Hey Sir, you should check before saying things : on How Am I Supposed To Live Without You, the mega hit by Michael Bolton, it's not Dann playing the solo but Michael Landau. Even if Dann is credited on the album where the song is, Soul Provider, he doesn't play on THIS SONG. Jus' sayin....🙄🙄
along with Lukather, Landau, and Paul Jackson Jr, Dann was one of the most prolific session players in the 1980s. Some of the tastiest , and a few well known, guitar solos in the 1980s, he did.
I was the director of technical operations for Starstruck Studios in Nashville when it first opened in '96... as Dann was winding down his studio career and beginning his production career (by producing an album for Megadeth! Just before then, Dann came into the studio to do some guitar parts for a Reba album and some of the things that he did with guitar were other-worldly... completely outside the realms of what most humans could or would be able to do. Yeah... he's SUCH an underrated, unsung guitar hero. One thing he told me about Giant was that they had just released their second album when Nirvana Nevermind was released. He said when he heard that record, he knew that Giant was finished. The best thing about Dann, besides his musicianship, is that he is truly a very great man as well!! By the way... Dann also talked about working with Mutt on Shania's album... Mutt asked Dann (as well as all of the musicians hired to play on the album) to bring EVERY guitar and amp he had. He said he pulled up to the studio in a U-Haul truck. Apparently they spent about three weeks or more just looking for sounds for the different song styles.
Finally! A video about Dann Huff! I like his work with his old band WhiteHeart, Amy Grant, Sandi Patti, and his amazing playing on David Benoit's Freedom At Midnight album.
When I went to GIT in 89 everybody knew who he was and we got real lucky that he came in and played for us with his new band the time called Giant he was a big deal before he moved to Nashville
Love this kind of video! Aside from the incredible studio guys we know or don't know, would also be great to see/hear more on guitarists we know but DIDN'T know they played on tracks that aren't "theirs" like Nuno playing on Janet Jackson's "Black Cat."
He's playing in Boz Scaggs 1988 The Other Roads album is Simply amazing. With Lukather, Porcaro, JR, David Williams, Paul Jackson Jr etc playing on it. Its sound so good!
Respectfully, Pretty sure the rhythm part in like a prayer was David Williams. That’s said, I loved working with Dan in those days. Monster player. Patrick Leonard
First heard him live in the early 80s when a band I was with was on a festival bill with the band, White Heart, that he and his drummer brother were in. Had a lot of Luke and Landau in his bag, but also had his own spin. The Huff family was well known in the Nashville scene because huis dad was a successful arranger. Having an arranger for a father taught him to listen with much bigger ears than just as a guitarist. After his LA years, he came back to Nashville and did extremely well as a producer.
For sure...I think he could bring the virtuosic playing of a Luke to solos, the ambience of Landau's cleans, and the funk of a Paul Jackson all in one.

Great video! I first heard of Dann Huff when he did that searing guitar solo on Michael W. Smith’s song “Place In This World” and lots of fun stuff on Steven Curtis Chapman’s album “Heaven In The Real World” in 1994. One of my favorite guitarists of all time!
Excellent video guys! Thanks for giving Dann the credit he deserves. Along with Steve Lukather and Michael Landau he definitely made the sound of the 80s and early 90s pop. Great tone, great playing, great feel. Simply great!
Didn't some of those guys (Huff, Landau, Luke) actually go to school together or have some pretty close geographic connections? Seems I read something about that years ago, but could be wrong. All monster players n hugely influential in guitar of 2+ decades of pop/rock/soul and in Huff's case country as well! Great vid guys, thx!
I always think of Dan Huff's work with Michael W. Smith. So many incredible parts and tunes. Stu G (who tours with Michael now) is an insane guitar player and he is always talking about all the incredible things Dan did on those tunes and how hard he has to work to pay homage to Dan's parts and do the songs justice. I didn't know Dan played on "Glory of Love" that song always distracted me when I'd watch Karate Kid because it is such a fantastic song. Great video, Dan really deserves this recognition!

Dann Huff is a beast. When Whitesnake recorded Here I Go Again for the 1987 album, producer Keith Olsen wanted some 8th notes in the third verse. Sykes would not to it, he wanted his full rig back in. Olsen called Huff who nailed it in one take.
I am an experienced musician and know the work of others like m. thomson, m landau, lukather but for me, dann's musicality is simply the one that touches me the most and the one that I find most beautiful. He was so wronged
His solos on the Giant albums have everything ,melody, speed incredible technique great singer too!, the intro to 'I'm a believer' is the 80's eruption, He was Mutt Lange first choice for sessions. The best ! His solos
Jason thank you for recognizing Dan Huff. I remember Dan the most from the CCM side of music with bands like White Heart and then his studio work so many CCM albums like with Michael W. Smith. His high gain but mostly clean tones in guitar ballad leads still gives me chills when I hear them. He had the nack for making a guitar ballad scream without over using distortion to the point of too much fizz. Unbelievable talent in both guitar and then as a producer.

From 1.50 you are saying Dann Huff played the How Am I Supposed To Live. Though playing on some other tracks on Soul Provider, Dann Huff didn’t play this solo, Michael Landau did. Thanks 🙏
His work on the radio edit of “Here I Go Again” was interesting. The song was re-recorded for pop-rock radio and he definitely delivered on that one. Great guitar solo as well. Very different from Adrian Vandenberg’s.
Dan is a great player. Daryle Singletary Too Much Fun is a monster solo. I had to learn it, and he detunes the A to G, and E to D. Really elastic 90s Nashville sounds. Clint Black Nothing But the Taillights was a good one too 👍
also Dann Huff produced the late '90s albums of Megadeth, this could be a factor in Dave Mustaine's conversion, but I digress. But this is a testament to Dann Huff's amazing eclecticism, from David Benoit to Dave Mustaine (Megadeth)
Can someone elaborate a bit more on the Like a Prayer riff, what other settings on the amp, pedals or what they did with the EQ to get that tone? Been trying to make a funk sound like that for a while but just can’t seem to get it just right.

The man is a versatile and tasteful guitarist indeed.
The man is just phenomenal. I downloaded the Giant albums and we blown away.
Hi Mason would love to see a video on Danns Playing and tones on the 2 Giant albums in the late 80s/early90s.
Me too!
From 1.50 you are saying Dann Huff played the How Am I Supposed To Live. Though playing on some other tracks on Soul Provider, Dann Huff didn’t play this solo, Michael Landau did. Thanks 🙏
Watch the video again, this correction is made in the video
@@VertexEffectsInc thanks Mason, great job! 🙏
Few ever mention Dann and GIANT's excellent work on the soundtrack for the movie "The Program".
Great video. My shout out for an unsung guitarist is Doug Boyle on Robert Plant’s Now And Zen. What a genius.
Rock on!
His work on the radio edit of “Here I Go Again” was interesting. The song was re-recorded for pop-rock radio and he definitely delivered on that one. Great guitar solo as well. Very different from Adrian Vandenberg’s.
Yes indeed!
I didn't know about this edition. Thought Vanderberg's was the only version. Thanks for your comment!
Great job! You guys are wonderful musicians yourselves
The guitar solo on Michael Bolton's song is not Dann Huff's; It's Michael Landau's solo
Maybe you didn’t watch the video as this is noted
@@KristianLarsenGuitarhe didnt know it was Landau’s solo when filming
Giant was such an awesome band
The best!
Gotta love Dan Huff.. he's an amazing guitar player, singer and songwriter.. Giant is a proof of that!
Dann Huff very melodic player. Giant was awesome. Check out his playing on John Anderson’s and Blackhawk records from the 90s, great guitar work.
Will do!
Dan is a great player. Daryle Singletary Too Much Fun is a monster solo. I had to learn it, and he detunes the A to G, and E to D. Really elastic 90s Nashville sounds. Clint Black Nothing But the Taillights was a good one too 👍
Nice!!!
I See it Now by Tracy Lawrence is another great pseudo Nashville/LA solo 👍
@@Jeff-11_354 Yes!!!!
His work with Amy Grant was 🔥
Yes indeed!
That's Mr Rig Doctor Sir!!!! Thanks 👊🏽👊🏽👊🏽
You bet
Damn.. always thought Danger Zone was Steve Stevens. Dunce hat for me.
Steve did the Top Gun anthem
He could definitely get down and compete with the great shredders of that time. He is underrated.
Michael Landau played the solo on How am I supposed to live without you…
Where is that disputed in the video?
I believe it was Landau that played the How Am I Suppose to Live Without You.
See 1:50
Dann Huff also played on All I Want For Christmas is You, and half of Daydream by Mariah Carey!!
also Dann Huff produced the late '90s albums of Megadeth, this could be a factor in Dave Mustaine's conversion, but I digress. But this is a testament to Dann Huff's amazing eclecticism, from David Benoit to Dave Mustaine (Megadeth)
❤I concur
Can someone elaborate a bit more on the Like a Prayer riff, what other settings on the amp, pedals or what they did with the EQ to get that tone? Been trying to make a funk sound like that for a while but just can’t seem to get it just right.
I only saw the Mirage pedal. Is it the only thing that the guitar ran through straight into the amp?
Love these vids!
Glad you like them!
Saw Dan at Irvine Meadows in L.A. Shreddin!
Another Gem Mason!
Thanks for watching!
Great video. Thanks. Which pickups are you using in these demos?
Dimarzio Virtual Vintage in the neck and middle and a Duncan EVH in the bridge
Dann did play on the title track of Micheal Bolton s Soul provider album and another track on same album i cant think of but all rhythm parts !
