here. No OD pedals or boosts with the 335.
Are you monitoring yourself through Pro Tools or thorough the UA mixer?
UA
Justin what is your favorite DAW and plugins? vid topic maybe?
Pro Tools is the standard in this town. I use plug-ins very rarely. I like the SoundToys suite: little plate, echoboy, etc
@@JustinOstrander TYVM that is the one I will get.

I’m constantly going back and forth between the point and the shoulder.
Hey Justin, when you use the Ox Box, do you always record your track in stereo?
Never. Always mono. And I turn off the OX effects and room mics. That most closely approximates how I mic a cab.
