In my opinion, this was the best "casting" decision on the Hamilton mixtape. And this performance is somehow a LOT better than the album version. Chills and tears. Thanks, Kennedy Center.
Regina is so underrated. This talented woman is precious and deserves all the fame but in the same time I don't want her to be popular and mainstream..
They broke the mold when Regina was made. She is so far above popular and mainstream, she's on a completely different level, she is real. There's popular and then there is "my own private superstar" (i.e. the artist that has hundreds of millions of plays yet still speaks to each of us seemingly on an individual basis.) I'm sure it didn't hurt that her parents are exceptional individuals as well. I like to think that Regina considered the potential of fame and popularity from the beginning and addressed it in the song Us (among others.) If you haven't heard it a thousand times, it's worth another listen. So much meta... open.spotify.com/track/6zJms3MX11Qu1IKF44LoRW?si=YoJ2Ts_7TzmmzYthVCJSgw
i kind of want regina to write a musical! she's such a master of telling engrossing little stories in her songs - it'd be interesting to see her take on the challenge of a full theatrical piece.
So many things you can learn from Regina. Just her huge smile teaches us many life lessons: how her smile shows passion in what she does, reveals how thankful she is to the audience and orchestra, how she forgets troubles in the world through art. Regina, thank you.
Dear Theodosia, what to say to you? You have my eyes You have your mother’s name When you came into the world, you cried and it broke my heart I’m dedicating every day to you Domestic life was never quite my style When you smile, you knock me out, I fall apart And I thought I was so smart You will come of age with our young nation We’ll bleed and fight for you, we’ll make it right for you If we lay a strong enough foundation We’ll pass it on to you, we’ll give the world to you And you’ll blow us all away Someday, someday Yeah, you’ll blow us all away Someday, someday Oh Philip, when you smile I am undone My son Look at my son Pride is not the word I’m looking for There is so much more inside me now Oh Philip, you outshine the morning sun My son When you smile, I fall apart And I thought I was so smart My father wasn’t around (my father wasn’t around) I swear that I’ll be around for you I’ll do whatever it takes I’ll make a million mistakes I’ll make the world safe and sound for you Will come of age with our young nation We’ll bleed and fight for you, we’ll make it right for you If we lay a strong enough foundation We’ll pass it on to you, we’ll give the world to you And you’ll blow us all away Someday, someday Yeah, you’ll blow us all away Someday, someday
I wanna leave a poem here. It's said that Theodosia was lost at sea. This reminded me of a love poem. It's fitting that I remembered it because Annabelle Lee was "shut up in a sepulchre by the sea". Ben, I love your work and the passion you exhibit. Regina, you have a beautiful voice and have brought a new light to Dear Theodosia. Annabelle Lee by Edgar Allen Poe: It was many and many a year ago, In a kingdom by the sea, That a maiden there lived whom you may know By the name of Annabel Lee; And this maiden she lived with no other thought Than to love and be loved by me. I was a child and she was a child, In this kingdom by the sea, But we loved with a love that was more than love- I and my Annabel Lee- With a love that the wingèd seraphs of Heaven Coveted her and me. And this was the reason that, long ago, In this kingdom by the sea, A wind blew out of a cloud, chilling My beautiful Annabel Lee; So that her highborn kinsmen came And bore her away from me, To shut her up in a sepulchre In this kingdom by the sea. The angels, not half so happy in Heaven, Went envying her and me- Yes!-that was the reason (as all men know, In this kingdom by the sea) That the wind came out of the cloud by night, Chilling and killing my Annabel Lee. But our love it was stronger by far than the love Of those who were older than we- Of many far wiser than we- And neither the angels in Heaven above Nor the demons down under the sea Can ever dissever my soul from the soul Of the beautiful Annabel Lee; For the moon never beams, without bringing me dreams Of the beautiful Annabel Lee; And the stars never rise, but I feel the bright eyes Of the beautiful Annabel Lee; And so, all the night-tide, I lie down by the side Of my darling-my darling-my life and my bride, In her sepulchre there by the sea- In her tomb by the sounding sea.
This live performance that is so beautiful that it hurts. Regina's voice is pure and incredible. The orchestra musicians and Ben Folds are so attentive to her. My favorite moment is at 1:47 just before she comes in again.
My favorite moment is 0:28-0:32. The cellists try to look away to get ready for their entrance, but they can’t stop watching her because she’s just…magic. I came to this video tonight after seeing her recent post regarding the invasion of Ukraine. This performance is all the richer to think about her own experiences with conflict and upheaval as a child; the dueling hope and uncertainty comes through every moment of this piece. Humanity might be worth saving.
I've never seen "Hamilton," but this song, as sung by my most cherished singer and songwriter (Regi, of course~) certainly entices me in that direction!
@@kathleenjones5835 It’s been two years since I made the original comment, so I’ve listened to some of the other music and decided that it’s really not much my style. I still come back to this edition of Dear Theodosia on occasion, but the rest of it I care little for. Sorry 😅
This is how a great/connected singer should be-- really connected to the words, the meaning, the musicians around her. It shouldn't be an exception. And for someone like her-- who mainly does alternative pop, I totally get how stunning it would be to sing with an entire orchestra! Good stuff!
Her genuinely authentic and spirited personality is infectious and leaves me smiling even if I couldn’t hear the song. I love this purely vulnerable and fiercely independent woman. Keep being you even when it’s not what others may do.
Why does this make me cry every time? Because of the beautiful performance? Or from how far our great nation is from the American dreams, no longer a reality.
I don't how many time I have cried listening to this beautiful song and Regina's voice. I have no idea the story behind the song, but I feel it personal... like I should apologize to my dad for being hard with him cause he is doing the best he can. No one is perfect.
Amesthys The story is of Aaron Burr talking to Theodosia jr, his daughter, when she was just a baby. Aaron’s father died when he was young, as well as his mother. It’s a beautiful song that represents the love a parent has for their child really well. 💕
REGINA IS SO HAPPY AND EXITED, IT'S SO CUTE AND PURE. Aaaah, my feelings can't handle it....
Ahhhhhhh me toooooo
Regina is a bottle of sunshine in human form.
Agree. I just love her voice
Regina's happiness? I live for that.
She looks genuinely so happy after singing 😢
In my opinion, this was the best "casting" decision on the Hamilton mixtape. And this performance is somehow a LOT better than the album version. Chills and tears. Thanks, Kennedy Center.

i agree! :)
That + Sia in Satisfied is the greatest!
Regina Spektor + Ben Folds + strings = ACTUAL TEARS. What beautiful fucking music. Thank you for uploading, Kennedy Center!
Regina is so underrated. This talented woman is precious and deserves all the fame but in the same time I don't want her to be popular and mainstream..
Same!!! I love her music and yet I'm happy not many know her 💛
HAHAHAHAHAH, I feel exactly the same!!!
I'm not the only one, lol

Too late. She is already popular and (in a certain way) mainstream
Ben Folds is so dorkaliscious! I just love him. Spektor is infectious. I do hope parents are singing this lullaby anthem to their infants.
I know I am... now if only I could stop crying.
dorkalicious is funny word
Yes we are 🤱🏼
We're currently expecting a child in December and are singing this to them.
@@BelleVanSchijndel Congrats! What joy! Keep singing to them.
Ben Folds and Regina Spektor singing Hamilton with a beautiful orchestra... I’ve truly seen the most beautiful thing in my life.
i kind of want regina to write a musical! she's such a master of telling engrossing little stories in her songs - it'd be interesting to see her take on the challenge of a full theatrical piece.
I know this is an old comment, but I've often thought that too!
Have thought this too!
Regina Spektor's voice is so delicate and emotive with enough warmth that it really feels like a lullaby.
I will never ever get tired of Regina. She's got the magic.
If anyone needs me, I'll be in a corner crying while playing this on repeat.
This song is truly heartwarming I could listen to it over and over again great job you too👌👍
Lol same. Can I join you in the corner? I brought pillows.
Hugs!)
2 years later and I’ve just discovered this video. Now I’m crying 😢
and I'm still here, 2 years later.
I love that she covered this song. Makes you think of it as a mother singing instead of a father. Very profound in a different way.
I’m just gunna pretend that a tiny sunbeam of joy didn’t poke through my cold, cold heart.
She's so adorable! I'm so glad she got to sing a song from Hamilton! She nailed it!
Hamilton? Regina? Are you trying to kill me?!
This comment makes me so happy
If I have to go. this is the best way I can think of.
LMFAO this comment though
😂🤣😂🤣😂 Amen...
So I assume by the time you wrote this comment you hadn't seen... REGINA + LIN!
I came as soon as I heard.
I've never been able to sing this song with out my voice cracking at some point. What a fantastic rendition.
I CRY AND LAUGHED AT THE SAME TIME
EXACTLY
One of the most beautiful collaborations ever existed.
Her emotions from 2:25 are priceless ❤️
Ikr
srsly. I love her so much.
This is what an artist looks like when they are just consumed and lost in their craft and giving themselves over to it entirely. Beautiful.
That voice is just so beautiful.

Dear Theodosia, what to say to you?
You have my eyes
You have your mother’s name
When you came into the world, you cried and it broke my heart
I’m dedicating every day to you
Domestic life was never quite my style
When you smile, you knock me out, I fall apart
And I thought I was so smart
You will come of age with our young nation
We’ll bleed and fight for you, we’ll make it right for you
If we lay a strong enough foundation
We’ll pass it on to you, we’ll give the world to you
And you’ll blow us all away
Someday, someday
Yeah, you’ll blow us all away
Someday, someday
Oh Philip, when you smile I am undone
My son
Look at my son
Pride is not the word I’m looking for
There is so much more inside me now
Oh Philip, you outshine the morning sun
My son
When you smile, I fall apart
And I thought I was so smart
My father wasn’t around (my father wasn’t around)
I swear that
I’ll be around for you
I’ll do whatever it takes
I’ll make a million mistakes
I’ll make the world safe and sound for you
Will come of age with our young nation
We’ll bleed and fight for you, we’ll make it right for you
If we lay a strong enough foundation
We’ll pass it on to you, we’ll give the world to you
And you’ll blow us all away
Someday, someday
Yeah, you’ll blow us all away
Someday, someday
the part with philip wasn't in there though, btw
Just when I thought I couldn't love her anymore than I already do
REGINA’S FACE AT THE END! 😍😍😍 This video is priceless in every aspect!
They way they sing with such soft voices. It's just perfection. Like a gentle kiss on the head and a warm hug embracing me.
Regina and Sara...pure performers, authentic, straight from their heart..what an amazing energy they bring into...we as listeners can feel it...❤❤
I wasn't emotionally prepared for this 😩😭
At this moment I only have one wish, and it's to see Regina Spektor live.
Right! I did go see her in Boston and it was one of the best concerts ever.
same😭❤️
Ah music may save us yet. The keeper of truth where eyes deceive voice will reveal.

Wow! There's a song in Spanish called Anabelle, by Juan Perro and you should definitely check it out, it's based in that poem!
That poem is absolutely beautiful, thank you for sharing that.
aww
My heart melts when she smiles at the orchestra at the end

Lin Manuel Miranda was meant to write this but Regina was meant to sing this song.
Now I'm in love. Regina is such a joy.
She has that soothing voice that could put me into sleep every time I listen to her
MY TEARS CANT BE STOPPED
I could listen to this on repeat for HOURS!
Wow, fantastic... I'm in love w/ Spektor... I'm soo easy.

Just love her singing and how she responded at the very end with her clapping..music was so gooooooood!!
Hey look, my favorite composer and my favorite hamilton song. Great.
This is magical!!
I just found this video and can I just say, how wonderful this performance is. Wow.
Que hermoso es ver a Regina Spektor cantando una canción de Hamilton! a esto se le llama felicidad!
