Dude, I would listen to an album of this vibe. Absolute car cruise tune. Good work Pat. And as for "guitar is a great hobby because you can get better at it" . . . spoken like someone who used to play golf. I feel it.
Thank you kindly! Still play golf. Keep thinking I’m going to wake up one day and be scratch, but unlike music, it is very easy to make myself worse at golf. Plateaued at best. Thanks again! Pat
There's a kind of intimacy in your video that seems to match your personality. Something real, authentic. It's cool the time you dedicate to these songs.
Thanks for checking it out Justin, really appreciate it and thanks for the feedback. Is the 'Sitka' on your t-shirt for Sitka, AK? Been there many times, great spot. Thanks again, Pat
Catchy and well performed and recorded tune. Absolutely loved your input. Expertise freely given with humility is a pretty special thing, Justin. I’m so enjoying this channel.
GR8 Episode!! Here's MY unsolicited 2 cents. That outro(?)begs for a nice short & tasty lead line. Something memorable...think; Heartbreakers Mike Campbell. I Love the guys voice(not 100% on the harmony. BUT, if I had the cans on I'm sure it would sound good, just like you said they did. This episode totally inspired me to go back to my own unfinished songs. Maybe one day you will review one of my babies?
Great composition! As a vocalist, the only thing would suggest is... have more confidence in your vocals! The singing is right on, but I couldn't understand a word. I have no idea what the song is about. I love the power and feel of the song, but put your vocals more forward. Great tune, and great comments... rock on!
Pat, nice job - your vocal reminds me of Sugar era Bob Mould - really cool. Justin thanks for another stellar set of comments and advice - reward yourself with a SG!
I liked Pat’s submission. I always learn a lot listening to the insights the pros such as yourself offer. The comments regarding the formulas and algorithms various media platforms use to determine play time, etc. is fascinating on one hand and frustrating on the other. Sometimes it seems like we are all being ruled by “big brother” and the machines. Maybe that’s why I like live recorded, more raw music that isn’t always perfect yet I know real humans composed and played it. Enough bloviating from me - keep the great content coming!
I love this format and your way of hosting it Justin. Just a thought regarding “own voice”. Get over it, accept it, and learn to love it. All is just fine and good :-) Great song Pat…
Justin, I am late to the party on discovering your channel but better late than never. Your insight is invaluable and on behalf of all us older lovers of music, thank you.
The song reminds me a lot of Badfinger. Yeah, short intros and short songs. Why? Max Martin. Waiting for the "Guitars I bought from Uncle Larry" episode! LOL!
This is a cool tune. The mix of elements work for me. And I'd bet that exactly what he doesn't like about his own vocal sound is the actually its selling point for others. Good work all around.
Well done! I love this series on the channel. One thing I noticed is that the motion is really choppy in the video. Probably because the shutter speed is too high on the camera. If the frame rate is 24p you want a 1/50th shutter. You would have to adjust the gain/iso or iris to compensate. Look up the exposure triangle if you are interested. Anyway, love your content and there has been a big bump in video quality recently.
I was listening while doing something else, and right when you pressed play on the track, an ad came on for something and Megadeth was playing - NOT what I expected, especially after the intro.
Great, constructive and humble advice Justin! What a great tune! I only have one suggestion: I would restrict (condence) the vocal harmonies on the verses to a few small phrases. I think the vocals are fantastic and by limiting the harmonies on the verses, the choruses would really shine....just my 2 cents worth. Again, what a great song!
Another excellent video Justin thank you. Pat if you are checking out the comments I want to tell you that I really like the song. It is very cool and something that makes me want to hear more from you. My reaction, not as a pro, but as a listener was similar to Justin's. I thought the break at the end of second chorus hurt the momentum. Also the outro, aside from the push that Justin mentioned, is a bit long. Displacing the snare an 8th on 2 is cool for four bars. I wanted to hear the drums drive 2 and 4 for the next 3 bars. Maybe a hit on 2 and a fill on the 4th bar of each 8 bar phrase. That's just my humble opinion. Hope this is not presumptuous on my part. I never comment on songs but I liked this enough to do so. Thanks for the tune!
@@dusty_dustbin_basementjamh4827 thanks Pat! I stopped playing drums after I made those and took up guitar. What an instrument! Still trying to figure it out.

What a cool song! Great stuff, Pat.... & very cool critique Justin! My inner mixing nerd noticed that the mix compression is "pumping" maybe just a tad too much. I love the vibe that the pumping effect gives the song, btw but maybe it could be tamed just a bit to the point where it is more subliminal than obvious. Top stuff!
I LOVE TO WATCH JUSTIN SOKE UP THE SONG, OF WHICH MOST ARE QUITE COOL TO LISTEN TO AND HAVE GREAT MOVEMENT AND HARMONY,,,, BUT I AM ABSOLUTELY IN ORE OF WHAT HE DOES WITH THE CHARTING OF THE SONG,, THAT WOULD BE GREAT TO BE ABLE TO BE PROFICIENT AT, UNREAL BEST CHANNEL ON THE TUBE,,,,,,,,
Great song! My two cents - thinking about making the song stick in your ears longer- would be to pull the lead vocal up louder in the mix, either by ducking or simply bumping it up. Your vocal quality is pleasant and different from the current style, which is what you want. Adding a stronger female vocal could add some intrigue too. I also feel it needs an instrumental hook to add just a bit more variety (ying-Yang of groove vs unexpectedness): perhaps taking the guitar solo and use part of that in the intro and between verse and chorus. Keep at it! Loving what you’ve done!
I must learn about this ducking thing. Big challenge for me to get the vocal to sit 'right' in the mix. Thanks for checking it out and the recommendation, Pat
Pat! Like the tune. A LOT. Instruments need some separation in the mix. Agree with another commenter who called out the NRBQ vibes. This is a keeper.. keep going man.
Yes, mixing is a challenge. I end up listening to the stuff I record so much as I go, very easy to trick myself into thinking it is 'ok' just because I get so used to how it sounds. Thanks for listening! Pat
You guys have so many guitars...do you ever get bogged down with making a choice? I like how early Jack White had one or two cheap guitars and had to make them work. I think those are the best sounds. It's the most creative process to me
I guess at the end of the day, they’re tools in a toolbox. When I need to deliver a specific sound (Tele pickin or thick power rhythms), the tool that does that best is the one I reach for.
I can only speak for me but I often cut sections in half and am almost always surprised at how often it works great. Verses and/or bridges can really often be cut down. If the melodic idea was strong enough to begin with, you might not have to repeat it, no matter how much you love the part itself. You have to be merciless with yourself, but it can help tighten up the tune. Obviously that doesn't always work, but I always keep it in mind and try it at some point, just to see.
@@JustinOstrander I just put two and two together. Have you ever worked with Big Al Anderson (from NRBQ)? He's in Nashville writing and picking I think.

Good song, just needs some trimming of the fat here and there. Bonus points for the cold intro. Outro sounds a little weird compared to the rest of the song IMHO.
Cool tune....but I think it could benefit from some arrangement, felt like it hit its peak and then flatlined. A few of the sections went on a bit too long for my taste IMHO. I would also prefer a more dynamic solo section to elevate the song. I like how you allow your subscribers to send in their songs for analysis.
