I loved this three part tutorial. I've been thinking about making one of these aprons for months and knew it would be easy. Following your directions has helped answer all questions I would have had. Thank you!!!
A really thorough tutorial. Thank you. I’m going to have a go at this but my fabric pieces are a bit too small so I’m going to do contrasting pockets and a wide trim along the bottom that matches the pockets.
I made a similar apron to wear when gardening. You have to make it to fit your height & width. Very cute when fit properly. But when you bend over, it falls open! It's fine as long as you won't be bending forward.
This is a great project for sewing practice ;-) The blue (and the brown) is a medium weight 100% linen which I purchased online from fabrics-store.com (Insignia Blue). However, I have made this apron in a heavier linen, and that worked well, and a printed quilting cotton from Joann's. The cotton didn't have the weight I like, it felt a bit flimsy for an apron but I did use it until I made the linen aprons. Getting the right fabric for the project is important for the look of the finished project. Unfortunately, it's something learned by trial and error for most of us.
It isn't easy to take measurements on yourself. The best way to get an accurate measurement is with the help of someone else. But if you don't have or want that option, a camera on a phone is really great. (You could also try to set up two mirrors so you can see your back and front but you have to have good eyesight to read the tape measure). Just set the camera on your phone to delay and take a picture of your back when you have the tape measure in place (about to explain that). Then pinch the photo to enlarge it in order to read the tape measure. Here's how to measure for straps no matter what size: Place the start of the tape measure above your bust at the height you want the top of your apron to be. Hold it with one hand. Take the free end of the tape measure and place it across the upper chest and over the opposite shoulder. Even though the straps on the finished apron will cross in the back it is hard (impossible?) to place the tape measure in that finished spot by yourself. crossing over the front will add in the length you'll need for the strap to cross over. Take a picture or have someone else take a picture of your back where the strap hangs. Looking at the photo, enlarged you will see how far down you want the top of your apron back to be. Where is that ideal top edge on the tape measure? at 20"? at 16"? that's your strap length with OUT seam allowance. Add the seam allowance to that length before cutting out. It's not an exact fitting garment so this method works. When you need exact measurements a buddy, or even a paid seamstress or tailor, is the best way to get them. Hope this helps.
Great tutorial. However, I ended up with large gaps under my arms. Like it’s too big. I’m not sure how to get it to overlap in the back so there’s less underarm gap. I’d like to send you a pic but not sure how. I did it with some lightweight jean fabric before trying it with expensive linen. 😊
Yes. I put it in the washer and dryer before I cut it out. Since this apron will be going through the wash when it’s in use it’s especially important to prewash it. Just iron it flat before you cut ;-) if you use linen a spray bottle of water can really help to iron the wrinkles out.

I'm so pleased you found it helpful. Thank you for watching.
Just what I’ve been looking for! Thank you!
Glad you found it!
I’ve wanted one of these aprons in linen so bad, but they are so expensive online. Thank you for such a great tutorial I can finally make one!
Exactly why I wanted to share how to make your own.

That's a perfect solution to not enough fabric.
The best video!🙏🏻❤️🙏🏻

So excited I found this!
I'm pretty new to sewing - what type of fabric is this lovely blue material? I never really know what to get fabric-eise

@@TheDailySew Good to know, thanks!!
Can you tell how to measure for straps for a larger person please?

Thank you for the timely and detailed info. This was really helpful.

It might be the strap placement but you can send a photo to mary@thedailysew.com and I will see exactly what you mean.
Did you preshrunk your fabric?

Going to make it but look like a dress in front
ha, yes, it does but be sure to wear something under it if you do ;-)
